[Q] Site of privacy friendly apps? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I just installed yet another app that just about wanted my life story (listed every permission that pdroid2.0 has access to). It made me wonder, are there some android app sites that have just (relatively) privacy friendly apps? Asides from the virus scanning etc just a bunch of apps that don't ask for a myriad of unneeded information. I do feel a twinge of guilt for (blocking) those apps who are devs livelihoods as opposed to hobbies so I was thinking that maybe there is a site that has apps from those kind of devs. Anyway, if such sites exist links to them would really be appreciated!
Cheers,

Researcher Says That 8% of Android Apps Are Leaking Private Information

http://digitizor.com/2011/07/21/android-malware/
Android has had its fair share of malware problems. Whenever malware are detected, Google reacts swiftly and remove them. However, according to security researcher Neil Daswani, around 8% of the apps on the Android market are leaking private user data.
Neil Daswani, who is also the CTO of security firm Dasient, says that they have studied around 10,000 Android apps and have found that 800 of them are leaking private information of the user to an unauthorized server. Neil Daswani is scheduled to present the full findings at the Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas which starts on July 30th.
The Dasient researchers also found out that 11 of the apps they have examined are sending unwanted SMS messages.
Google needs to take charge
This malware problem on Android has become too much. One of the main reason that we see malicious apps in the market is because of the lack of regulation in the apps that get into the Android Market.
Sure, the lack of regulation can be good. It means that developers can make their apps without worrying if Google will accept their apps or not. It fits into the pre-existing application distribution model where anyone can develop and publish their own apps.
However, this comes at a price - the malware problem. Yes, most of the problems with these malicious apps can be avoided if only users read the permission requirements of the apps. But, what percentage of the users actually read the permission requirements of all the apps they download?
I think that it is time that Google make approval of the apps a requirement before it gets into the Market. They do not need to do it like Apple, but a basic security check before an app gets on the market will be nice.
If nothing is done about and this problem is allowed to grow, it will end up killing the platform.

Get an iPhone then.
Don't know if apple should approve or disaproove since that can slow down the release of new apps, but they need to check, that's for sure.
Yeah, just read permissions when installing applications. A lot of them will state access to personal data (such as contacts, browser history, etc.)
Such apps like MP3 downloaders contain ALOT of this malware.
if you're that paranoid.....LBE Privacy Guard + Droidwall = #winning
This article is very true in sense of lacking of control on big G part. My friend developed an app and he was able to get it into market almost instantly. I was very shocked to find that no scanning or checking was done.
Therefore, it's a risk that we take everyday to use these apps, specially, custom ROMs because who knows what it installed really. Users just need to be aware of their action, and don't use bank apps on rooted devices, or corporate email on rooted devices, or email yourself passwords to your online banking from your rooted devices. My thought is that, if it's out there then somebody can get it these days with all the technologies.
A little bit of common sense when installing apps can go a long way. You stifle the market too much when you cater to the lowest common denominator but then if you don't you get stuff like this.
+1 on Droidwall too, great app. Just don't turn it on and then forget about it before getting it set up properly, it's a pain figuring out why you can't use the internet on anything lol

hahaha, was tryna to download a new app and wondering why it just stalled kept on saying, downloading..... downloading paused....blah blah!!! lol
turns out it was droidwall (even with market enabled) lol
Yea when a simple clock widget wants to read your contact, data and location but has no ads or settings, I avoided that one.
I prefer the risk of an open system to the purgatory that is a closed system ruled by a draconian company any day.
Oh look iOS does this too.

Why is there malware in Android?

Hello everyone.
I've just came up with this thought and I wanted to share it with you. We always hear about how Android is more prone to malware than, say, iOS.
But I'd like to know why. I'm pretty sure that, before releasing an app on the Market (oops, Play Store!), Google makes a thorough validation of it. I find it difficult to believe that Google's guidelines are less stringent than Apple's.
Why, then, or better, whence the malware?
The best answer I could give myself is that malevolent apps are modified versions of pirated software that people download from the Internet. Like, a guy downloads the pirated version of Plant versus Zombies thinking that it's going to be the exact replica of the original (paid) version, but inside the downloaded app there's actually a malevolent piece of code that, then, ends on the webzines.
Hence, two questions for you guys:
Where's the Android malware coming from?
How can Google stop it?
Thank you a lot for your attention, I hope the answers will be numerous!

Well, I've never seen malware that was made from an actual app. They are usually small separate apps with familiar icon or name and (sometimes) tons of temp files so that Asphalt7.apk won't be the size of 123 kb.
I'm not sure that Google checks anything before people report about it. There are numerous hello world apps there
Because androids source code can be seen by anyone it makes android an easier target than ios who keep their code a secret.
Google run a general check, they call their software "bouncer", but if the apps don't do anything suspicious until on an actual device it can miss the malware.
How could they stop all malware? They can't, even the very closed ios cannot stop all malware, but the user has ultimate control because we can see exactly what apps can access before installing them and so it makes it easier to spot suspect apps.

AndriodOAP Project

Hi all
This is my thread for an ongoing project im working on called AndroidOAP
OAP is not Owesome Android Project, lol
This is Andriod Old Age Pensioner!
But WAIT!! This may have many applications to other areas in the caring community!
Background
My mum is 75 and has early stage altzimers. I have noticed a lapes of memory, eyesight and hearing. I have also just got her a 10" rk3066 4.1 tab for xmas.
The aim of this is to help her keep in touch with family and friends (social networking), keep up to date on the weather/news (she loves it), keep her mind active (games).
Aim of Project
This project has a few aims, guided by anyone who wants to contribute. some of which are :
BASIC
- Creating a simple UI that is easy for pensioners/handicapped people to use
- Identifying simple to use apps that perform complex tasks
- Utilise the accessibility capabilities of android specifically for the users needs
- Monitor the device remotely
- Monitor the users interactions and provide alerts (IE medication, doctors apointments, etc)
EXTRA
- Create a working rom that can be installed on devices that can be given to the target audience (OAPs, disables, etc)
- Obtain ongoing support for this project
This will probably not interest most of you but anyone willing to contribute to this nobell cause will be very appreciated
Please get in touch with any ideas
Thanks for your time

If I read this correctly, you want to develop an OS based on Android, but one that is extremely simple to use? All I know is that this would be an extremely time consuming project, probably half a year at the least, because you'd have to remove tons of drawables (images and stuff that is rendered) and code, and add in many more. It would be much easier to just install a launcher with big icons, change the system font size to the largest possible, perhaps use some accessibility settings, and debloat the tablet to the max.
Has your mother ever used electronic gadgets before? I forget the saying, but it's something like you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Considering that these types of electronics didn't exist during older peoples' generations, it'll be significantly harder to get them accustomed to such things. I don't know if I'm stereotyping or not, but it may be increasingly difficult to teach her how to use Android because she has Alzheimers. I'm not saying it's not worth a try though. As long as she doesn't feel overwhelmed or frustrated, I'd say to definitely try it out for a while and see how it goes. Happy holidays and have a happy new year. I hope your gift does good for you all.

Thanks for the input dude, but, I think your over complicating things. A custom rom doesnt mean rebuilding it from the ground up! The aim is to find the most user friendly apps and the best settings and then create a rom around that. no need for new icons, etc.
Just to let you know, even though my mum is 75 she has been a nurse all her life so is well versed on using computers (hell, she brought me up and im a developer, lol). Touching icons on a screen will be no problem for her, altzimers or not. To be fair, you are stereotyping and its pretty sad
Regardless of the support I will continue with this as its a personal project that I will persue. I was just after any help I could get, not negativity.
Have a nice day

Hi @Cass1977, I see your project as a great initiative to encourage older people to use technology. Although this project might be huge (and I don't have the tablet to test), I might be able to just provide suggestions for your project.
In the Basic section:
Simple UI: It should be easy, due to the fact that many launchers today are user-friendly and easy to use.
Simple to use apps that perform complex stuff: do give some examples.
accessibility capabilities: I don't know of much apps for that (there could be some in the play store) but once we attract the attention of some developers, we can start rolling.
Monitor the device remotely: what do u mean exactly?
Isn't monitor the user's interaction same as the point above? Correct me if I'm wrong.
More suggestions:
Create some tutorials for some complicated apps.
Better colour profile.
Less bright screen=less strain to the eye in low light conditions.
Bigger font=less strain to the eye.
More suggestions will come as I think of them.
Smack that thanks button if I helped!

P.S. replies with quotes will be replied to faster.

Good advice, but I feel too many launchers have too many options. the main thing the user needs is simple to access apps. Maybe large icons, etc.My mum likes her news and weather too so simple widgets may help with things like that (A lot are provided with the apps).
TTS will be required too (Text to speech). Maybe an app that will speak highlighted words? Probably have to be built?

By the way, By 'Monitor the device remotly' I mean basically the same thing I have with my kids tabs. Screen Time (MASSIVE RESPECT TO THIS APP!!!) It monitors what my kids do on their tab and allows me to lock it at certain times and give them chores to earn rewards. NOT the same thing we need here, but, thats the kind of monitoring im thinking. Monitoring medication (pop up reminder and if its not used a remote notification)
Any more ideas you have then let me know, Many thanks for your input

I can help test launchers according to what u want and report back. Widgets are easy. (Most news apps has widgets.) There may be some apps for TTS designed for this but it's rare (if not none). (TTS apps are extremely complicated) yea, we might need to build it. (Build from Google voice search, possibility)
OK... I'll have to search it up on Google. (We may have to build from another app...) we can build from Screen Time (add some features into it, we could ask Screen Time's developer for help!)
P.S. I think editing a system file can increase the maximum volume of the sound...

[Q] A site/way to to advance search for android apps?

Perhaps its just me because I haven't found many posts relating to this but I have had a hard time finding apps in many cases because it seems like many places don't give advance search options anymore? Things like specifying license, ratings, popularity, language availability, last updated when, not to mention search by say permission (ie least invasive though i suspect that is a bit of a pipe-dream) searching by or sorting by these parameters etc etc etc. Amazon, Quixey, and Appbrain and perhaps to a tiny extent alternativeto help but none of them are killer (ironically [to me] I find play almost useless for searching at least, kind of counter productive as it just floods me with tons of stuff and little way to narrow it down that i am aware of). I am just hoping maybe there is some site that scrapes other sites or a way to run regexs on sites or something ? Any constructive thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Um.. Anyone Know How to Make a Privacy Policy With Google's Nee User Data Terms?

Hi guys.. Er, I'm in a bit of a predicament. Let me start off by saying that this is my very, very first time I ever publicly published an Android app before. I already made sure I read Google's Developers Distribution terms and agreements and brought the Google Developers Console. BUT... I found out that I need a privacy policy since my app (screen lock app) does indeed access sensitive data. My app is open sourced.. But the main thing is: How do I make a privacy policy?? I am literally the only person working on the app and so far, things have been a bit rocky since I'm trying to compile with Google's terms WHILE at the same time trying to develop the app (and some parts I'm having a lot of trouble creating). So.. anyone can give out a tip with making a privacy policy?
