Phone unlocked (AT&T give code) but APN not editable? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I have unlocked my AT&T Galaxy Note by requesting the SIM unlock code from AT&T. I then put in a non-AT&T card (T-Mobile), rebooted the phone and was asked for the network unlock code. I entered the code and it was successful. The T-Mobile SIM card works.
I then went to the APN settings to edit the APN and there was only one, the original one from AT&T (shown as ATT PTA). Strangely, this APN CANNOT be edited OR DELETED. Even when I create a new one and select that new APN, the phone always revert back to the original APN.
My understanding is that once the phone is unlocked, the original APN can be edited OR deleted and I can use another APN (T-mobile, etc.). Can somebody help?
Thanks!

Unlocking the phone does not unlock software areas that att has locked down. Good news is that you can add your own apn in that screen.
On the APN setting screen, press the menu button, then "new apn". Type all of your settings, then hit menu and save. Now you can select your new apn on the APN screen.
You don't have to worry about the pta apn from att. If it's not selected, it's not doing anything.

Thanks for the explanation! As long as I can use the phone in NON-AT&T network, I am happy.

To eliminate that APN you will have to flash a custom rom. You can be stock and custom.

Up until about a month ago that was correct, but t-mobile is migrating to the same bands as at&t so test the connection first.
Just using the stock LF6 modem and the t-mobile APN and live with that for a day or two to see if you are in an area that has been migrated.
If you never see H+ or 4G icons you will have to flash the Blaze modem.

Just a quick update:
The original APN cannot be edited, so I created a new APN and select that. When I press the "back" button and go back to the list of APN, the phone AUTOMATICALLY selected the original APN, not mine.
I selected that again, press back button and waited for 5 minutes (in case the phone trying to update whatever it needs with the new APN). Went back to the list of APN and the original APN was selected again! (???).

Did you save the APN you created?

I did, that's why I was able to select the radio button from the list. So the list shows 2 APN, BUT as soon as I exit, the default APN was reselected.

In this case, a custom rom is needed for APN changes to stick.
I suggest you look in the super thread (top of the general section)
In the stock roms category you'll see a stock (rooted) version of the rom you need.
You can flash this build which allows APN editing and deletion.
Visually the rom is identical to stock, but sets the system permissions via root access to allow those changes.
Once the modification is complete, you can simply reset your counter and unroot to keep a stock device condition.
The beauty of this device is it's simplicity in root/unroot technique...g
Ranger gets the credit for the rom change advice.....I'm just mentioning it again ...g

Thanks for the information all, really helpful!
I flashed a custom ROM just for testing (CWR backup of course) and indeed I was able to change the APN and it sticks! Definitely have to do with my original stock ICS, even though I rooted it.

You can be mostly stock - - that's what I prefer. But our generous developers take the stock rom and tweak it so we can enjoy modifying our phones and be mostly stock. I'm using the Novena rom.

Yea. They're the same device. This forum is shared between all of the sgh-i717* models.
Using the device on a different carrier than rogers would require a change in the APN settings and possibly a modem flash (I don't really think this is necessary...but if you find no other reference....you can find multiple modems in the dev. Section).
APN settings for ATT are as follows:
Create a new APN with the following settings:
Name: ATT PTA
APN: pta
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Auth: none
APN type: default,mms,supl,hipri
And that's it. Copy and paste the APN type into the corresponding space.
awesome thanks
ya another thing i cant figure out is if i really have the i717 or i717r only because under battery sticker says i717
but under abou phone it shows i717r ??
I got it rooted unlocked and in saurom project rom which i dont care for.
How ir whats best sure way for me to tell?!
also if i want stock rom is theyre a cwm flashable zip or am i stuck with only using odin to get back off this saurom?
Those are the two most important questions i have !
If its the i717r can i odin the i717 tar file or does it have to be rogers tar file

On your screen uptop, next to your hear piece if it say att, then it i717. If it say Samsung and bottom has 4 touch keys. Then it's Canadian gnote. It can be either roger, bell, or tellas. Hope at least it will lead to the right direction

+1 to that. There are only 2 different Galaxy Notes, the I7000 (International), and the I717 (AT&T / Bell / Tellus / Rogers)
You can not flash I7000 Roms on the I717, not the reverse of that. But you can flash any I717 Rom from any carrier back and fourth on any I717.

i717 assertions failing because of i717r
So, I have a sgh-i717, but a year ago I flashed to the Saurom ROM, and it changed the device name to be sgh-i717r. Saurom has served me well, but was getting a little long in the tooth, so I started looking into getting something new(4.2). all ROMs for 4.2 that I have tried (5+) fail because "sgh-i717r" is not equal to "sgh-i717".
I updated to the Electron_stock 4.0 ROM, hoping that would resolve the issue, but it doesn't. I've poked around all over the forums to try to find instructions on how to manually update the device name, and not turned anything up. This thread was the closest. Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry you're having trouble. Have you tried using odin and reverting back to stock software?
And Samsung kies is what's used for firmware updates. You can also try that way.
Just go to /system with any root explorer program... open the build.prop in a text editor and edit the device I.d. line within.
Save and exit then you're done.
Hmmm... the assertion is looking at ro.product.device, and my build.prop is set to SGH-I717, which is what the assertion is looking for, but the assertion fails. Note that when I plug the phone into my laptop, windows recognizes it as a SGH-I717R. Any other location where this could be set?

thought I would be clever and try doing a
find . -exec grep -i -H i717r '{}' \;
In /system, it turns up i717r in several .so and .ko files.
In /sys, it doesn't turn up anything before it causes the phone to reboot
Any other locations I should consider looking?
For posterity, I thought I would log my efforts here...I noticed after reading more posts, that many people were using twrp (team win recovery project) instead of clockwork. So, I downloaded the app from google play, and then was able to successfully install 4.2.2 ROMs. None of the 4.2.2 ROMs would boot, though, so either the assertions should have been respected, or going from 2.3.2 to 4.2.2 was a bad upgrade path. 4.2.2 boot animations would run for several minutes, the flash a screen about NFC services, then go back to boot animations). At that point, I needed to get my phone in working order again, so I didn't do any research about the NFC problem. TWRP can't restore nandroid backups, so I flashed back to clockwork recovery so that I could restore a 4.0.1 stock ROM that I had tried successfully a couple of days ago.
I may try installing GooManager( what twrp is called in the play store) and going for 4.2.2 again, now that I have stock 4.0.1 installed.
FWIW, after all this, the device is still recognized as a SGH-I717R when plugged into my laptop
Sounds like saurom flashed some csc files
I'd use Odin to go to complete stock.
Goomanager is not twrp.
Goo.im is a host for devs to upload things to.
Team win uploads twrp to there.
They are separate, you'll notice there are more than just recoveries in there, there's Roms abs kernels
Also you can install twrp right now on the Rom you're on and make a twrp backup, then you'll be able to restore that with twrp and boy gaff to go to cwm.
Got 4.2.2 ROMs to work... unfortunately, I changed three things at once, so I'm not certain what resolved my problem. The likely candidate is that I didn't clear cache. The other things I forgot was to flash the 4.2.2 ROMs with the GAPPS before rebooting, and of course this time around I was moving from stock 4.0.4. Other theories/corrections are welcome

[Q] Lost automatic connection with my data plan

Hi everybody!
Yesterday, I applied a custom rom to my Galaxy Note and after a successful installation, my data plan wasn't working like it used to be.
I have to say this isn't the first time I have done this, and in the previous opportunities after flashing the rom and rebooting, the EDGE/3G icon appeared by itself detecting my data plan. I never had to configure the APN settings (like it is said in many posts I have seen here).
So, when I realize that it wasn't working properly, I re-flashed the rom but didn't worked. So then, I downloaded the ICS stock rom and flashed it through Odin, hoping it would reset all things here and would give me the initial configuration, but that didn't work either.
I have entered through settings and deactivated/activated the options related to mobile data, but that icon never appears or my data connection showed up.
Forgot to mention that this phone was unlocked through cellunlocker by code, and that I can make phone calls with no problem and also the Wifi works fine... And thank you in advance for any advice/help that you could make
If it's happening with different ROMs then take a look at your modem (baseband). Are you using I717UCLF6? Go to System Settings-About Phone-Baseband Version.
Like ^^^^ said, and you didn't say it, but I'm guessing T-Mobile. So flash any ROM you like, reboot and let but settle in, then flash the Blaze 4G or whatever T-Mobile modem works best for you.

Note 3 settings missing menus?

hiya guys,
I've been having a lot of problems the past couple days..
I ordered my note 3 straight from Sprint. When I got it, I flashed custom recovery and flashed Freezas stockish ROM. The phone came loaded with NAB so I installed the
NAB version of the ROM, well there was some missing menus in settings, like tethering and such.. So I flashed stock nc5 and flashed his engineering boot loader. Ugraded my firmware to nc5. Flashed the nc5 version of the ROM and still the same settings.. No WiFi calling in settings, no tethering options at all.. I got curious and decided to flash KitKatkiller to see if it had the same problems, it was the same thing in the settings in kitkatkiller except it showed the ROM manager and stuff that was added into the ROM. But was missing tethering.. I hit WiFi hotspot in the toggle like I did on freezas ROM and it said hotspot not supported..
But josh's ROM is deodexed with that mod included.
What is going on?
Try this

Hi guys I know your problem.
Csc stuff needs stock recovery to be proberly applied in my experience. I can factory reset phone to different csc (XAS for example) and have sprint hotspot and usb tethering options removed from menu.
Set csc to SPR and power off phone. Power back on to stock recovery and you should see something along the lines of "applying csc SPR"
If menus have not been added at this point factory reset may be in order with correct csc applied.
Once you have these menus added in THEN odin the custom recovery you want.
Good luck!

I used galaxytool.apk it shows XAS
Actually it(SM-N900P) is flashed to Reliance CDMA here in india to use it with RCDMA RUIM
Device is Stock, as it can be seen in status.
Someone told me that it is not activated on Sprint so no boot logo of sprint & no tethering & Hotspot option without activation on sprint,
My device's rom is NC5 Stock Rooted
I m new to all this, so pls suggest me step by step guide to get hotspot option.

If your phone is flashed to another carrier and you didn't do it yourself you probably just want to leave it how it is.
XAS wont display sprint boot and power down animations. The phone comes with 4 different ones. sprint, samsung, boost, and virgin that can all be set. XAS gives you the samsung one.(like debranded phone)
But yea unless you know the process to setup the phone for reliance or have someone who can do it again for you I would advise to leave it alone.
But if you are brave take an nv backup in dfs or qpst's software download (even better would be to dd these partitions [mmcblk0p12 13 &18]) and only then take the steps I mentioned previously with the stock recovery. Alternately get a nandroid from someone on the same software version. You will probably want to have sprintdm.apk removed to be safe. Either way take nv backup before moving forward especially if you don't know how to flash a phone to reliance.
**edit**
Go into apn's and write down your settings for them. and BE ADVISED the "enable hotspot" in my app is for phones on Sprint only!
Once you get the menu items added we (should hopefully) be able to enable them.

Odin stock tar for the exact software version you are on now and then reboot to recovery. If mps_code is set to SPR before odin'ing the tar you will get these menus added.

Flashed CM13 now no data

So got my phone rooted and ready to accept a custom ROM. Now what ever ROM I flash I get no cellular data. Only when I am on WIFI do I get data. On my status bar it shows my LTE connection to T-Mobile with a ! in it. Am I supposed to flash or do something else when flashing a ROM? I used the latest version of TWRP 3.0.2-0
OK if I revert back to the stock Oxygen OS 2.2.1 ROM it now works fine. What would cause flashing a custom ROM not to have signal?
No data means ur using the wrong cm13 version(i have no data problems on ashwins build.) or maybe your apns just arent configured. Google for your provisers apn configs and set them manually. Also validate that you can see your IMEI on the phone.

AW OK got what you mean Downloaded Beanstalk CM13 still same problem. Flashes fine then I have no data no signal at all from T-Mobile. Only the stock Oxygen OS ROM works.
Just gave up. Went back to Stock recovery and stock ROM and locked my boot loader. Everything now works as intended. Not sure why all 10 ROM's I tried would flash and load fine but I would have no cell signal strange....
If you need to manually set APN settings go to Settings > SIM cards > SIM 1 settings > APN config.
There click on one APN-setting in the list to open it. Change everything you need, including the name (example: name: Hollandsnieuwe, APN: live.vodafone.com, username: vodafone, password: vodafone, MCC: 204, MNC: 04, APN-type: default, APN-protocol: IPv4, Roaming protocol for APN: IPv4, the rest is blank) then click: Menu > Save. Then go back to the APN list and click the dot right to the entry you just created. Then restart your phone and you should have the new settings active.
By the way: In OOS 2.2.1 you don't have these settings but they are probably already righteous.
I have this problem too but I saw a fix somewhere and cannot find it
Yeah I got it to work finally. It was the APN setting thing. But what is odd is, if I use the T-Mobile APN settings it will not work. If I use MetroPcs (Which T-Mobile owns) then it will work fine. So go figure....

APN is fine. I also have the same APN in other ROMs. I'm also on Telekom.mk (ex T-Mobile Macedonia)
Tmob no.. Roaming +
If I'm on any rom other than OOS I can use data when roaming (99.9% AT&T tower) but have issues with data on T-mobile. However OOS = no roaming data, but no t-mobile data problems. CM 13 and MM roms are useless for a daily driver. I can't recall which MM rom I tried recently but I could not get it to register on t-mobile LTE network even in areas where Tmob was the leading network.
I am getting pretty tired of onyx... I have other network issues with the recent update.

Never ever re-lock your bootloader, it could bug it out so that you can not unlock it again and/or strange things can happen.
Be glad if you are not affected, but if you unlock it again, keep it that way since it's of no disadvantages to have it unlocked.

Data issues after flashing Custom Rom

Hey there, I have the V30 US998 model (bought from US Cellular, my service provider as well) and I'm having issues with my service after flashing.
Stock root works perfectly fine, but when I try to flash any Oreo or Pie room I either get with with perfect SMS and MMS (only works after making a call) with both 4g and 3g running about .3 Mb.....or I don't get any of it working at all.
Is there something I'm missing? Maybe flashing a kernel? I would appreciate all help and advice!
maybe after flashing try adding the corresponding apn for your carrier and see if that helps out with your mms and sms issue. also make a back up of the stock rom with root if swapping roms. it'll be faster than restarting from scratch after a flash.
Make sure your APN is set correctly. This is what's recommended by US Cellular for the V30:
Name: USSC
APN: internet
Proxy: wap.voicestream.com
Port: wap.voicestream.com
Username: [email protected]
password: yourMSID
MCC: 310
MNC: 120
Authentication Type: not set
If "APN type" pops up: default, supl
Not sure why they suggest putting a domain in the port field as I've never had a carrier that used anything there... it's always been "not set" for me. It doesn't make sense logically by basic understanding of the internet but maybe it's something weird and specific to phones and carriers.
Not sure exactly what MSID is but apparently if you call 611 US Cellular can give you it.
Normally nothing "pops up" but that's what their site claims. Usually "APN type" is where you set "default, supl".
To save those APN settings you click the three dots at the top right then select save.
Ultimately, you could nandroid your flashed phone and put your stock US Cellullar ROM back on, record the APN data and flash the nandroid back onto the phone then restore the default APN settings but first I suggest you try to just enter the APN based on the information from the US Cellular site and the below step.
Another thing that could be going on, assuming the APN is set correctly is to enter the following hidden menu with the dialer: *#*#4636#*#* and go select the appropriate preferred network type. For me on ATT I went with "LTE/UMTS auto (PRL)". I think this should work for you as well. This resolved data issues in the past on my Nexus 5 and I had the same problem on the V30+ after flashing a ROM which it also resolved.

I tried to save the APN settings but it failed due to an error? I think it had something to do with either port or the apn type. So I am curious, would grabbing us99820e_02_0910.kdz for US998 (US Cellular) and using LGUP help in this instance? Would all I have to do is reunlock the bootloader and root?

You don't have to re-unlock bootloader. It will stay unlocked unless you re-lock it; please don't. Because to re-unlock you have to temporarily downgrade to pre-July 2018 firmware.
Why US998 20E? Why not the most recent? 20E is older. 20F is most recent You can even flash via TWRP. Just reflash Magisk before rebooting.
You can also enable DTS 3D stereo on US998 20F:

At least try it out before you flash back to custom ROM...

I stated before, even flashing back to stock was still giving me issues. I really haven't had much sleep recently due to this issue, so please have patience. I ended up plugging my V30 into my laptop for LG Bridge and it automatically updated to us998 20F. I am hoping its what I needed.

I only saw where you said stock rooted works fine:

Stock root works perfectly fine, but when I try to flash any Oreo or Pie room I either get with with perfect SMS and MMS (only works after making a call) with both 4g and 3g running about .3 Mb.....or I don't get any of it working at all.

For custom ROMs, you do often have to edit or even create APNs for specific carriers.
Hope stock 20F solves your problem.

Yeah, when I got back home and flashed back to stock, I was only having issues with 4G and it's speed. Just went up to F and I'm still running into them. I also can't edit the apn settings I actually need to change.

Try "add APN", then make it the default.

Also for US CELLULAR, you want LTE/CDMA, right? I of course have where I need for AT&T. Don't use what I have, I'm just showing the options.

I believe US Cellular is one of the last to use CDMA, but I made the apn default but still everything but the first two are still grayed out.
Download 20f zip to sd card in your phone. Go into twrp and go to wipe. Swipe factory reset then go to advanced wipe and wipe the things i have in sceenshot. Then format data. Flash zip. Wipe cache. Reboot system. Make sure you backup anything important because if it is on phone storage it will be gone. You can flash magisk later if your phone works after that. I am on us cellular also.
Before I saw this post I was having problems with cell data, after leaving wifi data will not kick in, I had to go to setting and enable 3g only then LTE and after that, I got data connection, what I did I just dirty flash 20f (I didn't want to lose my info), and everything has been working fine.
PS
I never had a custom rom, it was just converted from sprint to US998, and worked fine for a while and then suddenly started having the data problem

Question, have you gotten any of the Oreo or Pie roms to work nicely with your phone and service? Curious cause now I've fully fixed my phone's service And junk, kinda getting antsy to try out one of them.
Liquidremix worked good but you have to make a call after reboot to get calling and data to work. Right now i prefer stock rooted
After waiting a bit I haven't found any ROMS supporting US Cellular off the bat.
I'm on the latest update US99820G and still having no luck. Anyone else find a fix found a similar post!
I don't have a US Cellular phone (I have the vs996 (Verizon) Frankensteined to US998 - - currently on 20g). For me to install any custom AOSP rom, I have to first do a clean wipe and install the twrp flashable US998 - - 20e rom. I then do a clean wipe and install the AOSP custom Rom of choice (resurrection remix, Liquid Remix, etc.).
If I don't do it this way, then I have problems with data, sound, texts, etc. Again, I don't know if this applies to the US cellular phone or not.
I still have to make a phone call (I call my voice mail) after reboots to get things working.
