[Q] One X+ tethering block by AT&T - HTC One X+

Hi Guys. I posted in the HTC One X (non +) and then noticed this separate forum. Sorry for the repeat.
My company just gave me an HTC One X+ from AT&T since I didnt want an iPhone. Seems like a good device but I did run into one snag.
My previous phone was a Galaxy S2 but was having major battery drain issues with Exchange Server so I thought I would try a different manufacture and keep my fingers crossed. The snag is this: with my SGS2 I was able to use FoxFi (and others) for WiFi tethering/hotspot and it worked great even bone-stock. With the HOX+ it seems At&t has gotten a little smarter and can detect when a program is trying to hotspot and I get taht message saying to call them if I want it enabled when I start FoxFi.
I have the paid version of clockworkmod and that will not work at all - says failed to connect when I hit start in Windows 7. I also have the paid version of PDAnet and that kind of works but the connection get dropped pretty regularly making it unreliable. Not sure if this has anything to do with Att's detections since they did gave me some trouble with the SGS2 as well (not exactly same though).
My question is this: can I get FoxFi to work WITHOUT root? Since it is brand new and not mine technically I hate to start hacking the thing up so quickly. But the tethering is a function I really like.
Thanks
Ernie

My phone is rooted, FoxFi and PDAnet didn't work..
I'm using this one :

I'm notl 100% sure but i dont think you'll be able to get what you want without being rooted. I'm surprised you had such good luck with the GS2 if it was on att and not rooted. Previous poster did suggest a great tool, been using it for years... But have to be rooted to do so

I don't believe you can actually get WiFi tethering on your phone without paying the extra amount from AT&T if you don't have your phone rooted. I have mine rooted and the hotspot feature works great!

Thanks guys. Thats what I figured. Guess I will have to just do it.
Ya, go figure about the S2. Guess I got lucky with that one.

I just got my HTC One x plus, and I am using PDAnet (free version), and I am able to tether via USB, with no issues. I have been able to do skype calls with no issues at all, browsing the web is fine as well. Tethering via wi-fi is the challenge, I have not been able to find anything that will allow me to do this. I use AT&T and my device is un-rooted.

PDANet works for me but seems to drop me at randomly. Not sure if it has to do with the ATT block.
So does Att have the ability to detect teathering - rooted or unrooted?

with wi-fi and un-rooted, it seems they detect, with USB un-rooted they don't, at least, this is what happens on my end.

AT&T Hotspot connect

I bought an unlocked Streak and the one thing I miss is the ability to connect easily to AT&T WiFi hotspots. AT&T branded phones have apps included to do this. Can those be installed on the unlocked versions of the Streak? Does anyone know which ones you would need?

I went round and round with Dell, AT&T Mobility and AT&T WiFi - everyone blamed the other guy. Finally after about a month of frustrating calls to each of their support groups, I was pretty much told - cannot be done, the correct app is not now and probably will never be available to put on the Streak. AT&T WiFi support did finally agree that if you are at an AT&T hotspot that does not have free access like you would find at a McDonalds for example, call their support number, give them your AT&T mobile number and they will give you a temp password - best they would do.
Thanks for the reply.
I had not called yet and wondered if anyone had tried using the app from the locked phone OR if there was a solution from AT&T. I may call because it is supposed to be included if you are an AT&T subscriber, so you should be able to get a permanent PW, the same as if you had home internet with them.
It was something I did use from time to time.
I had never used the ATT hotspot app since I never left the factory ATT bloatware on any of my phones. With all my Windoze phones I almost never used wifi anyway since it was such a battery hog. On the Streak, it is a different story and I'd be really interested if anyone does come up with an apk or another solution to get that app on the Streak.

So the At&t Hotspot app on the Aria is just a hotspot locator. It does nothing but link you to http://attwifi.know-where.com/attwifiw/

I notice from your sig that you have an android backflip. Are you able to get the app off of it? Maybe share with us At&T subscribers?

thanks for trying.
It isn't in the ATT-specific section of the market either. I went through that one-by-one today.

I'm on 2.2 (its in my signature)
On the left hand side of the market page if you are holding it in landscape, down at the bottom, there are three icons. If it is in portrait, they are at the bottom of the green field. From left to right they read "apps" "games" and "at&t". If you click on the at&t one, there is a bunch of AT&T junk that I recognized from my ATT Windoze phones.
FWIW, if my phone isn't on the network, the ATT one changes to, I think, my apps.
The AT&T specific section of the market will show up on phones locked to AT&T. On my unlocked Streak I see My Apps where the AT&T link is on my Flipside.
Regarding the apks from another AT&T phone: how likely is it that the ones from A different model phone will work? and which would you need? Is it just an app or is there more to it?
The only apk that is clearly related to the AT&T hotspots on the Flipside is named AttHotSpotLocator.apk. It is simply an app to search for hotspot locations.
On phones with the built in capability to connect to the AT&T hotspots there is an extra setting to auto-connect to an AT&T wireless hotspot. It seems there is more to this than just an app.

Us Streakers need a super-geek android programmer type to figure this out for us. Unbelievable that with an unlimited data plan from AT&T they make it so hard to log into their hotspots just because we don't own the "right" phone in their opinion.

I don't think Android is supported yet. iPhone, bb and even WinMo is though. Even the ATRIX "4G" (yeah right) only supports att Hotspots via Tethering...which you can do with pretty much ANY att phone.

[Q] Will Hotspot work after the 15th?

With a fully rooted TB running a custimzed Rom (currently BAMF 1.6 remix), will I still be able to use the built in mobile hotspot function without having to select and pay for a tethering plan once vz changes on the 15th?
I noticed while I was running the Perfect Storm rom that I didn't get any warnings/notifications about the hotspot data usage when I started the app, but on stock and BAMF those warnings pop up...
Anyone know how thats going to work?
No, it absolutely will not work. Unless you pay for it!!
Surely there has to be someway to make it work. I just came from an AT&T Inspire and once I had it rooted with a custom rom it was able to work, even though initially the sim lock prevented the app from even opening if the account didnt have a tethering plan activated.
I beg a developer or anyone that knows how to give a look at how we can do the same thing for the TB.

I am guessing you didn't know what application you were using for tethering, because it sure wasn't the built in one that comes standard with the phone. You're obviously not the first person to ask this and there's plenty of solutions. Google is your friend.
You may not be able to use built in mobile hotspot, but there are other applications out there. Barnacle being one of them.

It absolutely was the mobile hotspot that was built in - or came standard, that worked on the Inspire after a root, unlock, and custom rom. Im aware of other third party apps, such as Wireless Tether, but I prefer the mobile hotspot app because of its functionality and the fact its already there.
It might have been the same "application" as far as you knew, but it might have just been a thin wrapper for something doing the same process as wireless tether for root or barnacle since you were using a custom rom. Unless you want to go and dissemble the code for the apk you are talking about, you really dont know.
You're also comparing apples and oranges. Ignore the fact the thunderbolt has a sim card in it because it's not used like a typical sim card on a GSM phone. The sim card might handle updates and such like any other GSM card, but you cant do much else with it. The phone has an ESN # still and that trumps it as well since you cant just take the phone anywhere network wise. The phone is still tied to a CDMA network more than anything else so you cant think something like a simple sim hack will work for it. It might be using the current GSM standard for 4g, but when it's out of range or on voice, it's using CDMA.
There are reasons why programs like barnacle and wireless tether exist and we're not all using a slightly modded, but more or less the same apk that comes with the phone. The best way for you to to figure out why since a simple "no, it cant be done" doesnt work is to try it yourself.

Really no way to get Internet Sharing on sim-unlocked Titan?

I have a SIM-unlocked AT&T Titan, and I was looking forward to using it to the max.
However, I've run into a problem. When I click Internet Sharing, it tells me to contact AT&T. My carrier allows tethering, and I don't think AT&T will do anything for me.
What is my recourse?

Throw the Titan in the ocean. Seriously though, not much you can do. I am using an AT&T "unlocked" Titan on Tmobile that I bought from Microsoft and I can't tether even though Tmobile doesn't care. Until someone manages to unlock this phone it is really a worthless investment. Don't get me wrong, I love the promise of the Titan it's just that the corporate scumbags at AT&T have severely disabled it.

I wish AT&T, being the "premier partner" of WP7, wasn't allowed to hobble it so severely.
AT&T Charges a premium for tethering. So why do you expect AT&T ever give you a phone with free tethering? It locked down iPhones and Android phones. Wp7 will not be any different.

Tethering is possible if you follow the "permanent unlock" post further up on the topics list. This permanent unlock has the added advantage of enabling internet sharing on OTHER NON-ATT sims. Be careful NOT TO RUN HTC Connection Setup after you do this as somehow this little HTC apop reenables the ATT internet sharing lock. I am posting this with an ATT Titan with Permannent unlock and a TMOBILE sim with Internet sharing enabled. Unfortunately all I can manage is edge with Tmobile in this phone but I assume in Europe I can have full 3g. This hack does not enable Internet sharing with an ATT sim unless you have the tethering plan. And for what it's worth, ATT are cretan ass*****s when it comes to tethering. I bought their PAYGO 1 gig data plan and it will not allow me to tether. Please explain to my why the f*** I shouldn't be able to tether when I PAY for a specific amount of data??!! Obviously I can't HOG bandwidth as I PAID for this data. When I go over my 1 gig I am charged more. Seriously, ATT have their heads up their a** and I am looking forward to seeing them go out of business. They are simply the worst provider on the planet and should be boycotted at all costs.
Fixed
Hi,
I think I have found the solution to this issue (a lill time consuming though).. It wasn't working for me and after doing the following I am able to do the internet sharing on my unlocked AT&T HTC Titan...
First you need to reset your phone to factory settings by doing the following (beware that all your personal data, applications and settings will be gone so better sync your phone with your PC first.. ):
Go into settings->about->reset your phone (you might need to scroll to the bottom). It confirms twice.. do that to reset your phone
After the phone is back on, try setting it up as your would do to a new device.
*** HTC Connection Wizard or Setup(whatever is that app called) seems to be the culprit so DO NOT install that app ever if you want the tethering to work.. It seems it resets some registereis as soon as it is switched on which blocks the tethering there after**
You might want to use 'reinstaller' app from the market place which will help you get all your previously installed apps by connecting to the Windows Live account and going through the list of apps you ever installed using that Windows live account. This process is the most tedious one but still better then nothing..
Once all this is done, connect your phone back to your PC and sync back in all the content that you lost from your cell while resetting.
Hope this helps.

Not working at all..it is not giving option for not installing HTC apps..by default it is taking it and not allowing to back or doing something else..
@vatsal1212 - I did the same prior to Dft HSPL and it didn't work for me too. If you want the IS to work with your AT&T phone you will need to flash custom (fully unlocked) rom. However, it is not a straight forward process especially with AT&T branded Titan. I suggest for you to read these related threads:

Getting rid of this message is easy if you have interop unlock. You will need to send root tools to the phone with a xap deployment tool (like from the windows phone sdk) then use the registry editor to add this value
[HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing\Settings] OpenMarketEnabled=dword:1
Then edit this value so it reads:
[HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing\Settings] EntitlementURI=./Vendor/MSFT/Registry/HKLM/Comm/InternetSharing/Settings/OpenMarketEnabled
Here's a link to a thread that explains the process poorly. The key is to have the two lines above in your registry. No matter how you get to the regediting step. Worked for my focus flash.

[Q] HELP Samsung Note will not Tether

Hey guys so I have a problem with my Samsung Note.
First my phone
------------------------------------------
Model number: SAMSUN-SGHI717
Android version: 4.0.4
Baseband version: I717UCLF6
Kernel version: 3.0.8
Build number: IMM76D.UCLF6
--------------------------------------------
My problem:
I purchased the phone about a year ago through ATT here in California with a 6GB a month shared data plan that I share with my girlfriend. The phone is completely stock except for a 8gb sd card.
During that time I could tether my phone via wifi or usb with no problems whatsoever. However about a month ago a issue started that I have not been able to fix. Every time I try to tether via wifi or usb to my laptop I get a error message pop up.
--------------------------------------------
Mobile hotspot is unavailable
to enable mobile hotspot on this device, go to att.com/mywireless or dial 611
----------------------------------------------
The first time this happened I contacted ATT tech support and talked on the phone with multiple people who attempted to help me with no results. They can't do anything because my phone IS able to tether and be a mobile hotspot they double checked their system. Also my girlfriends iphone can tether just fine and she shares my data plan. So at this point the only option left is a error with the phone. Also I do not have a exact date of WHEN this issue started happening as I went through a period of not using it to tether.
I have been attempting to fix this for over two weeks, going through forums and so far NO ONE has been able to shed any light on this. If there is anything you can think of for me to try you simply have NO idea how much I would appreciate it. THIS HAS BEEN DRIVING ME CRAZY!
NOTE: I actually got the tethering to work by removing the SIM card, turning the phone back on, turning it off, reinserted the sim card, and firing it back up. However, it only worked once and then went back to giving me errors.
Thanks,
Gabe
I Rooted my phone, installed Root Explorer ( a file manager app ), then deleted tethermanager.apk or tether2.apk (its been so long I don't remember).
I don't know what you have tried, besides beat your head against at&t. But it sounds like your sim card is not provisioned correctly to enable tethering.
Figured it out

Ok just got back from meeting with a AT&T friend of mine and it turns out the problem was data limits set internally on my att accound. No idea how they got turned on but when she turned them off everything worked fine. So problem solved turn your data limits off on your account!

PDAnet/FoxFi cant 'check subscription status' (?)

A new problem...I still have 4.3 on my Verizon Note 2, have updates disabled via Titanium Backup, still have the original Verizon unlimited plan...the phone does exactly what I want it to do, see no reason to mess with a winning formula. Most of the time I'm on my pc, I use the Pdanet hotspot to get connection. (It uses "FoxFi" to accomplish that, can't say I'm exactly sure how) Anyhow, when firing up the wifi mode, it always has to verify with some server that I've paid the 'subscription' fee. For the last 2 days, that process just times out. I've restarted phone, uninstalled / reinstalled pdanet/FoxFi key, no change. Always times out whilst 'checking subscription status'. (USB mode DOES work, however) I suppose there could be a problem on the other end....hope this isn't something that Verizon has managed to stomp.
Anyone else familiar with this problem, else have a work-around?
I am having the same problem since yesterday afternoon. I hope someone can figure this out.
Same problem also did verizon put a block on it
Same here! Going crazy as this is only internet for me!
Wife has same problem...I'm thinking it's a problem with the server that FoxFi uses to verify that you've purchased their app. Prolly get fixed monday
(Question: I really haven't done anything to this phone for a couple years...did they ever make it truly rootable beyond 4.3? That is...to the point where you can enable the wifi-hotspot without using a 3rd party app)

Us as well...and THAT'S only because there's a 10' stick of bamboo attached to my chimney, with an omni-directional antenna on top of THAT, feeding a cell-phone booster (Gives us passable 3G upstairs, which gets pushed around our hovel with a wifi-repeater. About as Green Acres as you can get)
Foxfi is working again. Got up and tried this morning expecting the same checking for subscription message but to my surprise it worked exactly as normal. No updates or anything. Keep it up Foxfi Your Awsome!!
