[Q] Sony Yuga / Sony Xperia Z rooting? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I have a little question. From the leaks and rumours, I believe the Sony Yuga will be the best out of the 1080p devices... But we all want a Phone thats easy to root and which has a big community of developers. I never had a Sony device so I want to ask you: How was your experience rooting Sony devices like the Xperia T? Is it easy and does Sony support it?
Thanks
Alain

Sony in general is one of the most developer friendly OEM's out there. There devices never usually ship with an easily lockable bootloader (Except some Verizon devices like the Xperia Play in the past but even that has now been unlocked) that can be unlocked following these instructions as well as other methods. As far as rooting wise they are generally simple and straightforward to root thanks to some great work by people like Bin4ry. Also because of there openness pretty much all of the recent Sony devices have gotten CM10, AOKP, Paranoid Android, etc. in addition to some cool mods and excellent themes. Overall, Sony is very developer friendly and promotes unlocking, rooting and developing.

There are a few rooting methods for the 2012 Xperia range, just head to the devices forum and check them out. There are a few original development Developers for us Xperia owners so rooting has never been much of an issue apart from having to wait for the Devs/members to figure out rooting new FW.

Nice thanks! Well now I know what my next phone will be

How can we get some quality Developers for Ray?

Hey guys,
New to the board, new to the Ray. I used to frequent the Arc, Play, Nexus S, and Desire S boards under a different user name but I've not posted in a while so I've since forgotten my User info, so thought I'd make a new one.
Anyways...
I got my Ray, bought it out unlocked, and unlocked the boot loader. I was really excited to get my Cyanogen on and enjoy this beautiful device. Only...Cyanogen Rom for the Ray is HORRIBLE. The Camcorder is broken, the live wallpapers option is non-existant, and the control widget is completely useless for brightness control. Seriously, WTF is wrong with that ROM its is absolute garbage.
I can understand the Ice Cream Sandwich ROM being bug ridden, its early time, but at the very least I expected Cyanogen 7 to be fully functional. Geez.
Those are the only 2 ROMS I've tried so far, the rest look boring. MIUI I am not interested in, and outside anything that slightly alters the Stock firmware there is NOTHING AVAILABLE?
Where are the ROMS? Where is the support? Where are the quality developers?
All we have are half backed ideas, ROMS that don't work properly, and nothing else.
Maybe we should start up a fund and maybe donate a few Rays to some good developers that can actually provide because at this point, there is no point in using anything other then Stock Firmware.
The Ray is a capable device, similar to the Arc, there should be more support. I miss the great support that the Nexus S and the Desire S recieved. Especially the Desire S, the Developer from that board are truly amazing. Proxuser and Super kid were really really good developers, and we need developers like them who dedicate the time needed for quality ROMS. Our support is a joke compared to what they have, and I think we need to either put up some money or some incentive, like maybe donating a few Rays, to get the ball rolling.
I agree with you, it's pretty disappointing.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure the differences between Ray and Arc are minimal, so it's quite surprising that Arc gets tons of support and Ray gets basically nothing. Even more that inferior devices such as the Minis are more supported. Maybe the device is not selling well and not many people have it? I don't know.
Obviously I'm just a tinkerer and not a developer, so I don't know how hard it could be to port Arc stuff to Ray, but yeah, this devices needs more support. How to get it? I have no idea.
I think the stock rom is pretty good, I don't find any major problem with it, it look pretty good and it's decently fast (with Supercharger it's much better), so for now I don't really feel the need to install an unofficial one.
Also, many Arc mods to the interface work on Ray too, so check out those forums too and see if there is something you like. I installed the Xperia styled torch widget and the modded battery icon (with percentage) from the Arc board and they worked fine.

Re-reading my initial post I may have sounded a bit harsh. Its just very very disappointing coming from a device that had a TON of support to one that has virtually none.
I will take your advice and check out some of the Arc's mods.
I've owned a ton of Android devices (Xperia x10, Captivate, 2 Xperia Arcs, Nexus S, another Xperia Arc, HTC Desire Z, HTC Desire S, and finally the Xperia Ray) and this is by far the worst support I've ever seen.

I agree with you!...even my previous worst phone...Se X8...got tons of support ...i am really disappointed seeing Ray being put aside...
Sent from my ST18i using Tapatalk
What are you guys on anyway? The X8, since it was mentioned, was released 1 year ago. With 1.6 on it... there have been, what 4 different versions? And Gingerbread is sub par on it.
Regarding Adreno's note on HTC Devices.... As you are aware HTC makes phones for many companies, including T-mobile and Google. So most of these devices have almost the same internals. Hence development on those devices is really easy (you just copy paste files from one rom to another and bam you got your kang).
So on to the Ray... It was released 4 months ago. It has a different screen than most phones (480x854) so porting any generic rom onto it requires some smali editing skills. And... There is NO AOSP release for Xperia devices... at least so far. What makes other devices so "different" than the Xperia's is that some of them have been build on AOSP.
For example the DesireZ - Tmobile G2. One has Sense, the other is built on AOSP. So you have 2 completely different builds for the same device.
And some food for thought... Sony Ericsson needs about 6 months, an enormous team of developers and a ****load of money to build their own Firmware based on Already released Code. What makes you think you will see something "new" from some amateurs in less than 6 months time?
Yes i have built my "own" Rom based on the Stock Rom for the Xperia Active. I dont even consider my self an amateur. I am a total noob.
So, to finish this rant, since development for these devices is young, yet the android system as it is, is quite mature, I would recommend you to assist the people who have already developed a Rom for the Ray, in order to make something good from it. Creating a Thread in the development section, complaining about the development being "dissapointing"... then i rest my case.

I personally don't want "assisting" of the developers that have been working on the Ray thus far, as I said my original post I don't believe that they are up to the job.
I want to entice more talented developers. What can we do to bring experienced developers that know what they are doing to the Ray?
At this point, rooting and unlocking the bootloader is pretty pointless. You are screwing yourself out of over the air updates, and there is nothing that can fill the void from the development community thus far. What. is. the. point.
This is where you are wrong.
What do you actually want from a Rom? Speed? Stability? Battery Life?
I have managed to do all these with no real coding at all. The Xperia Active with DooMLoRD's Kernel and various tweaks that i found on XDA, when on max OC ranks between the Sensation and the SGS2. Both are Dual core with a far better GPU than the Adreno 205. Oh and the OC is completely bulletproof.
For the time being, the best developers for these devices is Sony herself. It is stable, and battery efficient. You on the other hand can make it more "personalized" and fitting to your needs... Gaming-browsing... whatever...

Even if I had just Cyanogen working properly I'd be happy.
On the Desire S board Superkid had Ice Cream Sandwich ported (AOSP) to the desire S within 2 weeks, only being able to work on it on the weekends. Thats like 6 days.
On top of that, he had everything working flawlessly other than the camera by week 3.
Thats the kind of development I am talking about. Imagine how hard that was.
We don't have anything like that over here.
No it wasnt that hard. I say again. You need to be able to edit THE WHOLE DAMN BASE, if you want it in a different resolution than the one it was intended.
Yes some guys are simply amazing at what they do, but as i said earlier, most HTC devices use the same chipsets, boards, cpu's, modems etc. Sony uses a board (codenamed mogami i think) specific to the mini's. It uses a different one for the Ray, Play etc.
You will almost never have something like that. Be happy that the Cyanogenmod Team is actually working on these devices.
Hell, the mini's dont even have a MIUI build. Its either CM7 or Stock. But honestly i couldnt care less. I got bored of flashing a new rom every 2 weeks, just to see nothing different. The only difference was Sense 2.1 Sense 3.0 Sense 3.5. The rest ROMS use the same old AOSP build with an ADW launcher or a LPP on top... Big deal.
Now if someone gets sense on these devices... i'd be impressed
Complaint/rant threads about developers are not allowed at XDA. If you want something done, make it happen!

Buyin a Sony Xperia S

Hello peeps!
I seriously considering to buy a Xperia S.
It's just the way it looks, so nice .
I already own a HTC Desire and an Acer A500 tablet. Love both devices
I am not a developer, but i like messing with my devices, testing different ROMS, Kernels etc etc. LOL sometimes I mess up my phone by testing and experimenting stuff and then i come back @ XDA and start crying and begging for help LOL
Now because of my mess up your device hobby I would really like to do the same things on a Xperia S (if buying).
What do you expect of the Devs? How were the previous Sony Devices?
Is it easy to root/install CMW? Or is it like ti Motorola all locked up and too bad they don't have brains and think!!!!
Will we have (for example) Cyanogenmod roms on this device?
Please share the info you got on research with me, convince me to buy it and not the Galaxy Nexus !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (btw, i know all the stuff I like for my hobby will be or even is already available on this Samsung device just hate the cheap Samsung quality) .
Tnx XDA
Bootloader is unlockable, and we're waiting for kernel sources to start development.
Is it so hard to look in the Development section to see the work being done now?

Official: 2011 Sony Xperia handsets will NOT get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

John Cooper, UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, has been taking questions from customers on Facebook and, perhaps inadvertently, revealed that both the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S and Xperia mini pro will not receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.
We have been waiting for Sony to make an official statement on their Jelly Bean upgrade plans and this is the first concrete news we have on the matter. The Xperia arc S was the highest specced 2011 Sony Xperia handset, so if this handset isn’t getting it we can conclude that none of the other Xperia handsets from the 2011 range will get the update either. However, the 2012 Xperia range do look likely to get the update, although timing remains an unknown right now.
Its funny that many of the 2012 Xperia handsets have lower specs than the 2011 models. It sux! anw, we can hope for a developer to port JB for 2011 Xperia lineup. & Cynomod10 is coming with JB
Credit goes to www.xperiablog.net
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/07/26/official-2011-sony-xperia-handsets-will-not-get-android-4-1-jelly-bean/
They have made a mistake
Xperia 2011 handets should have had that minor upgrade to Jelly Bean, especially given the performance issues. Also, it means those handsets are stuck permanently on 2.6 Linux kernel, unless one goes the custom ROMs way. Thankfully, Cyanogenmod devs are supporting Xperia Mini Pro, so I am starting on a quest to root my SK17i.
Jelly Bean would be slow on our phones if official update was done. Sony will push own Timescape UI inside instead of Butter UI, so we don't get any performance improvements in UI.
It's a shame, but it was expected...
Yeah, i also expect 2012 xperias will probably get Jelly Bean update around this time next year (+/- couple months), just before Key Lime Pie comes out

I wonder....
does anyone remember Xperia x10i? the funniest was they came from Donut 1.6 to GingerBread 2.3. they've got 3 official FW update.. and me guess we still have a chance.. Our device is not low range since we have 512 ram inside. and some of Xperia 2012 family also have the same type.
I was expecting this. They won't update 2011 xperia phones to JB. But they will update 2012 xperias. If I buy another phone, it won't be a Sony. Maybe a Nexus 7 but not a Sony. I was very disappointed with the ICS update. Can't imagine a JB for our phones, maybe to slow...
Long live to Gingerbread! xD

Anyway, I'm not surprised, but they could change their minds if community presses them enough. As I remember, HTC upgraded Desire to GB even though they said phone was underpowered (for sense bloatware).

The thing is that to be able to create stable custom roms you need support from the manufacturer. Without proper source code or hardware drivers/libraries that suit the new OS developers have to tack everything together which greatly increases the chances of bugs.
IMHO the least thing Sony could do is provide a proper hardware layer to developers to give them a solid base to work from. Nobody really needs the Sony customisations anyway so they could actually save a lot of development time there.
Personally I'd wish all android phones came with AOSP, like what Apple and Microsoft do. It saves the manufacturers a lot of development and opens the way for more frequent/longer OS updates.
All hope of custom rom
**** Sony, where's Ericsson when we need him?

2.Same will happen with xLoud
But we can force SONY to give us JB update
If majority of all the customers keep on telling them about the update for 2011 Family, after all customers are the only strength of any COMPANY
What say guys?
Yeah yeah yeah! As what I have expected from SONY!
Come on guys! This isnt the first time so stop relying on this b*llsh*t company. We have the developers here and they are even better than those "INCOMPETENT" developers from Sony.
So stop crying over spilled milk and just wait for JB port to our devices :good:

I don't know why people keel slagging off Sony as a company?
Personally I buy an SE phone for the hardware (who else makes a tiny phone with a useable hardware keyboard?) while knowing you can optimise the thing to personal taste by modding the firmware and using apps.
As for updates the Mini Pro got 200% of what it's predecessor got (the X10 Mini Pro which only got Eclair).

No official Jellybean from Sony

Hey, I just found out that Sony wont provide us with a Jellybean update:
http://blogs.sonymobile.com/product...rades-jelly-bean-for-2012-xperia-smartphones/
This is really bad, because they promised 18 months of updates, and thats one of the main reasons why I did buy this phone, so no more Sony phones for me after this phone.
Sad

I found it not surprising for Sony doing that. They're late to the game now even for flagship devices.
Most of consumers not even want the update or know about it, only us screaming and crying is not enough force. And most of consumers will screaming and crying with update broke their device so rom need to be bug free to release, it cost a lot sop they dont bother.
I personal think Sony should have 'for experimental testing only' rom release without any warranty when they can not release the official one, I'm sure it take much less effort and can satisfy the community at good-enough level.

not expect Xperia 2011 to 4.1 but still disappointed with sony
Yes it sucks... no official JB for all 2011 devices
will xs get JB?
It's a flagship one.
Sony Mobile has this morning confirmed that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for its new Xperia devices (Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V) will start to receive the update from the middle of Q1 2013. Sony Xperia devices that launched earlier this year including the Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia P, Xperia go and Xperia J will be upgraded to Android 4.1 in “due course”. Looks like Xperia miro, Xperia tipo, Xperia tipo dual, Xperia sola and Xperia U users are excluded.
We suspect that the JB launch for the other 2012 Xperia models could take as long as early Q2 2013, given that no concrete information has been given. It’s hard not to commend Sony Mobile for updating many of its mid-range handsets along with their higher-end models. However, Xperia sola and Xperia U owners will rightfully be arguing why they won’t be seeing the update. It’s certainly not a question of hardware specification.

Well, the problem is that unlocked bootloader is an obligatory requirement for using JB custom ROMs. The point of expecting official JB from SONY is because devs. could get official drivers too, so they could cook ROMs for locked and unlocked bootloaders... Or at least that's what I think. There are some people who just can't or don't want to unlock the bootloader, one of them is me.
The reason why I bought a Ray is because I'm (somehow) a SONY fan. In fact, I was going to buy Neo but in the SONY store in my city they didn't have it in stock anymore, so I liked Ray and I got it. Their handsets are beautiful and reliable on their performance. A friend of mine has a Galaxy Ace and that phone is terrible, he has problems with his modem in his house, the phone doesn't connect to it (my Ray does without problems). Plus, no ICS ROMS for it. My business partner has a Samsung Galaxy SII and that piece of s**t is busted, it shows that is charging battery when the phone isn't even plugged! And it doesn't last more than 5 hours...
SONY (and SE) phones have never gave me that kind of problems. But yeah, it's really lame not getting JB, I guess SONY devs weren't smart enough to make project butter to work fine in 2011 line, or it's because all the damn bloatware they want to push affected the performance at the point the phone was a total slowpoke.Or, it's a lame strategy, getting ride of your current device to get a 2012, or even a 2013 one. Whatever is the reason, this is a bad new and a low move from SONY.
Personally, I was going to get Xperia V, but with the rumored prototypes (Odin and Yuga) I'd rather to wait, my Ray still has so much to give and when I get a new phone I want to feel I'm getting a real big upgrade.
Or I dunno, maybe the next Nexus isn't from Samsung anymore... I'd give it a chance
Doesn't matter.... its like we are sticking with a 1ghz phone for a long time since there a cheap dual core phones out there... so I guess its okay and who cares about jb on a 3.3 inch phone
dreezz said:

The problem is that custom rom cookers don't have the latest libs for the HDMI and camera, for example, so they can't get them to work properly or at all. And while Sony has released all the libs for the Xperia S to the custom community, they won't do that for the Xperia 2011 line. So, no official nor unofficial solution for getting a 100% usable JB, though the handsets are fully capable of running it even better than ICS.

[Q] Moving on from Xperia Sola

Hey guys, want your help in selecting a new phone.I am happy with my xperia Sola but its been a year since i bought this device...and yeah i am bored with it,so need a change now.I am confused between Samsung S3,S4 mini and Note 2.Which one should i go for?
My specs for the new phone:
Good dev support
Official CM support
Nice features
Faster GPU-yeah i play lots of games
Nice display(no pixelation etc)
Should be able to fit in my jeans' pocket
Also want to know, how good s3/note2 exynos soc is in comparison to S4 mini's qualcomm krait?
Hello akp.ajinkya,
I think you've heard about Nexus 4 and it's price offer , I think it's an awesome phone for that price and it has lots of development activity.
Just check in the store and like you can see the specs are awesome!

On the other hand, I have a friend that has the Galaxy S4 and it's awesome too, smooth as butter and has lots of development too. The price is higher but the specs are a bit better to.

What about the Sony Xperia Z? Now that is out the Z1, Z's price should be decreased. Also, if i am not wrong, there is already 4.3 android version for this device from the xperia z google edition.
Also, since you are a heavy player, why don't you take a look on Sony xperia ZU? Big screen great performance. Otherwise a good choice with less money is keeping your sola and get a nexus 7 2013

Yes bro..Who wouldn't want to get a Nexus phone ??They are the ones to receive all the updates first...Nexus 4 is also available in my country but the only downside is neither google nor its manufacturer LG provide after sales service here except for Nexus 7(2012) 'cause it is officially available via google store..Yeah my bad luck....Samsung is the only market player here,so I thought of buying new phone amongst S3,Note2 or S4 mini only.I also got hold of S4 once for two days(from my friend) and its a very good phone with some damn nice features at its side, but alas its not in my budget also doesn't fit my pocket, literally .But even then thanks for your suggestions:good:

But even then thanks to you guys for the suggestions:good:

I think bro that they recognized that the bootloader has been unlock because during the procedure of unlocking the bootloader you have to give on Sony's site your IMEI
Maybe i am wrong thought but i think it's the only way

Yes bro..Who wouldn't want to get a Nexus phone ??They are the ones which receive all the updates first...Nexus 4 is also available in my country but the only downside is neither google nor its manufacturer LG provide after sales service here except for Nexus 7(2012) 'cause it is officially available via google store..Yeah my bad luck....Samsung is the only market player here,so I thought of buying new phone amongst S3,Note2 or S4 mini only.I also got hold of S4 once for two days(from my friend) and its a very good phone with some damn nice features at its side, but alas its not in my budget also doesn't fit my pocket, literally .But even then thanks for your suggestions:good:

Yes i agree with you that they may may have tracked it like this only, through their database containing IMEI of unlocked devices. But I doubt how could they be so sure that I have unlocked it 'cause i just requested an unlock code. How did they knew i have used it or not?

Yeah..but its the only way to install roms like CM,AOKP etc with custom kernels on any sony smartphones & tablets,as with the case of installing Jellybean on my xperia sola.
Whereas its not in the case of Samsung phones and 'cause of that i feel that samsung is more development friendly
Bought my Note 2 today.Thanx everyone
