How exactly would any of us know? If you've searched and couldn't find an answer, then there probably isn't one.

The general public is scared of messing with their phone. They don't wanna risk messing it up. So they suck up the official updates, realize how bad they are, come here complaining about how bad they are, then realize they should've just flashed a custom ROM in the first place.
We will most likely never see an official update for our phones. ATT has already EOL the device and beyond the 4.0.4 update have no plans on updating the device any further.
After the last update from ATT, i would never buy an ATT phone again. It felt like they wanted all of us to upgrade, go through lot of pain and break our contracts(and probably get into a new one too). Most of us who upgraded were out of the 1 year warranty period as well. Not sure what ATT was thinking when pushing the upgrade.

All the carriers do the same thing. This is the main reason I only get unlocked devices and have done so for the past 10 years or so.

Why install a beta test rom is my answer especially if you lack knowledge .
Wait for Samsung to actually finish the job is my view.

JJEgan, thanks thats exactly I want to know. Since I have a daily usage of my phone and its not a spare so I can't afford to experiment and get stuck in tech glitches.
I am just returning to a SGS2 after a few months over the other side with an IPhone 4s....arrrghh don't ask.
But any way When is the official ICS coming out for the SGS2?
Never. 10 c

So Jelly Bean is anounced but when will the S3 get it?
What is your oppinion?
Leave your thoughts. Or if you have news of update it would be great.
Samsung insiders have apparently said Q3 2012 which is any-time between now and end of September, most likely true.

That would be saweeet. I'm not saying that I don't believe you because I want this to happen, but given Samsungs track record with this, I'm a little wary. Maybe since Google and Samsung have been courting each other for a while, Sammy has had access to information that will help them get out releases earlier than usual?

Whatever reliable info you hear about release just add 2 months because Samsung's always late.

There is a very big difference. My only concerns are how well will the smoothness seen in the Nexus with the stock launcher carry over into Touchwiz and how or if Samsung will integrate Google Now since it does some things that Samsung has tried to do with their own software.
I think I am possibly one of the only people who doesn't give a sh!t. Not sure why. It comes when it comes and I'm happy with that.
When ics is stable then I'll worry about jelly bean.
are you guys ok without flash support on JB?... that's the very reason why i won't upgrade even if it comes early...

Why would you "worry" about jelly bean when ics gets stable? Think of jelly bean as an ics+ that makes ics better.. Wouldn't it be good to have? I don't think ics is getting more stable when 4.1 is here..

Thats the only thing i dont like TW coz of updates... they have to rework every new android version to become suitable with it.
Will we see support? or is this solely going to be on our developers for this phone?
By AT&T? Highly doubtful.
Release a free update to JellyBean and NOT force us to buy a new phone in order to continue to be supported?
Silly.
the support we get from the developers here far exceeds the support we get from AT&T...

Why doubt that AT&T will help us out? I'm sure if enough Galaxy II users call in and ask about an update it might happen. Wishful thinking but you never know.

because AT&T would rather sell you a new, subsidized device and rope you into a new 2 year contract than to use resources to push out an update that gets them zero income and might encourage some users to live out their two years and potentially go elsewhere...

As JB source code was released yesterday, we should see devs attempting to port JB goodness on the i777. AT&T will not push our I777 to 4.1. Highly doubt AT&T would support this device anymore...
To be fair, the Captivate saw an upgrade from Eclair to GB.... though it took forever. So, I wouldn't say it's highly unlikely, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

From AT&T officially, the SII already got its two free upgrades and that was from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 then recently to 4.0.3 so AT&T is probably going to put the SII on EOL (end of life) soon as they move on to the SIII, HOX and AtrixHD.
From XDA, it will more than likely be supported for awhile as its still one of the best devices ever created.
Even if at&t came out with an official release (highly unlikely) it would still suck compared to the work done by our devs here

AT&T has already killed off the i777. You can only buy the skyrocket in stores now. They would rather you buy new than update old. Look how long it took our phone to get "official" ICS... Dandrumheller is totally right - our faithful devs are powerhouses compared to AT&T. While AT&T wants to sell us something, our devs want to help. i'm sure 4.1 will be ported, just give the devs time to make sure things work.
I agree! The developers are still moving forward with JB for the GS II and I am hopeful that in 2-3 weeks we will begin to see progress in geting a functioning JB based ROM for I777.
Dont bet on it
I highly doubt we'll get JB. Took far too long to get a rough version of ICS, and I know AT&T won't hesitate to make any attempt to get us to purchase new devices/contracts.

Don't so sure, it might be a while, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28809953&postcount=43
Well I'm sure it'll be a while, but jelly bean isn't the huge upgrade that ics was. I mean it's a big jump, but imo(and that's all it is, my opinion)jellybean may be just a smoothing out and bug removal of whatever they couldn't get done in time to add into ics.

Why would you want to run a stock ROM from the phone company. There are good stable custom ROMs that are better, adopt features sooner, and have better support. For example, there's no better support you can get than from ShoStock2. If you have a question, and it's not abnormal, the developer generally answers you, one-on-one. If it's a real problem, and fixable, it will prob be fixed in a couple of weeks.
If you call ATT you have to get plassed to tier-2 then to an engineer who will prob say it will be fixed in the next release - which will be 12 months.
Why wouldn't you root your phone?? That's my question.
I have not heard anything about it. Is there any word on such an update? Do you think we'll actually see one to take us to 4.2.1 officially?

I was reading something that in february we will get the 4.2 version.
I'm sure since the Note 2 shipped with JB and the GS3(even US variants) got updated I'm sure we'll see an update to 4.2 eventually. I wouldn't say anytime soon though because they just released the update to JB for the GS3 not too long ago. I know on my AT&T GS3 I have a fully functioning build of 4.2.1 with everything working for the most part, just not all the features of AOKP are integrated. Task650 in the AT&T and Samsung Galaxy S series is an amazing developer and I've been running his version of AOKP on my GS2 i777 and GS3-i747 since I've had the phone. Even though AOKP is offically supported for the AT&T gs3 by bajja or whatever his name is(sorry I know you deserve more respect than whatever his name is but I don't have time to look it up lol...so I appologize) Tasks build is the most popular and even includes some extras like the LG Optimus G lockscreen which is awesome. I wish he would build of a version of AOKP for the AT&T Gnote 2 lol.

Maybe his assumption is not totally pointless considering that current 4.3.1 are all aops (?), hence do not include TW which I assume will add additional memory load?!
But anyway no use to speculate, wait and see

Tw is a launcher, that's not the problem.
The only problem is marketing. Samsung want to promote newly cutting edge devices, and counting on the ignorance of 90% of its users, they try to invite a maximum of people to buy a new device to have new features, which are for a good part of them only software evolutions.
So after a 'security delay' to sell for example 40 million s4 plus the recent note 3 they eventually consider the older users..
With all their IT engineers they could have brought us 4.2 in a couple a weeks and same for 4.3.
Programmed obsolescence.
