Thanks mate.. just a question .. should i upgrade to ICS using SEUS? i was initially under the impression that u cannot root your phone is it is in ICS, thats the reason why i chose to downgrade it to GB first.

just follow the step by step procedure here..

many thanks, will keep you posted once done...

hi all,
i tried the methods mentioned in the links pos9ted earlier to upgrade the phone to ICS first using SEUS and hen root it. unfortunately it did not work out. i can confirm that the steps mentioned were done correctly. what i have done is have downgraded to Gb and then rooted it. Post that i have installed a custom rom. is there any way i can install a custom rom for ICS now?

AW: How to install ICS based rom on a rooted Mini pro
for most custom roms you need to unlock your bootloader, or look if the rom you like to have is for locked bootloader too. for some roms you need to flash different kernel first. i would suggest you to flash a prerooted kernel with built in recovery. then you can install new rom via that recovery.

For installing custom roms like cm etc you need to unlock bootloader, if you don't want to do that go here and find a rom that does not need bootloader unlock. if you didn't unlock bl, download xparts and install cwm.
for unlocking, go here
then go here find a custom rom, copy zip to sd card, extract boot.img to pc, flash boot.img in fastboot mode of flashtool or fastboot, boot device, enter cwm and flash zip from sd.
thank mihann for the excellent guide.
hope it helped

THIS is a collection of roms + kernels + guides + scripts. You may need it

ICS ROM and Questions

Hey
Currently have a rooted Xperia Mini Pro on 2.3 Gingerbread but it seems the official ICS 4.0 update won't be coming to my SI number so I have a few questions. I have decided to install a custom ICS ROM on my phone so would like it to be as fast as possible and very stable. So got a few questions for you.
My phone is rooted, do I flash Clockwork Mod onto it and then clear the data etc and flash the new ROM?
How do I unlock the bootloader and can I relock it later? Any easy method? And if I need to do this, do I do it before flashing the recovery?
I have apps installed on my SD Card. I know the ones installed on my phone will be wiped and I can re-install those few but will the large games and apks installed on my SD card be wiped too? Or will they still show up in the menu?
Do I flash the kernel that I'll need the same way as the ROM too?
And finally the most important question: which the quickest ICS ROM for the SK17i?
Thanks a lot in advance
There is 2 ways to unlock the bootloader, one official and one non official. I used the official http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ the other one you have to find on the forum. Both is possible to relock bootloader by flashing a ftf file thru flashtool.
Kernel is flashed thru flashtool and the rom thru cwm thats usually included in the kernel.
Apps on your SD card will not show on the new custom rom as the phone doesnt know that you have them installed so you will have to reinstall (or use titanium backup).
First of all I tried the official ICS on my SK17i and I didn't like it, it's alot slower than the GB with no super feauters that deserve it
I am now using the MiniCMSandwich Lite ROM. IT'S SOOO great and working very will. You can find it in a thread here.
Follow the instruction in the thread.
If u unlocked bootloader u can relock it but if u decided to unlock it follow the testpoint method not the official one because it's better.
Anyway .. Installing the official ICS or th ROM I told u don't need unlocking bootloader so don't unlock it.
If u want to root ur ICS u have to read that before Updating to ICS

Right firstly I decided to attempt to unlock my bootloader. It turns out for some reason I cannot unlock it (says not allowed in the menu). So suddenly a lot of the good ROMS are out of the question.
I have decided on the below ROM as Tayyar states that I don't need an unlocked bootloader. I know how to flash the ROM etc but how would I flash the Kernel? Or would it automatically flash with the ROM? I remember reading somewhere an unlocked bootloader is a MUST to flash the ICS Kernels hence my question
The official update has also not been made available for my phone and I doubt it will be so I will stick to my current version and flash the ROM now
About the apps on the SD Card, how should I go about it then? Should I get Titanium Backup and then do what with it? I have quite a few apps, it would be very annoying to need to re-install all of these.
Thanks a lot
Since your phone is rooted, try editing the region codes/CDA strings in /system/build.prop to a CDA code/SI number that has the ICS update. I did this myself when I reflashed my phone to get root on GB. I connected using Sony Update Service and was able to get stock ICS customized for my country using "CUSTOMIZED PH WORLD I 1254-1952"
What I changed was the CDA strings inside:
ro.product.name
ro.build.fingerprint
ro.semc.version.cust
You do not have to replace the whole value, just the XXXX-XXXX CDA string you already have there.
More info on these XDA threads:
[SOLVED] force update by editing build.prop, Also: [WIP] list of CDA strings!
Here's a list of available WT19 CDA codes for different countries/regions.
Credits go to original posters.
Titanium Backup is always a great app to use. Only caveat is, you might want to manually restore apps instead of doing a batch restore; some of them might not work with the jump from GB to ICS. Also it would cause a lot of trouble if you try to restore Contacts Storage from a GB ROM to an ICS ROM. Just stating my personal experience

Kernels can only be flashed with an unlocked bootloader. Kernels get only flashed via fastboot mode. A cwm flash is not possible at the moment.
You can flash custom roms via cwm. Your bootloader is locked, so you have to look that your choosen rom is compatible with your bootloader.

My friend, ICS for Xperia mini/minipro sucks.. Its was slow compared to GB. I've tried all the tweaks, hack and other bullshits.. now i am back to GB. and i am very happy i did. But if you really want ICS, then Minicms/CM9 is the best choice.

This tread should be in Q&A not in DEV.
Anyway do U have bootloader unlocked?
That rom is a 2.3 rom and you need to have and unlocked bootloader. You need to have 2.3 on your device first which would you would find in my signature below. So skip through the tread and find 2.3 Download it and flash it and try the rom again.
Sent from my X10i
Dude u r in 2.1 now. It has a baseband of .49 or .54. GB needs a baseband of .71. So the only option is first u download a pre-rooted firmware image and flash it via flashtool. U will boot into GB. Then unlock bootloader using Laser's method and install custom kernel like DoomKernel.
Follow this method
[RECOVERY image] {v2} X10 GB 3.0.1.G.0.75 [Prerooted + Fixed xRecovery] to insatll the prerooted firmware using flashtool.
Unlock bootloader using this steps from
[HOW-TO]UNLOCK bootloader for X10
Then flash DoomKernel from this link
[KERNEL][X10] DooMKernel [UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS]{Rel:v06}[Dt:10/Jan][FW3.0.1.G.0.75] and boot up into stock rom or the previous GB rom u r using.
For Stock based roms, DoomKernel is simply the best.
For CM7 based roms, use FXP 130 kernel provided here FXP 130 and
For CM9 based roms, use FXP 132 kernel for better performance which u can download in FXP CM9 Thread.

{rom}{6mp WORKING }XPERIA S ICS - CM9{14/8/12} {rom}
but i dont know wich kernel to install
i will write here what i did
so other can have an easy install
thanks to brenty108 for the help
If that rom is in ftf format
Open with 7zip or winrar
Look for kernel.sin
And place it in a folder
In flashtool create kernel
Point it to the folder containing kernel.sin
You should then be able to place your created kernel into firmware folder and flash it
I haven't had much experience with those roms so it's just a suggestion

[Q]Mini ST15i root / unlock bootloader

Hi guys...
Last week my xperia mini ST15i just updated to 4.1.B.0.587
I am going to root, unlock bootloader and install custom rom on my phone, but looks like there is no clear instruction on how to root it...
I did found some instruction though, but i am not sure which is good :
1) http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119
2) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568792 (Should I follow the method for 4.1.B.0.431 ?)
3) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923409
Which method i should follow?
And lastly, should I unlock the bootloader before root or after rooting?
Many thanks...
Look in my signature there's how to unlock bootloader.
You needn't root it before, but if I were you I would downgrade to gingerbread before unlocking bootloader, after that flash a prerooted kernel like rage kernel for gingerbread and your device will automaticly be rooted

Yes these prerooted kernels will root your device automaticly and cwm is built in the kernel

1. No difference. You'll just have ics firmware . You can just unlock your bootloader the official way while in ics and just like that flash a custom prerooted ics kernel .
2. And yes all custom kernels for our device has cwm .
No need to downgrade to ginger bread just for gaining root access if you are going to unlock bootloader!
hit thanks if I've helped!

I would use this method, but you need an .ftf of .587 for your device, if you have one, do it like explained there.
The kernel trick method is okay, too
I suggest you unlock your bootloader first by this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1560613
(it directly unlocks bootloader without writing any commands)
And then install a prerooted kernel via the above mentioned toolkit...
Your will be rooted and then just flash the custom ROM
And the best part... You don't need to downgrade to GB

I was very happy with the performance of GB on my xperia U but there was no root for GB. I was told that in order to get root I have to update to ICS. So I did via update manager and am on the 6.1..54 firmware. Its horrible, slow and laggy.
I used both methods of rooting, flashtool and Bin4ry's both have failed and dont work. My phone cannot be rooted.
So can anyone tell me how I can root this firmware?
Also can I go back to stock GB? if yes please tell me how.
Thank you

Does this method require unlocked bootloader? I mean the one involving flashing .10 kernel and then back .54 one. Sorry for the "noobish" question, but I just began to explore the root/flashing aspects of my XGO and the proccess is completely different from my previous samsung phone, so it's like begining from zero point again at knowledge.

Thanks for the reply. Indeed I managed to root, install CWM recovery and flashed my first rom at my XGO.
Another "noobish" question if you can answer is that I backed up my rom before flashing the custom rom, yet in the clockwordmod folder in internal memory now there is nothing in it. Did the flashing erased my back up? So I cannot get my original FW, since I didn't back it up at my pc? I mean I had greek FW branded to a carrier, so if I need to send it to service, how am I supposed to get it back? To be honest I didn't see a such situation coming so I was unprepared. FYI I flashed [FXP210] XperiaPremiuM™ v4 from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155343. Thanks for your help again!

No i didn't. I still have locked bootloader. that's why i flashed v4 rom for locked bootloader. Yet I may try v5, since it's compatible with LB as well. just i'll have to flash the boot.img through flashtool if I remember correctly from what I read in that thread.
