I've been facing this for long now, as long as one month, today I finally decided to ask.
I've tried emptying battery and then charging fully, wiping battery stats (although I don't believe in it)
I've tried almost every method I knew, still no help. I do get good backup if I don't reboot. 20h total with 4-5h screentime with wifi/data on mostly (1650mAh battery) so I think battery's alright. (I bought S2 6-7months ago)
This problem first started on dorimanx kernel with CM10. Since then i've flashed around 100 times and i've faced it almost on every ROM with every kernel. I used to charge overnight upto a couple of months ago then my friend told don't do that. But I started facing this problem lately.
And Whenever I charge it after sudden battery drop, it charges quite fast, and if I keep using(lets say it dropped from 40% to 10%), it'll last as long as 40% battery should.
Any idea what could be the reason?
Regarding undervolting, I sometimes under-volt -50mv when battery's less and I need to save it and I'm not near charger, notmore than -50mv, my friend (developer) told this much UV doesn't hurt battery.

That sure looks like a fuel gauge. Some guys solve it thru siyah's stweaks I think. There are plenty threads about this issue, look em up, you could find a fix there.
Anyway, when you say "charges very fast after the drop" I'm automatically thinking about a possible faulty battery chip, it charges fast because it was never running on empty in the first place.

Yup, it was never empty, just shows wrong percentage, like I said even on 10% it'll last as long as 40% should. And if I keep it idle it'll go back to 40%within hours. And I did search.

Well...if you are dealing with a faulty chip you're likely to get a new device if warranty isn't void.

I've had my photon for 9 days now, and up until two days ago, my battery would discharge AT BEST 10% per hour. I'm talking about the phone sitting in my pocket with 4g off and nothing crazy running...just draining because it apparently liked to drain. And charging was no better. I know many people have had no-charge issues, and mine would at least charge, but it was still bad - maybe 15% per hour on a good day.
Here's what DIDN'T work for fixing my battery problems:
1) master reset
2) rooting
3) CWM bootstrapping
4) running zip aligning rom
5) making sure nothing superfluous was running
And here's what did work for fixing my battery:
1) Go to sprint store and have them give me a new battery.
Oh my god, what a difference! I get about a 3-4% drain per hour now almost regardless of what I'm doing. Mind you, if I'm doing nothing with the phone, it may only drain a percent or two.
I wish I could see my old battery to compare the two, because I could swear my new one looks different (I saw the old one so much because I was always having to do a battery pull!)...but I can't be sure.
Anyone with battery issues similar to the ones I was describing may want to compare their battery with mine. If it's different, and people with good batteries are similar to mine, then we may be able to specifically request good batteries without just requesting a new battery and hoping for the best.
My battery:
The side you can see when it's in the phone -- the number on it is HF5X and it's 3.8v
The other side -- model L-L-L DC110719 (that's near the bottom)
SNN5890A (that's just above the barcode)
Anyway, I hope that's helpful, but really my point is just that the software MAY not be the issue (although that update is coming OTA on Monday). You may just need a new, GOOD battery.
Also, it's worth noting that I had all the random shutdowns and reboots everyone else had (and my phone ran hot), and this new battery seems to have fixed all that. I haven't had any random reboots/shutdowns since!
Good luck!!
So you had a bad battery... That's like putting new wipers on a car and then jumping ecstatically on one leg because now I can see better out the windshield when it's raining.
Hmm, yeah, I was just complaining about my battery as well, it drains about 10% an hour, just like you said, with almost everything turned off.
I just checked, and my battery model is LLL DC110629, which is different from the OP's "good battery" - can anybody confirm with me that this is a bad batch of batteries?
My battery has never even got warm. And battery life is great.

Lol -- seriously, though, don't miss the point -- the phone was acting up as if it were a software issue, but things cleared up with a new battery. No random reboots, no overheating battery, and no ridiculous battery drain. I originally thought some/all of those things were attributable to some software issue. Anyway, I was just trying to be helpful.
As far as the different batteries go, I thought my original battery was like a grayish-white. Definitely black now. Could be wrong on that, but that's my recollection of it.

My roommate and I both purchased Photon's on the same day. Mine worked perfectly, but his battery life was terrible. This was after both of us had gone through the painstaking process of properly calibrating the batteries and then rebuilding the batterystats file. He would, on average, barely get 6 hours out of his battery while I was getting more like 17. Sprint did a phone swap for him and after the recalibration he's now up around 14 hours on the new battery. I think that there may be something to this story about a bad batch of batteries. While they may not be "bad" in the traditional sense (i.e. they don't have a dead cell; Sprint tested the charging capacity of his at the service center), there is something about certain batteries that don't measure up to the OEM specs that Motorola has set out for this phone model.
Thought it may be fun to see who is getting good life and how heavy their usage.
please specify if you are using an OEM battery.
Here is the best I have had so far, OEM battery.

I lose about 15 -20 overnight as well...I have a bunch of apps installed. If I set it to stock with no accounts (ie, no google facebook weather, no sync) no background data...I lose about 3 percent over night, but that's not very realistic, i need my apps and I'm a heavy google voice, google talk, and facebook user, so all thinks are syncing all the time plus a bunch of apps prolly running bogging down my cpus and the draining the battery. I see marginal difference between faux's kernel and the stock kernel...I still like faux's though.

I feel for your issues!
Lots of people complaining about the i717. Have you gone into the battery usage and checked how much screen time your using. At first I thought this phone was defective till I realized I was using the screen for 7 hours a day! That would fry most batteries.
Upgraded to hotwires ICS compounded the problem for me. Especially as I used Titanium backup to restore apps and settings I should have perhaps just re-installed....
Better Battery Stats (2-3 dollars) will show you which apps are draining the battery while it should be in sleep mode - this can ID serious offending apps.
Cheers - hope that helps.

most of that is sleep/standy time
trust me, you cant actually use your phone AND get a days worth of battery life, not gonna happen
and when i say "use your phone" that means the screen being on
nobody will show you a screen on time of 24hours,even with extended battery
I only get 2-3 hours of screen 'on' time before my battery dies...i also notice the severe drop on the battery usage graph from every time i turn the screen on to do nothing but browse for apps on the Play store. I just watch my percentage drop by 4-5% just from 10 min of use.
I'm running King Kang, one of the very best ROM's i've used so far and battery seems to be holding up...but i'm usually at 50% 4 hours after unplugging, but still testing. I've pretty much given up and try to limit myself from using my Note all the time Lol.
But check out the King Kang ROM. It comes baked with advanced Power Saver settings, SetCPU control, and other AOKP performance tweaks. You might see some improvement in your battery usage.
I get 4 hours screen on time and still get a full days use and then some. Comes off the charger at 10am and has 30% remaining around 1am more or less.
Im on wifi 80% of the day and I don't have many updates that can wake my phone. According to cpuspy my note spends 75% of the time in deep sleep. I wonder how many of the people reporting terrible battery life are not using the stock charger that comes with the phone and therefore not going into deep sleep?

I have anker 2700mah battery which is good..
I've tried extended life battery's 5200 which is good too..
For me having this mobile charger (9000mah) is the best. On eBay I paid about 30$$ its really good in my opinion.

I personally call bull****. Sync must be off, screen filter must be on, etc. No way you will see 7 hours screen on time...no matter what. Not on a stock battery and certainly not consistenty. Maybe airplane mode or some crap.

Is it just me or is AOSP MUCH better on battery vs Touchwiz. It seems that when I run a aosp rom with a certain kernel, it lasts me throughout my whole work day of browsing and using the phone and I still have battery left over.
If I have Touchwiz, I have to connect it to the charger before I'm done with my shift.
Maybe you have some touchwiz features turned on, adding to the drain.

Funny you posted this. I experience exactly the opposite! I have all the TW gimmicks turned off and I consistently get much better battery with TW.

I tried aosp. Much smoother, even when using ondemand like stock touchwiz. Unfortunately the battery compared to touchwiz with most gimmicks off was not great. Not significantly worse... But noticable.

Yeah, I like AOSP much more but battery life is typically worse. However, ocsn usually make it through whole day on either so it's not s huge deal.

Well for me with my ZeroLemon 7500 mAh battery I usually get 3 to 5 days on AOSP
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
So I'm running CM 10.2 now. I have noticed a slight drop in battery but I was able to make it through the day, even staying up later than normal, without a problem. I'll have to give it a few days but the difference is easily noticeable. I'm just not sure it's a problem. I'll report back in a few days.

Umm... Yea say what you want. would you rather carry stock and by the end of the day have to worry about saving battery or be able to your phone all day and not worry about battery...

Umm... Like I said, I can easily make it through a day on either TW or AOSP. With TW ROMs I typically have greater than 50% left at the end of the day, AOSP is closer to 35%. Now, until I need my phone to last more than 2 days, I'd rather not carry around a giant battery that more than doubles the thickness and weight of my phone. To each their own, I'd rather have a charger in my backpack than that thing in my pocket.

Not to mention the lack of cases that will fit his extended battery.
I haven't used TW in a couple of months but from what I remember, I don't notice much of a difference.
What aosp ROM are you guys referring to?

That's been my experience as well.

I get exactly the same battery and with tw and aosp.
So just like the title says. Just bought a brand new X10 from a guy on craigslist. It was sealed and all. I put the battery and charger in. The phone vibrates once and nothing happens. There is no LED charging light on or even screen response.
Pretty disappointed.
The battery is from 2010. I just bought a new one .
I can repeat the vibrate only if the battery is out of the phone. The charger must be connected and if I press the power button it will get one vibration and nothing after.

Update: so I held the back button and then plugged in the charger. The green LED shows life!
The phone still doesn't turn on though.
I guess next step is to repair the phone via PC companion
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
So PC Companion failed to update with error 1000
My heart is starting to hurt since I feel like I just bought a $120 paper weight.
So I wake up this morning and I tried to start her up, boom! Three red blinks. I never seen this . After further searching it seems the battery may be dead OR the firmware needs to be reflashed via SEUS or Flashtools.
I know I'm talking to myself here but it feels good to get my thoughts out.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
3 red blinks is total flat battery try charging it with an external charger that the battery sits in

Thanks for the reply. I have a eBay battery on the way. My impatience has gotten the best of me.
I proceeded to try to flash 2.3 with flash tools and got this error.

Tried again flashing the firmware 2.3.3 for X10a us.
I got this message now
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
With it being a new unopened phone over 3 years old the battery will be fully discharged and more than likely knackered so a new battery will be best option also flashing will not work aswell as it needs battery charge get a new battery in it and leave it to charge (don't turn phone on) offline for approx 12 hours then try booting it up. Will probably 've running 1.6 android as that is what they were on when they first came out

Thank you very much Dunc for chiming in. I highly appreciate it. :good::good:
I know that this device is very old and activity for it is very seldom.
I am giving my Nexus 4 to my wife, as her phone was just stolen (GS4)
So basically I bit a bullet when I bought this phone for $120. I couldnt pass by a brand new phone for that price.
I had no idea of how difficult it would be to get this phone running.
All the points you make are valid. Old battery. Old software. I have done tremendous search in the past 12 hours just to get this bad boy up.
I have found other users with the exact same problems so I know I can do it.
My romming experience is very minimal as well. I only have knowledge of the Samsung S1 and S2. I stopped romming my new phones because they work pretty good out the box.
This is the ROM i got on my phone now http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2197387
Root & Unlock Boot loader and fallow the instructions "A Simple way" on that page i would recommend to download FTF file as even the kernal files are packed in it and you are good to go.

So you're saying, root and unlock the boot loader first. Then flash that ROM?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
Can I root the phone and unlock the boot loader even if the phone won't turn on?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
The phone needs to have battery life to root and unlock the bootloader, well it did when I did my old x10 but still think it's the same with the new flashtools, the phone itself was very customisable once it had gingerbread on and baseband 71 so once it's booted up connect to pc companion and update it to the last update gingerbread and then it opens up a new world on Roms, feralab Roms where fantastic

Thanks a lot.
So a update, the phone was left overnight on the charger. When power button is pressed, I get a green flash and a single vibration.
So im pretty sure this is considered a soft brick.
Seems to be try pc companion to repair or update it might get it working agaib

Yeah I will be trying both programs.
If this fails I'll try to use flashtools. If that fails.
I'm throwing it in the ocean

So I received a "NEW" battery which was manufactured in 2011. The damn thing wont even hold a charge either. I charged it for 3 hours. Tried the update service and it said I still need a fully charged battery.
My last resort, i bought a external charger from EBAY and if this doesn't charge the damn battery, I'm going to throw this phone at the wall.
How am I supposed to get a NEW battery if this phone is so old. Hmmm.
