[Q] install new CWMrecovery on 2.3.5 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
I'm trying to get a new custom recovery on my phone. Im on FW 2.3.5.
I've downloaded Rom Manager, and all looks fine. When i try to boot into recovery mode to install a custom rom it doesnt say cwm recovery... it says Android recovery.... and i cant install a custom rom from there. Yes. My phone is rooted, and i granted Rom Manager SU access
It says in red..... E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
I'm sure if i first upgrade my FW to ICS or JB then there would be no problem.
However. Im affraid that if i update, my touch wont work. I broke my phone 2 months ago, and got it repaired. But the touch wouldnt work unless they downgraded it to 2.3.5. (a mainboard issue due to custom rom. They said)
I really want to try to have a custom rom and see if the touch works in here, or if im stuck using FW 2.3.5
Do i need a new kernel where the CWM recovery is already included or what?
Model: GT-I9100
Current kernel: XWKI8
Edit
Is it possible for me to flash with a custom rom differently?
Maybe connect to Odin and press the "phone" button and choose a custom rom? Or another program.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but im kinda new to this

Don't use ROM Manager, as it is not fully compatible with our phone.
You have to flash a kernel containing the CWM recovery you want/need, or alternatively you can flash only the (temporaily) CWM recovery.
Have a lok here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28178105
In first post Method 1 > Instruction 2.
Just download and flash "cwm-touch-6.0.1.2-i9100.zip" in stock recovery:
1. Put the previously downloaded cwm-touch-6.0.x.x-i9100.zip file on your external sd card.
2. Boot into stock recovery (volume up+home+power), and select "apply update from external storage". Now select the cwm-touch-6.x.x.x-i9100.zip file you copied in previous step (this step gives a temporary flash that will disappear after reboot)
You get CWM recovery interface (this custom recovery is temporary, not permanent)
3. Inside CWM, select "install zip from sdcard". Then, select "choose zip from sdcard". Now, scroll down to the custom ROM zip file and hit power button to install it.
Good luck !

Thanks a lot for the fast reply
Edit
I was right. The touch wont work on new rom.
Now i just have to test loads of roms to see which ones work

[Q] Failure on installing Custom ROMS!

I have literally read all the threads here about installing custom roms...
however my phone doesn't seem to work..
I have Galaxy S Vibrant.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
I got help from this 'noob guide' but still I have different problem.
I have froyo. (2.2) and my phone is rooted. (one click root)
I installed ROM Manager (free) and flashed it. and then when i reboot into recovery, and click 'reinstall packages' I get the following notifications:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
What's the problem with my method?
On the forums somewhere there's some tutorial on how to get arround that but for me its easier to downgrade to stock 2.1 using Odin and then root and get clockwork and you wont have that problem
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
you have a 3e recovery since you upgraded to 2.2 You need to either modify it by following the thread in the development section or....
odin back to 2.1, let it boot, root it.
install rom manager, install CWM recovery.
reboot into CWM recovery, you'll probably have to reinstall packages.
Flash w/e custom rom you want. Just be mindful of voodoo and whatnot.
clicky thanks if it helped.

You might need this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848737
Hi,
Try this one:
1. Download one of stock kernel from this thread which is required by your ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870480
2. Put it in internal SDCard and change name to update.zip
3. Flash latest CWM through ROM Manager
4. Reboot into recovery via ROM manager
5. Choose 'Reinstall packages' when rebooting to recovery. You may need to do it twice.
6. After successfully reboot into recovery, you can flash your ROM now as usual. Put your ROM file zip in internal SDcard, then you can 'choose zip from sdcard'.
Good luck.
IN the noob guide I state you need the 3e modified recovery, stock 3e will not allow you to install CWR.
From the guide:
If you have issues flashing Clockwork Recovery's update.zip, it is because the new stock recovery (3E). Please see this thread.

Like others said, you have a lot of choices.
1 -use the modified 3e
2 -odin to stock JFD and use the update.zip to root, RM, CWR, flash rom of choice
3 -odin using the ALT METHOD in the noob guide, flash rom of choice
I personally followed this tutorial and it worked a treat:

[Q] cant get into clockwork mod on vibrant

Ok this is probably a noob question,
i have a vibrant 2.2 tmobile, i just did the 3e recovery mod so that i could root the phone, i finally got it rooted and Im positive it is (terminal emulator says # when i type su,and superuser is working so Im pretty sure its rooted) so when i go into rom manager and flash clockworkmod recovery it always says it works but i cant get into the new recovery only the stock and i cant backup my original rom, does anyone know how to fix this so i can get into clockworkmod recovery?
Im new to rooting so sorry if this is a extremely noob question.
from stock recovery, select "reinstall packages"
I tried reinstalling the packages from the stock recovery but it takes me back to the stock recovery, Ive tried that many times but i never get the clockworkmod recovery, i have no idea why it wont enter the clockworkmod recovery? Can i install it without rom manager?
Download "update.zip" that is attached to this post....place it on the ROOT of your sdcard (not in any folders)
now this is the voodoo edition of clockwork....we are going to want to disable this to avoid issues (sorry, i dont have a normal clockwork available). so also download the disable voodoo .zip attached to this post.
DONT UNZIP EITHER FILE. DOWNLOAD THEM, AND PLACE THEM BOTH ON YOUR SDCARD AS IS!!
follow these instructions exactly:
1. place both files on root of sd
2. reboot into stock recovery
3. "reinstall packages"
3a. if it brings the red clockwork recovery, move onto step 4.
3b. if you dont see clockworkmod, choose reinstall packages again...if you see it move onto step 4.
3c. if you still dont see it, i cant help you further
4. now that you are in clockwork, DONT REBOOT OR FLASH ANYTHING YET, we need to disable voodoo
5. in clockwork choose "install zip from sdcard"
6. choose "choose zip from sdcard"
7. scroll to the disable voodoo zip and select that...confirm install, select "yes"
8. it should take less than a second, youll see "installation complete". (if you see "installation aborted" dont worry, just move on with the steps...see my explanation below)
9. Reboot before flashing anything, very important
10. you are now ready to flash using clockwork mod
PS - im not sure if youre familiar with voodoo, what it is/how it works....but the disable voodoo zip is just a precaution. im not sure if voodoo is built into this edition of clockwork, or if you actually have to have a voodoo kernel to actually be able to activate it. even though i think you need to have a compatible kernel, its better to play it safe.
with that said THERE IS A POSSIBLILTY THAT WHEN YOU FLASH THE DISABLE VOODOO, YOU MAY GET "INSTALLATION ABORTED"....dont worry continue on with teh steps, that just means that voodoo does not actually exist for you, which is probably ideal anyway
It still didn't work, i must be doing something Ive tried everything but it just wont go to clockworkmod.

Have you tried the toolbox?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509
No i haven't tried toolbox yet but ill give it a shot.
I had a similar issue...
Are you getting the error "signature verification failed"?
No I haven't gotten a single error message, i flash clockworkmod recovery and it says success, I reboot into recovery i get the stock recovery, so Ive tried reinstall packages several times and i never get an error message although when I do hit reinstall packages it goes through in like 2 seconds but It never lets me into clockworkmod.
Use AIO Toolbox (recomended) -> install USB Vibrant drivers (if you don't have them, included with AIO Toolbox) and flash stock 2.1 rom (included in AIO Toolbox), after that use rom manager (from market) and install clockwork recovery, then download any kernel (for 2.1 rom of course) with root and flash it thru already installed CWM or flash ANY rooted custom rom - that's all (and it will take about 0,5h - not big deal).
toolbox is the way to go it will do everything for you just simply follow the steps from top to bottom. and you will be fine but before you go with tool box do read the noob guide it will surely make u understand the functionality of the toolbox. good luck
Hmmm......
Ok ill give that a try hopefully that will work.

This is the issue I am getting, even when using the files mentioned on this post.
How did you solve this problem?
EDIT: Just used the AIO Toolkit, restored to stock, rooted, installed ROM Manager, then went ahead and installed my custom ROM! HoneyGinger is talking to me and getting itself set up. Lovely!
Hey guys,
I was running 2.2 on my vibrant and was having issues with cwm as well. I followed the advice here and it worked great. Flashed Nero v3 and my phone is running like a champ!
Thanks again to everyone for their expertise.

Can't get into ClockwordMod Recovery, need help please

I keep trying to get in, but I'm always getting sent to the stock recovery... this is what i'm doing
first I installed root access... Update.zip is in the internal memory (if i put it on the SD card, when I click reinstall it says file isn't found . . . ?), Update.zip is still there (not sure if I was supposed to remove it)
1. Open Rommanager
2. Clck Flash Recovery ClockworkMod Recovery
3. Pick Vibrant (MTD)
4. Pick ClockworkMod 2.x
5. Click Reboot into Recovery
when I do this it brings me to the stock recovery, tried about 3-4 times now with no success
Question: Are you on the stock rom?
If so, you can select "Galaxy S Vibrant" in Rom Manager to flash CWM, then reboot to recovery. The MTD one I believe is for 2.3 roms that can't boot into CWM via 3 button combo.
first off u have root correct? u have to install packages twice first. Then u will end up in green recovery. Then from green recovery flash any rom. But if ur trying to flash cm, u wanna pick 3x not 2x.
Ur update package could be corrupt, get a new one.
nevermind, i figured it out, i just simply rooted it with CWM manually instead

Transitioning from Captivate to SGS2 i9100

So I recently bought an unlocked international version of the Samsung Galaxy S2, and so far I freaking love this phone. It's staying connected to wifi networks just fine, so I'm glad I haven't experienced that issue like many others have (-keeps fingers crossed-). Also no yellow tint so far.
I am coming to this phone from a Samsung Captivate, and I'm loving the FUNCTIONAL GPS, the front-facing camera, and everything else this phone has that the original Galaxy S should have had. However, I need a bit of help on the development side of things, because I want to flash Cognition as soon as I can.
I'm not a complete noob, but I apologize if I'm asking anything that's already been answered, so please, no "L2USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION N00B, LOLZ" trolling on here.
I followed instructions for rooting the phone just fine, and I flashed ROM's (Darky, Serendipity, Cognition, Phoenix Unleashed, CM7) plenty on my Captivate, so I understand how Odin, download mode, etc. all works.
I've got the phone rooted, downloaded the Cognition 1.6 ROM and currently trying to flash it through ROM Manager. Signature verification failed when I'm in recovery mode. I'm just wondering if there's some sort of step like on the original SGS where I have to flash to stock with Odin, then flash the ROM, etc. It's currently on KE7 firmware.
One more thing, I just realized I don't really know how to get into recovery mode on this phone either. I know Download Mode is Home + Power + Volume Down, what's recovery? Thanks in advance!
Recovery Mode is Home + Power + Volume UP .
ROM manager
Be better to follow the instructions as given for that rom .
Installation Instructions:
I highly recommend flashing the full rom! (updates can be unpredictable)
(If you have problems with the update version, flash the full rom instead)
BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!
Download the rom zip from below (don't rename it!)
Put the downloaded zip file on your internal sdcard
Reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery
(don't do this from rom manager, it won't work)
Select Install zip from sdcard
Select Browse for zip on sdcard
Select the zip file you put on your sdcard above

I just love this community!
Yes, I did follow the ROM's instructions. As I did when I was on the SGS. It's giving me "File verification signature failed!" message in recovery. That's my problem, not figuring out how to do the whole process.
Is it because it's Android Recovery 3e instead of 2e, like the problem with Froyo on the first Galaxy S? If so, how would I revert back to 2e recovery if it was 3e stock to begin with?

Yes but that's just my problem, rebooting into ClockworkMod Recovery. It's still giving me the stock 3e Android recovery, which has file signature verification enabled. I'm following the instructions but a few steps are left out because most people on here are more experienced with this phone, whereas I just switched.
On the old one, I would use Odin to go back to 2.1 Eclair and get 2e recovery before flashing a ROM. No idea how to get around file signature verification on this one.

Something wrong then suggest ask in rom post or try another rom .
Basics are as always flash a rom with root and CWM .
Unzip rom if required
Then load rom into memory card boot to 3e or 4e recovery choose zip and install .
You can toggle signature verification off in CWM .
The method works on 3e and 4e for definite .

Nevermind, I figured it out, but what you said helps others who run into this situation. I used the old method of rooting, using CF Root gives me the CWM Manager app and I was able to get into Recovery 4 this way.

[Q] Gnote warranty replacement. Rooted w Odin. ROMS abort installation...why? Stuck w

My old one started getting the sim card error.Still under warranty so...new phone in hand. (Refurb) I rooted using Odin 3v1.85 installed SuperUser and ClockworkModRecovery. All moves along fine. Now I try to install ROM zips (tried three) and they all abort quickly. It starts opening and checking and aborts saying error with zip file. I have downloaded three different ROMs and redid it from different sites too...same thing. What am I doing wrong?
Did you update your recovery after rooting? I recommend twrp which can be found in the original development section.
"Update my recovery" Hmmmm....since I am unsure what you mean...I guess not. TOG recommended TWRP over CWM too. I'll go take a look see. By "original dev section" I assume you mean the other subforum?
Quick explanation of updating my recovery?
Thanks for your valuable time. Here, have a coffee...U)
EDIT:
OK, I went, found and downloaded the latest TWRP2.zp for Odin install, since I'm most familiar with that method. So, am I right in these steps?
1. Re-root w Odin using .tar file from the TWRP.zip using the PDA button.
2.Update?
3. Reboot into recovery (does twrp use the same method as cwm?)
3.Install ROM zip of choice...rejoice?
That's way too complicated broseph...
You still have cwm right?
Just Go back to the twrp thread, download the recovery flashable zip.
Put it on your sdcard and flash it in cwm like a Rom.
Once that's done reboot recovery and you'll now have twrp
Button combos are built into the boatloaders, changing recovery has no effect on them whatsoever.
OK
Thanks again all....I did all of the above and finally got the ROM to load, then Gapps, and the rest of the drill. I never could access my back-up that I stored on my ext SD card and the card is not showing in any file explorers (although it shows in storage, under settings ?).
AT least I have a functioning phone...yay.
Sd card is named as /emmc and several other names.
