[Q] Why cant I restore my Nandroid Backup from CWM? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have had my Note II for a day now and I love it but I seem to have an issue. I rooted and installed CWM 6.0.1.5 (modified version by Philz I believe) using Odin and I of course made a backup of my stock rooted ROM before I started flashing anything but when I tried to restore my Nand it says that it cant find the files and cant open the location. The CWM backup file IS there cause I can see it when I plug my phone into my computer but it wont restore and yes... I've tried EVERY restore option there is in CWM - Restore, Advanced Restore, Restore from External, Advanced Restore from External, so on and so on...
Can anyone tell my why I cant restore my Nandroid? This concerns me as well should I ever need to restore my backed up EFS as again, it just wont restore anything from CWM.
Anyone else with this issue or know what to do about it?
Also,
When I choose to flash anything from Internal SD it is now taking me to a list that shows /0, /obb and /legacy (or something like that) and then I have to choose /0 in order to gain access to my actual Internal files.
I actually have 2 of these sets of folders some how after flashing so now when I try and flash from Internal SD I have to choose /0 AND THEN ANOTHER /0 to access the internal card from CWM. This is quite weird and annoying to say the least. This behavior is also shown when searching my device using ANY file explorer and when I connect my phone to my computer as well - IE. I have all of these extra folders showing.
Can ANYONE explain why this is happening and how to avoid it if at all possible? Is this just something new in 4.2? I am currently running Jellybam 3.52 - 4.2.1 ROM.
Please see my original thread in the Note II Forums here for more info... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2088025

[Q] No/ sdcard/ .android.secure found - Nandroid question

Installed Eugenes JI5 ROM. Created backup in Clockwork. Heres what happened:
backing up system
backing up data
backing up datadata
no/ sdcard/ .android.secure found
skipping backup of apps on ext. storage
backing up cache
no sd-ext found
skipping backup of sd-ext
generating md5 sum
backup complete
I assume this is just telling me its not backing up my external sd? Just want to make sure I will be able to restore this without any problems? Thanks.
That's what my backups say too. I think you are correct. Maybe thats for apps2sd which the vibrant doesn't support. That's what I always assumed.
Btw. My nandroids seem to work fine though.

I am getting that error message also. Seems to have started after I restored to a back up of my latest ROM (Nero V5).
Anyone have any other advice on this?
Same problem

is for when you use the native app2sd function of Froyo and beyond to move your apps to the sdcard.
.androidsecure is where they go. As a side note, if you try to look at it in the ohone wth Root Explorer or ES, it will show up as empty. You have to look at it on your PC and make sure "show hidden file" is checked. Sucks that you can't see it on the phone but this has been a long time glitch and really a non-issue anyways since we have such a huge 2gb partition for apps anyways.

[Q] get backed up sd contents onto wiped sd card

Hi,
I backed my sd card contents to my pc, my rooted incredible was a mess it was running CM7. I wiped the card flashed PB31IMG, a stock+ ROM then flashed MIUI now how do I get my backup onto the phone? So my apps + all the information and upgrades are like they were. Ie. all the money and levels I have got to in a app such as drag racing, my Handcent settings messages etc.
I am not sure how to copy the just the names of all the folders so you can see them if that would be more helpful to you please let me know how. If I could get my backed up removeable disk on here without the files I dont need I would be so grateful. Thanks
If you made a backup before you flashed you will have to restore to the backup and backup the apps using titanium backup. If not, sorry, all is lost...

[Q] Phone doesn't recognise internal memory ?

I tried to install revolt jb rom , did the wipes but it didn't install properly
The screen buttons wouldn't work, so I went into recovery and totried install my back up off my internal memory but it wouldn't find it ? Lucky I had wanam rom on the Sd card I istalled that.,
when I've checked it looks like all my files are there on the internal memory but it won't recognize then, this is the same in recovery. Any ideas how to access my internal memory again?
I've tried searching but am away from my computer so it's not easy.
Very difficult to understand your post .
kemeys ???
You say
Off my internal memory but it wouldn't find it ?>>>>
You say
did the wipes
Logic says you wiped the backup or part of it .
Root with the exact same recovery you used .
jje
All the file are still on my phone , it just won't find them, I managed to locate then with root browser lite , but recovery can't find them.
Typing this on my phone, so you'll have to excuse the typos.

update
I've just plugged my phone into the computer, it looks like all my files are still on the internal memory card, but they've been put into a folder lablled 0, just got to figure out how to access that folder on the phone or better still on the recovery. No problem find it on the phone now, just can't access it from recovery.
If i can get into the folder in recovery I should be able to restore my back up, I tried to copy and paste the back up into the clockworkmod backup folder, it copied, but failed the MD5 test when trying to restore.
Update: copied the cwm back up to the external sd card and it worked, so I'm back where I started from, just got to sort out my files and delete any duplicates.

[Q] [Galaxy S] ClockworkMod: Restore failed / preserve content from int. SDCard

Hi,
I also have a question regarding this topic. Does anyone know, what I mustn't do to preserv the content of the internal SD-Card?
I did the following:
1. made a backup copy with the ClockworkMod Recovery (of Android 2.3.6)
2. flashed my Samsung Galaxy S with Android 4.2
3. I forgot something in the old firmware so I tried to recover it.
3a. made a backup of the current firmware with ClockworkMod (I think 5.xx)
3b. tried to restore it (see step 1). this failed.
So - now I try to get a running system on my device. I would like to use the factory rom of samsung, that I downloaded. (last Android 2.3.6)
Can I flash with odin without loosing the data of the internal SDCard? I think I do not have to check "Re-Partition"? Any hints?
Regards,
Georg

Cyanogenmod is a different patrician layout it should have wiped it and if it didn't you could have very easily got a brick you always wipe the internal memory when switching rims and no there's no way to get the internal memory you should have a SD card or not even try a ROM how the hell did you flash cyanogenmod anyway? Side load?

There seems to be some confusion about what you're referring to as your "internal SD card". When you do a backup with CWM, it's written to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/date-derived-folder-name/. This is on your removable SD card. The backup you made of your GB ROM should still be there.
If you used cwm4_fixed_for_cm7-CWM.zip to do the backup, chances are that the date used to name the folder is wrong - year 2000 something... Do not rename it! Some older cwm versions use the name in calculating the CRC before you restore.
Anyway to restore that original backup you must Odin back to stock, install the same cwm version used for your backup, and then you should be able to restore.
Good luck with it
You won't be

Sounds great!
With "Internal SD-Card" I mean that I did not plug in any microSD card. /sdcard/... is not re-partitioned? sure?
I will try to flash back via odin and restore my backup.
Sorry for asking so strupid but I think it is better to ask one more time than making something that I cannot revert. I am no android expert, sorry.
[EDIT}
I flashed it the simple way: rooted my phone, flashed it via CWM (10.1 nightly zip on internal /sdcard) and than rebooted. Everything worked fine as expected. The only thing, thats not working, is the cam - but that is another topic...

twrp (2017 version 18) Restore - files visible only in file manager (Galaxy Note II)

Not my first root and custom ROM install but first one in 4 years. Much has changed...
So, I installed TWRP backed up and installed Nougat. Now I'm trying to revert back to my original system but twrp shows only storage media Internal/external with small sizes and no content. However, in twrp file manager I can see all the folders and files in both internal and external sd card.
I had made a full backup of original Android 4.4.2 (~6GB) with latest twrp (18) that I stored on my external sd card (see screenshot, I hope everything is there!).
What do I need to do to be able to see the relevant file(s) for restoring?
I also have adb installed and it sees my Note II alright but I have no idea how I can use it to make twrp see and restore to my previous state.
If you can help please bear in mind that I'm not very familiar with most of the current developers stuff. Thanks.
If there's a problem with restoring from what I have, I would do a factory reset as I have also saved my most important files separately. I am reluctant though as I have read too much about bricking the phone doing that. Pointers?
Do I have a valid twrp backup in the first place?
This is the page whose instructions I followed. https://www.androidexplained.com/move-twrp-backup/
I backed up directly to external sdcard where a twrp folder with subfolder backups was created. I never had a path with media/0 something that I see people talking about to restore from.
Can somebody please confirm that I have a full backup according to the screenshot I did?
Ah well, live and learn. Just to say that I'm not the only with this problem and it's not phone related either. People with this problem post all over the net! However, iIt looks as though there is no real solution. I would have expected to have a full restore when I hit the backup button in TWRP! This is total BS!
I NEVER had any probs with CWM in the past and I tried a lot of Custom ROMs. It's a pity it's discontinued.
TWRP for your phone doesn't support restoring from external SD cards? That would be odd. I've always found TWRP to be vastly superior to CWM and have installed it on dozens of phones. Why not just move the subfolders to the TWRP folder on the internal storage? The main cause of this isn't the recovery as much as Samsung incorrectly namied the different partitions vs the way Google and custom roms based off of AOSP / CM / etc.
OK, I did the following: took another external SD card and formatted it in the phone. Did another backup with twrp. Uploaded my first backup into the same folder on SD card. Booted into twrp, wiped, and voilá, I found backup folder.
Was able to restore and it looked ok BUT! after seconds the apps one by one started stopping. Now I am in a bootloop with all the apps stopping. I can't get to anywhere.
So much for a "smooth" TWRP backup.
ETA: Finally, I also wiped internal storage and am back to factory settings. Thank god I had the sense to save important folders separately. It's really really important to chose more than one way to backup your files (I also did a myphone explorer backup before the twrp one).
