When you wipe from a custom recovery, you only wipe data and not the internal SD

i'm actually new to this stuff, i've been trying different roms to find what's more suitable for me and i have one problem.
the guides said that when you install a new rom, you have to wipe data and then flash your sd cards, but doingso erases all my apps and everything else, is there anyway to backup those stuff and easily restore them after i've installed a new rom? thank you so much in advance for your help.

Use titanium backup to backup your apps and app data before flashing rom's.
but where will the titanium backup store the backup if i'm supposed to wipe my sd?

First wipe and partition your SD and reboot. Use titanium now to backup all apps. Also now you can copy anything to SD. For example download rom now and flash. As partition already there, no need to partition again.

if u have recovery installed then just Nand backup along with ext backup.. it will completely take a backup image of ur ROM along with sttings and applications installed..
when restoring just Nand restore ...
thanks guys! i'll try this tomorrow, i have to get some sleep first. thanks again!

Full wipe means all data of previous rom you have installed to be wiped clean. All other things like on your sdcard still stays intact. Apps of course get deleted as you put your phone bk to factory settings. That is why is always best to backup your apps with Titanium backup.

Whenever you wipe. Do a factory reset. Wipe cache. Go advanced wipe delvik cache as well as battery. This is a complete wipe and your sdcard contents will stay intact as long as you dont say wipe sdcard.
As for titanium backup works well when you stay on Gingerbread Roms but you gonna pick up problems if you restore apps in ICS when coming from GB. My suggestion download fresh ones.

When I flash with Odin it does not wipe any my files.?? I can install any rom with out no files being wiped! What causing this?

You're not doing a data/factory reset before you flash the ROM.
You mean files on your internal Sdcard? Odin doesn't do that. It resets you back to stock ROM.

back when I made some roms for the BH2 some were like that. It has to do with that is being flashed. technically your data partition does not need to be touched when using odin and it just does system kernel and recovery, there is more to it then that but odin basically acts sort of like an update.zip file if /data isnt getting written then you files will still be there.
Does data factory wipe internal files?

Be more specific. Are talking about your internal SD or other partitions like /data or /cache or /dbdatabase?
What specifically are you trying to wipe and why so that we can better help you fix this.
In some roms it says it will possibility of erasing internal SD. But In recovery and I do wipe date and cache and delvik and flash a new rom. The old files from the last rom still on my internal SD

their supposed to be there...
Wiping data and cache and dalvik only clears out the previous ROM and removes your apps, it doesn't remove anything from your internal/external sd.
are you TRYING to remove stuff from internal/external?
I want to clean format all internal memory and install new custom ROM. The reason to full format is coz lot of garbage in Internal memory in which I am not able to segregate the used app or current app etc.
I have 16 GB internal Memory and 8 GB SD Card.
1. How to wipe all internal memory (tool)?
2. If I wipe, what about CWM? Would it also be deleted? Can I install and run it from External SD Card.
3. After full wipe, will it go in Root mode to install custom ROM.
A wipe using CWM should be fine.

1) go into recovery and select "wipe data / factory reset", or "format /data"
2) No and no. It won't be deleted and you can't install it on ext. SD
3) Install a custom ROM from CWM recovery. If your current system / ROM is rooted the root will not be affected by the wipe / format.
But WHEN I INSTALLED. Custom rom i did wipe data but the old app data was still in the internal memory. I have s3 and its internal memory is 16 gb and some is allocated to system i guess. So is it only wiping the system space not the total internal memory?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
On the S3, the internal "SD Card" memory is only a subfolder of /data.
And /data will get formatted during a wipe....
You can also initiate the wipe from Settings -> Backup And Restore (IIRC) - that will even tell you that everything on /sdcard will be deleted as well
CWM
So is there anyway i can go and clean total internal memory and then install a backup zip from external SD card. I just want my internal SD Card to be totally wiped and install my backup image (/Data only if I am right). Because my image is only 2.5 GB but the space left on my internal SD card is 2 GB out of 16 Gb. Thanks for the help in advance
Cwm recovery
Format data system cache and sd card .
Flash stock rom via Odin flash CF root
Restore Nandroid backup .
Or put the phone in a microwave and delete all storage .

I've asked this question time and time again and no one has yet given me a answer. I can only assume no one ever cleans there internal memory
Anyway the best way to totally clean your phone Ive found is to flash back to stock then go to recovery (stock recovery) select format/wipe from there Stock recovery wipes all of "/data" unlike CWR

I stand corrected after a short test selecting reset from the settings menu does in fact format this space :highfive:
Yes you are right. I did the same
It worked... Thanks

OK, I have a noob question. Is internal storage truly wiped completely when doing a wipe before installing a ROM? I mean say that's your only storage and you have a nandroid on it. Would you lose that? If so, how would people with sealed and non-upgradeable storage ever create and preserve a nandrpid? Copy it to their PC before wipe?
Thanks...

I have noticed there is a difference in Data wipe on ClockworkMod and TWRP. On ClockworkMod my internal Data is left alone when doing the Data wipe. I did a Data wipe on TWRP and I lost everything on internal. I have done this once and only once. It was a surprise to me and thankfully I had all my Ti backups on my external.
These are the options I use when doing a wipe with TWRP:
1.Cache
2. Dalvik Cache
3. Factory Reset
4. System
5. Flash Rom
I hope this helps.

No its not. I factory reset before every fladh and my internal storage is always intact. Just don't select the wipe internal storage option.

This post gives a bit of technical explanation that I found interesting, re the differences in how twrp handles Wipe Data vs Factory Reset:
