if its a flashable zip, flash it from recovery.
if its a boot.img, fastboot it from bootloader
you can find softwares to do it too

Are kernels very difficult to find? I've searched a lot for kernel 2.6.38.8 and I just can't find the kernel in zip format after looking at a series of error 404 thinking that this kernel is out of date.

After flashing the success kernel my phone won't boot? I'm on 10/2.
You haven't specified which is your phone model, as some device's bootloader is locked and some not.
Installing kernel in Samsung devices (Unlocked bootloader) is pretty easy, you just have to flash the zip from CWM recovery. Or if you have got a boot.img make a flashable zip (There are many tutorials over here for that) and flash it.
Another option is, replace the boot.img of your Custom ROM zip file and flash.

This is the correct answer to every question asked in here so far!!!!
There is no "generic Android way" to do what you're asking for. It can change for every single phone. And if you flash the wrong thing, you may permanently destroy your phone! And if your phone has different variants, be sure to get the version specifically for your exact phone! For example, flashing something for the wrong Galaxy S3 can kill your device in an unrecoverable way because where the kernel goes for one variant is where the bootloader goes for another variant!
If you don't know exactly what you're doing, then don't do it and go learn more! Experiment first ONLY with step-by-step tutorials for your EXACT scenario! If something's different, don't do it!
yeah read into this a good bit more before you do this. look in your phones forums for a guide. you mess this up you phone becomes pretty useless.
I'm a little worried now, and a bit rushed this morning as I have a funeral to attend this morning.
Bottom line, my phone has a blank screen now. It gets past the boot animation, but goes blank after that. I cannot get into recovery or boot loader by pressing the power/vol down buttons. I have done a couple battery pulls, but of no help. When I connect it to my PC, it does not show up as a disk drive, though it did say installing drivers.
Google flashable kernals and put in android sdk folder then go to cmd andtype fastboot flash name of kernal.img. I 90% sure.
Remember to click thanks if I helped

This is the kernel I need for the rom I downloaded,
Team-Hydra / android_kernel_htc_msm8660. It is for the new rom CyanogenMod 10.1 - Android 4.2.1 - Jellybean.
So what is being said is that I need to put this on my sd card in the android sdk folder, the flash it through the command prompt. Is this correct so far?

You need to flash via fastboot like u said Android SDK Folder. Just need to flash the boot.img follow what ROM u flash.
Extract the Boot.img from the ROM.zip u flashed.
Put the Boot.img at SDK folder which is same with fastboot locate.
Boot ur phone to BOOTLOADER -> Fastboot, then using command promp fasboot flash boot boot.img, then reboot your phone..
Here is where I'm at with this.
After letting my phone sit all night without the battery in it, I still have the same problem. After the boot animation, the screen is black. I tried to connect the phone to the pc, but my computer does not see it. I also tried to use a card reader, but still my computer does not see the card either. The reader is working because I put another sd card in it and it saw it.
The thing is now, I can get into the bootloader and recovery, though I now seem to have Clockwork instead of 4ext, which is what I had before I started having problems. Clockwork sees the card as well.
I don't know how to get anything on the card now since I cannot connect to the pc, either through the phone or through a card reader.
Anyone have any ideas?

I have the HTC EVO V 3D. It's rooted and S-off.
I have looked but I cannot find anything on how to get fastboot for Nook Tablet working (and yes I do have CM9 0.05.1) and I want to flash recovery but it is not recognizing my Nook. All it has on device manager is Other Devices/ Acclaim with an exclamation point. Please help
Hi, have you installed adb succesfully in your pc previously?
If yes then the next thing you need is fastboot.exe file, if not then start with that first then fastboot.
You can find what you need here, also if you search in my threads (link in my signature) you can find a tutorial about how to install and use ADB.

Acclaim
I have the same challenge. I have ADB working successfully (and have used Veronica's guide to repartition my NT - thanks again). Yet when I use Cyanoboot and start Fastboot my device shows up in Other Devices as Acclaim and none of the USB drivers I have pointed to get installed. It isn't mission critical that I solve this but it would be nice from a knowledge base to understand what I am missing in case I ever need to use Fastboot. It seems to be a much easier tool to change the installed Recovery image than ADB. Any help would be appreciated.
adb works for me. i currently have cyanoboot, when i try to go to start fastboot to install a new recovery, i notice in my device manager there is an uninstalled driver called "Acclaim". Already tried the NT drivers for it and it didn't work. Any ideas? I recently flashed succulent's cm7 image which had a cwm v5.0.x and i want to flash cwm v 5.5.x. Already tried using indirect's NT recovery flasher and no go on that...

I don't have windows so I won't comment on that. There is one thing that I never see mentioned when talking of adb access problems.
On custom roms (your case cm9 0.05.1) in settings, developer options, Android debugging should be checked to allow adb access. If not checked that may be your issue.
If I'm having adb issues and it was working previously I'll boot to cwm (5.5.0.4 version not 5.0.2 or whatever) and go from there.
You should get adb working properly, but to flash recovery you can use one of the flashable zip files while in cwm. They work for me!
Got a few minutes on a windows 7 pc (people should take their breaks at their desk). If you are using Veronicas thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22049356&postcount=1 you will find a file runmefirst.bat if you run it and follow instructions about unplugging and replugging nook it will create and setup the previously mentioned file. Do not run zergy as suggested. When it pulls device manager your exclamation should say nook. Right click it, update driver software, browse my computer, let me pick, and then choose the directory with your usbdrivers, tell it yes to use them. Do not worry about anything else from runmefirst.bat including anything else to run. You just want it to set the codes for your nt and then it is of on use.
I had adb working for my nt quickly on that windows 7 pc. It had no previous adb or usb drivers installed.
Good Luck
I got nook tablet drivers installed and it works for adb however fastboot still has acclaim!
anyone have steps how to fix this?

like i said in a previous post, right click the acclaim item under other devices and look for the product id and edit the android_winusb.inf accordingly.
after that right click acclaim, update driver software, and browse for the drivers yourself. if all goes well fastboot should work. this is how i did it. not that i ever really use fastboot but its good to have just in case.
Is there any step-by-step tutorial on how to flash NT with fastboot? I have tried to search, but still could not get it work.
Thanks.

Check your android_winusb.inf to see if you have the right entry for the NT -- see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35971559&postcount=13.

Why not flash your NT using SD-based CWM Recovery (e.g., see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37515697&postcount=31)?
The easiest way under windows, is just choose the driver on your own, use the driver from the Android SDK (sdk\extras\google), and you will be presented with a couple of options, choose Android Composite ADB Interface.
Hello Guys ,
i just would like to ask you that if I installed cm 10 can I go back to stock ics
or i can't because downgrade might damage my device.
Thanks & Best Wishes
You can go back anytime you want. Take a Nandroid backup before you flash. Good luck!
And if you don't have nandroid backup you can always download the stock firmware from sammobile .com and flash via Odin
I've done this successfully to fix some issues I was having. :good:

Yes windows explorer and in MY Computer. Also will not connect to Kies.
Just to cover the obvious, did you go into SETTINGS > STORAGE and click the 3 dots at the top right corner of the screen which will show "USB computer connection". Click that and then check the box for "Media device (MTP)". Then try connecting your tablet to the computer.

Are you sure your friend didn't delete the rom after installing it on your device? Installing a rom should not delete the file from your computer since that whole operation takes place on the tablet unless you push it from the computer. Did your friend flash the rom in recovery or do something different?
Re: the Kies issue, this has come up in many threads before. You can try reinstalling Kies to see if its a bad USB driver. Some ppl have said tho that you need to revert to stock in order for Kies to recognize the device...it might take even that. If you're willing to start fresh and flash stock firmware to find out that is a choice you can make

Alright then in that menu scroll over to the USB Icon and select it after connecting your prime to your computer (Make sure you install the drivers for your prime) and run the .bat in the attached file (unzip to it's own folder and open it to find the .bat file). This will flash TWRP 2.3 for the Asus Tf201 and from there you can flash any rom you like so long as it has the same boot loader as your prime does.

2 choices, if you have a sd card, put it in the pc copy the rom to the card, eject it then put it in your prime and in trwp select external sd card to flash from. The other way is to adb push the rom. Since you have fastboot I will assume you also have adb. Put the rom you downloaded into the same directory as adb, plug the tab into the pc, boot to twrp, then on the pc do adb devices in the adb command window, should show your tab. Next to adb push /name of rom/ sdcard or /media I would try a small text file first to make sure you have it right otherwise you may sit watching it for upto 5 minutes only to file out you have the wrong path. There are lots of threads with adb push in them so if you get stck do a search, I know I have explained it at least 4 or 5 times, you can always just look for my posts.

I think, without root, you can't view /data, but you can try.
If you can, the sms should be located in this .xml: er /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
Then backup it via adb, reflash your rom and replace the file with the backuped one.
If you can't access /data, maybe you can root/flash cwm to your phone too, if it's bootloped? (Phone specific, so I don't know.)
Good luck.

Yes, the drivers could be the problem or maybe (but I don't hope so) the phone isn't recognizable in this mode via adb.
If you're using Windows, go to the device manager and check, if there's a android thing with a exclamation, then refresh the driver of this, if it's possible. Simply via right click etc. (Of course, if the device is connected.)
And have you tried this here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15585507&postcount=2
btw: Your phone seems to don't boot up since a few days, do you don't need it? Another idea is, maybe you can backup all your files via fastboot/download mode or something else, but you'll have to post this question in the device specifically forum, because it's different on phones.
Okay, one more time good luck.

yes, in the device manager there is an android thing with a yellow exclamation. i clicked on refresh the driver and i get the window asking me where i want to get the driver from. since i have the driver in an Sd card, i´ll try that tomorrow.
well, i do need the phone, but now im using my old one. until i can finally fix this issue.
What did you mean with the Fastboot mode? when im in the boot menu, i can select Fastboot, but it wont help much, because it will just start the booting again (bootloop). but i dont know if this is what you meant with fastboot.
thanks

Okay, but you can also let Windows automaticly search the internet for the drivers.
About fastboot, I don't know if you can backup files with this. (Normally you can use this to flash boot.img etc.) And I don't know, how it works on your device, so ask in your device forum.

adb is not recognizing the device, so im giving up on recoverying the phone data. I tried a factory reset to fix the bootloop but it aint working either. So now i can only think of sending it to the Htc technical center, the phone is under warranty.

Okay.
Are you talking about flashing stock rom, when you said factory reset?
If not, maybe this helps. (There's a link to flash stock rom in this thread.)
