Need battery saving tips for stweaks running perseus kernel - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I would like some tips and guidance on how to use stweaks to sin serve battery and my phone to run efficiently at the same time.
I have spent a few hours going through the forums and reading some material on this topic but have not found a noob guide to stweaks to make it work comfortably.
I have read the post for siyah kernel stweaks settings but hard to understand without screen shots and or simplified guide.
Any help is kindly appreciated.
Thanks again.

Btw, I'm running Ultimarom 7.2.3,perseus kernel, 4.1.2, i9300-T.
Get an average of 8-9 hours of usage. Mostly use Internet for browsing, texts, minimal video watching and hardly play games.

[Q] Youtube video online streaming

Guys, i observed that when i play HD videos using youtube app or mobile version on the browser and usually if it's a long video it somewhat stutters.. Am i the only one experiencing this?
I am running on Hyperdroid 1.1.1 with stock kernel (the kernel that came with the custom ROM)..
Don't know if this has been asked before so please just leave your experience and no trolling or flaming etc..

It's 3am in the morning here and i need to sleep.. Will be back after a few hours.. For those who will answer you will receive my thanks and if there is a way to fix this you may share it as well.. Cheers!!!
P.S- Stuttering only happens when the video is HD and it doesnt appear to stutter if the video is not HD..

I've also noticed it but can't remember when I first started to see it. Would be good if someone more skilled could shed some light on the issue as its really distracting once you notice it.
Surely it can't be the phone itself as there are plenty of older phones capable of playing youtube vids just fine.
Stock KI8 BTW.
I'll just bump this thread so everyone can see it..

I have the same problem, posted in many forums about, but no one gives a solution for that. For me this problem is present since update from 2.3.3 above, and no rom, kernel or anything, solve that till now! Its a real shame that such a problem stayin undiscused, and doesn't get a proper atention!

I'm using Speedmod Kernel K2-18 test2 now, this is the only kernel, that gives me smooth playback of HD videos on Youtube. I don't know why, but guess something releated to the governor or scagualer. Try this kernel.

Best rom for gaming.

Looking for the best rom for gaming.
Been playing nova 3, 69p at the moment.
And real racing 2.
Both games lag at times.
Can anyone recommend a rom and kernel combo which they find works very well, Im looking for the best.
I'm currently on foxhound 1.4.4, using siyah kernel, the rom itself is the best I've used, however when gaming on the said two games I get lag.
Any help, pointers or suggestions is appreciated.
Cheers.

Really? What games have you played on that rom? Any of the two that i mentioned?
thanks for replying.
It doesn't really matter, most tw roms are the same anyway except for a few cosmetic changes.
What you need is to overclock your gpu when playing graphics intensive games, siyah will let you oc the gpu up to 700mhz and still be stable (it goes up to 800 but it's not stable)

If you NEED to overclock one of the most powerful GPU's for mobile devices around, then there is definitively something wrong with your game...
well dead trigger runs really well, even with tegra 3 graphics switched on, now i know that real racing isn't optimized very well and i've only just played nova 3 this once, but surely it should work well on the S3, and fyi, theres nothing wrong with my device m8, i've tried this on about 4 different s3's and all yield the same results.
The games are all paid for versions too.
Maybe i'm not ocing the GPU, i hadn't touched it but will check it out.
Cheers.
What are you using to OC your gpu?
thanks.

I agree completely, mine is at 440mhz and I have no problem with any games I play (gtaIII asphalt mini motors etc) but I do know that some games are very badly optimised and need an extra bit of grunt to get them to run smoothly.

Been using hypergalaxy n so far games are not lagging..not oc at all
stock rom is good enough for all the hd games. Nova 3 single player and multiplayer, and real racing 2 run perfect.
Check if you have something intensive running in the background

i dont think roms have anything to do with playing games! some apps may FC in some roms though, generally a fast rom will be ideal :good:

Nothing i can put my finger on m8, it's a clean install of foxhound and it appears to be fine running the rom, i'm using apex if you think that matters.
Using Siyah kernel 1.5beta

I have a fast rom (foxhound) nothing much installed, killed all 3rd party apps with autostarts.
Using Siyah and although the games run at an acceptable frame rate, i think there is some lag still present.

Precisely, all of the games that you just mentioned run absolutely fine on my phone, however Nova 3 and real racing 2 are not running as well as they should be.

[ICS] Video playback and battery mod

I've installed MX video player but unfortunately we don't have OMX for ARMv6 so, only s/w decoding is possible.
I did the following settings-
1.OC to 480-691 conservative.
2.Open MX video player and go to settings>Decoder>check S/W decoder(local and network both) and color depth to 32 bits.
3.Added the line "video.accelerate.sw=1" to build.prop.
Got these results-
1.Tried 3 videos of resulution 320x480 @25FPS and they were perfect smooth on MX.
2.Tried 1 video of resolution 640x480 @24FPS and it was also perfectly smooth on MX.
3.Tried 1 video of resolution 640X480 @30FPS and it was also perfectly smooth on MX.
4.Tried 1 video of resolution 704X576 @24FPS and it was also perfectly smooth on MX.
5.Videos with 640X480 resolution and above were not smooth with stock gallery but were perfect with MX.
6.I was happy
Battery tweak-
My device on ICS gets a lot of wakelocks. I want to know that will adding the following lines to build.prop
"ro.ril.disable.power.collapse=1" and "pm.sleep_mode=1" improve deep sleep ?
My questions-
1.Does the line video.accelerate.sw=1 has any effect ?
2.Can we also mod the youtube.apk to render using s/w only ?
Can u tell which video format did u use for testing?cos only mp4 lags in software decoding, avi plays perfectly.

I used mp4 only
I think that those battery tweaks are working well, I'm on cm9.1 flyme by hehappy and sleep wakelocks are minimized, drained only 4% in 8hrs while me and my phone were sleeping.. I got one day backup with moderate usage and still 40% is left, expected backup is above 40hrs
I didn't know that videos played smooth even at S/W decoding!!!! I ll try this in ics miui and report back

Battery runs same without any tweaks for me!! And it really has been the same for all the times I was on tweaks and without tweaks.. Tweaks have been proved to be Placebos!!

No tweaks can improve the battery life... The only thing those tweaks do is improve sleep. So, less battery is drained when phone is in sleep.
Video quality is the only thing holding me back from using ICS on my O1. That's an interesting idea about modding the Youtube.apk to use s/w decoding; I hope someone takes up the challenge. HQ videos on ICS? Hell yeah.

yes, that is possible if you uninstall youtube app and whenever you will play a video in browser, it should ask you to choose a player..

all videos work fine with s/w decoder but found that music plays 1st then the video performance is shown(both work at same time)

I've got AOKP ROM created by william. Maybe it is the reason of bad quality, but I don't think so...

@uman
If you are getting lot of wake locks then you should probably tick the "use 2g networks" options in mobile network settings.
I did the same thing and found that sleep improved. Maybe the rom/kernel is aggressive to search for 3g networks
Currently using cm9.1.1 by hephappy
And about the sw acceleration thing it improved things are only a little.
Videos encoded with h. 264 still lagged (just like stock rom) but they play smoothly on oxygen, cm7...
video playback is still laggy for me after trying all types of settings

Looking for a very slim ROM

I am looking for a ROM that cuts out a lot of unnecessary things...it may not even exist. My Vibrant no longer has cell service. But I do use it for music, games and surfing the web sometimes. So, cutting the phone app and everything related to wireless comm (except WiFi of course) to help free up memory for the other things would be nice. Much like Rock box (I think is the name) does for iOS devices like iPhone. Or, any suggestions. I am currently using the CyanogenMod nightlies for 10.1. Thanks for the attention!

Unfortunately, this ROM also cut the android apps out...I am having difficulty finding them again. Cyanogenmod's for 2.2 of course aren't working. This would be a good ROM if I still had access to the Play store when connected to WiFi. Can't even find anythign ont he forum inless my search terms aren't tweaked well enough.

[Q] Is media server drain dependent on ROM? If so, share your experiences.

As title says, does the media server drain while listening to offline music dependent on the ROM we are using? If so, then what are your results using different ROMs?

Hey mate, not sure you're in the right place? It says you sent that from a nexus 4...
Anyway, I find that music playing drain is dependent on the music player itself rather than the ROM. For example, for me, doubletwist used approximately double the battery usage per hour as Apollo music player. Have a go with a few different players, if you're concerned with battery then find a minimal player and test.

I dont think so its rom dependent..
Every rom has this
However ... wid gb stock rom mediaserver used to run only for few seconds that to wid percentage (that was quite good n useful)
Bt then since ics... it has been pathetic...just do some modification in gallery and bang the phone starts heating up due to mediaserver running in background... also accompanied by battery drain.. :/
