Hi,
Can someone if any provide us with his experience with unlocking HTC Butterfly (Singapore & China Version) and installing recovery ??
Is there any success on this matter??
Unlocked successfully but still no working recovery !!!!

Depends on which phone you are talking about.
920e (China Version) you can use DNA's recovery.
920d (International Version/Singapore version?) unlock available but no working recovery.

I have the 920e, DNA recovery DEFINITELY DOES NOT WORK! So far no one has gotten recovery working on 920e. I am in China currently and reading through all the chinese sites people are trying to use TWRP and CMW posted on XDA but no luck.

Sorry if I'm wrong, but I found all those info from google, it seems these people are able to boot into recovery to flash SU
The Chinese sites are very confusing when they are naming the phone. Many sites just call it X920e/Butterfly/DNA but they are acutally 3 different phones.

I've tried all of those and none work. Look at the screenshot for the 1st link, that's a recovery for the Galaxy S2. Hard to trust some of those chinese sites, that's why I come here knowing that the good devs of XDA will figure things out
Had the chance to sneak into China and get a HTC Butterfly (920e variant) there for myself. Full of Chinese crap apps and no Google apps at all
Anyway, unlock (via htcdev) worked fine but that's pretty much where the fun stops so far. Like jlevy73 I tried pretty much everything written anywhere on the interwebz and nothings works. No recovery, no root, no gapps, no play store.

Yep, quite sad.
Off topic, anyone here with the X920e having issues with HTC Sense Weather? I'm in Beijing and the weather is off by about 10F. It's also night but the icon shows the sun. I've cleared data for both weather and HTC Sense but no luck. GPS is working ok though.

u can still flash DNA recovery and gain temp root, just u can't use the full function of recovery. from there you can still install Google Play etc, and remember not to reboot the phone.
I'm wondering if you bought 920e and use it outside of China, will you be able to connect to 3G services? I thought 920e is TD-CDMA instead of WCDMA.

How do you flash gapps if you cannot get into recovery? How do you flash SU without getting into recovery? Perhaps I am missing something obvious.
The 920e is WCDMA only so in China it would be compatible with China Unicom. TD-CDMA is what China Mobile uses. The 920e would be compatible with ATT in the US.

More or less (once more) just confirming / repeating what jlevy73 said:
- How do you gain temp root if the (DNA) recovery doesn't seem to work properly?
- Why not reboot the phone? oO Because of the broken recovery? That is not run in a normal boot up.
- the x920e is made to work with China Unicom exclusive (but interestingly isn't simlocked) in Mainland China and they use WCDMA which works perfectly here in Europe. No 4G chip, though.

It's possible that recovery was installed, we're just not able to access it in the traditional way. I am going to try and adb push superuser into recovery. If that works, then we will have root and can then push google apps into recovery. I am going to give it a go and see what happens.

Okay, just embarassing myself a little here. If I first mount /system before pushing anything in there, it actually works! Rooted Thanks katsuya82 and jlevy73 for the necessary hints

Trying to make use of it (by trying to boot into recovery from rom manager) fails, though.
On the positive side, pushing the play store worked easily. Full access to the store but still no root

Good to see you made progress. I also have root but still don't have access to the play store. I was able to push the store and it's in my app folder but when I try to open it, it immediately closes.
What adb command did you use to push the play store? I think I might have set the wrong permissions with chmod.
These are the commands I used:
adb push system/app/Phonesky.apk /system/app
adb shell chmod 6755 /system/app/Phonesky.apk

And how did you get root? Ah, figure chmodding su isn't enough and I should also chmod the apk, reading what you did with Phonesky.apk Nope, still no working root
Play Store itself is only one part, you need some of the gapps stuff too. Not sure which, just installed what looked important (GoogleLoginService.apk, GoogleServicesFramework.apk and such). Didn't need to chmod anything gapps related. Oh and use the right version for Android 4.1, not 4.2

Really that's all I did, push su, superuser and busybox then chmod them. When I rebooted I had superuser installed and was able to install root explorer, titanium, etc.

Frustration, lost root and after pushing all the google apps, framework, etc still don't have access to play store. Guess I will have to wait until a real recovery is released.

Okay, I was just being stupid, once again: only did chmod 755 on the su binary instead of 6755. Also, the Superuser.apk (like any other apk) doesn't need more privileges than 644.
Now that I have root, I used rom manager (which is the recovery I use), to install gapps completely (did a cherry pick before). Worked perfectly. So the recovery of the DNA is fully working except something with the screen driver is messed up.

anyone know anything about these tablets? It is a cheap brand from bestbuy, I was just wondering if anyway could help me to get the android market to run on it.. It is a custom Itomic branded rom, it only has swift market or something like that on it.. Also, the recovery is not a regular recovery. When I go into recovery it just shows Itomic on the screen and says recovery mode at the bottom.. Itomic BestBuy That is the link to bestbuy for specs on it..
TIA

Are you rooted? If you're not rooted then go here: HERE and pick up the latest SuperOneClick program to get you started. Once you're rooted you need to download the latest Android Market apk here: HERE. Put that file on the root of the sd card in your tablet and then use a file explorer such as Root Explorer to find the file. Once you know where the apk is located you can use an APK installer to install the file. Then viola! You now have the Android market on your new tablet.
Trust me when I say you want to avoid a resistive screen (no multitouch) and 256M RAM (slooooow) as I have a 10" tablet with those specs.
Its not mine, i would not buy one with those specs just for the reason of I am used to my evo, not the best phone, but I like the way it responds and I would want the same or better response from a tablet... This is actually my 10 year old cousins tab, and it did not come with the android market as stated above so I am trying to fix that... I am nervous to root it because it doesnt have a regular recovery so if something goes wrong I would not be able to fix it... So I am looking for a dev that has experience with this or a similar tab... If I knew linux programming Id be a dev but unfortunately I dont know and at this point in time I do not have the time to learn...
That one click root program won't hurt anything. I've rooted many tablets and phones with it and it works like a charm, no problem. Once you're rooted and get the market make sure you get rom manager and see if there are any flashable recoveries for the tablet.
Sent from my SkyRaider Bolt using Tapatalk
I also forgot to mention I cannot get adb drivers to work... I have dev on and it still wont recognize the android drivers.. It is not the micro usb but mini usb, I have tried multiple usbs but it still will not find the correct drivers...
I dug into this and just found the tab came rooted, all I had to do was mount the system as rw through adb and then manually changed su to the gb su.. I installed root explorer and rom manager but unfortunately there isnt a recovery for it... I saw on androidtablets.net that a guy is willing to port cwm to any tab for you but am nervous to try anything because it is my cousins... I think for now I will just install the market and be done..
Yeah that would be the best since it doesn't look like it's too widely supported. But cm would give it a smoother feel and be a little nicer, but do what you choose.

Very often when you want to write files to a particular partition on ADP1, you will get a "Permission Denied" if the partition is mounted read-only.
To get around this, you need to mount the partition read-write. Typically this is done with /system partition
$ adb shell
$ su
$ mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
(Replace /dev/block/mtdblock3 & /system with appropriate device path and mount point, as obtained from cat /proc/mounts) quoted from: android-tricks.blogspot.com

actually I figured it out once I got a root explorer. Im able to find the su file, but not really sure what, if anything Im supposed to change. Once thats taken care of , how to I download the android market? Do i just find an APK online for it? Or is therre another program or something I have to go through. Thanks again, im learning...
Sorry its taken so long to reply, when i say I changed the SU in /system/xbin, I opened windows cmd and ran "adb shell" "cd to /system/xbin" "rm ./su" then "exit" still in the cmd i adb pushed the su file that i extracted from this file su-2.3.1-efgh-bin-signed.zip (thanks to goo-inside.me) with "adb push C:\su /system/xbin" I then pushed superuser.apk to /system/app with "adb push C:\superuser.apk /system/app" then "adb reboot" and when it turns back on you are fully rooted. now download gapps from goo-inside.me then extract the system/app from the zip you need to install GoogleServicesFramework.apk OneTimeInitializer.zip SetupWizard.apk Talk.apk Gmail.apk Vending.apk with "adb push *.apk /system/app"
The world's first ereader with a color Mirasol display is finally on the market, but unfortunately it's running a severely locked-down Android by the Korean bookstore chain Kyobo. The Kyobo ui is entirely in Korean, the browser blocks downloads, and the reader app is crap. In other words, it's basically useless to anyone outside of Korea. A few enterprising Americans have imported them and been extremely disappointed. Will someone please take a look at this device and see if it can be rooted or if something else can be done to make it of use to the rest of us?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Nate over at The Digital Reader has a firmware update that supposedly contains all of the installed apps. He is asking for someone to try and hack it. He has a download link for the firmware at The Digital Reader.
I also posted this as a question here on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432283
it is rooted since some time already.
files and instructions are in the following archive, but since instructions are in korean, i'll do a writeup below.
(argh! spambot won't allow this link, so you'll have to piece it together...)
www<dot>4shared<dot>com/zip/aLwRc7ZG/mirasol_rooting.html
edit: needed files are also in an attachment below
the gist is that you need to flash the boot partition via fastboot, setup root and busybox, and then modify secure->install_non_market_apps in settings.db.
you will need to have adb and fastboot from the android sdk working on your computer. There are many posts about this elsewhere, so i won't go into the details.
also, i only print filename without path, just find the corresponding file in the mentioned archive and modify the commands accordingly.
flash the boot partition via fastboot
first get your kyobo into fastboot mode (with usb cable attached) by pressing volume-down at bootup. timing here can be a bit finicky, but easiest seems to be to shut it down completely and then press just after pressing power.
issue a 'fastboot devices' on computer, if successful it should give you the response '???????????? fastboot' or similar. if empty or hangs, try again by rebooting the kyobo by pressing power with volume-up held (you can go into fastboot immediately after reboot by volume-down as expected).
when positive response above, you can flash by
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
and then reboot by
Code:
fastboot reboot
edit: simplified fastboot instructions, thanks to smb_gaiden, whose button-poking-fu is strong.
setup root and busybox
with boot partition flashed you now have adb access, so let's use it. let the device boot as normal, and then issue the following.
Code:
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp
adb push fixsu.sh /data/local/tmp
adb push su /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/busybox
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fixsu.sh
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/su
adb shell /data/local/tmp/fixsu.sh
adb shell ln -s /data/local/tmp/busybox /system/xbin/busybox
after this, install some apk's from the archive
Code:
adb install superuser.apk
adb install blackmart.apk
fix non-market apps setting
only thing left is to change a setting to allow non-market apps to be installed. if you don't care about your current settings (locale, etc), you can just push the settings.db from the archive like so:
Code:
adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/
if you *do* care about your settings, you'll need to pull the settings.db, edit it in some sqlite db editor (set secure->install_non_market_apps to 1) and push the result.
that's it. all rooted. now you just need to install angry birds and yer' set ;-)
Adb doesn't seem to start properly on device
Hello.
I did succeed in flashing the bootloader via fastboot.
However when I boot device - I see adb on usb only for some initial seconds, and then it disappears.
For that matter my device already had December firmware on it.
Any ideas how to activate adb on device?
Thank you,
Leonid
it may be that persist.service.adb.enable is reset, stopping the adbd service. try flashing the attached boot image instead, see if that fixes it. it is the same as above, except that persist.service.adb.enable is ignored.
edit: i took a look at the december update, afaict it should pose no problem (very few changes in there).
Once these steps are done, how do you install google market?
Thanks.
edit: the original instructions were snafu, so i replaced them with something that should actually work.
getting android market running on the kyobo
needed files are in the attached archive.
install like so:
Code:
adb remount
adb push DrmProvider.apk /system/app
adb push MediaProvider.apk /system/app
adb push DownloadProvider.apk /system/app
adb push GoogleServicesFramework.apk /system/app
adb push Market-3.4.4.apk /system/app
adb push init.qcom.post_boot.sh /system/etc
adb push fix-shared-user.sh /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fix-shared-user.sh
adb shell /data/local/tmp/fix-shared-user.sh
wait for the reboot, find market in the menu, and off you go (with downloads this time ;-)
if downloads still do not work after this, try re-executing the last line. android periodically writes to the file we are modifying, which might clobber our changes if unlucky.
I am thinking about buying one of these because I have seen it on sale for 50% discount. However, the general reviews aren't too encouraging, so will rooting make any difference to overall performance?

Which version is currently rootable? I bought mine this week and want to be sure it is still applicable with the method here.
Do I need a USB driver to work this hack? EDIT: Yes, found with a web search.
When do I press the volume keys? Immediately after power? Similar timing? When I see the flicker on the screen? When I see the logo? Before all that? EDIT: I did not need the volume up key to get into fastboot.
Thanks!
rooting for beginners
Some friends and i ordered the kyobo to solve our eye-problem (nystagm)
We still can´t figure out, how to root it.
Can you please give us some rooting instruktion vor beginners??
It would be so essential for us, as the kyobo is little worth without forgeign apps!
Thank you very much!

Hi, Managed to root my kyobo after about 8 h trying. I installed the firmware update on my kyobo, that is found on the web, as instructed from the SD card. Then I installed fastboot and adb on my computer (search for 'how to install fastboot and adb'), as I found instructions for that as well. To enter fastboot I kept Kyobos, volume down button for about 10 sec, when booting the device (kyobo connected to computer with USB) - nothing happens -> however on my computers command window (cmd), 'fastboot devices' command produces an answer with '? ..' as it should. The biggest issue I had was to get adb working. For this purpose I installed and removed a couple of USB drivers - I don't really know how I got it to work finally.
You can tell if you have succeeded installing a useful usb driver, if you enter the 'adb devices' command in the cmd window and it returns a device number. Then you are ready to go with the rest of the commands/instruction as seen in the insturction of this thread.
From the blackmart application I was able to install many useful applications - the Launcher application can replace the Kyobo "home" application, which is very useful.
I installed android market as well, but so far I have not been able to download and install applications. I think It might be a permission issue between kyobo software and the installed android market?
Hey Guys!
is there a way to root the kyobo via mikrosd?
thanks a lot
Joe
Hey Joe. I've seen you on this forum as well as The Digital Reader asking for help with the Kyobo rooting. I too am a beginner and I'm trying to build up the nerve to try it. Wish us both luck and I hope someone can share rooting-for-dummies with us.
@fatboy1976: rooting won't improve performance in itself. it makes the device better as you can install apps, but ofc the hardware is still the same.
@send2toonie: yes, sorry about that. it worked for me, but only thanks to other changes. it's hard to keep track :-/. i updated the original post with new instructions which should work properly.
@smb_gaiden: hah, excellent, i never tried that! original post updated.
@Joe84: it should be possible to root via microsd by creating an update.zip. i haven't gotten around to trying that yet, but maybe in future. for now this is as simple as it gets.

Hi,
Could you post the OS/processor version and driver name that got adb working for you. If you can also remember the keys pressed to put the Kyobo in the correct boot mode for adb, that would be nice too.
I have also managed to load apps on my Kyobo but that is without having su, Superuser, adb and Android Market working. The above info would be helpful in fixing that. Holding the volume down fir 10 seconds after pressing power on puts the Kyobo into fastboot mode. Adb requires a different mode and set of key presses. This is because there is a menu of boot options being displayed which can't be seen on the Mirasol screen. I suspect this is because of display settings within the boot.img but that is only a guess on my behalf.
Hello,
I have found this bug on the TF101 and I do have TF201 as well but its not a production model so i cant really test this 100%
If someone can test my root method. below i will paste.
This is a new root method.
This is a linux / OSX version only for now.
When you untar the file. Please make sure to edit the runme.sh it has a path for adb that you need to fix. Other then that it will work.
You just chmod 755 runme.sh and run it
http://www.mrcellphoneunlocker.com/V2/tf101_ics_root.tar.gz
Windows version of my exploit can be found at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1515470
Reserved for later
im pretty positive it won't work, seems they made a lil mistake on the rights on your system folder after the backup utility been used bro <- it does work
but still, can't wait for someone to actual test it, would be funny if it however would work.
after all nice catch so far

Thank you.
Want to know if it works on the TF201.
You need to run the backup util on an app installed (This util is found in the app draw)
then once the script runs. it will ask you to do the same backup again and it should reboot and you have root.
it works >.<
ok serious, i lol'ed very hard

Forget all these tethered to computer root methods..lmfao we need a simple apk root install method. root from prime itself. This would be easiest to implement and more people could root.

I'll certainly buy it if you do release it! I know a lot of people would be that much more comfortable with taking some control over their devices.
I recently got a new tablet, the Digiland DL701Q, after my last tablet, the Galaxy Tab 2, broke from a cracked screen. Its not a well known tablet, but it was $50, so I said what the hell, let me take it. I rooted my last tablet through specific instructions from a video, however I can't find any videos or even articles on how to root this anywhere. Since I have no expertise in this area, I was wondering if anyone can help me root my tablet. Any help at all would be appreciated, thanks.
I need to root this puppy also, so someone please help!
the custom version of Android they have does not run correctly with my web program I am using it for.

I just rooted the one I picked up, go here http://www.mgyun.com/en/getvroot Download that and let it install. Then turn on usb debugging on the tablet, connect it and let it install the misc stuff. Once root is clickable click it, Reboots and comes back up. Should be rooted but use a Chinese app. Download root checker to verify and on the pop up hit the right button. Once passes download supersu from market, open it to install hit the left option on the popup, click the check mark box and right button. Then do the restart supersu asks for, wait for a reboot and verify supersu can grant access with root checker.
Now if you get 3 Chinese apps two you can uninstall but the original one like supersu you can't. Download root browser from market got to system>app and look for irootsu.apk. (Also may have a SuperUser.apk Delete it as well) Long press and delete followed by enjoy I also played with the app they have so may have been where some apps came from you may find you don't have.

Thanks for the site, but didn't work... I just ended up with a bunch of Chinese apps and my antivirus giving alerts every 2 second that this was spyware. It worked flawlessly until I had to verify that it worked, which then root checker told me it didn't. I tried it three times, with and without my antivirus. It looked like a nice go, but got any other ideas? Any help would be appreciated. (BTW, yeah, I did get it at best buy. You too?)

Don't bother...
Don't bother, I went through all that as well. I disabled my antivirus, my firewall, let it download, run, and connect to my tablet, yet it still produced no result. The program said my device was rooted, however once I downloaded root checker it said that it wasn't... I even tried Kingo to no avail, (its the same auto-rooting thing but only made in America for Americans), and I have been looking anywhere to root this thing. I'm betting now that the only thing that'll work is an manual rooting process, however if anyone has any ideas I'd be glad to try them. Thanks.
Doesn't work ehh? Being a old dev that quit and hasn't posted here for awhile. I wouldn't come back to just post something to screw with you guys. It does work and here you go as I snapped these laying in bed. As I happened to be bored, remembered I had posted it here so decided to check back. It might detect as malware as I never scanned anything honestly as didn't care to. I guess if you guys can't figure it out I can unroot it and post screenshots with steps but really isn't that hard. But won't be till I actually get a chance to do so.
Also once you gain root with the non english app you have to install supersu as I had said previously.

Sorry for the large pics and iroot isn't the same as kingo btw :good: As just because is a one click solution doesn't mean that it uses the same exploit. Another thing the tablet isn't even actually locked if you want to root it via adb.
---------- Post added at 11:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:37 PM ----------
Just connected it to wifi and see it has a ota in which it blocked other root methods and removed root access via adb. So the above may not work if you took it as I haven't did it yet.
iroot works, even after the update. You need to give root permission in Chinese version of SU and you will be good to go. Install English version apps/uninstall all the Chinese and you're set. I didn't find any need to disable antivirus etc., just make sure your drivers are installed.
I'll give it another try, and just to be clear, here is what I should do: First, download the program, let it install the drivers. Let it do the rooting process and restart. Then I should install SuperSU and have it restart like it says to. After all that I should install and check the root using Root Checker? If it works I'll get back to you guys, I think I forgot to install SuperSU before using root checker.

Speaking of rooting after the update...Would anyone be able to post or PM me the FWUpgrade.apk/FWUpgrade.odex files from the system/apps folder? I moved those files from that folder on my device to prevent the update to prevent losing root, but then they accidentally got deleted (DOH!) from where I put them. If iroot does work on the DL701Q after the recent update, I'd like to get it on there and re-root, but I can't do it now with the updater files missing!
PM sent, no odex for those files. I am working on a quick guide to help with iroot and install of TWRP, including getting touch to work...

Protocol 9 said:
Go ahead and system/wireless update your tablet to 4.4.0/A86V_004.
Download SuperSU from the play store
Download/extract the iroot installer to your DESKTOP. iroot download page
Insure that you have all drivers installed, the automatic installs should suffice but you may need to boot into fastboot (hold volume down/power until menu comes up, use volume key to select fastboot and connect to pc), mode seperately in order to get the(M65XX) driver, if the iroot program doesn't automatically install.
Run iroot as Administrator, when complete, it will tell you in English that the you have root, however the SU toast notification will be in Chinese. Click the left icon to grant su permissions to continue. You may get a couple of Chinese apps that piggy back on the download, no worries, you can delete them later, they seem to be system cleaners/task managers.
Go ahead and back out of all of that and disconnect your tablet. Run you SuperSU app. Again the Chinese version may ask you to grant permission. Go ahead and click the left character in the notification to grant. Once SuperSU has permissions you are free to administer root privileges as you would on any other device.
Ok on to the tricky stuff, (well, hopefully not for you)
Again go ahead and download/extract this to your desktop. Easy Magic TWRP Installer for MTK devices w/ubifs
Connect your tablet to PC w/USB Debugging on.
Run the executable as Administrator. You will need to run this install MANUALLY in order to get the touch screen orientation correct the first time.
Download and copy the stock recovery from the link below somewhere on your pc.
Start the program and select NO for manual.
You will be prompted to place stock recovery in the STOCK folder, go ahead and copy it in there.stock recovery image
Follow the rest of the prompts, if the program does not detect your resolution it is; 1024X600.
You will be asked if you have a flipped screen, click YES
You will be asked if you have touch screen problems, click YES
You will then be presented with a selection of screen orientation options, click the radio button for Normal Screen Swap XY Flip Y
The program will then continue with the installation and boot into recovery (TWRP Touch). If everything is correct, you should have fully functional touchscreen functionality (although it seems upside down, buttons on left).
Use the stock recovery below for unpack/repack if you get into trouble and lose stock (English) recovery, (you won't effect the actual chinese stock recovery):
stock recovery image
Don't forget that this device has a reset button on the back which will assist you to boot up normally, should you run into problems. Best of luck.
If you feel that you have hosed up your recovery through any attempts, I will assist you in returning to stock, which can also be pushed by the TWRP installer. Please give credits/thanks to the great teams that created the iroot and Easy Magic installers. This is simply a guide I created none of the programs or content.

I really don't mean to be a nuisance, but this stupid thing still isn't working for me. I downloaded iroot, let it run, and at the end it said my device was rooted. I started up SuperSU, and it said something like the SU binary needs to be updated, and I let it update, only to have it say it failed. I don't get what I'm doing wrong, my tablet is up to date, my computer is up to date, I reinstalled iroot and supersu multiple times, and restarted everything like 5 times. Also, root checker says its not rooted, however it also says the system appears to be running very slow. Do any of you mind explaining the steps like you would to a five-year-old? I feel like an idiot not being able to do this.
Not at all, it took me several attempts to get this to work, wait for the actual Chinese SU notification to show up to approve, this seems to be hit an miss.

EvilPenguin42, first of all make sure you are downloading and using the PC version of iRoot (version 1.7.9 right now), not the one that you download as an apk and run straight from the tablet. The latter one does not work (it may say rooting succeeded but when you reboot you aren't rooted). Protocol 9's instructions might not have been clear about that distinction.
Note added for PC Version, thank you...
I'm using the PC version, I've tried the apk one as well to no avail, but does the SU notification comes up on your computer? Where am I supposed to see it? Also,do you mean I have to re-root it multiple times using the program? And probably should've asked this sooner, what does SU mean and the SU binary in SuperSU? I'm sorry for being an idiot, but I miss being able to use root privileges. Thanks in advance

Prerequisites:
Dirty Santa
ADB
HOW TO: (UPDATE COMING SOON...)
Follow DirtySanta all the way through step 3.5
Step 1: On Windows, double-click "RUNMEFIRST.bat, DO NOT CLOSE THE LOG WINDOW THAT OPENS, then double-click "Step1.bat"
On Linux,
./RUNMEFIRST.sh
Step 2: Open a Separate Terminal, then run
./Step1.sh
Step 3: Wait for shell prompt then.
run-as con
chmod 0777 /storage/emulated/0/*
This will not give you full root access!
Please comment if you're willing to help me out in getting root.

Download v20.zip
extract it
run "RUNMEFIRST.bat"
give it a second and then run STEP1.bat
wait and itll show up as a normal shell "$"
then type in "run-as con" without the quotes
then you will see "#"

Yeah but then the next line does nothing, by that I mean chmod 0777 /storage/emulated/0/*
Plus even if that works how do I get root?

Do you see the # symbol after you type run-as con
if so then i believe you have a temporary root shell.
by the way, the line after that is just giving elevated permissions to your entire internal storage, this part of the code does not apply to us as we do not need to give more permissions to anything on our internal storage as we will not be using them unlike the other several steps on that dirty santa post.
the problem is, even though we have a sort of root shell selinux is stopping us from being able to modify any of the other files.

What are you thinking to get full root from here?
Flash a modified boot img somehow that still let's the phone boot but gives us root even with the SElinux still set to enforcing. Go reading on the dirty cow thread and get caught up
Is this an option if I wanted to change my font or do something that required root? Would it survive past a reboot?

This is still exactly what you see when reading through the post. Please follow the main ROOT thread from Albine45 (patiently wait for Albine's frequent updates on progress) and when full root is achieved, you'll know and a guide will show up to walk you through. For now, you can change system fonts in your settings menu on Android. There are a few free built in fonts and others you can purchase. Just look through your settings menu.

Thank you so much. I'll definitely be watching for full root?
After I run "run-as con" package 'con' is unknown
Any solutions?
I only need to delete or rename /system/bin/logd it's giving me some troubles, battery drain and over heating.
