I wanna buy the Lumia 920 but I can't use it on AT&T just yet, so I can't buy theirs since it is locked. Where can I buy one unlocked for that price? (Less than $500) or a locked one that I can unlock.
New to this, so...bear with me please.

Less than $500 for an unlocked, unsubsidized phone? Nowhere, at least not for a year or two until the 920 is old news.
You'll have to import one out of the US to get one that is unlocked, and you'll have to pay a pretty penny for the privilege of having it, as no one is selling it for under $500 as far as I've seen. As long as the phone is an AT&T exclusive, its gonna be difficult to get theirs unlock, but they will eventually do it, or someone will eventually figure out the unlock codes.

Seems Expansys wants to charge the earth for the Nokia 800. Nokia themselves stated that the phone would sell for around €420.00. I certainly will not pay Expansys £494.00 for it.

deffo not you can get it on buymobilephones for 18 months at £25 so total = £450 even if you dont want the contract its a better price but you could always use the mins etc plus its like paying on intrest free credit.
But I want to buy an unbranded and ulocked device; I hate being carrier tagged!! If you know where I can get one at realistic price (not Expansys!!) let me know.
That's cool though I should point out there is zero branding on my lumps not even a splash so would only need to be sum unlocked. I will let you know if I find any at a good price.

If you buy from places like buymobilephones, mobiles.co.uk, carphonewarehose, phones4u you do get a unbranded and unlocked device. I think phones 4 u are selling for 399 sim free.

Hey everyone! Much thanks to xda forums for help finally getting my Lumia 900 unlocked! Now I want a 920, but do not want the headache or hassle of dealing with AT&T again. Any recommendations on where to buy unbranded Nokia Lumia 920's?

I asked negrielectronics if the Lumia 920 they have in pre-order are unbranded but I did not get any answer.

Any reason why these unlocked phones are fetching a $200 - $350 premium over AT&T no-contract unlock price at 3rd party sites? Could we expect price to drop once AT&T starts to sell?

Probably because AT&T off contract does not mean unlocked.

I think because the non-commitment $449 at-t price still *requires* you to sign up for a data plan and it won't be unlocked. Look at the fine print on their website when you select the device.
Does anyone know if is there anyway to buy an unlocked lumia 920 here in Canada?
Cheers

Expansys.ca offers several unlocked Lumia 920's at various prices. I am trying to determine if there will be any problems if I order the AT&T unlocked version.

Apparently the initial batch were in fact unlocked. However that may have been an oversight? The Rogers 920 "launch" was today, and new phones could be locked. In any event, when they did have an unlocked 920 in Calgary here they wouldn't sell it to me without signing up to a plan

I've been in 3 strores. There is no Lumia 920 model yet, and they said that will be locked only for Rogers.

I have a contact in Expansys. I've sent an email asking the availability here.
I could buy one locked from Rogers (they said that will receive the shipments tomorrow), and try to get an unlock code.
With Lumia 900, was easy to unlock Rogers lumia phones. Maybe the 920 will follow the same path.

Let me know how that works out. I didn't think Rogers was selling them without a monthly plan. I've emailed expansys as well...
A guy said that $599 for a phone off contract plus 50 for unlock and then tax.

You might as well sign up for a monthly plan and then cancel the next day. The typical difference between a hardware purchase vs month to month purchase is $50 (h/w purchase costs more). Sign up for the cheapest plan ($27) and you'll still be ahead.

As a rule of thumb assume that the people in the store have no idea what they're talking about.
When the initial batch was released I went looking for one in the Rogers store; the woman in the store repeatedly told me it was locked and reports to the contrary were incorrect.

Don't think there is an unlock code available for the AT&T 920 as yet, is there?
The other option is to pick up one from Clove in the UK. About $630 for the unlocked white version. Add shipping, GST/PST/HST and brokerage to that and you are probably looking at close to the $750 mark.

Expansys only sells unlocked phones. Also, Negri has the AT&T 920 up for pre-order as well. Of course, MMS and tethering could be a problem with an unlocked AT&T device on someone else's network. Grrrr I really wish Nokia had a clue. Great phone but it is almost as if they are deliberately trying to anger early adopters and enthusiasts, especially here in Canada.

Wow! Expansys Canada is asking $800 for an unlocked, white 920. As for Negri, all of the AT&T will be locked and presumably will be difficult to get unlock codes for a few months. The only option is Rogers (and hope it's unlocked) or Clove (and pay the premium price).

So Expansys is selling the AT&T phones locked for $654.99? Are you sure. What would be the point? The more I think about this the more I am starting to despise Nokia...

I'll try to buy one from Rogers and test a kodoo sim card. Working, I'll keep, if not I'll return.

If you end up doing that, try to also do a manual network scan and see if Wind shows up.
Wow, I'm feeling really lucky now. I bought mine from Rogers unlocked. The kicker was that someone bought it before me and then returned it. So I was able to buy it without a contract and also for 50% off. So that's $300 for an unlocked Rogers phone then brought it to Telus who currently have a deal going on where if you bring in an unlocked phone they give you $100 credit. So, all in all, the phone had cost me $200. SCORE! Chances are... I'm probably going to get coal for Christmas, now. lol

Is the device from the early batch?
I live in Brazil, and a relative of mine is going to the US and I'm eager to get this phone.
I wonder if i can get it off Contract and Unlocked, or just simply off contract since i believe Unlocking it won't take long.
And i'm wondering if it will go for U$500 or close to it.
599 USD off contract but i dont know if is unlocked
I am in same situation.
On Verizon site is clear like cristal, 599 USD off contract
But i dont know if is unlocked too...and for me that is a real ****, cause i dont know how to unlock the beast so i need an answer, like u 2!
I am in the same situation, 'cause I'm italian...but I really, really want this phone, is absolutely amazing!

they should, i have bought many a phone from them in store and just told the sales rep to leave it boxed i will activate it at home. did have one try to tell me that they had to activate it before it could leave the store, so i just told them it was a gift. (which that one actually was)
Yes , looks like it is GSM unlocked , but dont forget those phones were all pre release models & the actual ones that come out on 21st may not have GSM Unlocked. I hope it is unlocked though
Only time will tell !
I have never purchased a phone from AT&T without a contract so I am not sure if I will be able to just walk into AT&T with the phone and ask them to unlock the phone for oversea use. Other than the bloatware they put on I was thinking the free Media Link HD feels like a better deal than buying directly form HTC (I missed the free case promo...)
At the very least, you'll have a return period to get it unlocked. If they don't, you'll be able to return and then order the dev edition.
Sent from my LG-E970 using Tapatalk 2
Last time I tried, it depended on whether or not my 2 year agreement was up, not on how I bought the phone.
Some folks on XDA have reported being able to get SIM unlocked by paying full retail, but I don't think its a set policy, and don't assume it will be a sure thing. It probably has more to do with how long you've been a customer, and if you have multiple lines.
AT&T reserves the right to withhold the SIM unlock code for a period of 10 months after a phone's release, regardless of how you purchased it. They sometimes make exceptions to this. But this is what the policy is.
