Welcome to the Xperia Club Hope you like your new phone
Anyway, Here's FlashTool.. It includes Fastboot in the new versions so not needed
There are several kernels to try out, Munjeni's and GekTheBoss's for a sample.. You'll see them at the top of the Xperia U Development Thread. I think its simpler than me linking to it
Same goes for recovery (Personally recommend CWM Touch Recovery for Locked Bootloader )
Edit: Forgot about the Unlocking part :Check this out, seems simple enough : Unlock Bootloader for Xperia U
Cheers

Can I directly update from 6.0.B GB TO 6.1.B.1.54 ICS?
Sent from my ST25i using xda app-developers app
Yeah.. Just flash the FTF and it'll be fine Just make sure you use the right Baseband,ie, depeniding on ST25i or ST25a
I recommend 6.1.1.C.1.0 Its the smoothest of the 3 and although nearly same as B.1.54, tethering is broken in the latter ! In case you run ST25a phone, select the option to "Exclude Baseband" if you flash C.1.0.. Same thing with ST25i and B.1.54
Custom Roms can be installed as usual using CWM, custom kernels with Unlocked bl.etc etc

Mine is ST25i...depending on the baseband didnt understand that part

There are 2 spectrums of 3G which differ by country. the B.1.54 version is from a country which uses the GSM spectrum of ST25a. Hence, the baseband of that rom should be avoided otherwise, you wont get 3G Connectivity there, Similary, c.1.0 uses ST25i's supported baseband and hence, ignore baseband if you're using ST25a...
For you, either Flash C.1.0 directly or instead, flash B.1.54 with "Exclude Baseband" selected

Glad to help buddy I just started out myself 2 weeks back Feel free to Message me if you got any doubts Ill try to help if I can
Are you sure that .54 is for st25a? On this forum you can find ftf from Spain and it works fine on my st25i. I didn't exclude anything when I flashed my phone.
There was b.10 that was from Australia and it was for st25a.
Hm.. There must be multiple ftfs floating around.. The ones I have (which i think are the most common, not sure) were like that.. But I might be mistaken.. Just to be safe, when you open Flashtool, you'll see the correct f/w designated If Flashtool says its for st25i or st25a and you have the opposite device, Ignore Baseband Probably the more correct approach to it anyway Thx for pointing out my mistake
Cheers!
Wow, look at this place. This forum is a hell of a lot nicer than the Atrix section, which is filled with cynics. I just ordered this phone to replace my broken Atrix (unfixable corrupted partitions/broken wear leveller) mainly due to official ICS (which Atrix doesn't even have, lol) and the price. Currently reading through these forums so i can flash easier when it arrives. I know of FlashTool (helped a friend flash his Xperia Ray or something) and it's a very nice package.
Now done with everything flashed 1.54 and flashed brains ROM...suggest some best roms guy's

Most of the roms I have found in XDA forumn are for MT11i. I would like someone to confirm that MT11i roms can be flashed for MT11a devices which use 850mhz baseband for its 3g, where MT11i use 900mhz baseband for its 3g. Someone please help me out. Thank you.
I would think that if you tick exclude baseband there should be no problems ;-)
If it were me I would make sure I had an original Rom to hand first and then just try it, flash the one you want to try, including baseband if you have network issues flash the baseband for the original ftf

May I ask if anyone can advise me where to download the ftf file for the MT11a ICS rom? As I have flashed the ICS for MT11i on my phone already, it operates without problem. However, now I'm not in my own country, so I can't test whether the 3g network will work without issues.

Mt11i and mt11a are the same device just different 3g bands, you can flash mt11i firmware to mt11a and it will continue working on 3g 850, only that it will show as mt11i in device info. I have an mt15a working perfectly with mt15i firmware. It is always a good idea to have a backup of your original firmware.

I would try with your existing baseband to begin with, only flashing mt11i if you have problems

rooting which i have to do after flashing the firmware of mt11i with baseband excluded then follow proceedure . so with using a custom rom like xperia pureness which requires a baseband of .72 what do i do ? trying to get feedback from developer of rom but no such luck.

I think KeiranFTW was planning to do a cwm recovery bootable through a stock kernel and a locked boot loader. Bug him
if i get the european ftf for ICS and root on my Locked BL Xperia U, I can try to use the already existing CWM for Xperia U, and make it work more or less the same way it works on 2.1Stock X8, by changing one file that is loaded on the boot, to add an instruction for the keypress and the recovery .tar file... i can try, but maybe no success... just waiting to get my hands on ICS

Man, you can already get ICS for your device, like i did. Get FTF from st25a from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916419
Flash it via flashtool and tick "exclude Baseband".
You'll get an european version, like i did.
The use Bin4ry script to root it (it works, i've tested it).

My phone has poor reception since I used the Indian ICS ftf, I live on the other side of the world and wondered was there a slight compatibility issue.

It is a tool to install firmwares on Sony Xperia Devices.

First select the .ftf you want to flash in flashtool. It will start preparing the files. After 10-15 sec,it will ask you to connect your phone in flashmode.

With unlocked bootloader, you can flash custom kernels. These make your phone fast and smooth and can increase battery life.
You can always root your phone with unlocked bootllader.
And the BIGGEST pros of unlocked bootloader is you can flash "Jelly Bean" which is almost fully functional and stable for daily use.

I don't know.I have unlocked bootloader and now I can root any fw without any hassle. You should unlock it too.
You just have to flash custom kernel which has autoroot and you will be rooted.

I HAVE A PROBLEM WHEN TRYINT TO ROOT IT SAYS IM IN MTP MODE, and i dont know how to disable that seems like its by defautl
Just look in this section for an gbrocks and flash it it stock modified gb rom and work great and its also prerooted.
P.S. wrong section pal, it should be in Q/A section, and in future just use search button on this forum coz its been answerd a lot of times

First of all wrong section, you may put in the Q & A section,
Secondly there is no rating for custom kernels/ROMs, every development is best in its own unique way !
Use search for rooting methods

You may require unlocked boot loader for rooting GB
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Sony_Xperia_U
Look at that page !

THANKS I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY ROOTED AND UNLOCKED MY PHONE
now im trying to install CWM but on that page it shows only CWM for ICS
im running ANDROIDN 2.3.7
i tried it and when i turn off phone i rapidly prass vol down and shows the blue green blue light but then it goes back to sony logo and starts normally
Now as you have unlocked your boot loader you can flash custom kernels, most of them have pre installed CWM.
Check for GB ROMs in the development forum.
Or CM9 ROMs are pretty smooth and simple, you may flash stock ICS (ftf file) and flash a CM9 ROM.
