Will we ever get really mass storage ability - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

With the all these roms coming out do you think we will ever get real usb mass storage? I come from the rezound and was nice to be able to use usb on any pc quickly. I'm no Dev but I would assume it would be easier than unlocking the boot loader ha

Are we talking for the external SD Card? Cuz yeah I'd love to have this too.
I hate MTP with a passion. But it's been working "okay-ish" so far for me. It's just so slow.

I have a microsd to usb adapter (it was about $5 from amazon) and I just pop the card out of my phone and copy files. MTP was worst under HC. You could always transfer files via wifi or bluetooth. The only time I've had my note plugged into the PC is when I unlocked the bootloader.

According to these posts the SGS3 utility works on our Note2.

When I plug mine in I get SCH-I605 with both "card" and "phone" and able to access both.

Maybe you should read about usb mass storage and see how it differs from mtp. I can post some links for you but I can't understand it for you.

I forget what the rationale behind MTP was but I don't care. This is #@)*ING a pain in the @ss. It's Google's fault.
My Droid the way it handled USB and file transfer was waaay better.
I wouldn't really have a problem I guess but this Android File Transfer app on my Mac well it worked when I first got my SIII but right after the first stupid Verizon update it broke. Still broken in JB. Oh Verizon, the company you just plain hate.
For now I do what the above poster mentioned with SD card to my mac. It works, and thankfully Sammy gave us external SD Card slot. But it's not as convenient.
I wish Google would just add file transfering back or get Android File Transfer working again on Mac with the most popular phone (in the world?).

It was an attempt at a seamless auto mounting easy access to your phone's data requiring no input from the end user that failed. What really bugs me is that the method used for transferring is 100x slower than the usb mass storage method. The thing I do most is transfer music and MTP makes me want to poke my eyes out.

Hardware hack to add sdcard support?

I wonder if anyone's looked in to this? Could be huge - most of us have a dead simcard slot - I wonder if there's a way to hack in an sdcard reader to the hardware?
What dead MicroSD card slot?
Do you mean the slot that has the serial # info and has nothing to do with ab SD card?

He said dead sim card slot, not dead MicroSD card slot. The OP clearly realises the slot has nothing to do with an SD card. Seems you have misunderstood or not bothered to read it properly but nevertheless im sure the pretty much redundant piece of plastic with the serial info is something that I'm sure a lot of TP users would be prepared to sacrifice if they could mod in a card reader.
If you're going to hack anything then hack the USB port to work as a host and read away!

Yes, I misunderstood... my apologies.
I've wondered if it would be possible to solder in a wire from a +5v somewhere to the USB. (I'm sure someone will quickly point out if this is a "bad" idea...)

you would probably need to create 5v first. the touchpad I think runs off something like 3v. while I seems like a good idea to hack in a card reader,my feeling is not to.worry until you in out of memory. a better idea might be a device stuck to the back containing a extra battery and a card.reader. It would make the tablet thicker but increase battery life and provide plenty of storageas well as providing the power needed for the reader.

This would also be awesome. I think it would take a bit more for this though than an sdcard since the sdcard can operate up to 3.7v.

Well that's not near what the OP was talking about. An SD card that give you build in storage, even on the go, is much more practical than this option.
Still could be useful, but for me it not very practical.

I don't have a problem...
1. I didn't see where he asked about it... my apologies there.
2. Just pointing out the limited usefulness compared to the SD card solution.
I wasn't trying to be a jerk.
Personally I think the best solution would have been if HP would of just included an SD or MicroSD card. It drive me nuts when manufacturers mimic the apple model and give you less option and features as if that will equal success (looking at you Touchpad and GalaxyTab 10.1).
Um... Looks like the subject is just about buried in the amount of crap everyone has been piling on so far.
So back to constructive discussion... What are the advantages of having SD card in your mobile device (be it a phone or a tablet)?
I have a 16GB microSD card in my Nexus One, and I have never taken it out. I almost wish all of the flash was just integrated.
With quality of USB and network file transfer protocols I think SD is just about useless.

Very simple, I can put all my photos, videos, documents, downloads, Maps for my GPS apps on my SD card. It leaves more space on my device for apps and if and when I wipe my device I don't lose any of it. I've had time when I was having an issue with a device and had to wipe everything. Having certain files on my SDcard kept me from loosing anything. with my phone I've stored different ROM on my SDcard so I could test them out and switch between various ROM with ease.
I don't take my SDcard out either, the purpose of the SDcard isn't to move files from you computer to you phone but rather as storage.
But, I'll give you $10 for that useless 16GB microSD card.

Technically a TouchPad without hardware damage is unbrickable, USB is connected to CPU so you could always push a boot image to RAM.
You do bring up a valid issue, but some of the ways you can stop relying on local storage are cloud storage and cloud backups. These Palm accounts that we get with WebOS on the TouchPads do just that.
Which brings us to the next question, can we have an application to access our Palm accounts from Android?

But I like local storage. I rather have my music on my SD card. There are some picture I'd also like to have on my device locally. Same with documents and a variety of other thing. I don't have to have everything on there, but there are something I would like to have. Not to mention that being a WiFi device I can't always have access to cloud storage.
There is room for both in my opinion.
OK, I'm done... back to you regularly scheduled thread.
ive been curious about this since i got mine, but i have a 32gb, so its never really been a project in the front of my mind...imma take a look at the whitesheets and teardowns (cuz i dont wanna open mine if SD isnt possible ) and see if there are even pins for data available, but im pretty sure there isnt, which would also explain why devs are working on getting OTG running

Ethical way to use USB mode.

On my previous Galaxy S whenever I connect my phone I got a small icon near clock which indicates mass storage device is connected, however on S3 I don't see any indication of device connected. When I go to my computer I see S3 as media device when I go in it I can browse external and internal memory but my question is that how to remove S3 safely from computer when file transfer is done? I don't see any UN-mount option either.
ANYONE?
Yeah mass storage is gone, and you can just unplug the device after the text "synchronize" disappear from the phone ..no need to unmount etc

of course, just make sure that you don't pull it out when the file transfer is still going on, as that might corrupt the disk, and need formatting
The S3 is an inanimate object and has no feelings so I'd say it's 100% "ethical" to pull the plug on it without killing it or hurting its feelings.

[Q] Samsung Note 2

So hello, I would like to ask a few questions about Note 2.
1. I have GT-N7000, what is the difference between this one and just Note 2?
2. How can I upgrade my android? Right now I have 4.0.4, which came by default.

There is a HUGE difference between the 2 devices. Obviously the original Note, the one you have, is running on ICS, while the Note 2 has 4.1 Jellybean. Note 2 has significantly better hardware as well. Quad core and 2 GB of RAM, as opposed to Dual core and 1 GB RAM. Also, Note 1 has PenTile Matrix, while Note 2 has RGB Matrix. Note 2 is also 0.2" bigger. There are a bunch of other differences such as SPen improvements and different Touchwiz UIs, so I wont continue. The official update is coming, according to GSMarena, so just wait. That or root your device and flash a custom ROM on it. Search on Google or XDA on how to do so. If you want more info on Note 2, here it is: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_ii_n7100-4854.php
PS. Instead of asking this, you could have found your answers on Youtube and Google.

umm. tb is terabyte. That would not be possible to fit on a smartphone. I think you mean mb? Even 30 gb of stuff is a bit of a stretch. And what do you mean that you're trying to add to your phone? Music? When I add files, such as roms, kernels, music, photos, etc, I just open Computer, and find the removable disk and then drag and drop into the sd card. Dunno why you're using Kies... Anyway, Im not exactly sure what you're trying to say here.

i just recently got a Nexus 6, i have had HTC and LG in the past and both of them recognized it automatically. but if you download ES File Explorer for free off of the PlayStore. insert your OTG device and open up ES, in the top left hand corner you will see the 3 lines for the drop down menu, click it and open up the section called "local" and you will see where it says USB3002 (at least thats what mine says) and click it and you will be able to see/transfer your files. when you are done go back there and hit the eject button right next to the USB button and then remove your device.

Allows use of a USB stick. I use a Meenova micro USB with a 64gb card. Came with a nice silicon case that attaches to my key ring.
Yup that did it! Thanks so much my friend!
Thanks griff22usmc. Downloaded stickmount previously and although it now recognized the OTG I still couldn't access the files. All is good now though. Might get that Meenova for the wife. Thanks again bud.

This is what I use, storage and both plugs built in. The only issue I am having is finding a proper file manager to use. I really dont like ES file explorer , and most of the others. I may be overly picky but most seem to not let you see thumbnails or play videos unless you transfer the file over to your phone in the first place
I too got the Sony micro otg, and couldn't use it with either the Sony app or with Stick Mount. I'm replacing it with this:

When I tried ES Explorer, it seen the USB right away. Seems other file mangers will not unless you use something to mount it (And I tried MANY of them). After making my own thread about something similar, I needed to get StickMount, and started using Solid Explorer, and everything works peachy.

It did work, and quite well too. I'm running CM12 and have stick mount installed. In ES File Explorer, you can't open the device directly, instead use the path provided by stick mount. /sdcard/usbStorage/sda1
It is much smaller than I thought it might be. Very pleased with it.

Works great! I'm running CM12 and stick mount. In ES File Explorer it has a way to directly access the USB device, but that wasn't working well for me. Instead, use the path provided by stick mount. ( /sdcard/usbStorage/sda1) I can create folders, copy files, etc without issue. I copied my TB and TWRP backups off the phone to the otg storage to free up quite a few GB of space.
It is a fair bit smaller than I imagined it would be too! (Which I'm very happy about.) I took a picture to give you a good idea of it's size.
Enjoy!
oops, sorry for the double replies. I closed the XDA app on my device mid-reply and thought it didn't post.
I have been using the Meenova for my Nexus 5 & 6 for the past year or so. I have the older style, not the new one with the rubber guard over it. It has always worked great, and it's inexpensive.

Tried to upgrade to marshmallow on a old 5.1 AOKP

And apparently I cannot
transfer apps to sd card
still have phone come up as mtp when connected through USB?
Are these issues across the board for different distributions? This is a HUGE no no for me. WTF android. Will this go away with 7.0?
