[Q] install apk from sdcard - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do I install an apk from the sd card?
I have a rooted Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 with Android 4.1.1. I have copied GameGuardian_6.0.0.apk onto my sd card. I have downloaded and installed appInstaller but it doesn't see the file. It does see Amazon App Installer. I have checked that I can open the pictures on the SD card in the Gallery. When I poke at my SD card, it asks if I want to unmount it (I say no). I have also tried the method klacenas has posted about using the phones internet browser to load the file. No joy. I get the error "Connection problem".
Can you help me?

go to settings, security and tick the unknown sources box. then using a file explorer go to where you have the apk file and click it, should install then

okay
Yes, I do already have "Unknown Sources" checked.
Can you recommend a file explorer?

My phone is xperia x8 (android v 2.1.1).Please help.Sorry for my english, its not my native language
I use File Expert but I had the same problem. I don't know whether this solution is available or not, but it's worth a shot right?
You should first go to settings ---> File explorer settings ---> 'tick' Root Explorer
Then the mount option should appear. Try and see
using file export and I can't paste to system folder.

I'm trying to paste a file to the system folder, I have root expert ticked and mounted the folder. But it keeps saying "operation failed", please help.
In File Expert you should mount system as read-write manualy no matter that root explorer option is ticked on.

You have to copy apk file into system folder. You can`t install it like any other app. To do that you have to be root user.
I use ES file explorer. Install ES file explorer. Go to options and select "Root Explorer" (press "Allow" when asked from superuser app) and "Mount File System". Copy your apk and go to your phone memory. Go to system and then app folder and paste it. Reboot your phone and you`re done.

Downloaded an application and now what?

I downloaded an Android application (through torrent) and transferred it on my SD card (in the Nook tablet). How do I launch it to install?
Many thanks!

Using a file explorer like ES file explorer browse to where you copied the .apk on your sdcard tap on it > select package installed > select install button.

I believe I did that
I did that by going to the file folder (through the mounted SD card notification) and clicking on that file (with .apk) extension. It says file is wrong format.
Is there any installer that I am overlooking?

hmmm hold on did you just buy this device? check the version of the firmaware , go to settings, device info, About your NOOK and let us know what software version do you have. If you're in 1.4.2 and even 1.4.1 you can't sideload. its better if you go back to 1.4.0 where all works well.

Got it.
Many, many thanks!
No, I am in firmware 1.4.0.
Just installed the explorer software and everything is peach.

Not able to install apk files

A family member has the Galaxy S3 and it is completely stock, non rooted and so on, and i know the phone does not need to be rooted to install apk files.
The problem is that i have copied over the apk file that i want onto his S3 but his phone, no matter what file explorer you use, just will not see the apk files at all, the fines worked fine on my Sensation and DHD and One X, but i just can not get the phone to see the apk files,
any idea's on what is causing the phone to not see the files?
cheers

you sure they are named as .apk file and not .zip? you should be able to see the filename without the .apk in myfiles for example (myapp.apk will appear as myapp), you will also have to check allow install from unknown sources in the security menu in settings..
yes its named .apk
i have not changed anything about the apk files from installing them on my other phones as i said, the DHD and the Sensation are both rooted but my One X is not rooted and that was able to see the apk file and install it, i seriously have no idea on why the S3 is not seeing them at all and that is after searching online for info
also i have enabled the use on non-market applications to be installed, but that is no use if the phone cant see the .apk files to install it in the first place
How you transferred the file to GS3? Is the file visible when connected to PC?

I connected the S3 to the PC via the USB cable and transferred the apk that way to the SD Card, when the phone is connected to the PC i can see the apk

getting my files to show hidden files did not work.
what it is that i'm trying to install a game, there is a data folder that has to be transferred onto the phone as well, it goes into the Android\obb folder on the sdcard, i created the folder and copied over the files into the folder, the phone.... using my files, astro or es explorer still will not see that folder i created for the files or the apk file itself that has to be installed for these files to be used.
also i tried it on a friends stock, non-rooted Galaxy S2 and it could see the files and it installed first time with no problems so right now i have no idea on what is going on with the Galaxy S3
Sorted, i know what it was, me being a tit....
when you open astro, it starts off in the SDcard folder... the samsung see's the built in memory as the SDcard.. to see the actual SDcard (the removable one lol) i have to select extSCcard..
Am i a tit or what lol
Cheers for the help anyway guys
much appreciated

[Q] Why can't I copy/paste apk to system/app? ("permission denied")

I have a rooted Verizon GS4 and am trying to install an apk as a system app using ES File Explorer. I have root enabled in ES but when I copy the apk from my sd card so system/app I get "permission denied". What am I missing?

Did you grant read write privileges?
Edit:
Nevermind they changed up the layout and settings I do see what youre talking about tho. Its gotta be something witb ESFM because I can paste something to system with root explorer no problem..

I believe so. Root Explorer is "on" and Mount R/W permission is set as Path/ =RO, /persdata/absolute=RW, /system=RW, /firmware-mdm=RO.
Does that sound right?
OK, I went ahead and bought "Root Explorer" and was able to copy the Calendar apk into the system/app folder. But I still can't get it to install. system/app is mounted as R/W but when I tap on the apk and run "install" it says "application not installed" every time. Any ideas why? FWIW, the apk is "SecCalendar_NAmerica_SPen.apk" and should be the apk for the stock Calendar app.

The not installing is normal, see what permissions another system app has, apply the same.to the one youre copying. Reboot and it should work.

OK, I'm now stumped. I've changed permissions and "owner" so it's identical to all other .apk's in the system/app folder. But after rebooting it still isn't installed. It looks right in the system/app folder, but the application is not in my app drawer. (No icon, widget, etc.) Any other ideas?
I know this is old but I'm having the same problem. The file is Read Only and I can't figure out how to change the path so that I can copy it to system/app.
Thank you
