making my phone new again - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all and merry Christmas everyone,
After having flashed a hundred at least roms, I realized that my phone is kind of mess. I need to get back to where i started. How can I make it as new and clear as it was? Thanks

Do a factory reset, wipe cache & dalvik and finally install a Samsung official rom.

There are plenty of topics that discuss stock roms, where to get them and how to flash them, just take a quick glance of Q&A section of use search.

ROM manager not showing many ROMS

Hi all,
As the title says really it only shows 16 roms and i'm not sure they're all roms.
cheers
Don't use ROM Manager with SGS2, it's not compatible.

It works for me, i've successfully flashed to cyanogenmod.
What do you suggest?

You got lucky. It's known to brick devices and bootloop them. Its up to you though if you use it or not.
As far as recommending you a rom, I would say root box, but just know posting a 'what is the best____" is against the rules, just for future reference.

Sorry mate, didn't mean what's the best I just meant what app would you use instead, or would you just flash the old fashioned way?

I would just do it the old fashioned way. You have less of a chance to mess up (if you have any idea what you're doing)

Never use Rom manager. The safest way is the old fashioned, Cwm way!

The way I would do it is to D/L the ROM from XDA put it on the root of my SD card, boot in to recovery mode, back up the current rom, clear cache, clear dalvik cache, wipe data, find the rom and install, reboot.
Sound ok?

[Q] Factory reset?

Hey guys. Simple question here. I am selling my sg2 and was wondering how to wipe all my data from it. I am running AOKP but no longer have the .zip or access to any, as there is no internet here.
Thanks

Enter into recovery (CWM or TWRP etc.) and wipe data/cache/dalvik-cache.
It would make the phone factory reset.
Something to keep in mind is that the factory reset will restore to stock AOKP, not whatever came with the phone when you purchased it

[Q] Kies firmware update , should I wipe ?

Hey there guys ,
I've recently updated my sgs3 to 4.1.2 via Kies.
Im having a* HUGE *battery drain , wich makes me think about wiping the device .
So do I have to after updating ?
Thank you . And a happy new year
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Yes, after OTA update you should wipe your phone.
I had the same problem.
I updated to Jellybean via OTA and battery lasted for a few hours only (Barely a day)
I did the wipe, and batter was working better, lasted for like 2 days
And If you do the update over the odin?
Do you have to wipe in that case?
All upate is almost 1,2 gb.

Generally after any base update you should do a full wipe this will cause less errors in the long run, so to answer your question Yes full wipe

Flash a new ROM. Try Jelly beer or the CM10.1 preview in the Dev section.
Problem fixed.

I installed CM 10.1 Unofficial and still the same problem, i unlock go and touch an app and it takes for ever to load (10 sec). I will try the other rom and let you know.
Thank you for helping!
I did this same thing. I did an unroot, and re rooted. that did the trick for me!
unrooted using this http://stockroms.net/file/GalaxyNote/SGH-i717/ICS/I717UCLF6_I717ATTLF6_ATT.zip
and then re-root with your favorite recovery.

huh, crazysause. I wouldn't have thought to check the root, but then again most of the problems i've heard that come from rooting is breaking the phone.
Yeah, usually huge lag happens when you flash a modem that the ROM doesn't like, or you flash a mod that changes your framework, like the 15- toggles mods, or 4-way reboot menu mod, if the bases aren't the same.

That's understandable, and I'd expect that from flashing a rom or radio just not when rooting. Guess I'm just lucky that hasn't happened to me

Yeah, I really don't understand how changing root permissions cause lag, unless the incorrect kernel was flashed. That would at best cause lag, at worst cause brick.

What modem (baseband)?
I flashed a Canadian modem as an experiment, and my phone became unusable.

I'm not sure, sorry. I installed rogers stock ( on telus... wow i know) but i want to solve this problem which burns my technological soul.
in comparison to my s3 this phone is much laggier no matter which rom I've run, I've just learned to live with that.

have you tried going back to 100% bone stock and seeing if the lag presists?

Even if you flash a stock ROM , unless its a complete update package, you don't change the modem.
Look at settings about phone baseband.

when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. If you've eliminated everything with the software and firmware, the only thing left is hardware.

awesome thanks. And say i want to install slim bean (4.2.2) will i need a specific kernel (after i installed recovery of course) or juts full wipe and flash?

You will need to read and learn before you act. This phone is configured differently than what you are accustomed to, judging from your statement above. You won't install recovery separately on this phone, since it is built into the kernel, for instance. Most roms have flashing instructions in the OP.
Ok. Im rooted... I unlcoked it for Tmobile. and its now on 2.3.4. When i go to recovery it juts says android recovery. Im not sure if its Clockwork mod, because i havent used clockwork since the days of the Moto backflip. SO how would i go about getting Clockworkmod and then installing Slimbean.

The clear answer has already been given to you. Search for username creepyncrawly, read all the threads linked in his signature. You need to be patient, read and research for several days before attempting to flash anything. It was reckless and foolish to root before doing so.
