Ive just taken delivery of my new Streak, its running 2.1 and so far I am very impressed.
One thing I would like to do is watch movies on my phone, currently they are stored on my NAS drive which supports DLNA and SMB.
Does anyone know of a way of streaming directly from a NAS drive, I dont want to use VLC or anything similar as you need to involve the PC. I have tried an app from the market place called remote media BETA but it doesnt work, I can see the files but not play them.
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Try an app called ROCKPLAYER
Thanks, I have installed the latest version of RockPlayer, universal and ARM 7. I cant see the settings for network streaming. Is this version different as I have read the Beta versions were better than the current versions.
Hi,
What you need is the app 'ES FILE EXPLORER'
Works great for me to play video and audio from my NAS drive.
Let me know how you get on.

Hi,
thanks for the input. Now finally I can see my share, but
streaming is not possible. I tried various .avi - Files. I always get the
massage that streaming is not possible for that filetype and the file
has to be cached (never waited that long....).
Any input?
Many thanks..
It will be a codec problem, I have problems some videos not sure which aren't compatable with streak : ( yet anyway.

Thanks for the info, I can see all the files now. Doesnt seem to like AVI, as you say its likely to be a codec problem. A codec pack for android would be a great app.
What Video format are you using at the mo, I will convert a few of my movies.
I'm working on what codec works best, ill post my results soon.

Thanks for the update, I'll convert a few avi's to m4v and see what settings work the best.
Ok a quick update,
If anyone has problems after encoding with it still caching video before it plays, download the util for pc called 'metadatamover 0.9' this fixes that.

When I try to open any .avi video, I just get a "Sorry, not supported media type" error. But with Rockplayer, i am able to play avi files when on sdcard.
Can't I somehow send it to the rockplayer?
Converting the files is not an option for me.
Ye I tried it link to rockplayer as well I has no luck, it pretty sure that rockplayer Just doesn't have support for this yet.

I've been through all of the same grief with AVI files and Rockplayer and never got it to work. In the end I decided it was easier to convert the files to mp4 and load them to the sd card.
The best converter I found was Format Factory, which is free. Takes some fiddling with the codecs to get precisely the right format for the streak, but works a treat.
If anybody wants the codec config file, PM me.

isn't is possible that orb can do the job. www.orb.com
kasperke, unfortunately that reuires a running app on your pc. I'd like access remote disk on LAN without the need for a running computer.

Just purchase the app in the market and put the movies on your SD card. You can drag and drop. It is just as simple as using iTunes, if not more simple because iTunes is prohibitive and not very user friendly.
If you're watching movies at home you can use VLC Stream and Convert. It encodes movies on your computer and transfers them. Until the X10 has native DNLA support this is the next best option. Perhaps it may be even better because anything you can decode on the computer is virtually what you can watch on the X10, other than Real Media encoded files in my experience. Haven't contacted the developer (TravelDevel - very awesome developer), so it could just be the codecs on my computer. Not too sure.. (video works, sound doesn't)
Sorted. Thanks to all for your help
I use SuperC to convert anything I'm putting on, that way you know it will play and can resize to fit the screen perfectly.
http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
Handbrake is pretty sweet for ripping dvds, too
It produces mp4 files which can then be watched with the shipped player

I use xilisoft video convertor to convert my movies from my K750i - W800i - PSP - W960i - X10i days.
Still like using it.
I think whichever softwares you use, as long as you get the configurations right and save to mp4, it should be all right~
I've downloaded the handbrake as recomended but I'm unable to get it to rip any DVDs. All I'm getting after scanning is a black blank box and nothing else. Can anybody help or recomend any other free software I can use. I have got aura dvd ripper pro which I downloaded to use for my kids arcos 405 but the audio track is always around 5 seconds behind the picture.
Where am I going wrong? You guy's all seem to have it sorted. I spend a lot of time in hospital and would so like to rip my films and put them on my X10 so I can watch them when I'm away.
Has any of you cleaver lot got any goo ideas onhow I should proceed??
Sorry for hijacking, which format is best suited for X10 when I convert with handbrake ?
Picture size, file format.. ?
Hi XDA community
In what format should I convert videos for the Asus Transformer Prime, for a good quality.............
I have a movie (1.25 GB avi.) -> (. 3.12 GB MP4) format.
Used program =
- Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate
- Profil Motorola Xoom / H.264 Video
- 1280x720
[Q]
- Is this normal (1.87 GB more)?
- Are there any conversion settings for the Prime (size, format, etc.)?
- Which program would you recommend?
Thank you for your help

Yup. This is one of the things that makes me happiest about moving from my iPad to an Android tablet.
You don't need to convert anything. You can play avi, mkv, wmv with a third party app.
I heard that Dice player is good. In my phone I used Mobo player or Mxvideo player.
thanks all
Missing Video Conversion
The conversion I'd like to understand is .wtv to playable on Android.
We've got quite a few computers in this household running Windows Media Center. They record OTA HD TV on a house server in .wtv (MSFT proprietary) format. But none of the players I've tried play .wtv out of box, yet.
And when the Win 8 slates appear, they WILL interoperate with .wtv and be harder to dislodge. So this would be a good time to source .wtv format files in a DLNA scheme.
I'm having issues playing WMV or M4V from BluRay digital copies.
Is there something that will play these types of files? MX Player does not work.
I don't have a wmv or m4v file at hand but you could try dice player. It's my favorite so far.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.trial
in the specs it states that it can run wmv and m4v

dude don't mess with that drm garbage. Even if it would work don't reward bad behavior (drm). My mom now hates drm because she mistakenly bought a couple movies on iTunes and now her reward for not bittorrenting it is they're now worthless to her in her tf101 (or any Android device). Just use tpb for what you need. Besides they can recommpress or remove drm in the time it takes you to poop. They're pros

These are heavily DRMed. If you did not get a Digital Copy version that is compatible with Android then you are screwed. The WMV is a heavily DRMed Windows file, and the M4V is for iTunes. Only a few BluRays were released that had an Android version too.
Honestly, if you have a BluRay player in your PC is easier to rip it to another format. Otherwise, you have to breach the DRM and convert it to a non-DRM version.
I hate the digital copy stuff, but the Ultraviolet stuff is kinda neat. At least you can use the Flixster (Movies) app to view them streaming on Android. However, only a few use it and its still a DRM nightmare.

Tell me about it! It's like I'm getting punished for "doing the right thing".
To be honest - I got the Back to the Future BR trilogy (I'm one of those huge nerdy fans) and thought: "Sweet, as a bonus - I'll get to play this back anywhere!" So I loaded up the M4V into iTunes (which works just fine with my Apple TV).
But I tried getting the movies on my tablet - where they really count (especially during travel) - and nothing.
It really is hard to "be good" when you pay for a product and then have to jump through hoops and over hurdles (wasting hours of your own time) to make use of something you OWN.
I can open up any BT client and get the full HD-BR rips in FAR less time than it'll take me to figure out how to get my rightfully purchased copies onto a media player (that I also own).
Thanks for the tips everyone!

The 4 GB limit is a FAT32 filesize limit. Only the SDCARD is FAT32 so this is should not true of the internal storage. If you download the file on your prime and store it on the internal storage it should work fine. If you need to put in on your SDCARD than you would need to split them or compress them to be under 4GB since it would be FAT32. Or you can store it some where else and stream it (if were are talking videos and on topic).
Try DVD Catalyst.
I use that to convert MY DVD's to work on my Nook Color. I have not looked if there is a preset for the Transformer Prime yet but I did copy some movies that I converted for the Nook to my TP and they look great.
Try EXTFAT
I formatted my external sdcard as extfat in Windows 7 and have a 7.50 gb blueray movie on it which plays flawlessly.
I know everyone keep giving high praise to MX Player but it has fail to HW decode all of my various MKV files. As for file size limitation, ATP can read NTFS just fine.

Prime have no problem with files larger than 4gb. Works good on the internal storage. And if you have a sdcard you format it to NTFS.
I have format my microsd to NTFS and played a 8gb mkv movie without problems

I agree, mx sucks, use bs player, everything is hardware accelerated.

I havent had any problems with MX.
It plays every MKV I throw at it, even those with heavily animated subtitles.
Full disclosure: They were all 720p, perhaps the HW v. SW decoding doesn't become seriously relevant until 1080?

I've installed mobo player.
i've just put on avatar, transformers 3 and warrior. as i dragged them across the pc started converting them. each of them looked ok in the folder. when i unplugged the phone and tried playing them they were just about 5 minutes long with just a bit of music.
i'm completely stuck and baffled...
just tried again, and again, only 4 minutes 51 secs of video played. i don't understand why. is it because i'm uploading using my pc?
why is the pc trying to convert my file format as i'm trying to transfer it? confused!!!
I play 720p mp4 flawlessly with Mvideoplayer. I wasn't promted to convert my MP4 files when I copied them from my PC to my phone, but it did come up when I did it with some AVI files. I clicked no to conversion and they play fine on my phone.
OK, so i've now tried loading another type of file, avi, to the phone. it was a 6.2GB movie. It didn't load, said it was too big!!! WTF!
this is some FAT32 issue right?
But this still doesn't solve my original problem.
I've loaded many different files, many types, different sizes.... But it seems like all the stock video player (and now MOBO Player) wants to do is play only 4 minutes 51 seconds........
but when you look at the file through astro or the pc, it shows the true length of the file.... thnk i'm missing something here, it may be basic, but please help someone. been at this all day with no luck!!
wmv
anybody knows about a player for wmv files? I tried using the Mx Video Player but it says it doesn't support it.
I don't whether you guys looking for the free or paid apps
but
I personally using rockplayer lite and it does work with almost every thing especially if you use "play with hardware acceleration" then every thinh up to 3.5 gb film is work pefectly
I got also a PowerDVD mobile (violation of the xda ...) hacked one so it work well.
so i cannnot post a apk.
Try diceplayer

I transferred movies onto mine, six files ranging from about 700mb to 1.6gb in avi format and they play without any problems on mobo player,I also have power dvd mobile legit version and that plays them as well, the only thing I find with power dvd is it stops playing now and again and I have to press play for it to continue.
I'm on windows 7 and that asks me do I want to convert it,I don't generally but with the planet of the apes I did but it played ok just a smaller file size.
The only thing I can suggest if you haven't already done so is instead of drag and drop, try right clicking on the file and copy/paste and see if that makes a difference??

i tried like mx video player. mobo player etc almost anything with neon codec support. it can barely play a 720p wmv properly, audio just out of sync and video is laggy. something is not right here. however i try some other resolution like 480p and it works fine.
my ex optimus 3d can even play almost all video format with hardware acceleration support.
some media players does not use hardware acceleration!! thats is way is not work fluently

Hi,
What is the best program to play movies and subtitles for XPS?
If you try to copy videos or audio it will sometimes ask you to format the file, simply don't allow this when the window pops up.
This will be different for every computer depending on what codecs you have installed.
Also sounds like your possibly not waiting long enough for the files to copy over? Might not be showing the progress bar for what ever reason, slow pc?
Replace the miniUSB cable perhaps with another.
Try a different computer to drag and drop the files across.
There's a 2gb file size limit with the fat file system, a 720p or lower avi movie that's about 700mb is plenty quality for a screen this small, you don't need large blueray 1080p clips taking up memory for a very minor difference in quality.
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
Also you can put files anywhere on the memory, player will pick up the files automatically.
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
If you use a combination of bubbleupnp and dice player you can play almost all movie formats just fine. It is perfectly possible to play videos from other dlna servers as well as play videos from the phone on other dlna renderers.

Hey guys, I've recently been trying to figure out the best way to convert some of my movies for my Note 2. I've downloaded Handbrake and tested it out but I can't seem to figure out the best settings. I've also got DVDFab, ANYDVD HD, and a few others. So anyone with experience converting movies for use on the N2 please let me know what program & what settings you are using. What I'd really like to accomplish is to convert some of my Blu-Rays to the exact resolution of my screen.
Thanks in advance!!!

I'm wondering this as well. I see the phone will play some mkv files with h.264 but all players seem to not have audio with the exception of one (it was loaded with ads, forgot the name).
I used to have a free key for magic DVD ripper, but it stopped working.
I also tried handbrake but it never seemed to be able to sync audio with video.
Now I use DVD catalyst, which seems to make much larger files, but it works.
Auto gk is pretty good. I use it in conjunction with DVD fab decryptor, and DVD shrink in conjuction with DVD decryptor. There are a ton out there, and of you visit doom9(a video editing forum) there are plenty of guides. Good luck
Edit: mx player plays almost anything you throw at it, AMD vnc media player is great, but you have to sideload it after downloading from the net.
