Straighttalk on Vibrant!! Diff b/w Straighttalk Tmobile sim & AT&T sim? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am thinking of switching to Straightalk $45 unlimited everything plan for my Vibrant (unlocked and rooted). I am wondering if anyone here is using Straightalk on Vibrant. I hear people talking about
‘Straight talk Tmobile sim’ and
‘Straighttalk AT&T sim’.
This might be a dumb questions but What is the difference between the two? Do I have to request a ‘Straight talk Tmobile sim’ in order for it to work with my Vibrant. Will I get 3G speeds and not edge? I also hear that MMS don’t work but I m not too concerned with those since I don’t use many.
I would love to hear from any straighttalk users on Vibrant!!
Thanks

Straight talk is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator). They use different carriers. You need to specify which carrier sim you need per your device in order to get 3g data speeds.

So I need to tell them I need Tmobile compatible sim for me to get 3g on my vibrant?

You can get either t-mobile or at&t sim. They both will get 3g on vibrant. Vibrant has att 3g combatiable bands. Go with the compant that provides better coverage in your area.

Thanks. Its good to know that Vibrant gets 3g on either ST ATT & ST Tmobile sim.

I would double check that AT&T is using bands for 3g service that are compatible with vibrant. I know that the AT&T captivate doesnt work on T-Mobile 3g service.

(Q) US Tethering on a Bell Atrix?

Alright..I'm running an unlocked Bell Atrix on the Telus network..and was recently down in San Diego where I purchased a Tmobile SIM card for use while I was down there (and so I could Hotspot and have the wife boost off my wifi for her phone).
When I attempted to do this however I got a notice that I had to enable this thru my AT&T provider. Obviously it was a Tmobile sim card using tmobiles APN..so I'm not sure why it was prompting me to contact AT&T. Does anyone know a way I can get around this for the next time I'm down in the US? I'll be going to Hawaii in Sept and really want to be able to tether so all my Canadian companions can boost off me..
you'd only get 2G off t-mobile
maybe try getting an ATT sim card?
rebellus run their 3G off the same 850/1900 frequency as ATT
regardless, t-mobile's data apn probably didn't get added. try adding them next time.

I had data..and I'm not sure if it was 3g or 2g but it was quick enough that I didn't notice any difference. The problem is at&t doesn't sell prepaid sims with data..that's why I went with tmobile. I had the apn's configured appropriately otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get any data..which I was. I just wasn't able to tether..

[Q] A question about AT&T / T-Mobile 4G

Hi, I'm in California and I have an Motorola Atrix with AT&T and I just unlocked my phone because I'm about to switch to T-mobile...
However, my friend told me that AT&T and T-Mobile has different 4G networks. He said the AT&T Atrix can not use 3G or 4G speed on a T-Mobile network, It can only go up to Edge speed.... Is that true? Does anyone know about this?
Hope some people can help me here ...
Thank you

From everything I have read that is correct, but also know that it won't be much longer till you are back as an AT&T customer since they are acquiring T-Mobile.

Its true. While both AT&T and T-Mobile use HSPA+ for their "4G" speeds, they run on different bands. If you want 3G/4G, use a T-Mobile phone. Otherwise, enjoy EDGE. Opera Mini with images set to low will be a big help.
T-Mobile leases cellular space from AT&T which is why unlocked AT&T phones can use T-Mobile service. Not sure if it is the phone's software issue that is causing the 4G/3Gnot working. It's possible that T-mobile implemented their so called 4G first but it's still AT&T equipment.....I work for AT&T. Also 4G, is just higher speed 3G, 4G LTE won't be rolling out until next year.
Thank you for the quick reply... I need to get a T-Mobile phone then.

Yep, but sucks that they still charge minutes when I call a T-Mobile number. I'm switching it for my girlfriend, so I can get Unlimited mobile to mobile minutes... I might get a sensation when I switch to T-Mobile

Good job on the misinformation front.
And also not being helpful, I'm going to assume your in sales and don't actually know anything.
Now on to the OP's question.
T-Mobile uses the same type of technology as AT&T however they operate on different bands. As such most devices that are sold on AT&T will be able work on T-Mobile for phone and edge but don't get 3g or hspa+ due to the radio in the device only supporting some of the bands. Which is why as a general rule AT&T phones such as the iphone, will work on T-Mobile if unlocked but can't use 3g because it doesn't have the ability to operate in the correct MHZ range. Its the same going from T-Mobile to AT&T. My HD2 was awesome, other then the slow data. *Not that my atrix or inspire are much better.
There are exceptions to the rule though. You'll have to check to see which bands the Atrix is capable of using. I know some of the Samsung devices had all the GSM bands so they worked fine on all networks.
the answer is NO the atrix will not work on tmobile USA 3G or 4G network. there, done!

Problem is that if/when the AT&T/T-mobile merger goes through, AT&T will likely flip Tmobile's 3g towers to 4g. All tmobile 3G phones...sorry no more 3g unless you buy a new phone. yay....
linky
AT&T said Monday that it planned to convert T-Mobile's 3G towers to 4G service and move T-Mobile 3G subscribers to AT&T 3G phones.

They won't just flip a switch and everyone has to buy new phones. They will be phased out as people finish contracts and begin new ones. If they don't, they'll be buying T-Mobile customers all new phones or paying fatcat lawyers to defend them from all the lawsuits.

Agreed, sorry I used the term 'flip', never meant to say it would happen instantly . The article I linked stated the switch would take several years. That's not written in stone though, AT&T could move up the timeline if they are losing too many customers to Verizon and Sprint.
This is only an issue if you plan on keeping your tmobile 3g phone for YEARS, which is not likely for anyone that frequents xda .

[Q] Can unlocked AT&T S2 on simple mobile SOMEHOW get 3g or 4g on T-mo or att??

Question??? Is There ANY WAY Possible to get a unlocked and rooted samsung galaxy S2 on AT&T using simple mobile sim to pick up 3g or 4g? I know that you get edge speed because of the way the phone is set to AT&T, but there has to be some work around. I mean is it possible to hack it someway so that you can use AT&T towers for data service and have access to their towers while still having you r simple mobile sim in the phone. This edge is killing me. I tried flashing a t-mo modem only to be let down when I flashed it and loaded it and it said please insert sim. I heard something about dialing on the phone and switching bands wondering if that was maybe a method?
Edit:forgive me for being a newbie found my answer. Thanks xda members

This was just asked yesterday!
And no, there is no simple workaround, its a hardware limitation. The phone is not equipped to see T-Mo's frequencies.

AT&T and smaller operators running on AT&T like Straighttalk work perfectly. T-Mobile and smaller operators running off them will work, but you'll only get Edge data. Verizon and Sprint, and any operators running off their networks are CDMA and wont work at all.

[Q] Rooted. Edge only. Special case here

Long story short, I rooted using the Exynos Abuse and flashed the SuperNexus I777 ROM and am only getting EDGE.
My friend gave me his ATT Galaxy S2 SGH-1777. I have a local carrier that also uses GSM. So I have a non-ATT SIM card.
When I plugged in the SIM card to this ATT SGS2, only the texting and dialing worked. I didn't get any data. I talked to ATT for an unlock code (which they gave me). It wasn't until after I got the unlock code that I found out the phone was already GSM unlocked.
So I proceeded to root and flash the ROM I listed above. I am only getting EDGE data. Wifi works and as far as I know (with the minimal poking around) everything else does so far.
Am I missing something in terms of toggle switches inside the settings menu to turn on EDGE? Is this carrier specific? I don't see why EDGE would work but 3G wouldn't if I am in the coverage area.
I am doing this for a friend. I am a HTC Thunderbolt user so the SGS2 is new to me. What are these modems people are flashing? Should I flash one of these in hopes of picking up a 3G signal through the Non-ATT carrier?

The carrier is Cincinnati Bell. Is it possible to get the phone to pick up towers specific for Bell or do I need the carrier to do this?

I'm pretty sure Cincinnati Bell uses T-Mobile towers so all the limitations that T-Mobile had with At&t phones on its network applies here

If the phone is GSM unlocked, should it be able to access the respective tower of the carrier that is tied to the SIM card?
If not can the radios (?) specifically select towers?

Not if the phone doesn't have the hardware to support those specific bands.

Yes. Your phone is GSM unlocked; therefore it can access the Cincinnati Bell towers. However, since those are actually T-Mobile towers, you can only use T-Mobile bands. Since T-Mobile and AT&T used different bands for 3G, and the phone's radio is designed to use AT&T's bands, you can only access the 2G bands.

some of the newer tablets have both bands built in....so then you could use both gsm bands on tmo and att.....like the new note 8....it will have more gsm and lte bands than those in the past

Sorry for bringing this up again, I was looking at the specs of the SGH-I777 (ATT's SGS2) vs SGH-T989 (T-Mobile's SGS2). It looks like both of the phones use the same bands except T-Mobile is capable of one more: WCDMA 2100. Is this the band that T-Mobile transmits it's 3G over? Otherwise they look almost identical.
Attached screenshot of comparison: http://imgur.com/8OQXftD
T-Mobile utilizes AWS (1700 MHz) band. Look better and you'll see that what you marked isn't a difference, 1700 is.
