I am running Android version 4.0.3, Build number IML74.K.US_epad_9.4.2.28-20120525.
I don't recall how I rooted, but it was an easy one step process.
Now I am in the position where I'd like to get all the firmware and JB updates for my device, but I cannot with a rooted device.
I have read different methods, one involving Rootkeeper and others involving restoring the device back to factory after a backup, getting all the updates somehow, and then re-rooting somehow and restoring the backup from Titanium.
Have also read about people loading the firmware files on a microSD card and going from there. I've had nothing but trouble with my microSD slot. Last time the card got stuck in there and I had to use tweezers and a lot of care to get the card out.
So I guess my question really is, for someone with my situation, what is the simplest way to achieve what i want to do? Where can I find a procedure and the files to go with it, including the update files and a way to do a JB root. If an external storage card is required, can the SD slot in the keyboard dock be used?
Any help is appreciated since I cannot find an exact answer to this question. Thank you.

I never did anything to unlock it, so I suspect it is locked.
I read somewhere that if you boot up while pressing the Vol Down button, it will tell whether it is locked or unlocked (Two vs three icons). I tried this, but i saw no indicators displayed other than "Wipe Data" and "Android" and then the Linux prompts on the upper left of the screen. So it booted normally otherwise. Perhaps I should try it again to see if I missed something.
Yes, my bootloader is definitely locked. When I did the volume down boot up, I saw two icons in the center of the screen.

I tried to flash a custom rom on my eris last night with unsuccessful results.
To begin, my phone had the newest 2.1 OTA update on it and is running HBOOT 1.47. I downloaded and ran the 1-click universal root app. I noticed that a few new apps showed up (Latitute), but the Superuser app did not. I re-ran it several times but it still wouldn't show up.
Getting ahead of myself, I decided that I probably *DID* root the phone and I flashed Kaosfroyo V29 through the recovery menu. As I rebooted, the phone hung at the loading screen. I then tried to flash the Cyanogen mod with the same results.
After looking around, it appeared that the HBOOT 1.47 was exploitable with the 1.5 PB00IMG.zip update. I loaded it to my sd card and booted the phone in quickboot. It recognized the image but did not give me the option to update.
So now I am left with a phone that won't boot and without a backup (I know, I know).
What are my options? Is it still rootable from the recovery menu? Should I take it back to verizon and see if they can reflash/replace it (Doubtful as I probably voided the warranty).

Try installing the engineering Bootloader. Instructions can be found in a sticky called Eris roll-up in the Eris developement section. Even if you can't flash a custom Rom after this you can still flash the official 2.1 ruu which will put your phone back to 100% stock and you can try again.
If your rooted and can still boot to fastboot your not bricked.
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
If the bootloader still appears (power phone on with vol-down+end), your phone is not bricked.
If the recovery boot still appears (power phone on with vol-up+end), your phone is not bricked.
If you don't have a SD card reader on your PC, you can transfer a different ROM to your SD card by booting to recovery and using the USB-MS toggle.
Smart money says that all you failed to do when you installed the ROM was perform a wipe before you flashed the ROM.
Prove this to yourself by installing a conservative ROM such as PlainJane, and when you get it running, for Dog's sake, make an effing Nand backup.

I know for a fact it isn't rooted though (It says S-UP on the Recovery Menu).
Can I actually install alternative bootloaders on an unrooted phone?
Also, I want to avoid flashing the official RUU because it updates the HBOOT to 1.49 which, to my knowledge, has not be exploited yet.
Do either of you know why the PB00img.zip didn't work? I read multiple places that it should work with my HBOOT version.
Also, why didn't the 1-click root work? I haven't done anything like this previously and I bought the phone new at version 1.5.

Do you still have ra recovery? If so simply boot to recovery, wipe data and cache and reflash the rom.
All the 1 click root does is flash the custom recovery, so it did work.
Fyi
The Eris can now be rooted no matter what Bootloader version you have so doing the ruu will not prevent you from rooting. I myself was a leaker and had no problem rooting with the 1.49 s-on Bootloader.
As stated by btfb0, ALWAYS wipe data and cache before flashing a new Rom. ALWAYS do or have a nand backup ready just in case.

If you see the text "S-OFF" at the top of the screen, that is the bootloader, not the recovery boot. The one-click rooting method does not touch the bootloader, so, after successfully using "one-click", you will still have the same bootloader (initially).

You can install the Root PB00IMG.ZIP file onto a 1.46.xxxx or 1.47.xxxx bootloader phone - but you don't need to, because your phone already has a custom recovery installed on it (Amon_RA). As I mentioned previously, you get to that recovery facility by one of two ways:
1) Power phone off. Press and hold Vol-Up and then End/Power; continue to hold both keys down until you see the three skating droids appear (Don't release the keys until you see that screen). A menu system should appear 10 seconds after that happens. It will say "Amon_RA" on the bottom of the screen.
2) Make sure there are no files named PB00IMG.ZIP in the root folder of the SD card; either that or eject the SD card. Power the phone off. Press and hold Vol-Down and then End/Power; continue to hold both keys down until you see the three skating droids appear (Don't release the keys until you see that screen). A menu will appear immediately. One of the items will indicate that if you press "Vol-Up", you will boot into recovery. Press Vol-Up, and wait 10 seconds. You should be at the Amon_RA menu. (At this point, you can re-insert the SD card if you previously ejected it).
If you can't get either of these things to work, report back with exactly what you observe - saying "it didn't work" might be correct, but it isn't very informative.

Not correct. Both the "one-click" and "Dummies" methods (see All Things Root forum over at AF) work for 1.47, 1.49.0000, and 1.49.2000 bootloaders.

The PB00IMG.ZIP files are not compatible with the Amon_RA "update"-style installs; they are signed using an entirely different method. Not compatible. That's why it didn't work when you tried it (using Amon_RA). They are installed by starting up the bootloader with the PB00IMG.ZIP file in the root folder of the SD card. I am recommending that until you understand things a little better, you avoid this method - it only works with certain combinations of bootloaders and PB00IMG.ZIP file versions.

It did work. You indicated in your first post that you used the Amon_RA recovery, which was installed by that method.

Thanks for the detailed responses. I know I should have researched this stuff more before I started toying with it but I'll just have to pay the price.
I wiped and flashed KaosFroyo V29 from the recovery menu and it finally booted. Many thanks for that suggestion.
Hopefully this thread will be helpful for other people in the future.
In the mean time, I lost all my contacts so lesson learned.

Glad you got it working.
If you were using Gmail instead of the HTC mail app for managing your contacts, all your contacts are still "in the cloud" (so long as you did not define them to be "phone only" when you added them).
If they were phone-only contacts, it would have been a simple matter to get your contacts back if you had made an initial Nandroid backup. I'm not saying that to add insult to injury, but rather (as you said) "Hopefully this thread will be helpful for other people in the future."
Backups are a really good thing.
BTW - You will find that Android Forums is a useful adjunct to this forum. The reason is that the ROM devs over here on XDA have their hands full trying to do both development work and interact with the users/testers reporting issues with their ROMs, so they don't spend much time in here (Q&A or General sub-forums). When they do announce a new hack, or patch, or rooting method, the descriptions are many times written tersely (for subject-matter experts, not newbs). There are a number of very helpful folks over on AF, and some good "sticky" posts that are quite a bit more detailed than what you will find here. I'm not ragging on XDA at all; just saying that by nature of the focus required for development work, the experts can't give much personal attention to individual users, even if they want to.

Hi Guys,
I've skimmed around this forum for the last few days and gone through some of the posts regarding getting JB on my TF201 and after a couple of days using it and being really unsatisfied with it I've decided I really want to downgrade back to ICS.
I've searched but the scenarios regarding downgrades don't really seem to match my own circumstances. My device isn't unlocked, was rooted through "DebugfsRoot" and then updated to JB using the guides from the forums.
I've attempted putting "WW_epad-user-9.4.2.28" on the root of my MicroSD card to use the "!" triangle method. JB does recognise this as an attempt to downgrade and warns me approriately about losing everything on the tablet which isn't an issue. The downgrade seems to proceed, Andy whirs away and various progress bars complete. Upon rebooting though there is no change to the device whatsoever and JB is still on there.
I've tried copying the blob from that zip onto the device itself and using Terminal Emulator to force the tablet to downgrade to that on the next reboot. The same process happens and there's no change to the tablet upon rebooting.
Has anyone tried this successfully yet? Or will I perhaps have to attempt unlocking the device to get a new ROM on there? I don't know if I'm overlooking something simple but any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've had the same experience and it's very frustrating. My devices is even unlocked and that doesn't help.
@skaforey
if your device is unlocked you should be able to change the recovery system and then use the new recovery to load any image you want onto the device.
@Lolatron
yeah, I've been reading and trying various things the last few days too, but it seems there is no way to downgrade from JB back to ICS with a locked device.
There are a few things I enjoy on JB (like the fixed IO problems of the dock that make the sdcard slot finally useable), but I'm really missing my root acess that got wiped with JB. I'll probably unlock it if we can't find a way to regain root in the next few weeks.
Root access wasn't an issue for me, even after numerous wipes and resets I've kept that and have carried on as normal.
For me it's sluggishness (after a factory reset) on the launcher, huge frame rate drops on games, my Chrome bookmarks no longer syncing and absolutely horrible touch screen keyboard response. Overall it's a huge step down from the previous update, it's just a poor user experience.

You cant revert back to the ICS bootloader once you have flashed the newer JB bootloader, unless of course you have done your NVFlash backups.

Ok. I have at&t Samsung galaxy note i717. Earlier today I manually updated the software to jelly bean 4.1 and also unlocked it by following a YouTube video. Now. I have downloaded a few things, such as SU, CWM, titanium backup, twrp, and I think that's it. I barely know what any of these things do. I have already deleted all bloatware from my phone. I went to TWRP and I backed up my current settings to my sd card. I guess that's out of the way.
I am asking if anyone can please explain in detail and retard terms, what precautions should I take before I figure out how to flash new roms and kernels, and if i backed up my phone correctly so if I screw up, I can restore my phone.
I need someone to explain to me what process I should take in order to keep my phone safe and secure, how to get a rom for saving battery... Do you need to connect to a computer to do this? Someone please explain to me how to use all of these apps and roms safely! Thank you

My opinion. Dont mess with it. If its battery life you're looking for go to amazon and buy an extended battery.
Flashing roms and kernels without having some sort of idea what you're doing could completely brick(ruin) your phone.

Well, I already rooted my phone. It was pretty easy because I followed the steps correctly. And i don't want to buy a bulky battery, I also want to learn how to customize my phone.
I want to continue to research and learn about it so I don't hard brick my phone. I was hoping someone could at least explain the apps that I have downloaded. What each do. How to back up my phone settings to my sd card. Do I need each app that I downloaded, and when do I need to connect to a computer? When I go online and find a new rom and flash it over with Odin? I just want to know step by step process so I can learn this safely. Thanks

SU is superuser. its for rooted andriods. basically when you try to go into an app that requires root superuser is what will grant that app permission to do what it wants to do.
a rooted android must have su or it wont have root access.
cwm, titanium backup, twrp- The only one of these i use is cwm. clockwork mod is simple. a stock phone has its own recovery. power on while holding up/down vol's and it boots into recovery. cwm is a modded recovery that allows you to do more. you open it the same way as the stock one but from there you can backup your entire phone, -roms and all. the way to put it on your phone is to download the appropraite one for your android version and also download odin. when odins open click pda, find the file, start phone in download mode (vol down and pwr) and click start. now there are a ton of tutorials but thats the gist of it. now after its back up you can try to flash roms, kernels, etc. most of them will be flashed via odin some you will drag onto your sd card and flash them via cwm(the install zip from sd card option).
When it comes to flashing stuff on your phone nothing is 100% safe and a backup isnt always going to fix a problem you may cause. dont flash anything you havent done research on. read the entire forum to see what problems people had and how they fixed them.
Most downloads youll find have step by step instructions, follow them.
Good luck
Sorry for the duplicated post. I just noticed the other one i posted is in the wrong section and this is the one for the AT&T phones so here it is again.
Hi Guys. Today i rooted my phone for the first time (LG Optimus G e970)
Everything went well, then i uninstalled the bloatware from AT&T and a few of the google apps that i do not use like books or music, and on the next reboot i got my phone bricked with the LG loop and "Security Error" message.
I found some great info on these forums on getting the phone in working condition with the help of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2388440
However, before i go ahead and restore the phone's original firmware, i would like to know if there is anyway to recover some of the files. I have some important notes i wish to recover, everything else is on google and the external SD card so im not all lost.
I am able to put the phone in download mode by holding the up and down volume keys and then powering on the phone with the usb cable connected to the PC, but it is not showing as an external disk on the computer. I do have the LG drivers installed tho, the same ones i used to root the phone.
Any ideas?. thanks a lot.
What recovery do you have ? You may be able to mount internal and sd card in recovery and access them on your computer ?

Hi thank for the help.
I have no clue about what recovery i have. I never played with the phone before the rooting and removal of the apps, so i believe it should be the "stock" recovery if you wanna call it like that.

I don't know what guide you followed to get the root. If you followed this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2450258
You should have twrp. Stock recovery may not be able to mount storages for uses on PCs.
Also I haven't seen the post you included , maybe that's an older post. A lot of people use this to recover their "bricked" phones
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230994
I personally have followed this too.
As long as you have download mode you don't have to worry. However you need to read carefully before processing with teenybins because its something that can actually brick your phone if used wrong.

Ok so when i did the rooting i followed that same guide you linked to, but i only did it to the root part. Not the "UNLOCK BOOTLOADER AND INSTALL CUSTOM RECOVERY-"
I just wanted the permissions to remove the apps.
So now with the TeenyBin guide.... will that erase the current settings and information on the phone or is it just an attempt to fix the firmware loop?
will the process attempt to restore the google apps missing?

There are different kind of teenybins. They do different things, one giving you a working recovery and updating RPM/TZ, one restoring your phone to complete factory state. You will have to read it to know what I'm saying here. The one that give you twrp and update your partitions may let your data alone but you will most likely still have the existing bootloop. The gapps missing ? The ones you deleted ? If you use the bin that recovers phones to factory state then you will have all the stock apps again.
Quick update.
I was able to recover the phone and the data in it. :good:
I installed the new boot loader with the teenybin instructions and was able to backup the data partition to an SD card.
Anyway, after that i went for a recovery using the stock firmware and LGNPST and now i lost the boot loader with all the neat options, but got the phone working again, and to my surprise, everything was back there including data and applications,. i dont get it but oh well... im back alive.
Ill backup all the important stuff from now on, and then i will keep messing with the phone again LOL. i learned quite a few things today... ill read more from now on before doing more things.
Thanks for all the help.!!
Good nite
Started with original stock ICS
Unlocked, rooted, and installed CWM-t
Installed CM10.2 - 20131217 and manually flashed boot.img
The rom itself works fine. At first I had no access to the internal or external SD cards. After reseating the the external SD it started working and has ever since. (This puzzeled me because when plugged into my PC the external came up as a usable drive even when it wasn't working on the phone)
Now the internal SD will not mount at all. I went into CWM and tried reformatting and partitioning but the CWM reports that it can't find the internal SD. It did allow me to go through the motions of partitioning but no tangible results came of that. I was almost ready to 'live' with this until I realized that my camera and a few choice apps will not install or work at all without an internal SD.
I've read through a LOT on this site and some posts seem to touch on the subject but I can't formulate a clear path to a solution in my case which is why I'm starting this thread. Apparently I need to do the s-off procedure and then do some other stuff but I was thinking that perhaps there is a solution that will allow to keep things as they are now and just get my internal drive back to normal. If not, I'll go through whatever procedures are recommended.
Thanks in advance.
I have the same problem. Sometime this weekend i will find a solution. Try using a different recovery then CWM.
I’ve been having the same problems – I’m S-Off on Business Sense 4.0.3 – have to remove the external and reboot – sometimes several times. Has been happening for weeks, once it is recognized if I reboot or power off – it is gone again, I know because I lose all my settings, ringtones alarms and such. Have to pull the external and reboot, Yet the computer recognizes it fine. I was thinking it is a hardware issue – has been a real pain, made me consider getting something else, I’m tired of messing with this phone.
I'll be interested in your progress.
I guess to clarify my issue, would it be less of a hassle to go through the S-OFF procedure and perhaps go back to stock (if I can) then stay there? Or is there a way to solve this internal memory problem in my phones current state? If doing an S-OFF procedure and another step fixes the issue, that would be fine too of course. I see many different takes and procedures but I'm unclear as to how to proceed. I don't want to waste time and perhaps do unnecessary steps and procedures and flashes and whatnot which could increase my chances of bricking my only phone.

if you are s-off my downgrade upgrade guide will help fix your errors...s-on users cant do this...what it does is basically restore the whole factory layout...nothing a rom flash or recovery can do...it wont get rid of your s-off status but youll have to re root and install custom recovery

OK. I can dig that. First off, as of today's date, what's the best method to use to S-OFF?: rumrunner or firewater. I happen to have both downloaded. Then, what's that link for your downgrade upgrade guide?

Both should work for the Rezound as they are made by the same devs and are similar in nature. Try Firewater and let us know how it works. It won't hurt anything to try.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509770 make sure to follow each instruction carefully
First of all, I'd like to apologize to all of those folks who looked in this thread and rolled their eyes thinking another idiot didn't search the forums for the answers. I did search but the bottom line is, I didn't search good enough.
My problem is solved. I have the internal storage back because I just happened to look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2619828
I did do the rumrunner to do the S-OFF procedure because the Firewater instructions weren't ELI5 enough for me. Ran perfectly. Flashed LiquidSmooth. It's good. Memory is good. Life is good. Thanks for the help. This thread can die.
