I want a messaging app which shows previously used numbers in the send to list as soon as start typing first few numbers. Currently it only shows saved contacts not the unsaved numbers I sent the message earlier. I hope I'm making sense. This feature was available in htc android phones. It's quite important for me to have this feature.
Thanks in advance.
I think handcent can do the job. Download it from the market

i have tried handcent sms and go sms pro. none of them work. i think its a feature of ROM as handcent and go sms pro both worked the way i want in htc evo 3d.

I finally got around to uninstalling the stock messaging app and I noticed I wasn't getting MMS messages anymore even with Handcent installed. I wasn't even getting the text that came with the pic. After reinstalling the stock app the MMS messages worked again. Oh yeah, and this only prevented receiving MMS, not sending. Is this true for everyone or just me? lol
Its not a huge deal that I have to leave the stock messaging app installed but its redundant and takes up space.
I uninstalled mms.apk with no problems
I'm pretty sure the only third party text app that works well without stock is gosms pro.
Might want to talk with the miui developers they have mms working ob the evo4g. I was also having that trouble with aosp roms.

I was thinking of uninstalling the stock texting app as I use GO SMS Pro. You can actually input the settings into GO SMS, just rip them out of the stock app.
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to test Go SMS Pro. How does it compare to Handcent?

ChompSMS works well
I've settled on Handcent for now, but I've been wondering what some of you guys are using. I've tried a couple others, but Handcent just seems fluid and is constantly updated and supported. Lots of themes and tools to utilize, if that's your thing.
Also, in addition to what SMS app you're using, is there an SMS app that will allow "reply to all" natively? I get group texts from iPhone users and when I reply it only goes to the person that sent the message to me.

I've been using Handcent since I moved to Android(always had dumb phones before)roughly three years ago. I like the set up,customizations and how smooth it operates. I also like that the app has strong support, although I'm sure that they all do.
Am I the only one who likes stock apps? Such as stock sms+keyboard? Sheesh. :x

Since I started with Swiftkey for a keyboard app, I NEVER could go back to stock on any phone (or tablet) - It ruined me for anything less!
And there are some stock SMS apps I like and have used. In fact I like the one on the OG and I seriously considered sticking with it, but I switched to Handscent for purely vanity reasons. I like to put a "signature" on my texts and the stock SMS won't let me do that. I do use the stock e-mail app, however!
+1 for SMS Popup. Also the Cyanogenmod version of the stock keyboard since it has a dark theme. Haven't tried it on the LGOG yet because I haven't gotten mine, but I imagine it will work.
Well, since the stock app has a reply to all feature, I'm just running that now. Handcent had some cool stuff, but all these group texts are killing me.
I can't believe Handcent doesn't have reply to all at this point.

I've used Swiftkey and Hancent before and I've always switched back to Stock.
Well, I used them on my Inspire 4g. But I ran other ROMs so I guess the keyboards were never exactly "stock"...
Meh! I can do without. The LGOG's stock is nice, for my preference anyway.
Am I the only one using go SMS pro? Lol.

And you're 100% positive that handcent is not Chinese or otherwise related to anything Asian? I don't see anywhere on their site stating that they're local, or European. And what proof do you have that they steal your info and sells them?
I don't find go SMS a resource hog at all actually so I don't know about that either.

Many third party SMS app comes with added features that aren't available on stock apps. For me, go SMS pro has two features that I don't see in other SMS apps yet, unless they're addons, and those are inter grated lock screen for the app itself and a private chest to store all your texts that u don't want ppl to see. It has screen popup notifications too so uh don't have to constantly access your SMS app to read or reply texts but I think handcent has the same feature.

I like Handcent for some of the features to customize and privacy aspects. Different backgrounds to choose from and privacy inbox to off load or keep texts in through their storage.
The stock is okay, but unless I've missed something it's fairly limited and bland as far as options.
I use go pro sms...haha....it works pretty well too!

I also use Go SMS. It's the only one I tried that allows me to use group messaging properly.

I always used the stock SMS app, never felt comfortable with anything else. I like the simplicity. Swiftkey keyboard plus the stock app= perfect minimalistic experience.
I use the stock sms and then either Swype or Swiftkey flow.
Sent from my UNLOCKED LG-E970 using xda premium
I'd live to use the stock app if only it has security integration. Just cuz the phone is locked doesn't mean ppl can't get into your phone and then read the text messages. Its an added layer of security.
Another advantage of go SMS pro (not sure if handcent has a similar feature) is that if u never delete your text messages and have literally thousands n thousands of text messages within a single contact, go SMS truncates the chain of conversations to the latest ones n if u scroll up, u can click show more messages to view older ones. This speeds up loading time when going into a conversation. Whereas in the stock app, it can take sometimes 5 or more seconds of delay since its trying to load all the old texts.
For example, my conversation with my gf has never been deleted lately, resulting in nearly 10,000 texts between the both of us. When I open our conversation in go SMS pro, it works fine. But using the stock app can take nearly 10-15 seconds n it sometimes even crash and freeze. So yeah, it can make a difference.

Give Textra a go in the play store.
The devs are awesome and have been making a lot of messaging apps since the first jailbreak iphone. I used their bitesms app and recently tried chompsms, they just released Textra and I am really liking it so far.
I used text+. So far so good

Hey, so my wife received the update to 4.2. She's complaining about the messaging app not showing unread threads and taking forever to send since it won't let her send another until that one is sent. Is there any fix? Or is it possible to use the sense 4 messaging app? Not rooted.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
There is a slight lag with sending texts, hopefully they fix that...don't see another way...I'm stock as well.
Try clearing cache and data of the messaging app or get a 3rd party messaging app.

I would use GoSMS if it would send pictures properly. It sends links to pictures. Always hated that.

Make sure with gosms that you're sending it as an mms and not a goshare message. If it's an mms the pictures send fine. If it's goshare it sends a link unless the recipient has gosms as well.
I personally use Google Hangouts since my phone is stock. It works pretty good for me.
I second Google Hangouts. It's a great SMS app since the update a while back. Much nicer than stock in my opinion.
Hi,
I'm trying to switch my SMS app on my GS4 from what came with my phone to hangouts. Currently when I send an emoji through the built in sms app it is sent as MMS instead of sms (it switchs as soon as i type an emoji) which is fine with me. But then I go to start using hangouts for SMS and I type an emoji and the recipient gets nothing. Please help. I would like to switch.

I'm not sure why it does it but for some reason in certain versions of sms apps with Samsung phones it defaults to mms instead. I know there is an xposed app which changes default long messages back to sms vs mms. I use hangouts as well but it doesn't give me that issue. Then again I'm on an S3
Edit: have you changed the default messaging app to hangouts inside settings within hangouts?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Yes I have tried changing the default app within in hangouts. And the sending via MMS doesn't bother me. If it could fix it I'll send them through MMS inside hangouts if there were a way.

Try using the S5 SecMms_blue.apk.. It allows you to send emoji's through sms.. Just find your carriers or if your international based use theirs..
Just find it somewhere and install as a regular app. I'm not rooted nor plan on rooting.

Umm.. yea then you will not be able to accomplish what you want.. I know thats some Messaging apps use wifi to send pics, but the other person needs to have the same app..
Yeah def check out the xposed module. I think this is ridiculous. I know in the newest version of hangouts in the bottom left hand corner you can click and change back and forth between the two but if you add emoji it might not give you that option. It does me, but I'm running a rooted Moto Droid Mini.
