A touch on the disappointed side after getting no response to my other thread I'd like to ask some questions.
My newly acquired sgs2 is running 2.3.4 and, like many here I'd like to try some custom roms.
Am I right in thinking I need to flash a stock ics or jb through odin or heimdall?
My current pc runs linux and I've been having trouble with getting the right package as each one throws up an error mostly alone the lines of 'firmware.xml does not exist' from heimdall.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a heimdall compiled package as all the ones I've found give an error.
OR
Can anyone provide me with a pc-less way of rooting and flashing from 2.3.4 to some custom rom or something.
I've tried searching here and google but can't find what I need.

You may well have been disappointed to not get a response to your previous thread, however, you should have bumped that thread rather than make a new one.
I'm not sure why you'd think you'd be more likely to get a response to another thread with the exact same query ? (It is Xmas after all, a lot less people passing through here). Besides, very few people use Heimdall. That's why you didn't get a response (And why you won't get an answer from me; I simply don't know because I've never used it like 95% of people here).

You haven't searched thoroughly enough if you couldn't find same.
Thanks. Didn't really occur that xmas caused the lack of response. my bad.
On the other notes. The only pc-less root method I've found is for ics not gb.
Also, I had already tried bumping the other thread but got no reply at all. That's why i decided to start a new one with a more accurate description of my requirements.
I'll happily put it down to people not being experienced with heimdall.
Thanks for the pointers.

If my memory serves me correctly, I could have sworn there was an Odin-less exploit that worked on GB <2.3.5 (forget the details; never used it myself).
OK. Now that you've got this thread up & running and the previous one has gone to heaven, I suggest you bump this one maybe 2-3 times a week until you get a response (daily would probably be overkill). Eventually someone who uses Heimdall will read it. Or you could find a Windoze PC & use Odin & do the job in a few minutes.
Or...(I just had a lightbulb moment as I was about to hit 'submit')...What about trying to run Odin under Wine ? It might be a bit risky given if Odin crashes halfway thru the flash you could easily bork your phone permanently. But if you don't get a response to this thread re: Heimdall and you can't get access to a Windoze machine, and you're really desperate to do it......
Ok. I'll keep hunting for that exploit.
Just so wean exhaust all possible options. I tried using wine and virtual box back in the day with sgs1 with no success
May work now 2 years down the line.
Ill leave this now till after the festivities.
Thanks again.

Is there anyone who can help me on this.
At my parents for a few days so will probably flash with odin to ics. Is there anything other info i need other than flash Rom under pda with reparation unticked and no pit file? I read somewhere that after flashing it will hang on sgs2 boot logo and you have to enter recovery, full wipe and reboot to get to the rom.
Btw I'll probably go for a 4.0.3 based stock rom and root at a later date if needed.
Cheers

If you cant use ODIN on your pc then try Mobile Odin instead.
yeap, root you device (it's a piece of cake in GB), download mobile odin and you are good to go.
you might wanna read some stuff about flashing, you really don't wanna flash a wrong ROM.
In that case can you direct me to a none pc root method for gb? I've hunted all over the place without success
Does mobile odin work in the same way that you have to select the file and whatever repart/reboot options you want.

I am running on EA28 firmware. all the threads tell about DL09. any difference?
Not to be an ass or anything, but if you can't figure out how to root the phone, find a stickied thread, or what needs done to flash ROMs, than you should stay away from 2.2 until you can. Odds are, you'll end up flashing something you shouldn't and it will be harder to get back to a working phone. Read through the threads and stickies first and gain an understanding of how to accomplish whatever it is you want to do.

I was able to root while on EA28, but make sure you read the "Note to Stock Users" at the bottom of the first post on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913470
If you are new to rooting or new to rooting this phone, you really need to read the instructions carefully (no skimming!) a few times before starting. It took me about three hours to root and install DL30 the night I got my phone (including time I goofed things up).
Good luck!

Try UN installing the Samsung drivers...reboot PC...re install Samsung drivers..possibly reboot PC again, enter download mode, fire up Odin and just wait...if you get a #com in the little yellow box, flash away..sometimes just removing and re adding the drivers will work..you can also try a different windows os, or Odin 1.83, or 1.7..just some suggestions.

Alright, so I had attempted to root my new AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH - i777 and succeeded, but had flashed an incorrect kernel so my phone is acting very strange. I can still use the phone and everything, but it will not let me get into download mode so that I can use ODIN to fix my phone completely with no errors. Then, I was thinking if I tried using this option in SuperSU which allowed me to unroot my phone, then maybe it'd fix the phone itself and correct the kernel. So now, I am stuck with an unrooted phone and cannot root it again because I cannot access download mode. I do have CWM, but I also ran into problems with that not being able to flash ANYTHING off my SD Card. Could someone please give some tips or tricks I could use to fix this?
p.s. I read somewhere about something relating to a jig? I am still relatively new to all of this so I don't know how I'd go with doing that without proper instruction.

How would I flash a different kernel? I can't do it through odin and I'm pretty sure CWM won't flash kernels. Plus, I'm not rooted anymore. So I'm not sure how I'd pull that one off.

Yeah because I ran into mobile odin after I found away to remove the root, hoping it would fix my phone. But that's where I kind of messed myself up. Would a jig be the only solution? Or is there another possible way? Could I do something through CWM?
EDIT: I cannot access CWM in any way since I am no longer rooted. I really screwed myself.
I understand that you are a little inexperienced, and I mean no disrespect, but what you are describing makes little or no sense. First do you have a Galaxy S2 I777? Next, what exactly are you doing to try to get into download mode? Next, how are you trying to access clockworkmod? Please be specific, and I hope you can get back to the conversation fairly soon, because I need to go to bed pretty soon. If not, I'll be here in the morning.

Well first off, to get into download mode I tried holding down both Vol. Up + Down and then plugging in the USB (with ODIN already up and running). Also, the phone was completely off when I do this. No matter how many times I try, which has been at least 30 times, it never works. also, I cannot acces CWM since I am no longer rooted, because I saw an option in an app called SuperSU that unroots your phone, but I had assumed that it would fix my problem. Apparently not.
No need to repeat yourself.
I've never heard of an I777 phone still able to boot and not able to enter download mode using the method you describe, unless somehow a secondary bootloader from another phone, say the I9100, got flashed onto it. Is there any possibility that the SuperSU flashed bootloader? Was that flashed in Odin? More details please.

Sorry, I should've made that part a bit clear. Yes, I am pretty sure I originally made a mistake of flashing the i9100 instead of i777. I went too fast into the process thinking I would know what to do, since I managed to root and install custom ROMs onto my old HTC Inspire 4G and my girlfriend's HTC Evo 4G. I realized HTC and Samsung are completely different, any phone at that, and I should be cautious from now on. And yes, I haven't seen a case like mine. My phone works fully functionally, I just cannot access download mode and since I am not rooted anymore, no longer have access to CWM. By the way, Im trying to get back to you as quick as possible so I can at least get a start by tonight before I myself goes to bed as well. ;P
OK. Looked up SuperSU app by chainfire. chainfire is a developer in the I9100 section. I don't see anything on his OP for the app that says it can be run on the I777. Didn't read in depth though. Need to take some time to study it to see exactly what it does. But on first look, it seems it could be involved in your problem.
Your phone can be recovered, but we have to know exactly what has happened to it in order to correct things.
Can you get into recovery mode using three buttons? vol+ vol- and Pwr.

Damn, I had sworn it said i777, because ever since I originally tried fixing all of this, I look out for i777 or not just to make sure I'm fooling with the right apps or kernels. And no, recovery mode won't work. Holding those buttons turns my phone off, with and without the USB cable plugged in. If I do it while the phone is off, it just boots up normally.
OK. You almost certainly have I9100 secondary bootloader, which governs button combination for download mode and recovery mode. I'm not sure if you can duplicate the I-9100 button combo on the I777, since in includes the hard home button which we don't have. You could maybe google it and see what you can find.
The other way to get into download mode that will work is a usb jig. Do you own one? If not, you can buy or make one. Buying one may delay fixing your phone by a few days. If you are handy, there are instructions for making a jig available by googling. Some links in one of my guides, too.

No, now that you say you flashed I9100 firmware, it probably means that SuperSU wasn't the problem. Doesn't matter now anyway. Just need to get your phone into download mode and flash back the full I777UCKH7 package including bootloaders that you can download from the Download Repository (link in my signature).

Alright, thanks for all the extra info. It really helped. My problem may not be fixed, but I even assumed I would need a jig. I guess I'll just order one online. Afterall, my phone still works. It is just bugged in an awkward way and I'd really love to root it, so I don't mind waiting a few days to get it going. Also, any recommendations on ROMs/kernels that I could maybe look into after all these problems are solved? Anyways, Thanks for everything!
EDIT: Also, whenever I get the jig, should I flash the bootloader or the stock kernel first? And another question, after this mess is fixed, is it okay to use a ICS ROM with a Gingerbread kernel and vice versa? Or should I find some guide about that? Lastly, I looked at the kernel that you were using out of curiosity and was wondering if TouchWiz or AOSP is better overall?.. I apologize for the explosion of questions, just so curious about all of this and want to know as much as I can.

I see you've already recovered the phone. I suggested that you flash the stock I777UCKH7 full distribution, which is under the heading I777UCKH7-CL503881 Stock Binaries in the Download Repository. That contains the bootloaders and everything else all in one package. I was then going to suggest that you follow my guide How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash counter!! to root and install your custom rom.
For your other questions: You must have a Gingerbread kernel with Gingerbread and an ICS kernel with ICS. As far as what to flash onto your phone, that is a personal decision, and rom comparison threads get closed in this forum, and pretty much throughout xda. I like the rom I am currently using. It is an I9100 base modified for the I777 and uses the Apex launcher (not touchwiz). It comes with CherryPicker kernel, but even though I havn't changed my signature, I recently flashed Siyah kernel so that I can double boot AOKP and my regular rom. AOSP/AOKP roms are much closer to a straight Android experience. I'm just now trying it out for the first time. You just have to put something on your phone and try it out to see if you like it. If not, try something else.

All,
I am a noob. I admit it. I have checked the threads and the Q&A but haven't been able to decipher a workable answer to my problem, so please forgive me if I'm repeating a past problem.
I successfully rooted my i777 (ICS) phone using Heimdall and my Mac terminal following steps found at galaxys2root.com. I downloaded ClockworkMod Manager and tried to back up my current, stock MOD before attempting to flash a different one. That's when the phone never came out of the backup. I can still get into download mode and have tried flashing the file originally used to root, but to no avail. I have tried taking the battery out, still will not boot up. Is there a way to flash a new ROM with Heimdall? And if so (not knowing exactly how to use Heimdall) how to do that? As a noob, I understand that there will be eyerolling at this post, but I could really use some help to recover my phone.
Thank you.

There are guides on THIS forum.
Follow creepy's guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081 and reflash the stock ROM. That should get you to the point where you can do what you want. And NEVER follow any guides at galaxys2root.com - we have more people coming here after f***ing up their phones using the instructions on that site.

I got it fixed flashing a new kernel. I appreciate the help. And will steer clear of that website from now on.

So I tried to root my Note 2 today. I had rooted it once before using Casual this past summer, but due to circumstances i had to get a new one.The replacement came in today, and i tried to root it with the same methods. I believe my mistake was using Casual while i had 4.3 installed on my device. I'm not TERRIBLY android savvy, but i knew enough to know that if i ****ed up i should stop while i'm ahead and ask you guys.
tl;dr
Long story short, while using Casual to root my Note 2 with 4.3 on it, i got this message
ERROR: Failed to confirm end of file transfer sequence!ERROR: recovery upload failed!ERROR: Failed to send end session packet!waiting for device
waited for a good 30 minutes, nothing was changing, turned off phone and now it's bricked, looping at the "Samsung Galaxy Note 2" Splash screen.
I believe i have to use Odin for something but i could really use some help and reassurance before i continue.
Needless to say i will be jamming f5 on my thread until everything is resolved!
Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: Since i posted this, i tried to flash a stock firmware on Odin (4.1.2 i believe) and it failed halfway through the procedure. with nothing more to be done, i reset my phone, and where before it was just bootlooping, it now shows me an entirely different screen reading "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
Since then i have tried a different firmware file, still 4.1.2, Odin get's to the very end of the procedure, and crashes at what i assume is the reboot portion. Desperately need assistance!
You can't flash anything other than 4.3 if you have the 4.3 bootloader.

OH. That makes a lot of sense....
I will try to flash a 4.3 firmware right now. Will i need some sort of .pit file or something to fix the initial bootloop? Or is that problem just totally blown out of the water at this point?

I cant seem to find the file anywhere. Only on terafile via SamMobile, but the download link doesn't seem to work.
What are my options as far as this bootloader go?
Did you look in the general section at the unbricker thread?

I did a bunch of searches on the site as i was f****ing my phone up, systematically. Im really sorry if this thread doesn't go here, i just didn't know who else to ask
YES!
Found the proper 4.3 file, flashed it via Odin. Everything is stock and ready. If anybody wishes to help me root it from here or point me in the right direction that'd be great but other than that, thanks for letting me post here and thanks to those who helped me out!

Currently the only way to root your OTA 4.3 Note 2 is to use saferoot, read this thread carefully

I found myself in the same situation. Where might I find the PIT file? I can't reboot the phone to get the PIT file because it's soft bricked like mzaric's phone was. I'm using Mac OS X so I'm having to use JOdin3 to flash the stock 4.3 firmware back, but without the PIT file I can't continue and I've searched endlessly to find the PIT file. Also a somewhat related question, I heard JOdin isn't good for flashing big files, but I have no alternative, is the stock firmware which is 1.1gb too big to flash?
EDIT: I sadly didn't search hard enough thank you droidstyle for the guide. But my next question is I'm unsure of what version the phone is because when I originally tried to do the CASUAL unlock I believe it was on 4.1.2, but I think it softbricked to begin with because it was 4.3. Should I just try doing the 4.1.2 and if it doesn't take, retry with the 4.3?
If you flashed n7100 firmware you are screwed. If not just Odin back to stock. You were on 4.1.2 if you were unlocked using casual. Don't go to 4.3
