Loading TWRP backup from S3 onto cousin's S2 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

possible and smooth? Not moving recovery and cache.

You are only asking for trouble doing this. The devices are not the same and the file structure is also different so you could end up having flash his phone back to stock

It wouldn't be a good idea to do this because the system partition from the S3 would be incompatible with the S2's system partition, as well as several other partitions that are part of the backup. In addition to all kinds of problems it would cause. Overall I would recommend against doing this.

Is it possible? Probably can.
Will it boot? Definitely not, 90% chance of hardbricking it too.
So go ahead and pick your poison.

Thanks for the explanation

ROM using all my phone space?

As a new person to root I have another question that I need help with. After rooting my EVO I somehow did a factory reset and wiped all data from my phone. That gives me around 400mb. After flashing synergy rom and adding a apps I noticed my internal phone storage was 75mb remaining out of 250mb. I have no where near the amount of apps I had before with less space. So my question is, does the ROM file take up internal phone space once flashed? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks a lot for your help.

On sense ROMs, more files are made in the /data partition, due to the greater amount of lib files and other things created by Sense. When you install one app it makes data in /data/data and /data/dalvik , and sense has many apps so the space used goes straight to hell in a basket. But use a Vanilla Rom, and space should go down a bit...Use disk analyses to see what's using the space.

Thanks ill try that. I'll start looking for a vanilla ROM. Any particular one to use with 2.3? I just rooted with the revolutionary. Thanks again.

I don't actually know which ROMs are avail for Evo, maybe you can use MIUI/CM7 or the most popular AOSP? If you choose to use Sense, just remove some apps from the /system partition.
along with resetting the phone to "factory defaults", did you wipe cache and dalvik cache 3 times? I used CWM the other day on my phone to install a ROM and forgot to wipe cache also... kept getting "device is low on memory" errors. Wiped cache and dalvik 3 times, installed the ROM again, everything worked perfectly.
Why 3 times? Extreme redundance LOL. Once is enough. Wiped means its wiped doing it two more times is mildly retarded.

I did wipe them before installing the Rom, yes. I just tried to make a backup last night to try some new things and my backup keeps failing now.

Could be bad blocks on the MTD/Nand chip? If the block are bad then the ROM might not be restore-able anymore. or the backup could be bad, try another ROM instead.
My SD card was full so that's why the backups failed. I had no idea the files were so big. Now still in search for another Rom. No luck with finding the vanilla Rom.

random stuff in sdcard

Just a quick question, in my sdcard root, i have two files that I'm unsure of.
1. efsbackup.tar.gz
2. efsdev-mmcblkmp1.img.gz
anyone have an idea of what these are and if i can delete them?
Have you flashed cm7 recently? I want to say I had the same files when I did a nandroid back up on cm7. I also remember from my miui captivate days that we had to back up the efs files before flashing ..I just deleted the files when I went to another Rom

Something (not sure what) backed up your EFS partition.
Probably good to keep these around in case something bad happens.
does it have anything to do with flashing an i9100 rom recently?

That's the only possibility. I have the same files and Siyah is the only change I've made on my device.
Moar info!
If you used the galaxy s unlock it puts the files in a folder, not the top level of the sdcard.
I would say its foolish to delete the efs backup created by the unlock program.
Also while it is recommended to keep the files siyah creates (they will be recreated every time you flash a new version of siyah, they will just keep coming back) it is not required. You CAN safely delete them.
Again, there's not much point in deleting them, they will be back. And you're safer having them, and they are pretty small.
Always keep some method of fully recovering your phone handy (full stock Odin or something that will overwrite ALL the changes and flashing you have done) just in case.
Backups are good mm'kay.

[Q] Format System GP5.0

I am very familiar with the inner workings of CWM on regular phones, but these devices seem a bit different. Will formatting System brick the device by removing CWM from the partiton, or is it the same as a phone where CWM is in the kernel partition in boot? I ask because I have not seen any developers ask to format the system (along with factory reset/data/cache/dalvik) when going from GB to ICS, which on a phone IS the correct way to change operating systems.
Quick answer would be great as I am in flashing mode tonight!
Thanks

It will not remove CWM. Don't forget, CWM is normally either on a separate partition (recovery) or for samsung devices, in the kernel directly, so It will not brick your device, it will just get to either to a infinite bootloop, stuck at samsung logo or reboot to recovery. In the case you should backup using nandroid before use.
That's what I figured, just wanted to be sure. Things are just different on these g-players. I like to use the system format option to get a true "clean" install.
Thanks for the quick response

Most ROMs format the system while they are installing so you don't always need to do it manually

Best way to clean up the internal SD

So in my flashing craziness I forgot to use the sd downgrade when I went from an AOSP rom back to a 4.1.2 rom. Definitely a noob mistake that I will never make again.
Now my internal SD seems extremely cluttered with a 0 folder similar to the main one.
Is there a simple way to clean this up?
FWIW I did flash the new Beans 18 build then flash the downgrade earlier today, however I am currently on a restored backup of Beans 17.
I have considered flashing back to stock and then rooting again to make it all clean, but that won't take care of the unused and duplicate folders in my internal storage...right?!
Yes I am new here so please be kind! I spend a ton of time teaching myself and learning about rooting and customizing, but this is one thing I wanted a definite answer to before I end up deleting a crucial file or folder.

Easiest way would be to use a file explorer and copy/paste anything from /0 you want to keep over to the correct sdcard location. Then you can just delete the /0 folder.
Thanks for taking the time to answer. I was able to delete all but 2 sub folders under 0...the download and jelly beans folder refuse to delete. Not sure what that's about but at least I now have my internal in better shape!

Reboot to TWRP, go to advanced to fix the permissions on those two folders and then delete it from there, worked for me.
I also found trouble deleting beans, but got it done from a pc. Different beans for different fiends.

I haven't used ES in a long long long time. If it will allow you full R/W privileges like Root Explorer you should be able to do it but I honestly don't know about ES because I use Root Explorer. Maybe the post about boring into recovery would work.

I was in the same boat as you buddy. I put everything I wanted from my internal memory to my sd card and went into TWRP and wiped the internal data(the one you have to type yes to continue) then wiped cache system and data and reflashed beans room and then used my backup from my sd card

^ This is the way to go. Just get rid of everything and start over. Although make sure to have the rom on your external sd so after you wipe internal you have the rom to flash. I do it when I get bored and want to clear out old app folders

If I needed to clear the internal, I would remove important files and then do an internal storage wipe on a clean Rom from twrp.
Current device:
Samsung Galaxy Note 2
Retired devices:
Huawei Ascend, Droid Charge, Droid Bionic
I used this wipe application called Zoot's wipe script, it has the Aroma wipe installer in it. This has several wiping variations but the big wipe is the Mega Wipe. Make sure you transfer all your important files to your external sd card because this Mega Wipe will wipe your internal memory clean to where you have 10gb free again. (For me on Verizon we only can get the 16gb gnote2, so after Touch Wiz sucks up the memory it needs you only have about 10gb free) Download this zip file and when you flash into recovery, I use TWRP, this can be used on Clock work too. flash this zip file and select Mega to clean out your internal sd. Super Wipe can be used to flash different roms too.

Safety Regarding Modifying Partition Layout

If I were to go about repartitioning the flash, what should I/would I need to do to preserve current partition layout, making sure I can easily restore to "normal". Obviously backup all the partitions, what else though?

I might be wrong but from what I read in other threads, repartitioning the SIII is not as easy as for instance the HTC Desire and might brick your device with a high probability. maybe someone with more experience could answer your question though.

No, I think you misunderstand.
A. I wouldn't use Odin, I'd use Heimdall
B. I INTEND to repartition my device as part of a project I'm working on.
You are working outside the known universe for S3 users, I've heard of no-one else attempting repartition.
EMMC chip in this device appears to be very fragile, best of luck with your experiment.

Fragile; how so? I can accomplish what I want with loop files but I'd rather use partitions.

Try reading the hundreds of threads where people are left with a hard brick and odin can't even flash a pit, the title of insane bug for the emmc chip says it all. Also many posts by users of cache 'improving' software, again left with a hard brick after resizing a partition.
If you can change/restore the partition structure, without replacing the emmc chip, you'll be one up on everyone else.
