[Q] Flash stock firmware as second ROM - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As title says, is it possible to flash stock firmware(just firmware, not kernel or modem) as second rom, using Siyah kernel and CWM?
Which way, please?
Thank you!
P.S.: I just have dual boot with Sammy as second ROM, I have to update it...

The dualboot guide is in the Siyah thread

As I said, I just have dualboot. I need to flash an updated kernel to second rom, but I don't have a CWM package.
How to create it?

you want to flash a .tar firmware to the second rom?
swap ROMs, flash via odin, swap back.
But FYI, flashing ELLA will change your bootloader permanently and you probably won't be able to use triangle away

Flashed Using Odin, Want to Install JB... Now what?

So real quick....
I rooted my phone with ODIN last night, so I'm still running AT&T Rom and Stock 3e. I am trying to get JB installed but don't know where to go from here. I need to get Clockwork Recovery right? If so, how can I get that on my phone? I did read I should not used ROM MANAGER!
Sorry for the stupidity! I got JB on my last Galaxy before it broke I'm just confused because I did it a different was last time. Thanks for the help!
just flash a custom kernel with ODIN. That'll give you CWM recovery. then you can flash whatever you want.

Ok, is Odin 1.85 sufficient (or is there a newer one) and then can I just flash it with Siyah 4.1.4?
IDK much about Odin. But if it worked for ya the first time it should be good.
for the kernel, you must find one in a format Odin uses and not in the normal .zip which requires CWM recovery to flash.
Right now .tar is the only one that comes to mind for Odin.

I would flash a kernel that is compatible with whatever ROM you have currently. Then flash a JB ROM from CWM . Flash Siyah after you have JB if that is the kernel you want. I think you would get boot looped if kernel and ROM are mismatched.

Okay cool. I know this might be asking a lot but can you just link to me a Kernel that will work with the ROM I have? It's still the AT&T Stock Rom 2.3.4 with Baseband I777UCKH7 and Kernel 2.6.35.7.

Take a look at the guide which is the top link in my signature. It will give you a little more detail on what you want to do, and has links to the available Gingerbread kernels.

the only point in flashing a kernel compatible with a ROM, would be if you wanted to boot into the ROM.
Yes, flashing a kernel meant for a different version will most likely bootloop.
You can flash any kernel you want if you have no intentions on booting the system.
Recovery inside the kernel has nothing to do with what ROM your running. Will always be able to boot into recovery. Or **** broke
I give you lots of credit for reading not to use rom manager!

If you use Mobile Odin you can flash a custom kernel that will install CWM and then flash a custom ROM with CWM. I do this so I do not mess with the flash counter.

It sounds like you're taking the same route I did to root my phone. I first flashed a rooted, stock ICS ROM, then I flashed the Siyah kernel using Mobile Odin, then I eventually went on to flash a JB ROM (SuperNexus) using Mobile Odin. I'm sure I could have skipped that step of flashing Siyah because SuperNexus flashes a CM kernel anyway, but I kinda didn't know what I was doing.

Install cmw recovery using ODIN

Hi,
I have a ATT Samsung Galaxy S2 with 4.0.4((recently updated). I used Exynos Abuse to root my phone. I would like to install cmw recovery and try a custom rom.
I tried to follow the instruction on cyanogen mod but didn't help me much. i installed heimdall but the clockwork mod package doesn't have a zimage. so when i try the command heimdall install --kernal zimage, it says zimage cannot be found!
Is there any other way I can install CMW ? using ODIN ?

Have you tried Mobile Odin. You install it on your phone. I believe it has the capability to flash zipped files as well as tar files.
I'm not familiar with Cyanogen Mod, but you could/should use a kernel compatible with stock 4.0.4 in case you try to boot the phone after installing it. So I would suggest using Siyah. Download the CWM flashable zip package, open it with an archiving program, and extract the zimage. Then use that with either Heimdall or Mobile Odin.

As Ninja says, on the I777 ClockworkMod Recovery is "baked" into the kernel. If you try to install CWM separately, it will almost certainly brick your phone. It seems that in some cases, it is a true brick.

Use the most current Siyah. There is no Entropy kernel for ICS. Find the Siyah thread in the original development section of this forum.
If you continue to have issues, remember that before asking, you should try searching and reading for a few hours. Or as long as it takes. There is a sticky clearly stating not to use ROM manager, as it doesn't work properly with our phone. As well as many other helpful tips and instructions. Good luck

I have the same situation with ATT stock 4.0.4.
Just to help you out. This is what you need to do and use (already suggested by almost everyone here that responded). I am just pointing you tto the right location.
NOTE: Read all the instruction and make sure that you understand before you start.
1. Download and install Mobile Odin Lite from this thread. Or you can buy Mobile Odin Pro from the Play Store. (your choice)
2. Download [KERNEL] Siyah - JELLYBEAN - ICS [v4.3.3] "One kernel to rule them all!" put it in the root of your SD and flash it using Mobile Odin. If you use Mobile Odin Lite you will have to extract the file.
As also stated by Phalanx7621, "you should try searching and reading for a few hours." You should do that before you start. I took almost a week reading and looking at other posts before I even got the courage to flash this kernel.

You had no need to follow that guide, its bollocks and is only needed if you want to use stock recovery.
Instead just simply flash Siyah kernel v6 beta4 via ODIN and then that will give you root, cwm, super user and good stable kernel.
Flash siyah you will get amazing features like dual Booting, overclocking and advanced cwm

Can I flash Siyah over this root that I have already? And must I use Odin or can I use stock recovery to flash (ZIP (For CWM-based Recovery))?

I have exactly the same problem.
First I tried flashing Philz kernel. But after flashing I was stuck in the boot screen. So I tried flashing Siyah (stable, not beta), but after the blinking Siyah logo at startup the phone just turned off. Only way out, wiping data/factory reset.
So I went back to 4.0.3 and then reflashed stock 4.1.2 and rooted with the method posted by the OP.
I would really prefer to flash Siyah. But I don't want to wipe... Any suggestions?
Thanks.

^^^ Ignore that. Rom manager is not properley compatible with I9100 and using it to flash kernels with result in unbootable system and having to manually flash kernel again via ODIN.
Just flash Siyah v6 beta 4 via ODIN.

[Q] Flashing back to dualboot original ROM and Custom using Siyah

Hi, I'm unsure of how to tackle this.
I've flashed my way from stock rom and lost the backup somehow. Therefore I intend to download the original firmware package from Sammobile or Kies. The thing is; I want to continue using my Custom firmware as primary ROM and have the original one as secondary ROM. This is hopefully possible through Siyah Kernel and tools. Although, I'm not sure if flashing the original ROM will tamper with my kernel. Is it safe to do it this way? Is it even possible? And what will happen if i get an OTA update after a successful flash of the original ROM?
It's important for me to dual boot, but the custom ROM I have doesn't have great image processing from the camera, so... I want the original as backup.
Thanks in advance.

Swap your own rom from secondrom utility's.
Than install the stock rom via Odin
And swap back your own custom rom to be the first rom.
Because you use a custom recovery you don't get any ota updates.
After flashing Install siyah Kernel back.

Pac man rom for gt i9100

I recently heard about PAC MAN ROM 4.2.2 for Galaxy GT I9100 which is hybrid of different ROMs like Paranoid, CynogenMod etc. I wanted to know how much stable is this ROM in terms of performance and battery life. Additionally, is custom kernel and CWM required to install this ROM or simply flashing the new ROM will do the job? I really am looking forward to installing this ROM in my phone
I have rooted S2 GT I 9100 with official 4.1.2, stock recovery and stock kernel.

Like all custom ROMs, PACman ROM requires CWM and root. You don't need a custom kernel per se, but flashing a custom kernel is the best way to get root as well as CWM.

Can you please suggest me a stable custom Kernel that would be comparatively safe for my device GT I9100. I would be quite glad if you would help me with it...:good:
In discussing about the kernel in this thread in post# 619 pg 62 Viper has suggested me with Philz Kernel and FAQs of PacMan ROM, they suggest Dorimax Kernel for my device. So, are these kernel better in performance than the stock kernel or not and does performance of ROM depend upon kernel as well? Since I can backup my ROM and flash new ROM with temporary CWM, I am thinking of using it instead of other custom kernel so as not to mess up with my stock kernel.

Actually all custom kernels are safe. Just make sure (by reading the instructions) you flash the compatible one.
Philz-kernel for example cannot be used with PAC. Just try the stock kernel. If you don't like it, you can try (for example) Dorimanx kernel.

No you don't need to un-root and like her said.......read the instructions and search forums for specific kernals for specific ROMs. I'm not sure but I don't think dorimanx is compatible with ALL ROMs.

Error in /emmc/...while flashing Pac Man 4.2
I tried to flash PacMan 4.2 but encountered problem. Posted my issue in this thread but no solution received yet.
Got error message something like
"assert failed get prop ("ro.product.device") == "galaxys2" ||getprop("ro.buil.product")==galaxys2.....Error in /emmc/[file location]....Installation aborted..."
Tried to flash pac_i9100_4.2-milestone.1.release_20130806-205645.zip (MD5sum: 5e569d28ae20c0dbb45c71a212a35ce4)
I searched the forum but some say its problem with CWM recovery and others tell about corrupted file. I downloaded file twice incl previous release of the ROM. I even explored the zipped file and could navigate to most of the folders which I think that suggests that file is fine (no corrupted download).
I used temporary CWM v. 6.0.1.4. Should I try Dorimanx Kernel as the developer of ROM suggests the kernel for the ROM.
I currently have official JB 4.1.2, stock recovery and kernel. GT I9100.
