hi
about a week back i was on ICS Stock
with S-ON , unlocked ( did it via htcdev ) and rooted ( thanks to bigdaddy)
flashed mean rom ics , made a nandroid , and flashed like 3 more ics roms and made nadroid s of em all, so basically was using mean rom 6.4
and then the fat lady came out of the forgotten cave ( plz read JB update )
and all i did was download and install vipers deodexed version via my recovery ( twrp), somehow wasnt impressed ( i thought JB would be out of the world and i must have done something wrong ) so flashed his odexed and then flashed xHausx odexed as well
But all in all my hopes were crushed beneath the fat lady , so i decided to go back to ics
now the issue is , apart from mean rom i am not able to flash any roms ( all ics ) stored on my SD card , as they show failed , couldnt open zip ,
and if i try and wipe all four and restore nandroids ( backups ) , they dont boot at all.
what has happened to my phone, can anyone plz tell me what am i doing wrong.
is it possible that while wiping all four the kernel also gets erased thats why none of the backups boot ??
why apart from mean rom ics , venum ics and all JB zips, i cant flash other ICS roms like
sinister, or bareback or a couple of more
all that happens is phone boots shows me HTC screen and goes back to be blank
just an other update
i tried flashing jellybomb and it never booted , no matter what i did > then i restored my earlier backup of jellybomb and then it got booted easily
same happens with mean rom as well, ICS
You will need to fast boot flash an ICS kernel to go back to an ICS rom

would appreciate some more help here
thicklizard's link has instructions to flash kernels (boot.img)
You'll either need to either find a rom that is compatible with s-on or flash manually through fastboot.

I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it okay... then I flashed a ROM, that also worked fine. I tried to flash a kernel and now it just gets stuck on the HTC screen. I tried restoring my back up, still the same issue. Tried reflashing the ROM, same issue. Not sure how to get it back to normal at this point.
It sounds like the kernel you flashed is either a 2.3.3 kernel that doesn't work on 2.3.4, or it was a bad flash. You should be able to fix this by holding volume down when booting up (opens HBOOT) then choose Recovery and from the recovery you can then either enable USB Mass Storage device and transfer a stock kernel over USB to your SD card then flash the stock kernel, or if you already have a stock kernel on your SD card, you can just select it from the install from zip menu and flash.
This Kernel should work fine (it's stock with CIQ spyware removed):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224659
and after I flash this kernel it should be back to normal.... or should I try to flash a ROM all over again as well? As long as it can definitely be fixed then that's quite alright.... this phone compared to the Epic (which I came from) seems like it's much less fail safe to me.

ROMs usually have kernels. You could just wipe Dalvick cache and cache and flash your original rom (which has it's original kernel). and that should work.
There's a sea of roms. You could try posting on a rom's thread whether a particular kernel is compatible. Just follow the spin of things. Saves from just going round in circles.

Here's a scenario: If you installed a rooted stock 2.3.4 rom then decided to install Silverneedle kernel, your phone will get stuck in this boot-loop because the silverneedle kernel is not compatible with 2.3.4 yet. So by flashing a stock kernel over what is already on there, it should fix the problem. Before you flash the stock kernel clear cache and dalvik. After that flash the kernel and reboot the phone. Chances are it will boot normally. I doubt you will have to reflash a ROM to fix this.
Just cleared the dalvik and the cache, reflashed the ROM hoping to start completely fresh and its still getting stuck...

Then flash a stock kernel. I have had the same problem before. I flashed a ROM, installed a kernel and stuck at HTC boot screen. The fix is to either install a stock kernel through bootloader or flash another ROM in recovery. If you want the best chance of it working the first time, then flash the stock rooted 2.3.4 ROM by xhausx. If you want to try other ROMs and kernels, make sure that your ROM and kernel are compatible. Also use the synergy wipe zip file before flashing to make sure everything is formatted properly. Also, did you flash the extra firmwares that came with the 2.3.4 update? If not, make sure you flash those along with the new radio that just came out.

Take it you didn't do a nandroid before flashing?

Tried to get my nandroid and it still got stuck..
Perhaps I should've also mentioned that my bootloader still says S-ON and I unlocked it using the HTC unlock method.

Not sure about any extra firmwares actually.... currently going to try flashing xhaus' ROM and hope that works...
Flashed the superwipe before flashing the ROM, then flashed the ROM... it went to the HTC screen for a second then just vibrated and then turned black.
When I go into the bootloader when it is loading up the images.... it kept saying "No Image!" for all of them. I'm not having any luck with this at all.

Ok so I'm currently running the latest ICS CleanROM but would like to restore back to my GN nandroid I made. I'm just confused on what steps I need to do. I guess the ICS ROMs use different kernels that are not compatible with GB. In which case I don't know where to get the latest OTA stock kernel from so I can restore back to GB. Been searching and trying to read but it gets confusing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

There is a posted latest OTA stock on android developement , but I think it got pushed back to the 2nd page by now.
He has 2 files , one is a zip and the other a ph98img file.
Now, the text file in the ph98img file is our old stock number so it won't auto install.
Here is what I did, put the first file on the root of the external SD card.
Open up the second file and remove the boot.img file, and put on your desktop or better yet into your fastboot folder that you used to unlock with.
Now, reboot in recovery and wipe data/factory reset. Then install your backup, but don't reboot yet. Flash the 1 st file you downloaded from the OTA kernel post. After that is done , return to main recovery menu.
Now select developer menu, then select reboot to bootloader. After you are in bootloader select fastboot (should say FastbootUSB ) if your phone is plugged in and your in fastboot.
Finally, open up a command prompt from the fastboot folder containing the boot.img from the 2nd file and type in fastboot flash boot boot.img
This will flash the rest of the stock kernel for you . Now ,, just reboot normally and you should be good to go .
Now, this is if the backup nand your restoring was using the stock OTA kernel. If not , its the same process just pull the boot.img out of the kernel from whatever rom your trying to restore.

i just came back to cleanrom 1.5.5 from ics rom and this is what i did.
you need the cleanrom and cleanflash 1.0 to do this.
cleanrom: http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=70
cleanflash: http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=57
extract the rom file and copy the boot.img file and paste on cleanflash folder.
also put the rom file in your ext. sdcard.
now use cleanflash.exe and flash the boot.img first
then from bootloader, go to recovery and wipe then flash the rom
Awesome thanks guys this is helpful. Gonna give it a try.

I believe CleanROM 1.5+ & RezROM 1.4+ ROMs include and automatically install the kernel.
When i bought the player which is the 4.0 us player i rooted it and put steves kernel on it thats it. Today my wife said it was bootlooping so i looked at it and sure enough it is. Checked the memory and there is nothing on it. So i download a new rom put it on and wipe then install and it is still bootlooping the original logo even though the new rom has a different boot screen.

Yes people were experiencing bootloops with steve's 3.0. Try installing the klin's R3 custom kernel or Dark_balor's terra silent.
When i installed the kernel it was back in December and it has been working just fine untill today. Still think it is kernel?
You didn't make a cwm nandroid backup, did you? Because that is what bootlooped mine using Steve's. All I did to solve it is: flashed my own backup, that turned out to be no good, and ended in a full brick (epic facepalm, I know!). Then I flashed kwipper's recovery rom found in the development. After a data/cache wipe, it worked fine. Hope you figure it out!

Well you can always use the full recovery method to get back to normal (note that you will lose all your data. Not on the sdcard though but all of your settings and apps.)
well iv already wiped so everything is gone anyway im not sure how you do the full recovery? I have no nand so if that is what your talking about that is out of the question. Found fixing bootloop which has recovery file so im gonna try that.

It seems that you already have an android device before however samsung devices are different from other android devices (or maybe you did have a samsung device too.). They use odin/heimdall flashing with .tar/.img/.rfs files. The recovery method I talk about is at that link:

Hi, I decided to go back to stock (was on JB Custom) and it all worked fine but now it appears to bootloop on the Samsung logo and wont go further. I take it as I am downgrading to ICS ROM I might have missed something or should it not matter?
The other thing is my battery level is about 38%, I read somewhere it needs to be 70+. Is this the issue? I assume not but wanted to check
I can get into download but not recovery (suggested clearing data etc might help)
Because u hav go back to stock version it wiped out ur recovery use odin to flash the latest recovery it is best to hav more battery left on ur phone 38 probably isnt going to be enough try. Make sure u found the right version of ics for ur phone and try flash it again

Did you install back the stock kernel before changing back to ICS? Or any ICS kernel other than stock?
Just got a GSIII today and have been trying some JB ROMS out, but so far I have not been able to get WiFi working at all with any of them.
I have tried Vanilla RootBox, LiquidJB and SuperNexus but whilst I can see my WiFi AP on all of them and can enter my password all I get is the "Connecting..." message for ages before it gives up?
WiFi works fine on the stock ROM, and there are no obvious settings on the WiFi router itself which would be causing this.
Any advice appreciated!

Thanks, I just spotted a couple of threads mentioning this.
Couple of questions, when you say flash back to stock does that mean through CWM Recovery, or some other way? Does it have to be a straight flash to a downloaded stock ROM or am I able to just "restore" the backup I made?
Thanks again!

Cool, so I've got Odin (I believe that's what I used to root the phone?) Is there a specific .zip I need to flash back to? Also do I need to boot back in to the stock ROM or just stick JB straight back on again?
Please note, when you have flashed back to ics you need to then set up phone and connect to Wi-Fi once, then proceed to flash jb

Excellent. Do I need to download a specific "Stock ICS" ROM to do this? Any pointers as to where I can find this?
Thanks for the help people
I seem to remember I just flashed an old wannamlite Rom in cwm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
These ones. (4.0.4)
Or try http://fus.nanzen.se/
This is if you want to find the original firmware your phone came with.
I'm still not having much luck with this.
Should I be wiping before I flash back to ICS, and then again before back to JB?
I think a wipe before flashing ICS is enough.
But watch the youtube video on the first post on :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
It pretty much explains every part of returning to stock ICS. From there it is just reflashing JB with odin and wifi should work.
Hmm, still not having much luck. I've installed my JB ROM, wiped, gone back to stock ICS using the ROM from the link provided above in ODNI.
But now when I try to reboot in to recovery to re-flash my JB ROM I seem to get a different version of recovery from what I had before and it fails during verification when I try to flash the .zip.
Any advice welcome!
I'm having the same problem here.
BUT, even flasing stock ICS and flasing a custom JB ROM after that does not solve the issue.
Here is what I did in what order. Maybe I'm missing some essential point or whatever:
- full wipe in cwm recovery
- flash stock ICS via Odin (I9300XXBLH3_I9300DBTBLH4_I9300XXLH1_HOME.tar)
- reboot and test WiFi. WiFi works fine! Firmware is 4.0.4
- flash CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4 to gain root again
- boot into CWM Recovery, format /preload (to get rid of apps installing themselves on boot)
- another full wipe
- install zip from sdcard (tried AOKP JB build 4 for i9300 and ParanoidAndroid v2.22)
same old ****! WiFi not conecting!
I would apeciatie any help to solve this problem for me. Aparently reverting to stock ICS has solved this for others but I dont get what I'm donig wrong her...
try some router side adjustments

Okay so I Re-rooted with CF-Root through ODIN and have got CWM recover back, but now when I re-flash JB I still get the same problems, try to connect to WiFi and it just sits there saying "Connecting..." and then gives up!
Is there a specific set of steps for doing this? I connected to WiFi whilst back on the Stock ICS ROM (LG8) and that worked fine, I have tried various combinations of wiping/not wiping at each stage in between JB->ICS->JB with no luck. Do I need a particular Stock ROM to go back to, do I have to use a specific version of ODIN/CF-Root/CWM?
Very annoying as everything else about the Jelly Bean ROMS seems perfect!
Has anyone worked out why JB ROMS are doing this?
I have the same problem
It seems to work for some people to go back to ICS and then flash JB ROMs, but somehow it does not work for us..
I'm trying an old stock ICS now and the will flash cm10. lets see if that helps
I've downloaded a selection of stock and custom ICS roms to try with the process, hopefully something will do the trick!
Also I don't think changing router settings can have anything to do with this as it works fine for every other device I own, including a different handset running JB. However out of curiosity I spent last night playing with all the settings to see if anything would help. It didn't
U said u flashed back to stock.... In that case u lost cwm then ur gonna hafto re flash cwm
