Honeycomb is designed differently from previous Android releases. The end result is that /data and /sdcard are actually on the same partition, and it's all ext4.
This is why the Tab doesn't support USB Mass Storage mode, and neither does any other Honeycomb device (except maybe ones that have an external removable SD card.)
But my galaxy tab 10.1 have two different partitions, one for data and one for mass memory and work well in usb mass storage, it's like my gs2 but with no sdcard.

You'll see that /data and /sdcard are exactly the same size and always have the same amount of free space - there's a reason for that.
And USB Mass Storage is completely unsupported by the tab (Except for attaching Mass Storage devices to the tab using the USB host dongle). MTP (which is what the Tab uses for file transfers) is NOT USB Mass Storage.
I always have the same question, what if I want to completely wipe out the sdcard partition?

Just saw this in the Engaget review;
While the One X and S offer options to use USB mass storage or MTP to transfer files, your choices are cut in half with Sprint's version -- MTP is all you have.
Who's got the skinny on this? I'm not familiar to how MTP works.

I actually prefer MTP. Here's more:
http://www.androidcentral.com/ics-feature-mtp-what-it-why-use-it-and-how-set-it
As it says, you can still to mass storage with the MicroSD.
It is pretty simple, though... I think I used it for my old Sansa e250 mp3 player (it gave you the option between the two systems).
The way I read engadget's words was like this:
The internal memory, can only be accessed through MTP.
The SDCARD on the other hand, can be accessed as a mass storage device.

Thanks for the link, it was helpful, and I can understand why they would want to go that route, but what I got from that link is that there's no difference, in practice for the end user, between the two. Meaning even with MTP, you plug it into your computer, and you can still access and move files around. Did I get that right? Does it open as another drive on the computer like USB mass storage does? In fact, would it open as two drives - one for the internal memory, and another for the sdcard?

I read it the same way, I was just hoping that I wouldn't be locked out of the internal memory, unless I used the phone itself (if that makes sense).
If the internal memory is going to be laid out in a similar way to my transformer, then one option is to use samba filesharing and set up the internal storage partition as a share. This is of course going to require root but as i understand it the issue with the one x (and maybe this one) is the bootloader unlock and not simple superuser permissions. I have my transformer set up where when its connected to my home wifi network both the internal storage and the microsd card is shared as samba shares and i just transfer files in to internal storage using that.

Dropbox comes pre-loaded on the phone. You can also sync with Google Drive or a similar service.

I'm not sure which ROM you are using (probably stock), but with my Venom Viper4G 3.14 ROM, I have USB mass storage for the following:
system: NO
sdcard: NO
sdcard2 (ext_sd): YES
However, I have to do 2 things:
1. Disable USB debugging
2. toggle USB File Sharing to Disk Drive (NOT HTC Sync Master)
It's my understanding that Jewel (the HTC Evo 4G LTE) does not allow for mounting system and sdcard(1). In contrast, my HTC One X allows for mounting both system and sdcard, and it does so with USB Debugging enabled. The One X also has a Charge Only mode, but Jewel cannot.

No USB Mass Storage on Galaxy S3. No USB Utilities like Galaxy S2. So file transfering a bit slow esp small file!

Thanks. That's a shame .
Does USB Debugging enable USB Mass Storage? I believe it does on Gingerbread. I've read reports it doesn't on ICS though.

It does not sadly.
Why there's no mass storage is beyond me. Hopefully a FW update (probably in early autumn) will fix it.

Unfortunately not. Google moved from UMS to MTP with Honeycomb because UMS locks out the storage to the phone when it's plugged into a computer.
I've never heard of this being an actual problem for anyone. You've only got it plugged in for a set period of time.
There's much more on it here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...behind-galaxy-nexus-lack-of-usb-mass-storage/
problem with usb storage
Hi, I went to setting, more, USB utilities, this is where my problem starts.
My phone say, "USB is connected. Remove the cable." but my phone isn't connected to the cable!
Any suggestions on what to do?
Thanks

If you are having a rooted phone, there are StickMount from chainfire, Alt Mounter and SGS3 easy UMS that will allow you to connect the android in Mass Storage Mode.
Can someone post a link for SGS3 easy UMS because download keeps failing from site and Google didn't help.

[APP] [v1.1] Mount external microSD card as USB mass storage
Stick Mounter has nothing to do with UMS.
Alt Mounter requires a helper service on the computer and can only provide FTP access, no real mass storage.
Here's what you can run on the Terminal (the Helper app only runs the commands for you; easier to use)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27282116&postcount=58
So has anyone actually tried SGS3 easy UMS? If it works will the host on my car stereo, tv etc recognise it and is there any system side effects I should know about.
If you don't trust the app (the commands really work =D ), get 'Gscript lite' in Google Play and add the corresponding parts as 2 different scripts which you then put on your homescreen for easy access.
That will do exactly the same for you.
Whether it works with car hifi etc depends on your devices. A user 'Siran' reported that his car-stereo took some time to recognize it and the playback had hiccups, but at least the last issue could be attributed to the SDcard not being unmounted in the phone before mounting it on the computer.
Currently the app uses the 'old method' while my script correctly mounts/unmounts to prevent such issues.
The side effect is the same as always; that particular card is not mounted and available in the phone as long as it's mounted as mass-storage on external devices. However that should not be a real issue. No negative side effects are known or likely to exist.

Well, isn't possible then to use it simultaneously from the phone and the usb? What does this app stand for then?
Multi Mount SD-Card and MountUSB Widget
It is, check the "--- BELOW ..." lines in my link.
However it WILL cause data corruption and data loss and might even cause the SDcard's filesystem to be damaged beyond repair.
What you do is use the same filesystem in 2 distinct locations which individually write on it.
To understand how that causes an issue, you'll have to get a basic understanding of a filesystem; they actually work like a science book.
You have an index listing all directories and files aswell as their relation to each other and where on the SDcard the file is stored.
Now if a file is modified the index is changed and then the file added, changed or deleted.
So far, so wel.
If you now mount it on 2 locations (mind you: filesystems don't know about that, so each location thinks it is the sole one accessing it) and work from 2 locations on the same data you have a rather high chance that one operating system will eventually overwrite or alter data without the other one knowing about it.
If the index is too damaged you'll not only loose some files but potentially all filenames and folders. Applications like Recuva can recover most of the files (at least usually) but it won't be pretty, easy and complete.
Simply don't do it. There is a reason why noone implements it
Just tried SGS3 easy UMS on my Tv and Dvd player through their host and worked fine with music, videos and images, and i'll check my car stereo tomorrow, so thanks d4fseeker.

You mean OTG (USB On the GO). I though it was for both OTG and MSC.
Last night, due to the wonders of MTP, it took me nearly 2 hours to transfer 2gb of data from my S2 over to the S3, with many popup interruptions delaying the transfer.
God I hate MTP's speed with many small files. But I guess it could be worse if they locked the filesystem down.
Well I love my DNA, love everything except the shortage of storage. I though heck, thats enough storage for me, boy was I wrong...lol
So my question for you guys, do you use the cloud to save excess data and/or can we use usb sticks/thumbdrives to hook up to our phones to gain extra access to data, like music and video data that takes so much room on the internal sdcards.
You can use an OTG (on the go) cable to connect a USB memory or even connect an SD card. Don't know if it works right out the box or if you need to be rooted, but it's possible.

Thanks man, that actually solves all my storage issues, thanks for taking the time to enlighten me.
I use usb otg helper to mount my micro sd card for additional storage. It also makes it easy to transfer files between phones/pcs. I can even back up directly to external sd via clockwork mod. Just mount it in recovery and then you can flash/restore/backup without having the files on your phone.
I use spotify for music, I purge my download folder every once in a while, and I only keep one nandroid backup at at time. I have no issues with storage.

For music you could use Google music, and use drive for your other stuff, such as files. Saves a lot of storage for me when you have over 1500 songs.

Is there anyway to mount the Galaxy S4's SD card as Mass Storage? I don't like using MTP, its too clumsy.
I've searched on Play and found a couple of apps that I thought would work, but didn't. I tried "SG USB Mass Storage Enabler" and "AL Mass Storage Manager", neither of them worked.
The developer of "SG USB Mass Storage Enabler" got it to work for the S3, Note 2, and the S4 for every carrier EXCEPT Verizon. -_-
I guess someone will eventually get it to work for Verizon, but does anyone know of an app or another method that works now?
I do have root, the SD card I'm trying to mount is Sandisk 32 GB.

Just curious, what's clumsy about it? It's functionally superior since the card remains mounted in Android. It is slower, but really, in terms of the steps you take to use it, there is no difference. You plug it in, it shows up in windows, you drag and drop files, you unplug. You may have to choose to exit installer mode depending on the ROM, but you also often have to choose to mount as usb storage as well.

Its slower, yes. This is one of many issues.
I have a lot of macs in my house (trust me I don't like it either) and jumping around from one to another is impossible without the additional software. Yes, I can download it, but I'd rather have the option not to. With the option to mount as Mass Storage, the S4 can play the role of a universal USB stick. It can connect to any computer, regardless of software.
Also, some basic programs (like a folder size freeware I have) will not work with my card unless I take it out of my S4 and insert it using its adapter. This is on windows 7.
I feel like you simply have more freedom with the option to mount as Mass Storage.
Bump
Any ideas at all???

I've heard a lot of desire for this option specifically for the Verizon S4!
I use a free application, Android File Transfer, to mount my S4 (including SD card) to my Mac, but Samsung Kies has to be uninstalled for it to work. I don't know of a solution for Windows.

MTP is a huge step backwards IMO from Mass Storage. It's just way too slow.
