[Q] Lost HomeCatcher. Stuck on B&N launcher. No access to anything. - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I rooted my wife's nook a year ago and she has been using it daily with the GO Launcher, if I remember correctly. A couple days ago she backed out of something and ended up on the B&N stock launcher. The N button does nothing, I can't access any of the apps unless a notification pops up about the app, I can then open that app by clicking on the notification, otherwise I have no access to apps or settings.
I would like to safely wipe and revert the nook back to factory settings then re root from that point. I don't need to save any data, just get back to factory nook.
How do I do this?
Thank you.

If indeed it is all right to completly wipe it, use the "repart.img". It will get you back to 1.4.0, You can then put 1.4.3 back before you root if you want to run stock. Google to find the image and instructions. It's fully automatic, but you need to know that when the green check mark appears it's safe to take out the sd-card ad reboot.
I think there is a key press combination you can try first if you prefer that. "Think" being the operative word here... It could be something like power, volume up and "n" at the same time while booting... Could be... Give it a go!
Edit: I just thought of something even simpler. if you're not on 1.4.3... Maybe... Try just downloading the firmware update from BN and drop it in the root and then maybe it will update itself and by doing so also break root. If you're already on 1.4.3 it won't work, and maybe not at all, but I would at least give it a go!

Thank you for the reply. I will search that first option you mentioned.
My goal is not to end up with the B&N launcher, just to start from scratch and go from there. I am not up to date with what people are doing with the Nook, but I want as close to an Android experience from it as I can get.

nook tablet registering

Hi! i think i bricked my NT. I applied the root, after reverting the tablet back to 1.4.0. installed market and amanzon appstore. i did the same to my son's as well. anyway, noticed i couldnt get access to my nook books, downloaded the nook app off of market, it wouldnt open. did a restore and now the tablet wont get past the registering screen and an error msg. pops up stating "B-binder failure"...Help!!!!
That's not a brick, try going through the reverting to 1.4.0 steps again or do the 8x reboot to restore technique mentioned in other threads
"Brick" means "this device does not turn on at all no matter what I do" i.e. hardware failure.
oops! that's why i am a noob!
i tried rebooting with the acclaim update. No-go!
That's ok. Anyway, the easiest thing to do is a factory reset (go to dev forum; should be a few posts in there, and the SD card revert to 1.40 method also does this I think - else it's 8 x hold power+N button on). Then proceed to register, turn off wifi after registering, root, apply the OTA blocking (titanium backup/ or another backup program -> restore the modified device manager). Not sure what went wrong with your original attempt
That modified device manager will block updates without killing any of the B&N store functionality, your nook books etc.
The restore you did was a "soft' restore - not an "erase the memory and write the factory image" hard restore (8x hold power+N does this, as does a few other methods in the dev subforum, as mentioned above). So don't worry, it's all fixable.
The nook app does not work on NTs, in the android store, oddly. Hah
Hi! thanks for posting. the issue is we cant get by the registration screen. b-bind failure.
ok... so i did the hard reset thing....9 times (for luck)....and it worked...thanks so much everyone!
now the question to root or not to root?!?! if i do......can i keep the books and the crappy apps....and still get market, etc?????
sorry, you gotta be simple dummy with this old broad!

Everything works correctly with root. It just adds functionality to your nook, you don't lose anything.
If you have a Mac the process is super simple, I don't know about Linux or windows.
I will recommend AltDrawer if you keep the stock launcher. It is an app drawer for ROMs without one like nook.

You don't want to bypass registration currently. You can make some fake info I guess if you want? Or a separate/new acct with B&N? The battery life takes a big hit if you bypass registration (you can test it - there are ways to get by it I think, check dev forum, but keep an eye out for a halved battery life). Yeah the hard reset method is sort of a pain; 2-3 times would be enough you'd think. There is an SD card method in the dev forum that does a hard reset for you in one go, without the 8x+ repetition (for future reference, if that's easier). Anyway, glad it worked!
it did work! and I was able to get my who-used-to-be-a-computer-geek son to redo his while i was talking to him over the phone.
ok...so my question is...when you are installing nook&zergy, there is a screen where it gives you 6 options...i pressed "6" to remove all the "stock" software, only because it seemed the other options didnt work. Anyway, which do I push to keep it "like the good ole days (i.e. before the1.4.1 update), where I can have the reader function and the enhanced apps function??
thank you all for your info.

[Q] Nook tablet will Not Fully Unroot

I was able to successfully root my nook tablet. Though wished to try a different root program. I tried to uninstall the root normally but found my internet browser was disabled on my nook tablet. As well as my library setting I performed the factory reset to try to fix the problem but I am unable to completely restore my nook tablet. I am unable to download the unrooting program over the internet because the browser and search is disabled.
Is there any way that I may be able to fix my nook with an SD card?
I would also like to know if I can enable usb-debugging other than using the browser on my nook since the browser has been disabled.
Make a wipe erase/deregister your device and use the magic card method by AdamOutler to restore stock, that will put your NT like out-of-the-box.
Sent from XDA using one of my Android Toys
Do you know if there is any packetuninstaller program for the sd card that I can use to unroot my nook tablet?
I would like to reinstall the market once I fix my browser and library issue not having access to either on my tablet kinda sucks http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
erase/deregister does not remove the android market or the ota block. After resetting device I still have do not have it as an out-of-the-box nook tablet. The browser is still non functional and the library will not work. The only way I can access the internet browser is by clicking on forgot password via the netflix app.
Any other methods do unroot and fully reset device???
Use the convert to 1.4.0 SD option. There is plenty on the boards, you just have to search for the answer. Check out the Noob thread too.
I have now parsed root file used on my nook tablet to allow full access of google launcher and apps. I have rooted access to browser now. Sd card options have not succeded in doing anything but reboot device to 1.4.0 which it is currently on. With removal of root or functionality of the library, shop, or normal search. I would like to regain the functionality of these functions or fully restore my device. I have read through the forums an have not yet reached a solution.
I was wondering if its possible to achieve stock functionality? I am new to the nook tablet. Though I have rooted and unrooted other devices without problems just trying to find a simple restore method that works. All help is greatly appreciated
Sounds like your NT internal files may be corrupt. It's the reason why I'm recommending you root via SD versus internal memory back to 1.4.0. Then run Indirect's unroot app and then try to reinstall Indirect's image. I had to do so because my NT wouldn't charge while on...computers (no matter the size of them or maker) can act quirky and it sometimes takes a couple of reinstalls to get it working the way it should be....nature of the beast.

Heres how I restore my NookTablet to the way it was when I got it (no root/mods)
1. Erase and Deregister
2. Turn off Nook once the erasing is complete
3. Copy acclaim_update.zip to the root of a microsd
4. Turn the nook on, which will start the downgrade/Factory Reset
5. Done, now the Nook is 100% root free.
This method removes all root traces/apps. Then I re-root (which will not work if the NT is already rooted). I'm new to Android in general but I have been an iOS user for 4 years. This is the same as doing a DFU restore.
Ok Let me list what I have tried.. After failed root.
1. Erased/Deregistered device
After boot-up no browser no library no shop
All functions are blocked OS after Erase 1.4.0
2. Erase/Deregister then installed acclaim_update.zip to the root of an sd card
This did nothing....
device is still on 1.4.0 with no browser or normal settings.
3. Reset via Power home button reset worked.
Device rebooted but still all settings the same I believe somehow
OTA block has not been removed. As should have been.
There is still block on factory browser search and library functions.
4. Tried to re-root and sideload super user app unable to fully install root.
Error root is not installed on device software version is still 1.4.0
5. Erase/Deregister again! Let boot normally Searched again through Xda Website for more information on this matter still unable to revert to factory.
I wonder if there is a way to force to 1.4.1. to fully break root functions and revert back to factory and reinstall new root file. I would like to get back unblocked functions of nook library and browser.
Also as a side note the nook seems to be perma downgraded. By some sort of block even after erase/deregister I need to remove whatever is blocking this so I can revert to stock and reinstall the new root.

I'm a noob but I'm pretty sure
Erase/Deregister = clears the /app folder for market and nook store apps and any user files (not system)
Acclaim.zip= completely clears the device. Including the /System/app folder (where the browser resides). And when that's done it recopies the original apps. Which is why if you debloat the NT, a acclaim update/restore restores the files. I can confirm this worked for me since I debloated once and this restored the deleted apps
So unless you didn't do all the steps you must have messed up a critical file that controls the restore process. But I don't think that's possible with current rooting tools.
NOOK TABLET? Unrooted?
I sucessfully backdated my nook tablet to software version, 1.4 and rooted device- however after putting on software version 1.4, I was unable to register device. I skipped the registration video and rooted no problem... wasn't happy with the rooted nook tablet like I was with my rooted nook color.
I wanted to unroot and restore to factory defaults. I sucessfully unrooted my nook tablet and restored to new software 1.4.1. However, when I go to register device, I recieve the same error message I have been getting this whole time with E-AD1202 in bottom left of screen.
Can someone please help?? Thanks so much!
If you have just unrooted your device I would try to Reset your nook tablet.
Hold the power and home key together when powered off then release once in boot screen repeat process in initial boot screen until reset pops up on your screen and follow instructions to reset your nook.

The only reason you can't register would be if you weren't back to stock. Do the factory restore, NOT data reset, again to get back to stock.

I had the exact same problem. Serial number on device software does not match the serial number on the device itself. The software serial number is already registered and B&N isn't allowing more than one email address to register the serial number. Had to get a new one. Sucks.

Need help, rooted nook after data factory reset

Ok so here is the deal. I successfully did the zergrush script (did not know about the 1 click root apk). Either way that was successful, I had installed the market, a lot of google apps and gave it back to the person. Then they decided to install the amazon app store and chose app installer instead of package installer. That messed up apk installations for everything it seemed. During the zerg rush script, it gave me the option to make the "n" button a dedicated home key button, and so I had done that. After I did a factory restore, it remained the homekey button, and now I cannot find the browser or anything, I don't know how to bring up the browser what so ever. I can seemingly access everything else in the 1.4.0 install that it gives me. Unfortunately adb is not working, I can't seem to get the <!>Nook Tablet in the device manager anymore, no matter how many times I try to force and remove the default USB Mass Storage it installs.
Basically i seemed to have screwed myself. Using various search results in both the android development thread and this thread didn't seem to yield results for anyone else dealing with this issue. If anyone can lend me a hand or point me in the right direction, or even show me a thread that someone is dealing with this issue also, that would be fantastic. Thanks community!
Also, I used the script that doesn't allow OTA updates, so it seems the sdcard load acclaim_update.zip doesn't work either.
Well... I have successfully been able to force the 1.4.1 update back onto the device, which has given me "n" menu access. Now I will reattempt to revert back to 1.4.0 and root again.
My error was that I was putting the 1.4.1 update onto the sdcard instead of onto the nook partition.

Rooting Help Needed Please

I can get my table to root using nook zergy, but when it comes time to choose a launcher, I get to choose from 3...the two off the top of my head I can remember are AWD launcher and Honeycomb launcher.
When I choose either launcher, the files cannot be found and it moves on and tells me to press any key to continue. Then it moves on to the block OTA questions and blote removal option. I can get the system to reboot, but nothing is done. When I run nook zergy again it tells me that I do not have the "hijacker" installed.
I'm totally lost. Please help.

I have done a factory reset 4 times. Will I need to install the hijacker after I root or before? Being the noob I am, I think I would install on the device, then root.
Any direction you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I'm not super technical, but I was able to root my nook color without issues.
Sounds like you just need to side-load in a replacement launcher, then eat a sandwich and drink beer. My preference is Go Launcher.
Hijacker is needed to allow a rooted tablet to be recognized by Zergy.
After a factory reset, you must "Unregister" the device to truly blank it.
If everything else went well though, sounds like you just simply need a launcher.

Use Ccleaner to clean up your pc off temp files, cache, etc and registries. Proceed with root. If you still have problems try in another machine (Windows is not your friend sometimes ... ok ok many times! )
changing computers helped. Still took me a couple of tries for some reason, but I made it work. So far my uncle is enjoying it.

Here's some steps I posted on someone elses topic. I know you said you did the reset but give it a shot:
If it comes to it, power down, hold power and 'n' and it'll turn on, then come to the black background with the n logo then power off. Release just the power button and press and hold again for 7 more times.
On the 9th time just use the power button to turn it on and it'll prompt you with some warnings. Follow through with the continue and it will perform the steps.
BE WARNED: this will perform a complete factory restore so any installed apps will be gone but it won't touch your SD card.

Use this method.
Just turn off the nook tablet, and start it by holding the power and N button. Continue to hold and you will note that the tablet turns on then off. Do this 8 times, and you will be promped for a full factory reset.

there have been reports of honeycomb launcher force closing a lot. that is according to reviews from the android market...
the only suggestion i can give you is to move the honeycomb launcher apk to system/app if it is not there already
after that go to the tgps launcher and manage apps, try clearing data and cache for honeycomb launcher and reboot. hopefully after that you won't experience any more force closes for a while.
+1 I tried hcl a little and experienced issues so went to adw launcher ex. Much better, imho.

Do you know if you're using a modified SystemUI.apk? It sounds like you might be. There is one (that was not made when those videos were made) that removes the little B&N popup menu entirely. If you want that, you might need to revert to the stock SystemUI.apk.
The Home Switcher app will allow you to change your home button functionality as you like.
ENJOY!
Thank you all for your quick response...Much appreciate it...I apologize, but being a nubie & not that familiar with the terminologies I need some direction...
I recall that the last question during the rooting process had a reference to the
SystemUI.apk & required a Y or N response...I don't recall what I replied(Y or N)...Getting a little confused with the different options...
1- How do u move the HCL apk -> system/app?...
2- Why move the HCL apk -> system/app?...
3- How to access tgps launcher and manage apps, clearing data and cache for
HCL...
4- Should the HCL be uninstalled after performing the above followed by the
ADW Launcher EX install?...
5- Can I download(install) the ADW Launcher EX from the Android market?...
6. Once the ADW Launcher EX is installed how do I flip-flop between B&N
& ADW launcher?...
I read somewhere that to get rid of Honeycomb Launcher u can go to the Android Market > My Apps and click on HCL Launcher and then Uninstall...
And something about moving it 1st to /system/app rather than /data/app(???)...With all the choices getting confused with the proper course of action...Again, I would appreciate instructions for the best/quickest(safest) approach to correct this issue...
I really appreciate your willingness to help, not to mention that this is a learning experience for me and(hopefully) I will be able to help others as a result...
Many thanks...

Thank you all for your quick response...Much appreciate it...I apologize, but being a nubie & not that familiar with the terminologies I need some direction...
I recall that the last question during the rooting process had a reference to the
SystemUI.apk & required a Y or N response...I don't recall what I replied(Y or N)...

Sounds like you entered Y. If you want to be able to switch between the B&N launcher and a custom launcher, you are going to need the stock SystemUI.apk.

Getting a little confused with the different options...
1- How do u move the HCL apk -> system/app?...
Click to collapse
You should be able to find it in /data/app. Move it to /system/app, and reinstall (and maybe reboot).

2- Why move the HCL apk -> system/app?...
Click to collapse
I think some believe this improves stability. However it prevents the market from updating the app. I use ADW EX and have not moved it and don't have any issues. I think HCL is pretty buggy (as has been stated above).

3- How to access tgps launcher and manage apps, clearing data and cache for
HCL...
Click to collapse
Use NT Hidden settings (look in dev forum) to manage applications. Select HCL from the application list and clear data/cache.

4- Should the HCL be uninstalled after performing the above followed by the
ADW Launcher EX install?...
Click to collapse
You don't have to, but you can if you want to.

5- Can I download(install) the ADW Launcher EX from the Android market?...
Click to collapse
Yes. EX is the paid version (well worth it IMO). There is a free version, but it hasn't been updated in a LONG time (in internet time).

6. Once the ADW Launcher EX is installed how do I flip-flop between B&N
& ADW launcher?...
Click to collapse
Again, you're going to need the stock SystemUI.apk

Yes, you can do that.
Hit the THANKS button for those that have helped you [there are a few here] and to be honest, you're making this whole thing way more complicated than it needs to be. You really should learn how to use the XDA Forum SEARCH function more effectively so that you get better results for what it is that you're trying to do. As well, don't just hop on the first thing you find and try it without reading as much as possible about what it is that you're attempting to do. Also try to find corroborating information for that which you are attempting before attempting. Since you're new here, it can be a bit daunting but if you put a little effort into it, you'll find a lot of info and many people that will help you accordingly.
And Welcome to XDA Forums!
ckevinwelch - Many thanks for the quick & detailed response...
I've decided that I will unroot/re-root my NT & select ADW from the list of launchers...I will also pay closer attention to the question regarding SystemUI.apk at the end of the rooting process...If I understood u correctly, my response should enable the install of the SystemUI.apk, correct?...
After rebooting I should be able to switch between launchers(B&N - ADW) since the SystemUI.apk would have been installed, correct?...(I'm assuming this is done by double-clicking the "n" button)...
I'll also head over to the DEV Forum to read about accessing NT's hidden settings in order to access tgps launcher and manage apps, clearing data and cache, etc...
I'll post back here with the results...Thank you very much for your time and all the help...

If you want to keep the stock behavior (i.e. the little popup menu that would allow you to access the stock home), DO NOT let N&Z install a new SystemUI.apk. You want the stock one.
sounds like you are on barnes and noble home screen and cant change back. you can install anycut to access menu again to force change between launcher, or download a new launcher from the internet and this will force the choice again... or download the hijack adb app and use it to patch with nook zergy to install a new launcher... or download my sd card image file and it has all the apps there to install from... got videos on many of these things on my you tube channel... however, if you have removed the N menu and set barnes and noble home screen to your default launcher, you may not have access to a method to install another launcher except to manualy push it over using ADB and a usb cable. If you ar at this point and not comfortable with command prompts, then I would just do 8 factory restore and start over with the SD card I made... I even made a video of how to recover a failed root process with the sd card. it has all the files you need so you dont have to go all over looking for them.

Thank you albertwertz for the feedback...I decided to unroot/re-root and followed ckevinwelch' suggestion, i.e., did *NOT* let N&Z install a new SystemUI.apk. & keep the stock behavior...After rebooting my NT & selecting HomeCatcher & ADW launcher as default I can now bring up B&N's stock menu...I also got the weather widget to work properly(failing when running with HoneyComb launcher)...I really appreciate the time+patience you've put into helping me along...
I've also launched tgps_launcher to familiarize myself with the settings...One thing I noticed is that Auto Mount is flagged under Development, should it be(I recall I had to un-check it during the rooting process)?...
I did some navigating to familiarize myself with the settings, options,etc.,..
I also downloaded/installed/opened a game(Solitaire) to gauge the size of mem/storage utilized...I went back to tgps_launcher to get a list of the running Apps...I noticed that the Solitaire game was listed under the "On SD card" tab, however I didn't have an SD card installed at the time(box to the right was unchecked)?????????...
I stopped Solitaire, went back to my list of Apps & noticed that the Solitaire icon switched to the android icon...I tried opening it, but got some sort of error stating that it couldn't be opened so I ended up un-installing/re-installing...How do I determine if an Apps. is closed(not running) and what's the correct way to stop it and re-claim used memory/storage?...How do I move stuff around between data <-> system files?...
Again, many thanks(trying to get all my questions in as I learn more about this conversion)...
