Battery suddenly drops to zero when is low, shuting down the phone - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I everyone i hope u all started this 2013 very well.
I have a problem whit my almost two months old galaxy S2, when i get the "15% low battery warning" the brightness of the screen gets crazy and the phone suddenly shuts down dropping sometimes that 15% left of battery (sometimes more some less) what could be the problem? Do i need a new battery? Should i go to warranty?
Thanks in advance for reading this
Here is a screenshot of a not so agressive drop but describes the problem.

Just charge your phone untill 100%, then shut it down. Remove your battery for about a minute, put it back in and turn on your phone again.
If you're on a rom with Siyah kernel, you can even reset your battery chip through STweaks.
Let us know if it worked.

May be a kernel bug..try wiping battery stats in recovery and give it sometime to settle down. I used to get this error sometimes...Hope this helps!

10 hours? that 3g is really killing you there.
no setcpu? always drops dead below 15%?

I don't want to start a new thread, so I am going to write my problem here. And @OP sorry for using your thread^^
I am facing a similar problem right now, while I am on 40~50 % of battery, the screen blinks fast an the phone shuts down. Sometimes I should just turn it on and all is good and sometimes I must plug in the charger. It happened on both a custom ROM and a stock ROM. Is my battery dying? It doesn't seem to be a software issue though...
I appreciate any help

Check with betterbatterystats to see what's happening when the drop takes place.
To tell you the truth it does sound like a faulty chip issue.

Yes below 15%, im using stock frequencies. I think the problem is 3G + Overheat.
Fuel gauge chip reset. But the problem is still there take a look

Man, that is just nasty.
3g is a BH when it comes to battery. Have you set a SetCpu governor when bat goes below 15%? I did, and it would shut down my device.

I have the same exact problem as yours. I tried a new battery , same thing.
If you solve it, please tell us how?

Chavito, what ever happened to your device?
They went for it and gave you a new one?

Dude I have exactly the same problem, and this anonying issue has costed me months of trying without any improvement. But glad to see there's other people having this issue, which means it may be due to some common reasons. One thing I would like to ask you is whether or not your battery level drops to 0% ~ 15% after it is shut down automatically with battery level indicated as 50%? If so then we have the same issue.

You may need to calibrate the battery as this really should not be happening, it will always drop a bit after rebooting but not too much.

You can safely ignore this incorrect advice.
If you notice a sudden drop like that, just forget about it and carry on enjoying your phone. You'll then notice a gradual increase in reported battery level.
Just switch off your mobile...and take off the battery for 5 min and put it back...and reboot...this is what i have done...when it has sleep issues...and...the problems gone...

I'd just like to say you're both right. Calibrating your battery will help, but if this does happen again just ignore it. Your battery level will go back up. Just find the nearest iFan and tell them your phone charges itself

I'd love to hear how you calibrated your battery, considering such a thing is not possible on this phone.
Oh, and so you know, if you're going to post incorrect information, of course I'm going to correct you (that's not trolling btw). So what if we've bumped into each other twice in two days, if you're going to post nonsense like this, of course I'm going to respond

No, what you are saying is not correct. If you think you are correct, please show me the interface in the fuel gauge driver that is used to load history data into the fuel gauge chip.
I guarantee you that you will not find any such interface.
Our fuel gauge (MAX17042) does NOT need calibration - see the datasheet for its predecessor, the MAX17040. While the 17042 has some features that, if enabled, could require calibration cycles, these features are NOT enabled in any Gingerbread kernel, and at least one person received correspondence from Samsung that the GS2 does not even have the required hardware support for these extended features.
http://www.maxim-ic.com/datasheet/index.mvp/id/6621
"Unlike traditional fuel gauges, the ModelGauge algorithm eliminates the need for battery relearn cycles and an external current-sense resistor"
There is no need to EVER perform any sort of battery calibration technique on our fuel gauge, other than this simple technique:
WAIT - your state of charge estimate will converge towards truth over time if anything throws it off. Rebooting on low battery is one of the few known cases where the estimate gets thrown off temporarily, and the tradeoff for having this one corner case is that we never need to calibrate our fuel gauge.
Edit: FYI, if you want to be pedantic - I am fully aware that the MAX17042 functionality is built into the MAX8997, just like the MAX17040 functionality of the Galaxy S series was built into the MAX8998. However it's well documented that this built-in function is identical to standalone 17040/17042 ICs.
bad news i'm affraid..
Hello chiefs,
I'm affraid i have some bad news for the OP and others who are facing this issue.
I had it as well (and still do from what the looks of it) and it got so bad eventually that i had to send it to the shop. they replaced the headset (donno what that has to do with anything) and it has worked for a while, until tonight. i have no clue what's going on but if this keeps up i'm gonna see if i can replace this for another phone. it's getting really annoying up in hea'..
Just my two cents..
This is another bothering issue that I find with GS2.
I would rather have a phone that needs callibration instead of a phone that doesn't but that shows "false" information regarding the battery charge.
greatly improved battery life with ICS
I updated to the leaked Samsung ICS LPH ROM and got as much as 21 hours of battery life! So give it a try or wait till Samsung officially releases ICS on 15the March.
I've searched everywhere and it seems there is no real fix for this. WTF.
And the most annoying thing is that when I'm below 15% (which I'm NOT), it won't let me use the stock camera app. Ugh.

Cant get more than 2 hours screen time, but can can get 12hours standby.

Anyone have any ideas what to look for? I dont think I have a battery drain because with the screen off I lose about .5-1% every hour or so. But when im using the phone, the battery seems to drain very fast. The most screen time I have gotten is 2hrs, and its usually less than that.
Brightness does not seem to matter, I always have auto off and have tried brightness at 20%, 30%, 50% and 60%.
Use this application to locate Battery Drain https://play.google.com/store/apps/...mNvbS5XYXphQmUuYW5kcm9pZC5CYXR0ZXJ5RHJhaW4iXQ..
Update to the latest firmware or put a custom ROM.
The problem has been resolved. I had also a fast drain battery.
I even had the screen On during the night.
When I closed the eyes it was Off, but in the morning at my wake up it was On
Thanks I'll try the battery drain app.

The battery of my SG3 drains so fast I'm evne thinking of returning it (bought it yesterday). It can't be normal, it's almost like my old iPhone 3G. It goes like 1% per minute or so while browsing.
Did this fix and disabled WiFi, no luck.
Gonna try that app and see if it helps.
I think mine is like that as well. Maybe 1% minute when using heavily. Also thinking selling it. Can't return, bought on Craig list.
Very strange behavior. Something must be wrong with your soft or hardware because this is smartphone with the best battery (except razr maxx).

I am experiencing the same thing since i flashed omega rom v13. i was getting 5/5.5 hours of screen time on stock Samsung rom before i flashed. Right now the battery drains 1% every 2mins when the screen is on :/ (brightness has alwsys been around 20/30%)
Only thing that has changed since i flashed is the fact that i had wifi off during sleep on stock but now its always on. I have tried setting it to always off but it automatically switches to always on everytime i do it for some reason.

I believe this is normal with new devices. It takes time before Li-Ion batteries "adjust".
Flashed my phone to another rom, JB 4.1.1 and it's the same. So no, it's not software issue. Hardware? I don't think so... the phone is new and works just fine. The problem is the battery that it's new, or maybe is damaged... who knows (probably not).
I have the same problem. I see people post threads the battery, that lasts 2 days !
I'm thinking of buying a new battery, just to check if it is a battery thing, if the battery is ****ed up or something... The Galaxy S3, should last for atleast one day! and I can't get even that! is there a fix for that? I can post my battery use from the settings if necessary.
There are loads of threads about battery drain, a lot of it relates to Samsung bloatware and background services like face awake etc, you just need to explore your phone, learn how to use it, and see it up properly.....it is not an iPhone...it requires independent thinking skills
I'm experiencing the same problem on CM9.1. Try draining the battery fully twice. That'll calibrate it and improve battery life.

Since two days, I'have the same problem.
Before Wednesday, I'haven't issue about battery drain. My phone battery worked more than 2 days idle with about 4hours screen ON and 1 hour voice calls.
But now, it works fine between 100% and 60% and then, battery drain starts. Just a few hours for the phone to indicate that it's remain 5% of power.
Do you think they are a background daemon running sometimes (why since two days?) ? Or it's a network problem ?
I'll try to wipe my battery stats and fully charge the battery.
Currently, my SGS3 International works with the latest UK firmware : PDA/XXBLG8 - MODEM/XXBLH1

Serious battery drain since calibrating battery, android os drain. Please help

I was always happy with my battery, but always wanted to find ways to improve it. I installed foxhound use black wallpaper and battery was even better after this, until...
I read about recalibrating your battery after installing custom ROMs and decided to try "Battery Calibration" App by NeMa.
Today for the first time ever my battery died whilst I was at work, I actually though my phone had broke as I was fully charged this morning and had rarely used my phone. My phone is on charge now and I'm trying to fix this huge battery drain, according to the battery settings the Android OS has drained 71% of the battery, that can't be right can it?
BTW I'm using and have always used stock kernel.

I didn't know this, and I assumed that people who make these app's or post about these know a little something about it, I've obviously received some bad advice on various threads.
So how can I fix this now? Judging by your post, I simply just using the phone for a week or so and it will fix itself?

There was no such problems from the time I installed this ROM(the day it was released). What caused this battery drain? I would have used one of the battery calibrator apps and seen but I have read that those apps only wipe the battery stats, which according to me wont make any difference.
And now this sudden rise in the battery level while charging.

I have got this problem a few times with different ROMs, I couldn't figure out what was the cause, but only after flashing the Stock SE ICS ROM and kernel, this problem gets solved. But it keeps reoccurring sometimes and it's really annoying as I have to re-flash/re-install everything as I can't do with a phone that shows '30% battery' and in a sec '1% battery remaining, I've ****ed up things for you, Mwahahahahaha'..
Right now I'm flashing back stock ICS, but if this does reoccur, I do not want to be reflashing stock again, so I would really appreciate if anyone can pin point the cause of this strange problem and also a solution for it without reflashing stock.
Edit: : I forgot to take a SS of it, but the battery rises on its own too without I charging it sometimes.
Thank you!

Might be your battery need a replacement. Once i also had this problem but in your case u stated the problem solve when using stock rom. I wonder if the battery or the custom rom is the real culprit.
I also have this problem. The battery meter suddently arise even not charging and suddently drop from 30 to total blackout in an instant.
Then i check the battery and notice a bump. I notice my battery is swelling. So i bough a brand new ep500 and problem solve.

I think it has some calibrating script or something else.

[Solved] Battery half way, S2 shuts down

I was wondering if someone can tell me why my S2 is shutting down all the time.
A few weeks ago the following started happening. If I use my phone intensively like for an hour or so it just shuts down. When I try to restart it, it says the battery is almost empty. Even though it showed it had at least 50% juice before the shutdown.
The funny part is that if I don't use my phone a lot (only a few calls) it lasts about 2 days and the battery goes down towards 0% as expected. And when I use it intensively again, it shuts down.
So before blaming the battery and buying a new one I was wondering if something else can be the cause and I need to send it back to Samsung.
I was using cm10.1 until 2 days ago. I'm running stock now and the same issue is still there.
Re: Battery half way, S2 shuts down
Check whether or not the battery is loose in the slot. If it is then stick a paper to tighten it.
Other reason could be your battery cell is damaged. It cannot hold the current when some activity like wifi or processor is running.
I had faced not exactly the same but something similar to this only.
Replaced the battery and all okay now.

I had the exact same problem as you, phone would have about 50-60% battery, and after using it for a bit it would power off, and when it rebooted it had like 5% battery. I bought a new 2000mah battery and it fixed the problem.
