am i the only one having such slow speeds, that watching a youtube video is not possible unless wifi is enabled?
i can browse the web just fine, but anything youtube related and it falls on its face.
that and my battery lasting a mere 6 hours and i'm beginning to hate this phone. (yes, syncs are turned off, and no live wallpaper exists)
The only fix for this I have found is to return the phone for a refund...
Sad but very true.

Well, if you did the Proxy removing trick and you called Sprint to have a "data reset for slow data speeds" and you are positive it isn't just the coverage/local tower saturation. From the sounds of your 6-hour battery you are probably in a low signal area and tower hopping and probably even roaming more than you should. I know mine does that. Mine does all of that even though I usually get decent enough speeds for everything except youtube, which I can stream it just takes an extra 5-10 seconds to buffer.
I'm on my 3rd phone, I've done all of those tricks and they have helped greatly, but, every bit of help it gets just masks the fact that to some of us this phone has terrible signal strength and tower locking and an absurdly low roaming threshold...roaming data is so slow that it's nearly useless for anything but simple web pages.
The only solution I've been able to come up with comes out on Friday I did love this phone, but, I've been in denial for a while now. I wish you better luck than I had.
Sprint 3G is horrible. If you are not on Wi-Fi or 4G watching anything on youtube is impossible. I love how Sprint has the only true unlimited data, but it comes at the price of piss-poor 3G speeds.
Your lucky to get 6 hours of battery use. I can get 6 if I lower my screen brightness to almost 0, turn off gps and sync, and not make any phone calls.

Piss poor 3G speeds? I always use 3G since there is no 4G where I live, and even if I get around 1 bar, the 3G is amazing. It is incredibly fast. Also, the battery life should last about 12-15 hours with moderate (~3 hours screen on, some calls, medium data/streaming) usage. You might need to get your phone replaced.
But yeah, 3G, WiFi or 4G, the youtube buffering was always really slow on my phone and previous phones.
OP: If you have bad signal and cut in and out of roaming, that could be the battery drain problem. The Photon 4G is great with signal and should get around an extra 3 bars of signal than the Evo 3d does. (I have a friend with it and he gets 5 bars where I get around 1-3 bars) If you really need something for signal, you could sell your Evo for around 200 dollars on craigslist and get an around 200 dollar photon from craigslist.
Do the proxy thing. It won't speed up your data persay but for me if i have the proxy in YouTube doesn't work if I take it out it does. I've done it multiple times. It's really easy.

Agreed. Having owned an evo (currently using), photon, and a 3d ill have to say that the reception issue was definitely the phone (3d) and NOT the network.
At work with my evo 4g and I can buffer a HQ youtube video fairly quickly with just one bar of reception. Yet on the 3D I can even buffer a non hq youtube video at ALL. even on wifi it couldn't stream a vid. Piss poor. The mopho was excellent. On par or better than my evo.
I shouldn't have to do all these tweaks to my phone to make it work AS A PHONE. that is the one of the main things on my list that MUST work out of the box.

Then you are lucky. Many of us live in areas with good sprint coverage...I always get 4 or higher bars but download speeds of 50 kps..around there. I only get 200 plus in the late hours..2 am and such. You tube lags and the rest of slow download headaches. Not everybody has good speeds like you and I am not a betting man, but I would think the majority of us get ****ty speeds. Hell, my cricket phone before I went sprint had faster speeds, but service was awful. Not flaming, just stating the truth. Sprint has ****ty speeds, period. Some of us, the majority...have much, much slower speeds then you
I have to agree with everyone else. I get good coverage and I'm connected to sprint's 3G network not 1x and I consistantly get below 100kbs. My phone is basically unusable without wifi connected. Once in a while I'll get like 500kbs and it feels like 4G! So Lame. It's a good thing Sprint doesn't throttle data! LMAO If they did the speeds would be like 10kbs!
maybe the problem is not on the phone but on the carrier.. i have the Evo in Portugal and the youtube speed is normal over mobile data (and not wifi) and my battery always lasts about 48 hours..
i live in the San Francisco Bay area and we have very good 3G and 4G in many areas. but it still sucks. it wasnt this bad when i first got the phone.
can someone send me a link or how-to on the proxy thingy?
what other phone options do i have that either meet or excel in the specs compared to a evo3d?

I have trouble streaming youtube on 3G too. Usually I use 4G.....but yeah its kinda annoying
I haven't had any issues on my Evo...but I know youtube themselves, (streaming from a desktop with 60 megs down...has been painfully slow...and it's only youtube.
There have been some posts on battery life being terrible lately, and here is a little alternative way to improve your battery life that I found out by accident.
We all know that Sprint 3g speeds have been taking a crapper lately, I don't think I even get 300kbps downstream anymore. I wanted to download a ROM so I quickly toggled on 4g (which I hadn't used yet on my phone) and found I was getting downstream of 2mbps - 4mbps, not great but certainly 10x as good as my 3g.
After my download, I mistakenly left 4g enabled. I come from the OG Evo where if I left 4g on my phone was dead so fast at work due to no signal. However, I found that my MoPho just put the 4g radio on standby and didn't need me to do anything and the battery wasn't draining.
So I came to this conclusion, since the 4g radio management so far seems to be pretty good for the MoPho, if the power consumption by the 4g radio is < than the factor of speed the speeds are over 3g, maybe some Angry birds, I can't remember, then it is probably worth it to leave your 4g on. Save battery + faster downloads = win!
I don't have a screencap for this, but the other day, I was off my charger for about 16 hours, had 15-20% battery left. I streamed some Pandora, downloaded a bit, read some RSS, email, a couple texts, some phone calls and had the 4g enabled all day. Not bad I say.
Doesn't 4G still have to come on every so often to push or pull email and whatnot?
Yea, but the premise is still sound I think.

I currently own a Rezound and I love the phone. However, I am about to take a career as a police officer and I need a phone that allows me to not worry about battery life while on my shift. The Rezound has OK battery life if I don't use it often, but even with the extended battery it might not be enough. I've heard great things about the Razr Maxx and it's astonishing battery life, and I'd consider trading the 720p display and unlock/S-off for something that's still fun to tinker with and gets amazing battery life. I need to make sure I have a rock solid, long lasting phone on the job.
Any opinions?
I love the phone. Stock gb I got over 2 days of battery life, but as always, it depends on ur usage habits and how u modify it if u choose to do so. On the ics leak .79 the battery doesn't seem to last as long but then again its a leak and a early one, I'm sure the official release will be just as good as the gb battery life. The later leaks r probably better too but I want to be able to return to stock for the official release when it comes (hopefully by the end of the month but I'm not holding my breath)

I can say I get 6 hrs screen on time w the latest 211 leak. On 4glte. The battery is extremely impressive and more than what I really expected it to be.
I came from the rezound and was hesitant at first. I even was considering trading my maxx for a gnex. But the battery life and soon to come ics are keeping me here. The resolution took some getting used to. But overall battery life is more important to me.

I'm new to the RAZR Maxx. I've just come over from an LG Revolution about a week ago but let me tell you, from the perspective of performance, feel, and battery life, this phone is light years ahead of where I'm coming from. Battery aside, I think I've tinkered with the phone enough already to say it's absolutely solid.
WRT the battery directly, because I'm so used to having to plug my Revo in no matter where I'm at (the office, the car, the train station, the airport gate, home, etc.) I still have micro USB chargers everywhere I've been intentionally stressing the Maxx's battery to get a feel for just how much better it is. Mind you the Revo, as bad as its battery life was out of the box, when coupled with bad cellular at my office, would last me 6-8 hours off a charger with low use and sync toggled off.
This is where the Maxx has truly astonished me. Same surroundings but now I'll leave GPS, sync, wifi on (even though there's no wifi at the office), and use a 30 minute email update interval, etc. Don't dismiss the 'new phone use factor' - the constant tweaking settings and unusually high phone use to learn the new UI . . . and the battery is still is over 60 percent by the end of my work day.
That remaining 60 percent is more than enough to carry me through until morning and beyond. Bottom line, I'm figuring where before I was getting 6-8 hours, under my self imposed more demanding data conditions with the Maxx I'm getting well in excess of 24.
I chose the Maxx instead of pre-ordering the SIII because of battery life and I am not at all disappointed. In fact, I'm still being pleasantly surprised. Recommended.
Forgot to add I'm at 2 days 3 hours with 30% battery life left.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies! Seems like the battery life is where it's at, and that's what I'm going for first and foremost.
How about sunlight visibility? I had a Bionic and while the screen was horrible, it did very well in the sunlight. My Rezound however... not so much.
I just switched to this phone from the evo 4g (sprint), and I believe the evo, and the rezound have the same size battery, and are advertised as the same battery life. I too needed a device that got better battery life, and let me just say... WOW The maxx gets unreal battery life... Easily 2 days, with not quite heavy use, but pretty close. 720 display... Meh... when ur looking at a 4.3" screen, does it really matter if its hd? I doubt it... And I def prefer easily triple the battery life!
Maxx is awesome!!! Unplugged from charger at 6:15 am this morning, its now 12:04 and have 90 percent. You won't regret the Maxx.

I don't trust anything with Bloomberg's name on it. Sorry.
Greetings from another public servant!
Unless you just want a new phone, just grab a car charger since you'll probably be in your unit most of the day.
Every time I'm on duty, I keep my car charger with me.
Just remember to secure your phone when your running emergency. A Eazr flying around the vehicle while clearing intersections is annoying, and dangerous.

I bought one when they released. Now we have 3. Battery is where its at. Screen visibility is pretty good if you max it out. I have it set to automatically max brightness when I put it in the car dock. Max brightness will definitely hit you're battery tho. But everything maxed out, it will still get you through am 8 hour day, streaming internet radio over Bluetooth. Cut back to 3g,, and it will go for many more hours. No telling how stable ICS will be, but GB is just locked down reliable.call clarity is the best, period. No regrets on this purchase.

I too came from a Thunderbolt, had my Razr Maxx for about a week or so now. I switched because of data connection issues and the terrible battery life I've had with the thunderbolt.
This thing is amazing... But I don't like it 3 things a bout it.
1. The battery meter in the settings page only shows battery percentage in tens intervals, (90%, 80%, 70%....)
2. It takes a lot longer to charge the thing, (I guess you can expect that from the bigger battery) so when I heavily use it on certain days I'm left with it charging for like an hour or two and the battery percent has only gone up a small amount (granted I'll have wifi tether on while charging)
3. I switched from the thunderbolt because of data connectivity always flaking out. and The Maxx seems to have this issue as well. Although I don't believe it is as bad as the Thunderbolt.... But I've only had the Maxx for less than 2 weeks.
Overall I like the phone and hope my connectivity issue will work its' self out soon.

Interesting... the Rezound has been the best phone I've owned as far as data connectivity. It's never flaked out of 4G or 3G and left me hanging. I had that problem with the Charge and Bionic. Even my DX was rock solid with 3G signal.

2 mine goes all day w over 6 hours screen on time on 4g. Just charge while you sleep. That's almost an entire workday worth of screen on usage.
3 ics 211 has completely fixed all data connectivity issues I ever experienced w gbread.

And I've really liked HTC devices, (up until every phone they put out looked pretty much the same) But both of the models I've had (G1 & Thunderbolt) were troubled with connectivity issues. And I had also had both of the replaced and the issues were still crept up again. Maybe I just screw up all the phones I tinker with.....lol, I don't know

I appreciate it man.
The battery indicator app I think you're talking about puts up a second battery icon in the task bar, and I'm not a big fan of that. I like my screen to look clean and not redundant. speaking of that I kinda chuckle when I see screen shots of phones and the peeps have the little clock in the corner of their screen plus a fancy widget clock in the middle of their screen. not putting them down... I just think the redundancy is funny.
And I'm trying to hold off on rooting and just going to give the ICS update a try since it suppose to be on its way out by the end of June (we'll see).
but just in case can you link the 211 ICS you are talking about I looked in the dev section and only saw something for safestrap.
Thanks though.

I was the 1st of my friends and family to get the RAZR MAXX. I bought it on release day. I have 8 friends who upgraded to the RAZR MAXX, and they are all very happy with it. I bought one for my father for Father's Day, and he loves the thing.
I tried the GNex and the Rezound, both fine phones. But at the end of the day my RAZR MAXX won out. I work 12 hour days, and need to have a phone that can keep up with my busy day without having to "dumb down" the phone. After working 12 hours, I typically have >50% of battery life left. That's with moderate use. With light to moderate use, I've gone 2 full days between charges. I never have to use the "smart actions" either. Also I believe the RAZR MAXX has more function than what you get from the Rezound or GNex. Motocast is a brilliant idea. It allows you to access your computer and it's files from your phone. Including pictures, music, video, and documents. I hope this helps you.
This is mainly to anybody that has a Razr or Razr Maxx and is thinking about getting the GS3 but is hesitant because of wireless radio or battery life.
I gotta say the wireless radio has impressed me so far. I didn't expect that coming from a Motorola. I would say they equal the same in wireless radio in bad or fringed areas. I've tested!! I remember with my Razr I would get signals other people struggled with even Verizon people. To my surprise, the GS3 gives me no less in the wireless radio department.
The Wi-Fi range is actually better on my GS3.
Battery is good. Nothing compared to the Maxx but who expects that with 2,100 mAh?
After first charge I checked it last at 20% and screen on time was over 5 hours.
After second charge, 5% a little over 4 hours of screen on time
Last night I checked it at 40% battery and screen on time was over 4 hours.
I'm on Wi-Fi often and I turn off mobile data to stay under my data cap. I turn it on when I need internet and not in range for Wi-Fi. I'm more on the Wi-Fi for the data cap issue but saving battery is a bonus!
So far so good for me. Keep in mind this is just my experience. I don't have wireless radio problems with my GS3 but I've read some people do.
Anybody thinking of getting the GS3? DO IT!!! I don't regret it at all. I almost got the iPhone 5 but it came down to expandable memory and price.
This was a tough decision for me, but today I bit the bullet and got the Maxx hd. I am posting this in the DNA forum because that is the phone I wanted. I truly wanted that phone.
DNA pros, and why I wanted the phone:
Fastest, most efficient processor available.
Best screen available.
I like sense and the dialer it comes with.
Solid cell signal in weak areas (this fact eliminated Samsung for me, but neutral with Motorola)
Reviews say great build quality.
5 inch screen
I prefer the physical buttons rather than on screen
Great camera
$100 less
I like the stock music app
Why I didn't want the Maxx hd:
Old specs
I don't like pentile screens, my eyes notice the little dots
Terrible reviews on the camera
Not a fan of blur
Not updated to 4.1, doubt it will come before the year like they promise
Why I bought the maxx hd:
I travel a lot and am a heavy user, especially when traveling. I figured I would be cussing the battery way more than cussing the screen and camera.
I want an sd slot, or more than 11gb of free space.
I really like the notification light. I frequently work in a conference room with other people and hated the tbolt light, couldn't see it while sitting on my desk. DNA is in the grill too, tho I hear it is easier to see. The one on the back is a waste to me.
Those are my thoughts. Both great phones, tho I am truly bummed. If there was an sd slot and 2500 battery rather than 2020, I would have the DNA tomorrow. If I didn't travel like I do, I probably would have gotten the DNA because the wireless charging would negate the small battery.
I understand that some people need more battery life than the DNA gives, but when flying aren't you able to plug your phone in? (it's been ~10 years since I've flown) If you had to in between flights that would be horrible but I personally wouldn't care much during... well, maybe if I wanted to use the phone landscape since the plug is on the bottom. If you're traveling by car, you can plug it in pretty easily as well. Just my .02. You have a good 2 weeks to decide and there's a lot of cons for the Maxx HD for you.

Honestly how do you manage to go through a whole battery in a trip.
Assuming you for some reason you only travel with no other electronics except for a phone and refuse to plug it in during the trip, how can you possibly use more than this.
Get to the airport with 100% battery
Use it for maybe a half hour, so you may be at 85% now if you were playing some games for that time
Get on the plane and put it on airplane mode, you may be at 70% by the end of the flight if it was long and you were playing some more games
You have a layover so you eat some lunch, check up on some emails, surf the web for a bit and call your wife and chat for a bit, so your at 60% now
Next flight comes around, put it back in airplane mode, by the end of it your at 45 if you played some more games.
Now your at your destination, but your a half an hour from your hotel but your company loves you and pays for a driver, you play even more games, your now at 25% battery.
Now your at your hotel, you can plug your phone in and watch some TV and never got a battery warning.

why not spend $50 on a really good battery pack rather than an extra $100 for a bit more battery in the phone? I personally carry a small 5600 mAh external battery that cost me $35 as to render battery life a non-issue

I never understood the travel argument. First all airports have charging ports. 2nd, if you travel that much...why are you using a phone at all? Get a Nexus 7 or dare I say an iPad. Way better battery life and experience for when you fly. No need to use your phone anyway.
However I'm glad you're happy with your choice. Moto is a complete non starter for me these days with Ft Knox bootloaders and I refuse to to be at their mercy for updates.

why not spend $50 on a really good battery pack rather than an extra $100 for a bit more battery in the phone? I personally carry a small 5600 mAh external battery that cost me $35 as to render battery life a non-issue

The Razr Maxx HD is only $200 on Amazon - $180 with a new plan. The price of the phone dropped substantially the day after its release. I'd also personally find the battery charger annoying to carry around and plug in and would rather buy a phone with the battery life I need.

Yeah, that is about how it goes, minus the showing up at 100%. My thunderbolt with the 2750 battery sometimes was on its last legs getting home Friday night starting at 90%. I usually have a 3 hour layover Friday nights.

Ya but I wanted to keep unlimited and you can't do that thru amazon using the second line trick.
2 other reasons I forgot to mention in my original post is foxfi works in the maxx and voice / data work on 3g. I am often in 3g only areas and talk on the phone while tethered.
My post as in no way bashing the battery life on the DNA. I read pretty much every review it there and the 25 page thread on the DNA on this site. My tbolt got me 4-6 hours of in screen time, I know the maxx is more like 5-7 hours on screen time and the DNA is closer to 3. I am impressed reading about what they have done to increase battery life, it looks like they accomplished a lot since the tbolt and rezound days. And if my wife were looking for a phone, that's the phone I would get her today. And I think the battery works for probably 95% of the users it there. If I have a friend looking for a phone, that's the one I'll recommend.
Just not for me.
I tend to rely on one of those ZaggSparq portable chargers to give the little more unmpf I need to finish the flight or day with my TBolt and expect the same with the DNA.
I find it interesting when there's a battery life discussion there's always someone saying "all you need to do is A, B, and C and you should get through your day".
I work construction and there's constant battles over there never being enough outlets, besides do you want your $600+ phone sitting there with 40-50 strangers walking past it? I went almost a year carrying a 5000mah battery pack for my RAZR and it's a royal PITA pulling that whole mess out of your pocket every time you get a call, message or just want to skip a song on Pandora. TuneIn radio can kill a 1700 battery by 1 pm.
You have no idea how liberating it is to not have to jump through hoops trying to do everything you can to save battery life. Turning on/off lte, gps, wifi, and airplane mode when it's needed, brightness to minimum, trying to plug in for a minute here and there to get that precious charge.
Anyone that tells others to jump through all those hoops obviously lives and works next to power outlets 24/7 or their life is so dull that they look forward to babysitting their settings like having another child.
A big freaking battery just works. No merry go round swapping of settings or constantly eyeing the battery meter. Put your settings where you want, leave lte on, then just unplug it when you get up then plug it in when you go to bed.
Do i wish i had the guts of the DNA? Of course. Would i give up the huge battery and 48gb of storage for it? Not even if it was free. I will never be chained to an outlet again.

I again agree with all this. I have a rezound and don't babysit my settings unless I'm outdoors and knowing I'm not going to be using it, I'll swap it to 3g only. I use the extended battery and have 7 of them in the house between the wife and I to use (thunderbolt for her, uses same extended). I don't need the battery life, but it is nice to have.
No phone is perfect right now (not even the iphone and its small screen). All of them comprimise something. If there was a perfect phone, it would be a no brainer on what to get, but everyone will have to choose what is best for them. For me, I think I'm going to try a note 2 first, see if the reception issues are a problem for me (live in a big city so hoping not). If it doesn't work for me, then the DNA will be plan B. I survived with the HD7 which was worse for battery life and still only 16gb so I know I can do it.

While your point is valid, it's also a special use case. Everyone is different and you can't expect everyone to have your lifestyle. I'm not defending OEM choices, but the vast majority of people don't have that kind of situation and you can't expect them to invest extra money into things the majority of people don't need. The beauty of Android is choice. If you found a phone that suits your needs, great. I'm not sure why you feel the need to come here and hate on people giving options to help make their lives easier in different situations. I have spent a great deal of time in my career working in stats and analytics, and some of the most rewarding pieces are showing people who so staunchly "can't believe" this or that exactly how big and different the world is outside their backyard.
I would by a battery pack and wifi drive before I get the Maxx HD. The screen and the S4 Pro processor is reason enough.

Are you a member of the Admiral's club or something? I travel a lot and there is a fight to get to an open outlet - often you'll find one on the floor by the window where no seats are. I've been to a couple of airports that have some outlets but for the most part there is about 1 outlet per 100 passengers.

Well said. For many of us, we just want a phone that works reliably for a 24 hour period with normal use. We don't have to buy a thicker battery for it, buy a spare battery for it, buy a car battery and strap it under our shoulder, walk within the radius of an extension cord or only turn our phone on when we have to actually use it or scheduled an incoming call.

And how many people at JFK, LaGuardia, OHD, ATL, LAX, DFW etc do you see fighting for access? Do you see one at every gate?

Many sources have cited that the DNA gets about 4.5 hours of screen on time. Not 3.
Also, how the hell did you get 4-6 hours of screen on time with the Thunderbolt? That has the worst battery/power management I've had of any phone.

I had the extended battery that was 2750. After the updates, it got much better battery life and has a good radio.
And from what I understand is the 4.5 hours was unplugging it and 4.5 hours straight. That doesn't translate to unplugging at 6:30 am, screen on for 4.5 hours, then be at 10% at 10:00 at night.
My first day today with the Maxx, I unplugged at 3:00 am, talked on the phone for an hour, and had 5.5 hours on screen time by 9:00 pm when I plugged it in. I was on it playing with settings a lot and reading while I was fixing a computer with its 20 reboots. I am guessing the DNA would have been dead at 3:00 pm. Lol
