[Q] Storage - How much is used by the OS - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a Nexus 4 with 16GB internal storage. In Settings, it shows that I have approximately 13GB available. Am I correct in assuming that the OS is using the other 5GB?
The reason why I am curious about this is because I am considering buying the Zopo ZP900, which comes with only 4GB of internal memory for Ice Cream Sandwich. Although I've done quite a bit of research on the ZP900, I'm unable to find any resource that documents the size of the "Device memory" and "USB storage" partitions; looks like I might have to actually buy the phone just to find out! I really disklike the idea of buying a phone only to learn that there's minimal available memory.
I've noticed a few user comments on GizChina where users have complained about phones with only 30MB of available internal memory. Yes, the memory can be expanded with an SD card, but some applications require installation to the internal memory.
I searched the forum for an existing thread on this issue, but couldn't find one; please forgive me if this post is re-hahsing an old issue. Thanks.

16-13 = 3. (not 5) and that part of memory taken up by system includes space for installing apps and stuff. Just get a 16 or 32 gb SD. (not for nexus4, I know) yeah some apps go into internal memory. Keep the unmovable ones on internal and move others to SD. mine has 8 gb internal memory. 4gb taken up by system.

yes the cut off space is used by the os and dedicated internal space for installation of apps n games. I think u cant install apps in your remaining internal memory. apps can installed only in dedicated internal memory or sdcard. if can also use ur remaining internal memory as sdcard by the help of rooting.

[Q] 'Move to SD' using internal storage?

I did do a search for this but the only thread I found was for the original Galaxy S and I wanted to check that the answer was the same for the S II.
I currently have no SD card installed in my phone, but obviously have GBs of free space in the internal 'USB storage' partition. If I try and move any installed apps to SD I just get an error about 'not enough memory'. This makes sense because presumably the OS is looking for an actual proper external SD card to be installed and there isn't one, hence the 'not enough memory' error. What I'd like to do though is use the internal 'USB storage' partition instead of an external SD card, is it possible to get the OS to use that partitition instead? I've done a bit of Googling and the answer seems to be no but I thought I'd check with the experts here before I give up entirely. If the answer is no then that's pretty disappointing because it means that the 11.5 GB in the internal USB storage is near useless to me.
I've noticed that some applications will use the internal storage exactly as they used the proper SD storage on my old Desire. For example, Kindle, Airport Mania, Gameloft games and others will install their data files on the internal storage by default; so it seems odd that you can't force other apps to do the same, thereby meaning you'd need the 11.5GB internal storage and a physical SD card to get the most out of the phone.

Please explain to a newbie the memory/storage

I understand on a PC memory is for active stuff and storage is for keeping things you need but can pull into memory for actual use.
If I go to task manager on this phone, it says total memory 803MB, used 588 - free 215MB.
Then it shows all applications 26MB
How do I see how much of my storage is in use? Is that 26MB of whatever sized storage card came with this phone?
ROM vs. RAM?
Thanks
That's showing your RAM, to see how much storage space your phone has left go to Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Storage use
Thanks - it says 8GB 5.5GB available. Internal storage .93GB.
Ever since these tablets and phones came out "memory" seems to be the generic term for just about everything in the device - RAM, ROM, NAND, EMMC, SD...
This is actually not different from a pc so why is the term memory used so freely? Traditionally RAM was/is considered memory. In the phone NAND is the ROM or flash memory. emmc is the internal storage. Sd is the external storage. But they're all called memory, even in spec sheets. Technically I suppose they are all memory, but why not address them with differing terms?
At one time they'd list it as 512 RAM/512ROM or flash rom. And storage would be called storage or sd card. It would save a lot of confusion and arguments that I've seen where two people are correct in what they've said, just incorrect in answering the question asked.

Yup the SD card has the green hornet in it, and the internal memory is like a 1GB free when you get the phone
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d

[Q] Is it possible extend the app storage partition of your phone memory?

Hello experts,
I have a question regarding my phone's internal memory. My new android 4.2.1 phone has 32GB of phone storage, but only 1.5 gigabytes of that is allocated to the "internal storage" partition for app installations etc. The rest is used as an internal SD card for data storage. I also have an actual SD Card of 32GB.
I find the 1.5GB of internal storage a little bit too low and I fear to run out of memory in a few months of intensive use. As I have a large external SD card it is a bit useless for me to also have a huge internal SD card partition and I'd rather add some of that to the 1.5GB of internal storage for apps.
I have googled for quite some time now, but I can only find threads of people trying to extend their internal storage by partitioning an external SD card. This is NOT the same as my problem as my phone storage is large enough but just not properly allocated in my view.
So my question is as follows: is it possible to add a few GB's from my phone storage to my internal storage?
Thanks in advance!
Sander

How to swap/replace internal storage to sd card (make internal sd)

Hi everywone.
I watch more tutorials how and not help me.
I have problem one on my device.
Problem is memory in internal storage (1gb)
In settings->storage i have:
"Internal storage" , "Sd card storage" and "Phone storage"
3x storage, one is my "sd card extern"
All my apps/data/cache going to Internal Storage.
Phone storage always is empty and cant move on phone storage.
On sd card i can move all apps because i have rooted device.
Ok problem is not move apps, problem is so many apps using more "cache" and "data" and saving only in "Internal storage2 /data"
I want cache and data move to sd card or bind auto going to sd card folder like "data" "cache" and other..
No on internal storage. Because i need more spaces.
Internal storage its 1gb.
SD card: 16gb
Phone storage: 1gb
Idk why phone storage its not combine with internal storage like "ONE" and have 2gb.

Don't feel so bad about not receiving any replies on this forum. I have been flashing ROMs through this forum since Windows Mobile 2003 and in that time, xda-developers has become so big and unwieldy that it is VERY difficult to find a forum where people who know the answers can even see your question.
I have been asking essentially the same question as you for over four months and in that time no one has seen the question OR some newbie organiser has moved it to an obviously wrong forum solely to annoy the forum members there! It isn't clear who is running this forum any more but unlike the old days, no one seems technical any more unless they ACTUALLY POST to specific forums.
Do we have the same phone? I have an alps/MT6571 (possibly made by a company in China called HDC) with 16 gig of storage, nothing whatsoever in it and mysteriously no space left (with a few hundred meg showing available most of the time). Something in the extraordinarily badly written ROM (Hexing71_et_lca) is stopping the OS from addressing the storage space.
I even tried prising the back off the phone carefully and inserting a 32 gig sd card in it and designating that as the phone's storage but now the device reports the SD card as storage, there being 32 gig of storage, still nothing whatsoever in it and still mysteriously no space left, still with a few hundred meg showing available most of the time. Something in the extraordinarily badly written Hexing71_et_lca ROM is stopping the OS from addressing ANY storage space!!
Seems like the same phone? No one here knows the answer and no one will accept your challenge. A few users have reported this problem with this phone and this ROM on www.china-devices.com and no one there knows the answer either. There have also been postings on needrom but all trails there have gone dead as well. It seems everyone tries to back up their ROM to SD card, then they try to figure out what is wrong and then so much is wrong with it that everyone gives up.

Visual Land Prestige 7G - Help in Merging Internal Partitions

I have a 8GB Visual Land Prestige 7G tablet that I can't download anymore apps on. Unfortunately, this is not due to lack of space as I still have over 4GB of space left. My problem lies in how the storage space was created.
When made the storage space was split between 3.5GB and 4.5GB, with the first as Internal Storage and later as Internal SD Card. Internal Storage was further decreased by Android Jellybean to ~980MB, which was further decreased to ~500MB from factory installed apps. Unfortunately everything is installed on the Internal Storage, as a result I can't download anymore apps.
I am wanting to find a way to Merge the Partitions in order to use the space fully. I have already rooted the tablet, however I am unable to find any further way to do this as most guides use External SD Cards instead of Internal ones. I am also interesting in using Remix OS on the tablet, however I can't find any guides that are compatible with my device.
I appreciate any and all help anyone can give me in order to use all my space.
