This will be my first time to root, all I know is you use odin and when you root you can do alot more things with you device, such as overclocking and having custom ROMS. Im worried I will damage my phone/brick it, im already running XXELL4 unbranded 4.1.2.
This website shows how to root with the same firmware as I have, would I be okay if I follow this? android.gs/update-galaxy-s3-official-jelly-bean-4-1-2-xxell4-premium-suite/
To root use the chain fire method, boot into download mode, and flash through your pc. You are rooted and have custom recovery installed.
Nothing is wiped
Device won't brick as long as you flash the correct files
Your device won't be upgraded in terms of ROM, modem etc
You can now follow the guide on the website.
Helps?
Before rooting I recommend backing up your media to PC, syncing contacts with Google if they're not on sim card.
When rooted make a nan droid and have a copy on PC/extSD just in case.

Yeah all I want to do is root and overclock, im not really bothered about custom roms and that
Use chainfires root method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Breakdown:
-Install Odin
-Boot device into download mode (hold vol down+home+power) and proceed (volume up)
-USB to PC
-Open Odin, if [COM:13] for example shows your device is visible, if not install Kies from Samsung for drivers and reboot pc
- check Auto Reboot and F reset time !ONLY!
-click PDA and select the CF-Root file (.tar extension after extracting .zip)
-start
-7 seconds later 'PASS' you are rooted, recovery installed
-Safe to remove USB now
For overclocking rights:
-Boot phone like normal paste a kernel zip that supports overclocking I.e siyah kernel v1.8.6 (Google for Gokhan's site)
-Boot into recovery volume up+home+power
-Install zip > select the zip location. Done. Reboot
-Install app (ie SetCPU, Nofrills) which allows over clocking. Remember to grant root access.
Safe over clock up to 1.6/1.7ghz.

Getting rid of that pesky warning triangle during boot
It is definitely possible to remove that pesky warning triangle during boot when running a custom kernel, though you should be well aware that this method does NOT reset the custom kernel flash counter. The steps are not complicated, but they aren't easy either, so read well.
(1) Make sure you have CF-Root flashed (see the first post). You must have the "CWM Manager" app available.
(2) Make sure you have the same version of CF-Root extracted until you have the zImage file. (ZIP --> extract --> TAR --> extract --> zImage).
(3) Push the zImage file to /sdcard . It must still be called zImage !
(4) Find an original Samsung signed stock kernel (preferably from the same stock firmware you have, but it's not terribly important)
(5) Reboot into download mode (adb reboot download, or boot the device with home and volume-down pressed)
(6) Fire up ODIN, and flash the Samsung kernel
(7) Boot the device with the stock kernel. CWM Manager will still be available.
(8) Start CWM Manager, select Flash Kernel, and select the zImage from CF-Root you previously put on your SD-card. The kernel will flash and the device will reboot.
(9) You will now notice you no longer have the warning triangle during boot, but you are actually running CF-Root with all it's goodies!
(10) In the future, if you only use the Flash Kernel option inside CWM Manager instead of ODIN, the triangle will not return, neither will your flash counter increase. But keep in mind, that CWM Manager can only handle a direct "zImage" if you are NOT running a kernel with full busybox support (this is currently needed for flashing kernels out of .TAR and .ZIP files)
i follow all steps one by one
after (7) step boots without yellow triangle so i dont need to follow 8-9-10??
what i need to do? thank u
i went to step 8,if u dont follow instructions root not working, sorry for my silly question..
delete plz

This method is good alternative if you don't have a JIG . But why bother with these steps, JIG is super cheap buy it and save your self alot of time.
JIG will reset counter and remove triangle on any kernel.

Its easy you turn phone off, then connect JIG and wait , in about 3 to 5 seconds phone will enter Download mode ( Triangle will be removed and Flash counter reset), once in download mode disconnect JIG and then press and hold power button to turn off phone and back on. Or you can also remove battery and reinsert.
Hi, I just rooted my SGS2, and now I want to flash MIUI Rom. I have a couple of questions.
1. Do I NEED a micro SD card to do this.
2. Is is safe to download Rom Manager and flash Clockwork mod?
Search is your friend.
you could have just answered my question.
Anyone just want to verify if it's safe for me to flash CWM from Rom Manager app?
I happen to be on KH3 if that matters. (flashed KH3 before rooting) used DooMLorDs script to root.
1. no, you copy the rom to the phones internal memory
2. no, flash a cf-root kernel

If I've already rooted using DoomLords exploit is is okay to flash Cf-Root over that?
Also, how come every bit of research says that I can't flash a rom from internal storage - but you say I can? Don't I have to Wipe Data/etc? Wouldn't that delete anything on the internal storage.
You can use your usb internal storage to flash a rom.
Also, note that cf-root recovery is not the original cwm recovery. It's modified.
You can flash any other kernel with cwm recovery if you want. (codeworkx/siyah/ninphetamine/speedmod, etc)
And, ROM manager flashing cwm is actually fake. Our GS2 can get cwm recovery only by flashing a kernel that has cwm.

The 16gb's of memory on the phone is basically split into two parts, around 3gb's or so is used/available for the os while the rest 12gb is available to you to do as you wish, that's where you're copying the files to.
If you do a wipe from cwm it only deletes the files from the 3gb section while leaving the 12gb portion intact.
If you install titanium backup you'll see this info at the bottom in the overview section, you'll see the system rom/internal/sdcard partitions.
Okay let's do this!
You said you had a rooted device, so here's all the steps:
1. FLASH A KERNEL THAT IS CAPABLE OF HAVING A CWM RECOVERY, e.g. Ninphetamine
2. Go to Market and download ROM manager
3. Launch ROM manager and then click Flash Recovery, I suggest twice just in case
4. From this website, download MIUI for your device: http://miuiandroid.com/roms/miui-development-roms/
5. After you finish downloading, make sure you have your device in Debugging mode in Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Debugging Mode, plug your device in, and drag down the notification bar, click on the USB popup, and click Connect.
6. Drag the file into the internal SD card (should have files and folders like update.zip, gameloft, android, etc), then unplug the device.
7. Power down the device and then use the button combo: Power + Vol Up + Home to enter recovery, if it fails to enter CWM Recovery, power down and try again.
8. Click Wipe Data, Wipe Cache and Wipe Dalvik Cache (this is in Advanced) after that, click on the power button to go back a menu
8. Click Install .zip from sdcard and then navigate to the .zip file you placed in your internal sdcard
9. I suggest installing it twice just to be sure.
Hope this helps
If you haven't rooted, just use odin to flash a rooted kernel (like cf-root, ninphetamine, Siyahkernel, speedmod, etc). Most of them come with cwm, where you can flash any other rooted kernel as you desire (in recovery mode or through the CWM app).
If you've already rooted but the kernel you root your phone with doesn't come with cwm, do the same as above.
ROM manager doesn't work with most of the kernels (ie. Read the cf-root kernel thread). But you can download the CWM app - search (works on cyanogenmod though). Most custom rom will come with it. What it does is to allow you to boot into cwm recovery mode to flash things.
It's all safe. Should anything go wrong, just boot into download mode and follow the first step again.
The "root" is actually part of a kernel hence "rooted kernel". So when people say you won't lose your root when you flash other roms/kernels is because you essentially flash another rooted kernel over your already-rooted kernel.
CWM recovery mode comes with most kernels. This is why when you flash different kernels you'll get the different cwm recovery version that comes with the different kernels.

Hello,
I recently switched from HTC Incredible S to the widespread Samsung Galaxy S2. I am very happy with it but I can't wait to flash custom ROMs. Now I have looked for the best root method and I got confused among the plenty of methods available...I opened this thread to understand wich is the best root method (and if it is possible than to unroot in case I would send phone back to samsung for support).
My I-9100 has a stock ICS 4.0.3, baseband I9100XXLPX, kernel version 3.0.15-I9100XWLPF-CL592261 and build number IML74K.XWLPF.

Much easy way to root which doesn't give any ****ty triangles or change any firmwares etc. Search the boards its uses CWM. You effectively load up the recovery console then from there load the cwm recovery then root. Other than superuser and su settings etc nothing is installed cause you only load the cwm recovery and not overwrite the existing.

The kernel will is safe to use, but when flashing there is always a chance of bricking, just to make sure you get the right one here is the link to the kernel you need.
http://d-h.st/users/siyah/s3
The one that has CWM in the name is a zip file to flash in recovery mode, go to install zip from sd card, then choose zip from sd card and browse to the folder you saved it in and select the zip and scroll to yes then reboot.
The .tar file is to flash in Odin, add the file to PDA, enter download mode and connect the phone to the pc via usb, then click start sit back and your phone will reboot automatically.
Make sure repartition is NOT checked in Odin.
To check the kernel go to settings, about device and check kernel version.
Well I have already rooted in odin so do I just download this kernel on my phone, the go to recovery mode and apply the kernel and thats it? Or have I got to do more than just rooting and aplyimg the kernel?

Did you root using CF Root or CF auto root? Auto root doesn't use clockworkmod, if you used auto root you will need to use the .tar or flash clockwork mod via rom manager (available in the play store.)
Appart from that just install the kernel.
I used cf auto root in odin, could you write down the steps I will need to go through to apply this kernel so I can overclock, im fairly new to this so I get confused very easily lol

Through CWM, this will not increase your binary counter however in the latest bootloader booting to custom recover sets it to 1.
Download the .zip file and save it to your internal sd card (less chance of failure)
Download rom manager from the play store
Open rom manager and select "flash clockworkmod recovery"
Confirm your phone model
Follow any other on screen instructions
Then when it's flashed switch your phone off
Hold Vol up, home and power button to boot to recovery
Select install zip from sd card
Select choose zip from sd (something similar)
Select the zip file, then scroll to "yes"
Wait for it to flash and reboot
Through Odin (this will increase your binary counter.)
Download the .tar version
Open Odin
Click the PDA button
Select the .tar file you downloaded
Put your phone in download mode (Vol down, home and power)
Connect your phone to your PC
Ensure repartition is NOT selected
Click start and wait for the phone to reboot
Then check the kernel version in settings, about device.

Do I have to do both of these or just one?
Sorry I post so much, as its my first time rooting im just worried about messing up my phone, so I have rooted my 4.1.2 and to apply this kernel is it best to do it through mobile odin, pc odin or through recovery on my phone?
Another question is that when you say internal sd, is that the normal memory inside the phone or a micro sd card?
I downloaded the CWM Zip file and flashed via CWM recovery 6.0.2.7 touch.
Internal sd means normal memory inside the phone.
Okay so ive downloaded the siyah 1.8.6 zip, and ive also downloaded rom manager, should I just go straight into rom manager and apply this kernel or is there something else I have to do?
Also what is a binary and flash count.
Im new to this so im learning
Also where it says 'flash clockworkmod recovery' I have to have clockworkmod installed, how do I know if I have it or not?

You don't need clockworkmod intalled to flash it, just tap flash clockworkmod and it should flash it.
Then boot to recovery to install the siyah zip file.
The flash counter (or binary counter) is a value in the bootloader that changes whenever something unofficial is flashed through Odin whether it's root, rom, recovery, kernel anything. Samsung have used it for awhile to stop people who have used custom firmware just flashing a stock rom then getting a warranty service, There are however ways to reset the flash counter to claim a warranty service if needed.
Okay I will give this a go thank you, when I downloaded the siyah im not sure where it would have went to, where would be the normal place it would have downloaded to?

To get a custom recovery and be able to flash custom roms (cm obviously included), all u need to do is flash a kernel for our phone model as all our kernels have recovery built in. Just find a siyah.tar file (gokhanmoral has some on his site in .Tar format), download it to your computer, then find a rom you want to flash and download it to your phone. Make sure you have Odin installed on your computer, and the correct drivers installed for your phone. Also make sure usb debugging is turned on on the phone. Put the phone into download mode, open Odin on pc, plug phone into pc, open the pda link in Odin, select the siyah file, and flash that puppy. Then when done, disconnect from pc, reboot phone to your new recovery, and wipe data / factory reset. Then flash your rom!

Odin only works with Windows pc's, so on Mac you'll need to use Heimdall. Probably the Heimdall command line version is best. You can download the firmware of choice to your computer, and then transfer it to the phone over USB, or use dropbox and wifi, or something like that. You can download it directly to the phone if you prefer.
The guide referenced by Vpr2006 has instructions for using Heimdall as well as Odin. It give you the basics. In general you should 1) root 2) install custom kernel 3) use ClockworkMod Recovery to install your firmware of choice.

This approach to customizing your phone involves the following steps:
JANUARY 2013 ROOTING UPDATE: In mid December of 2012, Samsung released an over-the-air update for the SGH-I777UCLK3, taking the operating system to version 4.0.4. Around the same time, XDA developer Chainfire released an application called ExynosAbuse APK which can be used to root the SGH-I777 with SuperSU, without the need to use a PC. ExynosAbuse APK is the best, and probably the only practical method for rooting UCLK3 without flashing some other distribution. In addition, it seems that this application is a good way to root any phone running 4.x operating systems, and possibly phones running 2.x operating systems as well. Be aware, there are possible risks involved with using this application. Please thoroughly read and understand Chainfire's thread linked above before using his application.

I do not seem to see specific instructions as to how to go about this though, and I don't think it specifies how to install CM9 specifically.
Also, I have a mac, but I can access a PC if need be.
Thanks

I am quite unfamiliar with what to do on a step by step basis.
I looked at the thread Vpr2006 posted an saw this:

If you don't feel comfortable using the ExynosAbuse Exploit by Chainfire to get root access on your existing firmware, then flash the [Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root which is 4.0.3 ICS with root included.
Once you have root, use the instructions in that thread to install a custom kernel which contains ClockworkMod Recovery, preferably by installing Mobile Odin Lite or Mobile Odin Pro. I would suggest you use the "AJ Newkirk/Siyah v3.3.3d ICS" kernel, which is somewhat old but will only be on there long enough for you to flash your firmware of choice. Then enter recovery and flash your firmware, following the instructions in the OP of the firmware thread. As previously stated, you will need to use Heimdall on the Mac, or borrow a Windows PC and use Odin.
