Some people like alternatives to using Google maps for a couple of reasons. One reason is some people don't like the user interface or don't find it intuitive for them it may seem weird but I have heard several people say this about Google maps and navigation. Also while Google maps and navigation has a lot of great features there are some features in the other apps that people need. For example my friend loves to go wilderness exploring so he uses an app called BackCountry Navigator for the detailed typography maps and the ability to use these features even without a data connection. I personally prefer using Google maps and navigation but can see why people use other apps.

Im still pretty new to the smartphone world. But after looking at various apps I noticed the app declares a list of permissions it will need to certain files on the phone. Im just concerned that any one of these apps are gathering sensitive information like our contacts or notes on our phones. How do we know exactly what is being accessed and sent out. I just realized an app like mixzing sends the developers information about the songs we listen to, our playlists, etc.. Now Im not too concerned about this in particular, but how do we know what other information they or any other developer are grabbing from our phones? On a PC you atleast have a firewall, router, security sofware, etc..
Its interesting that someone finally asked this question. I asked this very thing since i.had my G1.
I am in infomation security and as a security researcher, ive used a rooted device and the shark app which is like wireshark for packet captures from your phone. You could always stick your vibrant on your wireless network and watch the packets there as well.
Take a peek at this screengrab from an alt keyboard install from the sticky page. I would not trust any app at all
On a side note, if you saw the forensics app for these phones...wow

there have been apps said to collect sensitive data that it doesnt need to function... In russia there was also a tip calculator that sent sms messages to various numbers without your knowledge... at the moment there is no virus, or worm, or trojan for android atleast not on this side of the world...
Just be careful what you download, always read the apps permissions..
Or download a app that scans applications, I personally use Lookout. Not because im paranoid about viruses but there are other features implemented such as losnig your phone and includes tracking.
It's on the market, "Lookout."
Lookout is a great tool to have. I use it on all my phones, out scan every app as you install, if its bad, it'll tell you

SO how man y, if any, bad apps have you encountered? I havnt bought into the whole AV for mobile phones yet. I understand the potential risk, but the real world risk seems minimal to nearly nonexistant at this moment. Now I will probably be one of the first ones to go palm to face when the first virus makes its way around and I get it, but for now i'll stick with the ignorance is bliss unless this lookout app is actually kicking back potential risks.

It's 0.. I use it mainly incase I lose my phone. That's the thing about Lookout, it isn't intrusive at all. It runs weekly scans (disabled if you want), and scans when you install a new application.
It has a lot of other functionality other than scanning for malicious applications.
I want to know how to make device as from -for example- US to get extra features for applications, such as Shazam LyricPlay (its only working devices from US, and few other countries).
I have a Nexus 7 tablet too, and I use a custom rom which has US market inside, so I can read books etc whenever I am, and I can use shazam LyricPlay too in my tablet. I want to know hot to achieve same thing for my SGSIII because shazam lyricplay is a cool feature. I have tried market enabler kind applications, fake location applications which didn't work.
So please if anyone knows, it will be apreciated.
Thanks.
I'm also interested.Anyone know how to do this?

CSC and build prop changes i guess .
But most likely an app on Play or even in Themes and Apps
I noticed that Google latitude is no longer on the Play store. What other good tracking apps do you recommend?
I just need to know where my teenager is for his own safety. We both have Andriod based phones.
Isn't latitude a part of Google maps app? I think you should open maps, tap on the top left and you'll get the latitude option there

So it's official. My friends and family use this almost daily. What are our alternatives?

After reading all comments and requests about this on G+, maybe somebody will be interested in our small app MapTrack. NO registration on third-party servers is needed to manage or share tracks. User shares his track by direct link to people he wants, and manage his tracks in Google Docs. The user has full control of his own data and people follow him in usual browser. Each point of the track has time , location and some other useful info. The app also has an option to record offline tracks. Perfect to stay in touch with your family in real time and your followers don't need G+ or any special app - just internet browser. Give it a try or contact us with any questions:

So I'm a bit of a paranoid guy, and I like to use security extensions in my browser to keep companies from spying on me, such as Ghostly and Adblock Plus. I'm also concerned about AT&T tracking my browsing history and so on.
What are some good security apps for Android? I found Adblock Plus but I can't seem to find anything like Disconnect + and so on, the kind of stuff they have listed here http://donttrack.us/

you would probably be better served w/ adaway since it blocks via hosts. you'll need to be rooted, of course.
and if you're serious about privacy, read up about tor.

I've tinkered with Orbot before, but how well does it keep the connection to the other nodes when you switch between GSM and WiFi?
Naked Browser seems secure enough browser as it demands.
Well then... now that android is a major contender in the mobile OS wars. Had the G1 from day one.
My only complaint from android... is the quality of apps. Also, repeat of the same apps over and over again in the play store. Recently I've been scouring the market place and I noticed that there are a lot of apps that seem kinda... a waste... For example... just how many weather apps and widgets do you need? most of the time they copy HTC, Samsung, or Sony apps (weather, clock, calendar etc) and slap on a generic name onto it.
Now Im all for "oh android is OPEN" but at least put some effort on making an app
this raises the question... should android have a tighter quality control over apps? Im not saying to make android "closed" but anyone that wants to submit an App on the play store needs to follow guidelines so there isn't repeats of apps that makes android fragmented. I mean there's 700,000 apps on the play store right now but prlly only a few 100 are only worth using because of how polished they are.
What do you guys thing? does Google need have tighter control of the play store?
I agree with you. I think holo ui on apps is the best thing ever happened to android. Apps started to look high quality and developers did great job with holo. But there are still tons of non-holo apps that hasn't been updated since 2009/2010 and most of them not even work on new devices they just give force closes. I think Google should give those developers 2 month to update their apps with their guideline and otherwise just delete it. I started get sick of these old apps.
The other thing bothering me is the themes. Go themes, adw themes, launcher pro themes, they are everywhere. I hate to see all those themes when I simply search "launcher" on play store. Most of them are not even compatible with the latest versions of their launcher. I hope Google will do something about it.
Google started letting Android turn into new Windows. Every manufacturer can put bloatware in it. Millions of useless programs in the Internet. Most of them aren't updated since XP. Most of the people choose Linux or Mac(I still like windows more than mac ) over windows just because of the bloatware. Think about the toolbars of ie . Google should manage apps better in play store. Otherwise Android will start killing itself.

No, Android is an open platform and things like this may discourage developers. Google will feature apps that are designed well, but banning apps because they are deemed outdated looking or not useful is not what I want to see.
I do agree there is a lot of junk in Google Play but there is also the same junk in the iTunes app store. I would like to see Google allow more advanced searching in Google Play, they are Google afterall. Google Play's search should add sort by date app updated, filter by compatible Android version, and I'm sure there are more. That way you could find newer and better apps in your search.

so your saying that google should just let those junk apps stay in the play store. sure ios has junk apps but it isnt as bad as android.
yea discourage the developers that makes junk apps. thats the point. if a developer is constantly putting out updates then it shouldn't worry about having its apps being deleted. im just saying that google needs remove crappy apps from the play store. it just makes google play look lazy

your right about some of the themes... some of those themes are copying other manufacturer's skins
look at beautiful widgets... they copied htc sense clocks. im suprised that htc didnt take them down.

There isn't thousands of outdated launcher themes and not working apps in the app store. The ones at app store still work on newer iphones and don't look outdated. But the ones at play store look stretched and outdated.
i agree with you
I believe one thing that would help is better search functionality in the play store. Seams to me that a major search engine would have better search options in their store.
