Xperia U skype problems - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Bought an Xperia U american version for my gf. its not rooted, bootloader still locked. fresh out the box on 2.3.7 and i installed Skype on it. she's having problems making and recieving calls. she cant even call the skype echo test contact. always says call failed. same if i call her. she can recieve IMs on skype but when she tries to send one, it stays on "Pending"
anyone having this kind of problem? should i try to update to ICS? or could it be a problem with her internet connection? cause she has less than a 1mbps connection. anyone have advice?

Try Internet with 3g and other carriers. If it works then it's the problem of the sim. Try the sim in your phone to see if the problem is in the phone.

If none work then wait for some more time and then take it to the shop where you bought it or give it to the service centre.

any reason you would suggest it being the sim? as the problem has been over wifi

I've also tried Viber and it refuses to even establish a connection on the xperia u. Should try updating the os?

Don't update the os.
The new updates are very laggy and buggy. Give it to the service centre or the shop where you bought it from.
