[Q] APP Development - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this has probably been asked a ton of times, but I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. How would I go about learning to develop an android application? Any sites or resources to help me?

I would recommend first learning Java first, and brushing up on XML and it's use in Android. For learning Android development the official Google Android development training material is an excellent resource, also I would suggest checking out the New Boston Android Development Videos if visual learning is more you style. Also an excellent book is Professional Android 4 Application development, it does a very thorough job of covering the subject matter. If you have any question XDA is a great place to ask questions but also I would check out the Android section of stack exchange.

Thank you very much!

Its a borderline generic tablet. Did u expect there to be devs on this working night and day? Not tryna be rude just saying. They are nice tabs for the price i might add.

Slatedroid.com has a pretty active pandigital Modding community. They don't currently have a specific section for the star, but if you search for it you'll find discussion of the device and there are tools there made for similar pandigital devices that seem to work on the star. Good luck!
Thanks for the help both of you and yes I like it very much. And I am a developer and not at all new to android systems. Also I didnt expect anyone to be working on it at all even I was just asking.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

[Q] [HELP] A newbie to XDA! Hope many would help me. Thanks! :(

Hi XDA!
I am really new to XDA and I just want to ask for help. I have a Galaxy S Wifi 5.0 and I want to have an ICS rom. Wanna know why? It's because of NBA 2k13 on Android that needs ICS. (
From what I have read to other threads, there are still many things needed to be fix on their ICS roms. Just want to ask for your opinions.
What is the best so far ICS rom that I can put on my device? Also want to know the instructions on how to do it. I'm really sorry for being so new to this. The last time I flash my device to GB is with a help of a friend and he's the one who almost done it all. I'm really hoping someone would help me, gave his/her opinion or even tries to answer my problem.
I really want to thank you all in advance! Thank you also XDA!

You can check all the ICS roms here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457
There's 2 ICS roms (most used) for the 5.0, CM9 and RemICS
CM9(supermaster version): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679957
RemICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1692201
To install it, You'll need CWM. Because your device is a galaxy s wifi, it must be a intl one so download the rumirand's custom kernel(The instructions are here):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414565
Hope this helps!
Thanks!

Thanks Sir Supermaster34! I am also reading about your thread! But also the sad part is about the camera issue. I really want to see my device on ICS but what I am thinking is the camera because of my girlfriend. Also bout the NBA 2k13 on android. I am really confused right now. Haha
Btw, I didn't expect that the masters here in XDA are so approachable! So humble and down to earth! More power to all of you and also to XDA! Thank you so much!

We all started as noobies and people helped us like you're (not all the time but a great part of it). So don't necessary think that because we are devs (or seniors), we can't help you.

I just thought this forum would be something like in my country, that some devs just posts instructions and when newbies like me asks for a help or clarification, they would just insist that all of the steps are already in their threads and we should just read it carefully. I am not pertaining to all but some of them are like that. They do not want some interactions or maybe their patience are not that long. I really like to thank you Sir and specially XDA! More power to XDA and all the devs here!
Thanks!

Android Development
I think it's best to get a basic understanding of the elements you're dealing with development from there.
That's what I did.
But when I tried making my own from scratch I just confused myself.
So I did some tutorials that walked me through EVERYTHING so I could understand how things worked together.
Alex
I recommend u t read xda's book, which is a light book with the basics...

I recommend you start with the Hello World tutorial. Then start with tutorials from vogella. You can always use stackoverflow and the android developer website as a resource.
That's what I did!

I would honestly save your cash, and just use XDA. It's the best and there are so many tutorials here already. Books are great, I love them. But by the time you spend money on a book and get it, there is always something new out, or an update that will need more explanation.
I myself own a lot of books pertaining to linux/android, but they have all been passed up by a newer version, etc.
If you must, get the basic oreilly books like: understanding the kernel, embedded systems, etc.
That is just my opinion.

Some people have it working on the original Note using Chainfires plugins but last time I checked they didn't work on JB.
That being said some people have said they got it from the Samsung App Store, whether or not that's true I don't know. I don't know it shows up for me on the Samsung App Store app.

I've tried the samsung store version with no luck. I remembered it loaded but something was off... I think it was the graphics dimensions and colors but I dont remember. Also needs to run on Jelly Bean unless someone can refer me to a tut or rom on ICS which I rather not do. I defiantly would like to stay on JB. I know it works on GNI through Chainfire ICS lol

There is no way to go to ICS unless someone makes a ROM which they won't do most likely.
The only way to get it to work will be if Chainfire updates his mods, which he said he had no intention of doing, or they port it to our phone.
I'm waiting for Rigonauts and the devs of that are real assholes.

Chainfire is in such demand. It doesn't even have to be free. I'll pay $10-15 for an app like this. I'm sure other DEVs can take over the project. If I knew where to start I'd do it my self. Within the last 2 months I've learned to make my own roms edit apks and flashable mods. I don't know that much about programming. Just web languages. HTML CSS PHP and a Little Java. Admins/devs enlighten me please I'm willing to learn and do the work myself. Maybe some help but you guys get the picture I'm willing to put forth effort.

Chainfires app shouldn't have to be completely rewritten, I don't think, just updated enough to work with 4.2. Maybe you should post in the Android Development thread and ask there. The general one for all android, not the one for a single device.
