Hello folks,
In the last week google maps has gone from only having the requisite (for this phone) slow to no gps issues to freezing the phone, causing it to reboot as soon as I do almost anything in maps. This was constant in v4.4 (which I updated to last week), so I downgraded to previous version, 4.0. This appeared to work better for about 3 whole minutes, and then promptly caused the phone to **** its britches. Have any of you folks experienced this issue? The phone hasn't been rooted (I figure I'll wait and see what's what with 2.2) and besides the stereotypical random lagging nothing else causes the phone to lock up and die the way Maps does. Is it the app? the dodgy gps? I didn't spend this much on a phone to not be able to use all of its features, so any help is appreciated.
Cheers,
Dennis
Mine sometimes locks up if I leave gps on. I leave it off and turn it on when it loads up fully

I'll have to try that out. I have gps set to come on when maps fires up. It just irks me that I would have to remember to do such silliness on such an otherwise very nice phone. I hope Samsung gets their stuff sorted on this gps issue., and fast. Lets hope september being when the fix comes isn't just smoke.

I'm getting the same issue. GPS and maps worked once for me after doing the quick fix. Since then i have updated the Maps and now opening it freezes the phone. Literally everything comes to an halt and renders my poor Vibrant useless till I pull the battery. Not a life altering problem but i do hope i can resolve it soon in case I might need to use it.

I turned off GPS and that seems to be the culprit. I even went back to using maps v 4.4 and it hasn't puked yet. I'm definitely tired of this dodgy gps thing.

Has anyone else noticed that the Photon seems to self reboot at odd times. I have yet to have it reboot on me while using it, but my wife's Photon has rebooted on her during active use.
Anyone else experiencing this?
No, but you leave alot of unanswered questions. Is your wife rooted? what is she running (app's) that you are not running?
I have heard of this before and if i remember, delete everything and start new, just putting a few app's at a time back on. When it starts acting up, you found your app!

Shockingly enough, I did suddenly get that twice yesterday after updating YouTube. However I've been unable to reproduce it with any level of consistency at this point.
For the two Photons I have access too (both are doing the same thing), one is rooted one is not.
Apps in common are:
Enhanced email.
ADW Launcher
Car Home.
My feeling is that more people are having this issue they just don't know about it... I found it because I went to recently used apps and there were none, then I started to watch it...

I've experienced it a couple of times while playing music. A song would be playing and then it would suddenly reboot.
I'm using Google Music...
I've heard of that happening before the 154 update came out. So not sure if you're on the latest OTA or Leak why you'd be getting it, unless as someone mentioned it was an app. Which is possible I s'pose.
i did noticed that when the phone is in the charger, when i take a call
while the phone plugged in i hear no voice and the phone reboots
the phone was pretty hot when it happens so i can assume it's a heat problem
(in my case)
Mine has been rebooting more and more frequently. I went to Sprint today and had them order me a replacement. I'm hoping the new one does not have this issue.
Have you tried wiping data and cache then installing the latest leak?

You do that before flashing the latest leak. You won't do any good otherwise.

What latest leak? The 198_7?
Yes sir. That's the latest leak/OTA update. Though the reboot issue was fixed for most people with the 154 update. I previously had that issue as well. So you could try that, but not saying it will for sure fix it. That's really the only idea I have, unless you try uninstall your apps and see if it's an app related issue.
Had same famous random reboot issue, after 154 update and a wipe.
Exchanged for new Photon at Best Buy (no hassle swap) 3-4 weeks ago, So far no random reboots. For me, I believe it was hardware related, noticed the phone was getting fairly warm around the same time the random reboots started happening.

I guess it could be hardware related, but that WAS a known issue when the first Photons came out. I had to exchange mine three times due to the reboot issue before the tech told me it was a reported and known issue and they would be releasing a fix for it.
My Evo 4G and EVO 3D both did this sometimes (both stock, not rooted, hardly any 3rd party apps) when signal strength was low.
My Photon does it much less often (did it once today though, but I'm in Canada roaming). My Photon is rooted, but pretty vanilla.
I have gone with all of the OTA's, and have yet to have a reboot.

There was some dude who had this issue and he stuck a business card at the space near the top of the battery to keep it lodged with the connections near the bottom. Supposed ly this worked....but you probably want to get a phone that works straight up.

From what my friend told me (vzw business rep) less than 10% of the Rezounds have these problems and some of the problems are caused by current problems in the 4G network.
No software release by htc at this time.
I would get the phone replaced at a vzw store where you can play with the phone to see if it works like it should.

Haven't had a random reboot yet.
No WiFi problems.
What do you mean by "connection hiccups"? I can't think of anything that would come close to what I think you mean.
No random apps closing.
Battery is in line with other HTC phones. Sense is just a battery hog. Wait for S-OFF and custom kernels and you'll see leaps and bounds of battery improvements.
I have none of the reported issues...
I am shocked at how long the battery lasts... 20% better than my old TB after ROMS and Kernel tweaks.
I agree, I get battery life than my TBolt did and have not had any of the problems listed above.

I haven't had any of these issues either. Have you tried a factory reset yet? It's relatively easy to do and could possibly help if you are having issues with apps and random reboots.
If that doesn't help definitely return it and get a new one. Hopefully the issues will not continue.
The battery life is going to depend on each person's location.
I got 30 hours when I was at home over the weekend, and 8 hours when I spent the day at the university. The reason being signal strength. I didn't use it any more than I did at home.
Also if you are in a low signal area the phone strains to get the data signal resulting in battery overheating and browser problems.

no random reboot issues here... the GF's tbolt is another story though that thing is awful.
Radio would be nice - i frequently go in and out of 4g areas and the radio does have a tough time picking which one to use.
The rest of the issues noted I haven't seen at all!
for me:
video playback occassionally goes out of sync
while headphones/aux is plugged in and nothing is playing(or at low volume) there's this static/hiss sound
phone gets really hot often(and when it goes over 100F the battery depletes quicker
screen is incredibly sensitive and keeps thinking I'm tapping on things that I'm not
have weird random browser lag(regardless of browser) where ill select something and nothing will happen... then after like 10 - 15sec, the new page suddenly pops up
those are my 'regular' issues. I've only had the phone reboot by itself once & the battery was super hot then. also, I will get FC's here & there but its not common.
I still blame sense/bloatware
[EDIT]: I forgot to mention that sometimes if I go to a 3G area, it will not go back to 4G on its own. ill have to manually turn the radio off/on, then it kicks back into 4G

i was actually impressed with the radio on the phone, maybe thats because i updated from a samsung fascinate which fascinated me as to how bad the radio was, excuse the bad pun
guys, open tickets with HTC and complain about your problems. t hat's the ONLY way they're gonna find out, besides seeing a high exchange rate! let's tell them EXACTLY what's wrong! my open ticket is about the crappy mic recording in the video mode, and i also brought up light leak and the background noise with music. they've escalated me to another hihger support team whos gonna contact me wtihin a week
Ditto on being impressed with the radio. I get -75db in the same metal building in which my hTC EVO 4G could muster -90db at best. The external antenna on the battery cover really do the trick.
Never had a random reboot or force close.
No problems with WiFi (except that LTE is so fast I never want to connect to my home internet!)
I get 8-10 hrs from the batt, on Performance mode, connected to 4G and heavy use. Picked up a spare battery to take me through the evening after I swap it after work.
My stock browser has always crashed occasionally, my incredible did it when it was stock and rooted and my rezound does it exactly the same way, its a software problem. I have had 2 random reboots so far not enough to complain. Other than that great, love this phone.
The only problem I have had is my phone not connecting to 4g but I think juice defender was the problem.

What someone with some time needs to do is get a digital petition up on the forums with phones having these problems ( Inc, TBolt, Rezound etc.) and try to get several thousand signatures to send to HTC because VZW doesn't care. That might get htc to do a software fix.

Over the past couple days I've noticed this as the top partial wakelock on my device. This seems to be at least partially coincident with info propagating across the internet about Google games. There is an apparent associated wake alarm, which ends in .Gms.
While these aren't insanely bad wakelocks, they are irritating to me as I'm not sure where they are coming from. The number of wake alarms from this is pretty aggressive... Previous to this maps was my most aggressive waker by a large margin, and this new one is twice as aggressive as maps.
Is anyone else seeing these? Anyone have any insight as to the source?

Is been around for a few days... I think it is being caused by updates to background Google services, but I'm not sure. Since I don't know what's causing it, chasing it down by freezing stuff or using greenify odd going to take time. I haven't had that time yet. So I am living with it for now.

This sounds very much like the aggregated Network Location Provider that was introduced in the I/O Keynote?? Or is this something different?
It's supposed to use far less power not more... :what: It got a very good reception from the crowd tho.

Could be. I haven't had really any time to chase this yet. But for grins, I installed the app AutomateIt, which if I understand correctly takes advantage of some of those new Google features. I turned on a couple options in the app to trigger things "when in a vehicle". I subsequently saw more of this wakelock.

Sounds like it to me too. And yeah, it probably does use less power than the old default way of doing location services. Our problem is that we have tuned our phones to avoid location services as much as possible, and now we are getting them again.
I'm sure someone will figure out the best way to tame it... or we may find out it's battery-friendly enough to actually use location services now

It may be battery friendlier than the old location services - it doesn't seem particularly drain inducing to me - but it is running on top of the old location services (I haven't noticed any reduction in wakelocks from them) so it does result in some additional drain.

Yeah, I was under the impression that it's kind of up to the apps to actually USE the new service. If they still go about things the old way then the new service doesn't help anything.
I posted the following on my own thread but I'll be moving my discussion here because it's pretty much the same thing.
I noticed recently that I have two Google related networking services running constantly. They are GoogleLocationService and NetworkLocationService. Are both necessary? I remember only one was there before the new Google Services update. I also have noticed an increase in Android OS under Battery usage and a slight decrease in battery life. I think the two maybe related. Anyone have some insight?

I think the issue is that the old service and the new service are running simultaneously and is negatively impacting battery instead of saving like what was promised with the new service. Maybe we need to find a way to remove/freeze the old service.
Wifi is active the whole time my device is draining about a third of my battery. I have wifi pop ups off, always allow scanning off, wifi notifications off, and smart network switch off as well. I have no idea what is causing wifi to drain so much battery but if I could fix it the battery life would be amazing.
Does anyone have any clue how to fix it and or is anyone having similar issues?

I don't have this issue. I'm not rooted or anything. I keep wifi on at home all the time so I can get social media updates and etc. Getting good SOT and no Wifi Drain that can be alarming. [International Version]
Wifi battery drain - only on "enterprise" network, not home wifi
Wifi drain is ONLY on my Enterprise network, no drain on home wifi. The major difference is PEAP vs WPA for security.
Wifi enabled at my work (Cisco infrastructure)
EAP method EAP
The "downlink" arrow is ON continuously, and the battery drains to dead in less than 9 hours. Turn wifi OFF and use 4G (or be on home wifi) and battery is good for nearly 20 hours.
I'd be curious to know if those experiencing the wifi battery drain are noticing anything similar.
Best regards,
Richard
