Erratic Pen Behaviour - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Is there an app available that I can use to determine whether my screen sensor is borked?
I ask because on both LeeDroid's HC and JB versions, when I hover the pen slightly above the screen, the various apps pick up the pen movement. Even replacing the pen batteries doesn't change the behaviour.
Any ideas?

You have to take apart the stylus, clean the contacts, and put it all back together. There's a very detailed thread with pictures on tabletpcreview.com HP Slate 500's forums

Thanks. I'll go check that out

that's weird.... in my experience, replacing the battery will do the trick

cant find!

Can you mention the link and post? (I cant find that)
I am not sure but my stylus is giving me some blank looks . Sometime works and sometimes doesn't..Not able to find the issue.
Looking for replacing the battery.
Any idea how long this 1 AAA cell works with usual use? I never replaced it till now

Disappointed... pen malfunction?

A best friend and I went to best buy last night just to check out the flyer and see how functional it would be for us- We both being educators and need to present in a easy way.
I got on the Flyer and went to google, searched a math pdf worksheet and pulled it up to see how it would look. It was quite small. Even zooming in, I wasn't sure I would have enough room to annotate or work a problem.
The biggest issue, which is why I put pen malfunction in the title, is that while writing, the pen kept writing even when I lifted from writing letters. I didn't have to even touch the screen to write. The result was my name writtin in print, but without the pen being lifted. Very messy and not functional.
Perhaps this was just a glitch? I looked and looked for settings on calibration or adjustments, i didn't find any.
Was this just a malfunction?
Probably you were using an old firmware and were used to using the iPout pen....!
This is a true digitizing input, still needs development, but better than anything else out there!.....

Yeah, I've seen this happen a few times with my pen. Sometimes it will still write with the pen just barely above the surface. I find that this tends to happen more as the pen battery wears down. If you unscrew the pen back, disconnecting the battery and essentially resetting the pen, it works fine again. Nothing to really worry about. Considering that you looked at a display model, it's very likely the pen battery is getting low.
Also, if you find the text on the screen too small, it may make sense to wait for the 10" Puccini tablet which will sport Scribe technology as well.

Stylus Problems

I've tried 4 different Capacitive Screen styluses on my Tablet S, with no screen protector, and it requires me to push much harder than on any other tablet or screen I've tried it on.
Can anyone test this out on their Tablet S for me?
Is this normal? Or is this just a defect in the one I got? Give it a try and let me know please.
Ive never tried a stylus on any other tablet than the Sony one I own so I didn't know it was just an issue on this one but yes, the performance of the stylus is horrible.
The stylus didn't work very well for me either. The Nook color I have also didn't work very well. Pretty sure the capacitive touchscreens work differently between iOS and android so this may just be a "designed for ipad" kind of issue.
The problem I have is that I used it on the Xoom and ALL the other tablets they had over at Best Buy on display, and they worked flawlessly. Some of then better than it did on the iPads on display :-( damn it SONY, I think it's just a screen sensitivity thing... if anyone figures out how to increase this, let me know.
Why do you need a stylus anyway? If you really do need a stylus, you should have gotten a tablet that supports an active stylus by either Wacom or N-Trig for actual precision, and quality when writing. I know at least the HTC Flyer and one of the Lenovo tablets support this.

Hi,
A friend of mine recommended the Griffin Stylus, although he has an iPad2 he said that after trial and error with several brands, this one was near perfect.
I'm also looking into this, so that I can use the tablet as a notepad for classes - I have the apps installed already, all I have to do now is find the proper stylus.
Dunno if you guys didnt realize that there is a factory installed screen protector over the glass ( yes glass, mineral glass in fact). thats causing sensitivity issues.
If you read the manual it will tell you NOT to use a stylus. The Tablet S is not meant for anything other than your finger tip.

Not according to the link below
http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/st...10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666381663
I searched all the leaflets and booklets that came with the tablet and could not find any evidence supporting your claim, I also went online to the Sony Forums and nothing about Stylus Pen issues - but it's still possible, as stated, that due to design/build characteristics, stylus pens work badly with the tablet.
So far, according even to my friend's experience on the iPad and the information at the Sony Store, I'm still hoping that maybe the Sony Tablet is just picky when it comes to Stylus Pens and we just have to do our homework before buying one.
I hope that's the case, as I'm planning on using this device for classes and so far, software-wise I'm all set, so all I need now is a suitable stylus pen to write with.
I'll let you know how it goes, but please if anyone else has any successful results on this, please share as well.
Hi, Maybe I am "mis-remembering" it. I believe if you click on the Sony Help Icon it will take you to a website with various tips and information. In there it will tell you not to use anything on the screen except for your finger tips. I should confirm this for you but I am tired and lazy. Anyways, I don't see the point in using a stylus with this tablet. To me, this is the kind of tablet you leave beside the couch or your bed. In my opinion it's not a travel / work tablet.

Couldn't disagree more, this tablet keeps surprising me, in a positive way.
Work is always relative, travel is just not so as this seems more and more as THE partner to have, but opinions come and go, of course.
As for facts, check the image below - and hopefully the stylus drama dies here.
Griffin stylus pen, GC16040 - 4.3" length, in an orange box.
I'm still to put the screen protector, will report back as it is done.

I picked up the Griffin stylus GC16040 and it isn't working well with mine with the Sony screen protector on. I still had to give in a good amount of pressure for it to work.
Has anyone tried the stylus sold on the Sony store website?
I'm going to assume it'll work because Sony is selling it, and it says specifically that it is for Sony tablets. I'm going to place an order to try it out.

I got my screen protector from amazon today - not the official sony one, and another set of stylus pens - Groov-e, GV-CP2
Both stylus packs work ok, but with screen protector I do have to apply some little pressure, but I have to say that for me, it's basically the same as when writing with normal pen and paper...
I do notice a slightly more diffuse image due to the protector, and the griffin stylus is alot softer to use than the Groov-e ones.
Both work ok, but the Groov-e just seemed slightly rougher, when typing I get a subtle scraping sound...
I also noticed that not all apps behave the same with this, personally I liked genie writing best, whereas hand writing HD didn't feel so precise in capturing my strokes.
Sample 2 in attach.

Which screen protector did you get exactly?
Drawing in supernote is the same with your finger or stylus, not great. It misses some inputs when drawing. I'm sure with future updates it will get better. I'm using a targus stylus.
Sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA App
Stylus on Sony Tablet S
I bought these TOUCH SCREEN STYLUS FOR Huawei IDEOS S7 Slim Tablet
on ebay and tested them on my Sony Tablet S and Galaxy S phone.
It works 100x better on my galaxy s phone than on the sony tablet.
They do work on the sony but the sensitivity isn't there, a fair amount of pressure is needed in order for it to respond.
I'm also interested to see if anyone else gets a better result with the targus stylus that sony sells.
I created a short video to show the problem. Go to youtube and search for AntMoore23, go on my channel and watch.
I think for the Sony it has a special resin that allows the screen to have a better black response. I think maybe that's the reason why the stylus response is bad. Just something to keep in mind.
I use a griffin stylus (GC17125) with sketchbook pro every day and it work just fine.
I also tried to build my own stylus with a sponge and some other crap (try a search on youtube) but without success.
did anyone try using the Stylus used in the video here, they call it a Wacom Active Digitizer
http://youtu.be/oty4ukjSIjg
The active digitizer is not the stylus, it's part of the screen technology inside the tablet, similar to the Galaxy Note.

wavy lines

I am an artist, who loved sketching on his ipad, but had to sell that one cuz of its restrictions being apple ..
Now I have an Galaxy tab 10.1 gt 7500 ..
But I seem to get those ugly wavy lines when ever I try to draw diagonal lines
The slower I draw the more wavy they become.
But if I draw it in a quick gesture, it does not show any problems
Have put up a screen grab of me drawing straight lines in Sketchbook Pro
( this problem happens even in other Drawing Apps )
Please do help
Cheers
I checked on mine (in sketchbook) and it works fine. I'd guess there's something wrong with the touchscreen. If it's new, I'd go exchange it, or get warranty service.
I, too have used this app and don't notice wavy lines like that, unless I want wavy ones. I usually use a tablet stylus or brush instead of my finger.
same problems
got a new replacement , yet the problem persists. Drawing with a capacitive stylus too does not give accurate results
Also when taking notes, a lot of words and letters get skipped and the letters dont come out fully
Any of you guys actually use this for note taking ?
Is there any solution ,workaround for this digitiser inaccuracy ?

There's a thread in the apps and theming section that has a list of compatible widgets and apps that work on our tabs. Look for SuperNote. It's perfect for taking notes. For your drawing problems, maybe it's the type of stylus you are using. I have one from Samsung with a rubber tip that works great. I also use a nomad brush for more realistic brush strokes and feel that works great.

The super note app is great !
Its got a faster response time ,
Though is it possible for you to just post a screenshot of you drawing diagonals or circles slowly using a stylus , just want too see if the batch of tablets in the store are having problems
Ok, I've got exactly the same problem!
I guess most ppl won't notice this until they try to actually draw something.
Any luck finding solution?
regards,
arizal
Ok, I tested the stylus on friend's htc desire - same thing. Using finger does not produce waves, at least not that big.
Looks like the problem is related to the contact spot size, small spot - problem.
I guess the problem is the interpolation between the sensors.
I dont know if anything can be done here... But if someone has an idea, please share it!

Arizal

Stylus marking too early

Hey, I'm currently on HC for the Flyer and having trouble with my stylus. It'll start writing/marking the page when its about 2-3mm above the screen. This is pretty annoying since thats my natural holding position. Is there something I'm missing?

Your stylus must have a stuck tip, because it isnt supposed to write until you put pressure on it. In fact I can move my stylus on the screen and it wont mark it unless I apply slight pressure.

Try replacing the battery. I've seen other threads where this behavior was associated with drained batteries.
I had this happen too. It occurred shortly after I installed Quil with the Lenovo app mod I don't know for sure if it was a strange combination of the two or the maybe a stuck pen. All I know is that I did cleared the data, caches (a hard reset if you will) and then reinstalled everything but Quill and I no longer had an issue.
My stylus has a same problem.
It has occured since I bought my flyer. There is always same problem on stock GB, stock HC, cool3D HC, and leedroid HC.
It seems to occurs especially when my hand attatch on the screen...but I'm not sure.
Because of this problem, I can't use non-pen pressure app like tabnotes
Quill is better to use because there is pen prrssure so that stroke is narrow and faint when I can draw a few milimeters above the screen.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I have also had this issue and it seems to clear when I hold the erase button and clear the markings made when 2-3mm above the screen. After that it seems to work normally again. That's just in the Notes app, haven't come across the problem anywhere else.
Hi all!
Please tell me who know....!
Htc Scribe Digital Pen D500 (from Flyer) is compatible with the HTC Evo View 4G ???
I remember when I had this issue, someone in the apps thread advised me to try using the stylus with the buttons facing up. I haven't had a problem since.

[APP] Screen On/Off with Proximity/Light Sensors

I take no credit in the development of this app, I'm merely making a recommendation for those who would find it useful.
IntelliCover 2.0 is a utility which uses your device’s proximity sensor, light sensor and/or accelerometer to turn the screen on and off, allowing fast and efficient access to your phone or tablet.
It turns the screen off automatically when you put your device in your pockets, close its flip cover, store the device in a bag, or even just leave the device facing down on a table. As soon as the device is back in your hand the proximity sensor is triggered again, the screen turns back on and your device in instantly ready for use. This improves productivity immensely on large devices or devices that do not have physical hardware buttons.
IntelliCover 2.0 - Google Play Store
[APP][2.3+][FREE] IntelliCover 2.0 - Display Automation using Proximity/Light - Official XDA Thread
I've been using this app for a couple days with my Cellto Wallet Case and love it.
Open the cover; Screen on. Close the cover; Screen off.
Seems to use a minimal amount of battery, but for the convenience I think it's worth it.
I've been using this app since late last night/early this morning. Seems pretty nice so far. I don't have a flip cover on my GN3, but still like being able to lay my phone face down an the display go off. Also nice that that display comes on when you pick it up. I've yet to put this app on my GN2, but I'm about to install this app and put my Samsung flip cover on it. Not completely sure on getting a flip cover for my GN3 yet, because I've used the $40 flip cover on my GN2 less than 10 times. I think having this app an my flip cover on my GN2 will help my decide if I do want one for my GN3 though!

Very good recommendation! really love the app! btw, how is the battery usage for this kind of app?
Thanks!

Glad you enjoy it. Battery usage is minimal. Barely noticable.
Been using this since the OP and upgraded to a Bear Motion flip cover.
Thanks for the info. I've been using the original version for a year or so and wasn't aware that version 2 was out.
Excellent app suggestion. I used Gravity screen during my E4GT days, and got used to it after a while. We needed that app, since you had a pretty good chance that you would end up with a busted power button as the phone aged. Seems like a similar function.

Android is an awesome thing. We have choice.

Hi,
just like to ask if i can have the apk for the old version? just like to observe which one has better battery consumption. basically the new version is a little bit bigger in terms of size because of the new UI, features, bug fixes and language. but the more simple app is better. at least for me.

Let us know what your conclusion is, I'm intrigued.
Installed it and tried it for a bit, Did not like it for my use so I has been removed.
My phone sits screen up on my desk at work, so if I reach over my phone or something to trigger it on accident, the screen comes on then goes off. It may seem like a small thing but after an hour of using it it I lost count on how many times it would be triggered. all that is going to do for me is kill my battery.
Thanks for the suggestion, seems like a cool idea for some peoples usage.

At first I felt the same way, but with all the configuration options such as screen on delay, screen off delay, proximity, light, proximity+light, etc... I just increased the screen on and off delays till it didn't pick up on accidental stuff like that.
