Phone editing - RAZR HD Themes and Apps

Hello,
I am fairy new to android scene and I really enjoyed personalizing my jail broken iPhone. I switched to android cause of the ability to personalize it however I am a little confused I am looking for a way to change some text strings. For instance on the iPhone I was able to change the message that appeared when you entered the wrong passcode. Same as the power off message saying "never" instead. I would like to know how to do this as well as change the icons on the phone I due know how to do this on the iPhone but am really lost on android any help would be great sorry that I don't know a lot of the correct terms.

Well I'm not particularly sure how to change the text on the things you described because I believe you would have to change the framework of the ROM...
As for theme... That's easy, you just need to install an alternative launcher as golauncher, nova or apex... These ha e separate theme packs you can download which will theme the icons and give you ability to change them yourself... But the icons packs won't work with stock launcher if that's what you are using

I use go launcher and what I would like to do is make my own compete theme is there software out there that I could use and I would like to learn how to possible write or understand the code but don't know where to start any suggestions would be great thanks again for the reply

Go to golauncher website... I believe they have certain tools and guides available for you to make your own theme

thanks

[Q] Themes and icons

Having just moved from an iPhone im still learning here so bear with me. It seems as installing custom themes and/or customizing app icons is not as easy as installing winterboard and throwing a theme up. I'm a big buuf/mattahan fan and I've had that theme on my iphone since my 2G. After doing some research it seems that there are a couple of ways to change an app icon. First I could open up the .apk and insert the new icon, then resign the package and put it back on the phone. Second there seems to be an app called metamorph which is similar to winterbord but only works on certain phones.
Am I missing some easier way? I'm willing to spend some time on a package that I could share with others if I knew how.
Thanks

Metamorph does work on the vibrant if you were wondering
Some theme makers also make update.zip's that you can flash from recovery, but most prefer metamorph because its more universal.
also if you use a replacement launcher like ADW launcher which is on the market, then you can download themes from the market and simply choose them from the launchers menu.
In fact I beleive ADW launcher has a buuf theme.
theres also a keyboard app on the market called better keyboard that has a buuf theme (better keyboard is a paid app though)

[Q]

Hello
I'm using LauncherPro and just yesterday I stumbled on this post on xda.
Now, I don't care about the wallpaper, but I really like those buttons. So first I did try to find the icon pack (it is called "Manup's Simple Word Icons 116SET") and then tried to make some of the icons myself, but each time I noticed that the words just aren't readable on the screen (too small!).
So I was wondering, does anybody use such a theme and is willing to shear it, or does somebody has a solution for this? Or is our resolution really that bad?
Thank you in advance!
Hey, I tried using this app too once and had the same problem, I'm not very clued up on Photoshop so never tried to solve it that way......
Instead I used another app custom launcher icons, which gave me the text icons that we're readable. There wasn't much customization in it though so got bored quickly, I think the icons in that picture are actually blank icons placed over a custom dock background which has the text on it.
I've done it that way before a while ago, let me have a search for the theme which came with blank icons n ill get back to you.
EDIT: The theme I used for the blank icons was called sense adw theme by androidfeens.
You can use the blank icons from that then find a custom dock with the text on.

No I tell a lie he did actually use that app to make the text icons and then placed them on top of a custom dock. Must be our resolution that sucks with the app, oh well glad you reminded me about this just made my own custom dock again.

Interesting approach, but the only restriction is that this way of working limits the amount of docks to just one, as the dock-background is the same for every dock..
Yeh that is a problem for multi dock users, doesn't affect me as I only use one, for the basic phone functions.

Same when I used it u i forget I have them, and found it easier to just use shortcuts

A bit late, but I've found an app that creates readable word icons! It is called 'Simple text - text icon creator', is made by 'redphx' and can be found in the market for free. For a screenshot, check attachment.

[Q] multipicture live wallpaper

ok so i installed this app from the market an hour ago and for the life of me i cant get 5 different wallpapers up. im running unnamed/entropy dd, w/ adw ex. i dont understand what im doing wrong ive added the 5 screen settings and set each picture source to the picture i wanted on that particular screen. hit back and set wallpaper. go home and i only have one wallpaper... ive been messing around for an hour now and cant figure out how/ what settings work . could some one who is familiar with this app assist me.... thanks
Really 75 views and no one has any insight?
This forum is built around the sgh-i777, not the market apps that run on it. The app's dev would be able to help you out better than we would.
I've been wondering if I'd like an app like that, so when I get a chance I'll check it out. But in the mean time, see about emailing the dev.

Thanks but Ive heard tons of ppl talking about how great it is so I figure they would be able to give a little insight on the subject, hoping someone would of had the same problem and offer a helping hand.... but thanks for the advise.
And just an fyi, this fourm is for a specific devise and anything relating to it... Hence the q&a and themes and APPS.
You might want to look in the Android Theme subsection of the Android Hacking and Development section. I know kgill uses that app in a number of his themes.
Or check the Just Reveal blog. Im pretty sure I've seen instructions there. Sorry I don't have a link handy.

yea i do this just fine. I use go launcher so maybe there is somehting in adw overriding what you are doing in multi picture?
also check under advanced settings there is a "workaround for some home ..."
I have mine set to force 5 screen and have go laucher set for 5 desktops. make sure you force that to the number you have in adw.
ok stupid mistake, had to set scrollable wallpaper on adw. Durrrrrr

[Q] [HOW TO] Creating a new theme for Android

I'm a newbie in the world of theme development but I have a game changing UI concept. I would request you all to kindly show me a way to create a custom skin for android. Like htc made sense, samsung made touchwiz, I would like to create my own skin on top of the stock android interface with almost everything different.
Thanx in advance!
I dont think androids stock launcher is skinnable ...
You can install an alternative launcher like "go launcher ex" or "ADW launcher"
Those are skinnable and there are tutorials on making themes.

I was not looking for that.
I meant I wanted to change the whole way Android looks and feels.
Kind of like the difference of the interface between stock Android and Samsung TouchWiz.

If you want to do so, you have to write a new Launcher/HSR (Home screen replacement) yourself.
You will need advanced Java skills and a lot of time.

I have loads of time and I know Java.
I'm willing to do it. Wish someone would guide me. Where to begin? I've not done anything like this before!

[Q] How do I remove the google bar from my home screen?

First, I'm not a developer (any more), just a novice user of a Nexus 10.
I've been playing with various widgets, putting them on the home screen & building groups of apps to keep the screen simple,
so I can actually see my wallpaper. (Nothing special, just pics I like.)
Problem is that huge Google bar at the top. Is there an simple way to get rid of it, like the select-drag-drop for other home screen stuff.?
Also, there seems to be some limits on where I can actually put apps or widgets. Is there a way to adjust this too?
I'd really like to put a dashboard widget in place of that Google bar.
Finally, is there a way to disable Google when I select or swipe nearby the bottom of the screen?
This is a real pain-in-the-patootie when playing solitaire & the cards get near the bottom of the screen.
Thanks in advance. I could not find this anywhere in the Q&A forum for Android.
Try a different launcher, like nova, which will allow you to disable the persistent search bar.
Ok, what' a "launcher"?

Sounds helpful, if I knew what a launcher is.
I am soooooo out of date re: computers of any kind anymore...
Just go on google play and search "launcher"! It is the app which launches other apps, provides the app drawer, and many other setting options, like how pages scroll, etc.
Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I'll go see whats I can find, & come back here to make sure its a good one.
Root file manager under system then apps. Look for Google search bar and add .back at end then restart phone

Sounds good, a real engineering solution instead of a workaround (not that there is anything wrong with a workaround).
How to I get to the root file system to modify filenames?
I'm on a Nexus 10. Any idea what app/widget/setting function to use?
I've got "androzip" which let's me see the file system down to a certain point ( /.) & shows a bunch of folders,
but crashes when I try to see what's in the folder named "root"
Suggested launcher?

Which one is best/most reliable/free-or-cheap?
If I muck this thing up, Duh Hubby will get really upset!
I know there is/was a list of recommended apps & widgets, but can't find the thread now. Don't know if it mentioned a launcher anyway.
Thanks again!

I just now realized that you suggest a launcher here... Doh!
The other suggestion about changing s filename may be good too. I suspect a launcher will be safer for me.
Yes, using a launcher is better. Otherwise you'd have to unlock the bootloader of Nexus 10, which will wipe all your data, then set it up all over again and restore backed up data, then get into the root filesystem and modify the file name of the app file, which can be too much since you say you're not experienced (unless you're interested in learning to do all that) The app is called QuickSearchBox.apk btw not GoogleSearchBox.apk.
Also, custom launchers like Nova and Apex launcher look exactly the same as the default launcher you're using right now, but have a boatload of additional features a lot of which you may find interesting and useful. The default (stock) launcher is very basic in functionality.

Thanks!
Much nicer than Android basic, more "toys" to play with & no Google bar at the top!
I even learned what a home screen actually is & have set up several for different uses.
Another fun time waster to play with beyond just games... would be nice to set
different wallpaper for each screen, but being able to actually see the whole
image is really nice.
I think I'll get the Pro version to get rid of other Google launch with the sweep/touch near
the bottom of screen- the answer to the second part of my original question.
Thanks to all who replied... I feel like such a noon at this point. These forums are truly the best place
to find/get answers to basics questions. The Help provided by Google is distinctly lacking in detail.
Now to search for answers to more questions....
damn. the stock launcher is actually pretty nice on the hydro edge at least for my pop but I want that damned google bar gone (BUT WANT google search and google now) I just want the stupid useless homescreen bar gone (its too small for him to use he can't hit the mic icon reliably) so I just put a regular voice search icon on the screen for him.
Grrr I hate when they "shove" things down your throat like that.

Agree with you
Is there any way to go into system and delete it all together?
You can't delete system apps unless you are rooted, which if you have a nexus device than this is super easy
Yes as mentioned before the simple fix is just use another launcher, there are many amazing ones to pick from often with a free version that works great
As for removing the bar from the stock launcher the easiest way would be to decompile the .apk and find the xml file for it and chances are change a simple bit of code from true to false but without ever decompiling this myself can't say how its set up. But in truth this may be more work than it is worth
