Phone crashing, app to monitor? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
My SGS2 keeps crashing on me. It doesn't reboot, the screen stays off but the battery will drain right out if I leave it. I have to boot into download mode to restart the phone.
Is there an app I can use to monitor what might be causing the phone to crash?
Thanks

Can you please provide more information about your phone? What ROM are you on?
Anyways, if you can't turn on the screen, what's the use of an app?
Can you reboot into recovery?

Try re-flashing rom or kernel or trying new rom or kernel. If you get same issue on others then its likely a hardware issue.

I wanted an app that would log what was happening in the background before the crash to see if it was software related
. It happens on all ROMS so I am guessing I'm stuck with a hardware issue

If you had USB debugging enabled, you can check with adb... Dunno any other way to get a log.

Excuse my noobness, how would I obtain that log using ADB?

Telling you're a noob isn't a bad thing. Trying to remain a noob is. You will learn that to get the most out of your phone, you need to read, read, and if you don't understand, search before asking it. Just a tip
Anyways, if you have ADB set up (in case you haven't, search for tutorials, its easy), here is how to obtain a log using adb: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27754634

Can't sideload apps

Hey guys,
Is anyone else having problems sideloading apps on the Amaze, even with unknown sources checked? Every time I try to install anything, I can only click "cancel" and not "install". It's quite frustrating. Thanks.

Interesting.
What apps are you trying to install?
Perhaps they're corrupted?
Try an adb push.
adb push appname.apk /data/app/
You may have to reboot but that might do the trick.
You can also try an apk installer (or manager).
These apps aren't (gasp) protected are they?

Alright, so here's the deal. Did a factory data reset thinking that it wouldn't do anything and it fixed the issue. Weird...

Having this problem now...
I just did a wipe to install beast mod and I am getting it. Wanted to try out Extended controls. 4Shared it and I can cancel but not install.

Don't know if it'l let you push to /data* anyways, instead I would try:
Code:
adb install appname.apk
Having this problem now with stock ROM with latest update and no root. It started all of a sudden. Although rebooting fixes the problem, it does so temporarily. This is also affecting installs from the Amazon App Store. Any ideas?

I have this problem with Amazon apps. I haven't tried anything else from the Market.
Restarting my phone fixes this problem for me but after a day or two it does it again.
I am running completely out of the box stock.
So yeah you're not the only one having this problem.
Possible Solution
Found the solution to my problem. Apparently when it's enabled, the Screen Filter app was preventing the side loading of applications. When I disable Screen Filter, I can side load my apps and the Amazon App Store installs applications normally. I no longer have to reboot. Hope this helps.

That would explain why restarting the phone solved the problem, temporarily.
Until of course we all enabled "Screen Filter" again and then it would stop working.
Testing that now.
I have a similar problem when running Lux Auto Brightness.
Disable Lux, sideload the app, re-enable Lux.

This is actually because of the application "Screen filter"
It's actually a security measure build into Android. It's so an application cannot 'trick' you into installing malicious software. (ie. let's say screen filter was hacked to swap the cancel/install buttons.. to make "cancel" appear as "install" etc)
Basically any app that overlays the entire screen disables the install button from working, for added security.
Thread moved to Q&A.

Hope so. lol
I just started having this problem tonight.
I often sideload apps and never have a problem..
But tonight I just tried, and suddenly I can no longer click the "Install" button after scrolling through permissions.
I can click cancel fine to go back..
but Install button just won't click.
(and I have no "screen filter" app anywhere.)
Running stock 4.2.2 on my GNex.

[Q] Help - Detect App(s) randomly turning the screen on

As per the title I get a strange behavior with the screen randomly (every 30 mins) when in sleep mode.
It happens both with data and sync on and in flight mode.
I'm on the latest fw of my intl. S3, I had this issue since the beginning.
I'm rooted.
How can I detect what is causing it? Is there an app?
Tx for your help.

It happens both via 3G and Wifi (where my ICS Tablet does not have the issue).
More importantly it happens in flight mode.
Thanks but I think it is an app or an OS part.
So, is this the cause ??
Happens with me too, but I am unrooted to try this method.

I have not tried, but I don't think it is a network related issue as it happens also when in Flight mode (everything switched off).
Make sense?

I tried in the past with no luck.
Partial wakelocks gives to me a huge numbers of apps/services. I do not see the option to have "the last one that caused the screen to go on".
Can you help me to narrow the search?
Help me!!
Am I the only with this issue???
It happened to me tonight, but I have never noticed it until now.
If u got the official Facebook app installed, then uninstall it and see what happens.
Otherwise uninstall your apps 1 by 1, untill u find the rouge app.this caused by an app

I'll give it a try.
To do it all my 100++apps would be crazy time consuming, I'll live with the bug!

I had the exact same issue, and the same question a day or two ago.
I did what a previous user stated, I traced back my steps and uninstalled the latest apps I had installed and then installed one by one and found the one causing the problem. Unfortunately I cannot remember which app it was for me, but it can be any one of them.
Guess there must be a way to log all current system activity to a file and once it happens, check the log?

The problem with the "bug" in this case is that it drains battery power unnecessarily

The screen flash twice or 3 times every 30 mins, for a couple of seconds.
It is a drain, but I don't think a huge one.

[Q] SIII CM10.1 Nightly Flashlight Problem

Samsung GSIII Version GT-19300
CM10.1 - Nightly 20130610
My torch/flash light is permanently on. Switching it on via the app makes it dimmer and then it goes to high brightness when toggled. I have managed to turn it off by toggling the app a number of times, but it always switches on again.
I cant see any services that could be causing this to happen.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I think some app of yours is misbehaving... If you don't know which app it is then the only way is to do a full data wipe and adding apps one by one..
Maybe you can look at the logs after your torchlight switches on..

I did a full reset and re installed cyanogen mod using clockwork mod. But the problem persists.
Im beginning to think it could be a hardware issue.. It stays on even if i just boot into recovery mode, or when the samsung logo appears on startup.
Is this possible?

There might be a problem with your hardware which causes freezing but I don't think so..
Check if you have any misbehaving app installed or you can reflash your firmware and do factory reset and then use your phone like normal.. Check for any freezing but restore no app. If you don't encounter any freezing then there must be a nasty app, doing nasty stuff with your phone.

Stock ROM - Phone is always slow, it freezes sometimes. Any solution for this?

Hi,
I already installed a custom ROM in my S3 but after noticing that it was slow I unrooted and came back to the stock ROM. The problem is that the phone is always slow.
For example, when I turn wifi on, sometimes it takes 10 minutes to show me the emails and in general to show me all notifications that it has to show.
When I click the browser, it's also slow to show the keyboard for example.
This kind of behaviour is the same all over the phone.
My question is if someone knows what is going on and what can be done and if there's some way to know what's happening in the background. Maybe it's some app that I have installed?
Any help would be appreciate. Thanks.
Have you installed apps that control startups, wakelocks or claim to make your device run better?
If so, undo the lot.

Hi, thanks for your help.
I don't think I have those kind of apps but I uninstalled some that I have and noticed that the phone is faster. So maybe it was some app that was causing that.
It would be great to check the system itself, how it's running. Is there a way to do it?
System monitor or perfmon.
