Hello. Has anyone tried a wired or wireless w/dongle Xbox 360 controller with their DNA? Since the PS3 controllers don't seem to be working, I'm looking for an alternative.
TIA for any and all responses.

Well wireless ain't gonna work I can tell you that much. The reason a ps3 controller works is because it uses Bluetooth.

Using an OTG adapter and the USB dongle for connecting a wireless Xbox 360 controller to a PC, people have been able to use the wireless xbox controller with most Android 4.0+ devices.
Just wondering if it works for our DNA before I go out and purchase one since the PS3 controller doesn't work.
Sent from within using Tapatalk 2
Seems like HTC has given our OTG limited functionality. Until now I've never had a device where I couldn't just plug in my XBox controller and go. And yes, if OTG is working as intended you can use the wireless dongle and a wireless controller. I may start swapping some libs to see if I can get this **** working as it should.
Please keep us posted

What's weird is the vendor files for xbox and other controllers are on the device, it just doesn't work. Hoping it's a bug and will be fixed in the next update.

So I did some research and apparently the only problem is getting the DNA to supply power to the device. Supposedly the USB OTG is not handicapped in any other way besides it not providing power. If you supply your own power to the device (via a Y cable or powered hub) then it should work fine. Getting power to the device via the DNA would be a kernel thing I'll ask dsb if he's seen anything that may help us.
First off, can anyone with a powered hub test it out to make sure everything works as it should so we can move forward?

It will power usb sticks just fine as they don't require much power. For devices that draw more power (USB hard drives, XBox controllers, etc.) it stops supplying power and gives you an "unable to charge device" error.
Also, mine mounts just fine without any app. It mounts under /storage/usb/ and there is a symlink to /mnt/usb/.
I tried the whole ps3 controller thing....doest work. I did however have a usb otg adapter and an old usb gravis gamepad (ps3) style and it worked flawlessly. I know best buy sells a logitech version of what i have for $24.99. As for the mount i used a coat hanger that i re-bent with some gaphers tape. Now vice city plays awsome!!!! Ymmv... Cheers gentlemen!!!

I have a Usb hub and otg cable hooked up and my phone powered a Microsoft sidewinder x4 keyboard and g9x mouse at the same time just fine.
Yup, it's def not got anything to do with power not being supplied. OTG cable plugged into a powered usb hub makes no difference for the PS3 controller. I was however able to get the device to semi recognize the wired xbox controller. When I booted up Shadowgun with the xbox controller hooked to the powered usb hub, it gave me the option to set up a gamepad, which only happens when you have one plugged in. I wasn't able to set any of they keys with it, though. So not really functioning. I'm guessing something to do with the Kernel versus anything hardware related.
Already in contact with HTC regarding this issue. We'll see what they're willing to do about it.

Here is a companion device for those already using the the Webtop hack.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199443
It's the same OTG USB hub hack used with the Atrix, just wanted to share my setup and testing. So far it works excellent.
Right now, I have a USB keyboard and mouse, a FAT32 flashdrive, and a FAT32 external HDD all hooked up the the hub, and I'm watching a movie
off the HDD.
The basic theory of operation is that in micro usb connectors there is a fifth pin, actually the 4th over in a schematic. That pin is actually the ID pin, when its state changes it indicates to the phone that it USB mode is changing. In our case, we ground it, telling the phone to go into host mode. Now because the phone cant supply power to the USB device, we have the red jumper wire on the hub itself. This is effectively bridging the +5 from the power supply to the phone.
It should be noted that as of this post, i have only tested FAT32 formatted drives with this setup.
I'm working with a friend at the moment on an NTFS module, so the Photon can utilize NTFS drives.
Now, my setup looks a bit off because my connectors are on order and the one in the pictures, is one I cut out of a motorola cable. So it doesn't look pretty, but works great.

What type of usb hub can I use? does it have to have usb 2.0 or 3.1? Does it have to have ac adapter? Can I use a usb host cable otg instead of a micro usb and does it make a difference?
Thanks in advanced!

It can be any powered hub, if you plan to use an external HDD with it you should make sure the power supply for the hub is at least 2 amps. For now its only USB 2.0, USB 3 isnt compatible. I modified a stock USB micro cable, but you can but a OTG cable that will work with this setup. Like the link below, that is a OTG adapter. Also, the hub would need a few modifications, like i was talking about at the top.

You may want to check your OTG cable. If its not set up properly it will not function. The un-used pin in the micro connector must be grounded. Ive noticed not all the cables you can buy are quite right. Thats why i build my own. I hope to get up rev 2 tomorrow...a bit more in depth. Maybe i can shed some more light on the issue...

Thanks for looking into this.
So, once you've mod a USB hub, are you using a cable that is <male micro USB to female USB A>?
I've not seen that before. Usually, USB cables that have a micro USB on one end will have a male USB A on the other, not a female. I did a quick search and couldn't really find any <male micro USB to female USB A> cables. I also didn't see any female A to female A cables that would allow for the same thing.
Please elaborate, thanks.
Edit: oh, maybe you use a USB 2.0 A to Micro B Female / Male Adaptor?
You need to buy some from amazon search micro usb to usb female. Or ever female usb to female usb they sell for $2 plus shipping. I bought otg cable didn't make a difference had to take it apart as well.

Just a heads up you need to connect your usb power adapter to the red usb from the hub then your otg and phone to the black and keyboard/mouse infra-red or 2.4 ghz stuff to the female usb adapters. Remember red goes to power!
I went back and forth trying to figure it out when all i had to do was push power to red. Duh!!

Ok, I was confused by what jguevara wrote. jguevara, could you tell me if I got this right?
1) Buy this OTG "cable" - it's really just a adapter:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/micro-usb-on-the-go-host-otg-adapter-pair-50774
2) You might also want a hub for powering USB devices
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/cable-style-dual-power-1000ma-usb-2-0-4-port-hub-13526#open full view
The OTG adapter already does the "4th pin to ground" thing described by the OP, so using the adapter on the Photon makes the phone go into USB Host mode.
The phone, acting as host, won't have enough power via the USB port to power many USB devices, like portable hard drives. So that's why you need a powered USB hub. The hub in the link has an extra red USB connector. You can use the Motorola USB power adapter(the one that came with your phone) as a power source for the hub.
Also, I don't think this setup will charge your phone. It will charge devices connected to the other end of the USB HUB, but not your phone, correct? So, if you're using this setup to transfer files from one portable hard drive to another portable hard drive, with the phone acting as the USB host for the transfer, you'll be using up battery power the whole time it's transferring.
Do I have that right? jguevara?
My country lies to the east of Europe, we have access to a cool phones, but the additional components like HD dock with three USB ports, are not for us.
Thx to XDA and info found here I managed to build a working dock for motorola razr. I used pass-through micro HDMI - HDMI, cheapest USB Hub and micro USB cable with thin wire connecting 4 and 5 pin.
Motorola really should change the sales system.

I have the USB one in your Amazon link. I can play a movie, and open files from a thumb drive. Once plugged in, it opens like it's a folder on the drive.
I also bought another one from Amazon that has a short piece of flexible cable, so that I don't have the huge hemorage hanging from the side. It works too, but the connector cover came off the connector, so I glued it. It was less than $10, but I don't have a link right now for it.
I can also confirm (though probably not a surprise) that a USB HD does not work. The message says "High powered USB device" and won't connect. So you'd need a powered hub for that.
I bought such a cable off ebay for 7 dollars shipped
Works exactly as expected.

I am very new to this tablet, its my first android tab.
Well i want to use it as usb host primary for usb 3g stick for gprs/ 3g, will this accesory work or what else more i need for this stick to work. ?
Looking at getting a GT-P3113 this weekend and need to have the USB connection to external HD as well but do not see the needed 30 pin connector in photos of the tab online to make the Samsung USB connection kit to work.
Does the GT-P3113 at Best Buy/Staples have this connection setting.
Thanks!
Just got mine today. USB thumb drive works, and files are readable. My iMac mouse and keyboard don't work. I believe I need to get a AC adapter for my USB hub and then route them through that. As stated earlier in the thread I believe high powered devices need to be plugged into a usb hub that is connected to a power source, before plugging it into the adapter. This is an Android OS issue I believe.

Digital camera, It works well. As soon as I plugged it in gallery opened and it allowed me to import all of the images off the camera to my tab.
USB wireless keyboard. Works pretty good. Just a generic keyboard.

USB wired mouse. (Older Logitech optical) Freaking this is cool as hell!
USB wireless mouse (Logitech MX Revolution)
Not working:

As others have said, what is a 3G dongle?
As far as OTG cables, I got this combo (along with a few other cables from that seller). The OTG cable works fine, as do the rest of the cables I got. The fit is a little bit more snug then the cable that came with my tablet, but everything works great and the quality is very good as well for eBay cables from China.

Hi,
I found out that as long as you have a micro usb to female usb adapter for your phone (I paid £1.99 on ebay for mine) and software upwards of Honeycomb (3.0) it is possible to use the microsoft xbox 360 controller for windows to play games on your device. (note: it wont work on GB Ive tried and failed)
it works for most games such as dead trigger and emulators etc.. even gta 3 but there is no option to configure the controller in gta 3 so you cannot define which button does what
It is as simple as plugging in the usb wireless reciever/ wired usb controller to your device and playing games of your choice.
All we need now is an app that can define the controls for games like gta 3 etc.. (unless there already is one that i havent been able to find)
Just wanted to Share this in the S forum as i had no idea that you can do it and im sure there are others who dont know yet, now you do!!
Please dont post saying you already knew this the thread is for others that dont know about it.
Happy gaming!!

do other games like dead trigger, gta 3 work with your controller or not??? ??
It works fine with the S and the wireless receiver, i havent tried it with a wired controller but everything ive read led me to believe it would work.
I did try it using the play and charge cable but that doesn't seem to work, although i may have broken it trying to charge the controller through the AC adapter for the phone lol :silly:
I never got any 'device power' errors, i just plugged everything in and it works perfectly :highfive: a powered usb hub may work but i havent tried that as i dont own one.
BTW what controller are you using that gives you the power error, wired or wireless??
I have a wired x360 controller and can't connect it with OTG cable, it says "device is using too much power". Maybe it would work with usb hub.

Apparently a powered usb hub fixes alot of problems with flash drives so applying the same logic to a controller may help
Let me know if it works please :fingers-crossed:
Also does anyone know a way of defining the controls for gta 3?
Maybe with some sort of app?
Yes it does. My 360 wired pad works only with a powered hub. I use a,Belkin 4 port hub.

I'm using passive USB HUB and it works.

Photo is with my old Neo V but it works the same with SXS.
I'll try explaining why it works:
The pad after connecting, announces it's name, brand etc. and power requirements. X360 wired controller announces that it can draw up to 500mA. Phone(Neo V, hadn't checked exact values at Xperia S) can give through USB to a device up to 300mA power, so controller gets disconnected.
After installing a USB HUB, even passive, Xperia gives power to it, and doesn't care what else get connected.
In that way we can connect almost everything, but there's a slight chance of burning a power module, when device that we connected will draw more power that source can give. I think that is not likely to happen because it's secure connection and when power draws about max it just disconnect.
I connected wireless mouse receiver, wired mouse and X360 wired controller in one time and it was still working.
:good:
I've never imagined that...
I actually like the microphone on the X360 headset, so i have a wireless receiver plugged on my pc for the controller.
It would be amaaazing to use it on my Xperia U to play some Snes or n64 games.
It's fantastic! I buy this wire an i try on my xperia u
PS3 controllers also work. I ended up being a creating my own OTG cable using an unused male/male USB/microUSB cable and the female USB port from an unused wall charger (and some very basic soldering). After that the wireless Afterglow controller was just a plug-and-play affair.
Though, the safer bet is to just pay the 5 bucks or so for a real OTG cable.
I just got my DNA yesterday, and I have been testing a few USB peripherals to see how they work with an OTG adapter. I was unable to get anything working without an external power source, so I don't think the DNA is capable of delivering power via the port.
My setup consists of the following:
1. Belkin F5U234 4-port USB 2.0 hub
2. The hub is powered via a Mini USB Y-cable plugged into a USB PC/USB charging adapter (I can't seem to find the power adapter that came with the hub, but when I do, I'll test it)
3. The other end of the Y-cable is plugged into the OTG adapter, which is then plugged into the DNA.
From my experience so far, the hub has to be powered, with at least one peripheral plugged in, prior to plugging it into the phone.
I have been able to mount an SD card from a card reader and mount a USB flash drive.
I have been able to use a USB mouse.
I have not been able to get the phone to recognize a DSLR for use with DSLR Dashboard. However, I have not been able to do this on my Touchpad either, so it may be an operator malfunction. I've tried a Nikon D600 and D80.
USB keyboards should work.
Logitech Gamepad is recognized.
External hard drives are recognized, but should be formatted correctly.
Also worth noting is that the phone displays a message saying it's unable to charge the device and to use the supplied charger when the OTG cable is plugged in.
If someone can recommend a decent MIDI app for Android or a music production app, I have both MIDI devices and a Rocksmith cable that I can test with.
It has the ability to do USB otg self powered, just not enabled. Kernel needs it enabled.

What format do you use for your hard drive? NTFS?
I've been plugging in USB flash drive, it mounts, but doesnt see any of my files on it... Also, it completely messed up my media files on the internal card, videos mostly, so I'm basically restoring the phone...
It doesn't seem to work with my wired Xbox 360 controller, sadly.
OTG WORKS

A year ago I bought an OTG cable for my Rezound and of course it didn't work.
So yesterday, I visited the Verizon store to do a little testing with my dust laden OTG cable.
1) The DNA has a default setting for mounting SD cards. Settings--> Storage--> Mount SD. When I ticked this tab....bam!
2) The DNA recognized my Micro SD card from my Rezound phone. Upon opening the music player, the DNA found my music and played a song. Unfortunately, the phone didn't have a file manager app installed and the play store didn't have an account to enable downloading apps.
3) The DNA recognized my Logitech IR USB dongle but I wasn't able to get the keyboard working in the limited time I had. The Logitech keyboard showed up under Settings--> Launguage & keyboard--> Keyboard & input methods.
While I would prefer an SD slot, there is something to be said about being able to plug-in any USB storage device. I plan to return to the store and test further. For me, this is a game changer. I am seriously considering upgrading to this phone.
Now to overcome the case/battery issue. I'm very used to the comfort of the Rezound with the bulkier extended battery/case/holster setup. Fits perfect on my hip & hand, lasts all day and it's rooted with wifi tether. Meets all my needs but 1080p is addictive...

What brand did you buy? I'm waiting for my DNA to get approved and I'm very interested in being able to continue to use my external SD card....plus if game pad peripherals work I'd be highly interested in that.

My rezound's battery life is poor if I'm being optimistic and this is with barely using it. I have tried various kernels, roms, and batterys and I think this is just my third lemon.....Dying to get out of this into something else. I've read the fears on battery life but anything is better then what I have and a quadcore processor is worth dealing with it for the performance gain.
Bought THIS cable on ebay for a couple of bucks. Plugged a micro usb reader (with my 32Gig card in it) in one end and the other into my phone and voila! Complete access to my old external sd. Played my music fine and if I was rooted, I could restore an old Titanium backup. Love it!
So I been reading up on things dusting off my half knowledge of HTC (been since the Eris days) and from what I understand s-off is something that hasn't been real achievable for the phones that don't have am external sdcard. If what this thread is discussing do some more knowledgeable people think that this could be used to obtain s-off? The possibilities of this could be very promising our just wishful thinking!!

Wanted to weigh in. I got an otg cable and used a Usb hub (not powered externally) and both my Logitech g9x mouse and Microsoft sidewinder x4 keyboard work and are powered by the phone. The game pad I have does not work.
edit: some pictures for proof just incase

Also I know its hard to see the lights on the keyboard but they are on as well.
Got the Butterfly X920d today.
USB OTG working without hubs so far for: wireless USB keyboard and mouse, external storage, and most importantly for me USB AUDIO! Gamepads are a bust so far, but yet to try my gamepad (so far Logitech F310, PS3, Xbox 360 for Windows controller not working via USB OTG even with USB/BT controller, even the Wiiremote is not working over bluetooth when it did on my One X last year).
I can't wait for my USB OTG adapter I ordered from Amazon on 12/21/12 to finally get here off the slow boat from China (actually it's Japan I think)! lol estimated delivery still shows 1/18-2/5..but for $0.86 I cannot really complain.

The one i got from amazon just came yesterday. Worked with Sd card reader, will have to try to get a ps3 controller to work. Have no real need for it right now, but for 80 cents, might as well have it for when i do need something.
I've used a USB for a mouse and keyboard and SD card, yes SD must be FAT32 but I use a 32g card with no problems, streamed Movies at ease, between this, dnla and cloud I've got 8 gig free on my phone..
anyone figure out how to get the 360 to work?
Lights power on, but flashes and goes away when Android gives me a notification "Unable to charge"
Doesn't work with USB Stick Center, etc...
I can mount flash drives and such however

I've been waiting for a reply to this since 2013. Almost 5ish years lol.

Bud, I doubt anyone has very many functioning dna's at this point. But I would check out roms that support this out of the box at this point.
