Hi, i was trying to enable wifi portable hotspot on my rooted and unlocked i717, i was reading in the forums and some people were able to do it just uninstalling or freezing "tetheringmanager" with titanium backup, but i can't find that service listed in my device, instead of that i have "tethering provisions" but if i uninstall or freeze and then try to enable portable hotspot my screen goes black and there is an error saying "settings has crashed...".
is there any way to enable native tethering and portable wifi hot spot in the at&t galaxy note i717????
any help would be sooooo appreciated.
thank you so much for your time

nothing yet, i hope someone here can give me a light...i don't like to use 3rd party apps
I'm pretty sure you can't do it unless you flash a rom with free tethering enabled or use a 3rd party app

hey, i just found the solution!!!!!!!!!!
simply download "tethering widget" from the android market and turn on/off the hotspot option from there, you don't need to freeze or uninstall anything....that's all so easy and working great, my laptop is now on the web through my note
i hope this works for you too, please let me know

This should have its own post. That's awesome! No root required. As easy as downloading a 476kb apk off the play store. Thanks for that!
you are welcome!!!!!

+1 for DroidWall. It has the added benefit of blocking ads in a particular app if you decide to not allow it access to the network.
However, I should say that it doesn't EXACTLY do what you are asking. It allows you control as to what apps may or may not access the network, either via 3g, WiFi, or both. As far as I know, it doesn't tell you when one of the apps you allow access to the network actually does.
If you want something that asks you to allow/deny, try this
ps this was the 3rd result for android firewall, the first 2 being droid wall, just saying everything is out there google and you shall find.
Edit: well it seems twitter brought the company behind whispermonitor and thus all the downloads have disappeared, I will try to find an apk.
Edit2: it seems that whispermonitor only worked on the nexus S and one other phone, shame it looked promising.
Your best bet is droid wall, there is also Pdroid but it needs a rom patch.
Thank you
Will try your recommend solution

Well i did some more reading about it, and its more of a whole rom/rom mod than an apk file and it was only compatible with the nexus S and Desire I think.
Droidwall is your best bet.
Avast firewall do better than droidwall, it really alert you if any apps trying to make an connection on yhe the background, but avast is big app that come with antivirus protection which seems to be useless for android os so far.

I'll add AppTrafficFree https://market.android.com/details?id=net.ir.apptrafficfree
is the best to see which apps or games are wasting your data.

That app is great.
Thank you

This app is great but it would be nice if you can reset the counter so that we know what data we have used in a month or week.
THank You

Droidwall doesn't work on Samsung Galaxy S2. I use ICS v4.0.3 and it is rooted!
I try for example to block all app on 3G then played Angry birds and the adds are still there..I think this app waste my time!!
I stupidly unrooted and updated my GSII to official ICS update and lost the ability to use wifi tethering. Am I now gonna have to wait for someone to come along and create a rom for the new release that will allow a bypass of the tethering check or are there a couple simple lines in a file somewhere I can change.
Thanks for any info...as it stands, im now stuck working instead of watching netflix on my tethered GTab 10.1
UPDATE: I did some searching around and found that by deleting TetheringManager2.apk in system/app it should allow tethering to go through (I used Root Explorer to do it). Unfortunately, that doesnt seem to work. When I go to enable wifi tethering, the screen goes blank, everything stops responding for about 10 seconds and then it comes back saying settings has stopped responding. So...did I do it wrong or does it look like ATT changed something around with their ICS release?
Tethering is disable in stock ics. There is a gp app that will allow you to do so

This is a great wifi app, but you need to be rooted to use it.
wifi_tether_v3_1-beta14
I hope it's ok to make a topic about this... Been looking around without finding any duplicate posts. I should note that i had an older rezound that i rooted just fine on gb and it tethered fine.
This new one had ics before i rooted it, and i get issues with any tethering app i use; even barnacle, which was the one i used last time. Ill post the error message i get in a subsequent post, but i think it had to do with difficulties making an ad-hoc connection or something.
Anybody face this issue?

Use this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether
Go to settings in the app, set devuce profile to HTC rezound or Samsung galaxy nexus CDMA.
Change setup method to net D master, turn off encryption and scroll down and check to enable routing fix.
Delete the Verizon mobile hotspot app and the system app TetheringGuard.apk
be sure to grant superuser or supersu root access

Awesome, thank you for your post. I followed you up until the delete the verizon mobile hot spot app and the tetheringGuard.apk. What is the preferred way to do this? I have titanium backup pro (that i normally freeze my apps with, I know thats not the same) could i do it through there?

Don't worry about answering this. You can if you want. I just tried it from the point I was at and wifi tethering is now working. Thanks again man.
Amazing how the settings actually matter... I know I had tried this app already lol
Yeap its very picky with those settings, and titanium backup is exactly the app I use to uninstall those two apk's

Few carriers have blocked using hotspots and so they would have disabled it. You can install apps like Foxfi and use..

Not stock rooted, just stock. The mj4 .tar through ODIN. You can use kingofroot to get root back and you should have hotspot like everyone else.

I've used FoxFi in the past and it worked well until I got my Mega. I've heard that a fix is to boot into recovery and clear the cache partition but it is failing for me.

Stop the native WiFi tethering client running and use Mobile Hotspot from the play store. Use the one with the green droid peering at you from the bottom of the app icon. When settings fail just ignore.

No bueno. With that app I still get "Mobile hotspot is unavailable. To enable mobile hotspot on this device, go to att.com/mywireless or dial 611". And the little green dude spins forever when I click "Ok".

ok. No tension. I will try next only for you..
If you are on ATT, it comes with a Mobile Hotspot app....unless you turned it off.
Once you go in to the app, it will have to be configured and assigned a name. You will be given a password to use.
It works very well. I use my Mega as a hotspot for my wifi Tab 3. Just have to remember that while it's on, you will be using your data!
