[A] How to identify a fake Samsung battery - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As a lot of people I don't want to run out of juice and ordered a couple of "Genuine Samsung" batteries on ebay (one for myself and one for a friend). Paid 6.50 pounds each that is approximately 10 dollar. I received the items accordingly and unpacked them. As a technician I checked them intensively on al sides also in comparison with my original battery. Off course, I knew this sounded to good to be true, but the sellers feedback was good and no feedback reported fake goods.
First thing I noticed was that the serial number on both batteries was the same, this can never be the case with a serial number
Second thing is that the contact are lying deeper in the battery housing than the original one
Third thing is a small placard next to the contact points to cover two small holes of the assembly.
Than I started searching on the internet and found the following text which I qoute:

We particularly focus on the Battery to discuss, because it is difficult to identify real and fake battery. looking from the appearance of many fake Samsung batteries, it almost can not distinguish the fake from the real, however , the fake will not become the real, teach you a few methods of identification, real and fake battery will be crystal-clear to present in your eyes .
Method 1: Check the new battery whether there is a film on the back
when you buy assembled battery, there is a normal film affixed to the back, however the original battery did not have. it is the easiest way of identification.
Method 2: Check the battery positive labels work
the label of the original battery is pasted precisely and its size matches with the size of the grooves, there is no obvious gap; the work of the assembled battery(Cell phone accessories wholesale) is usually less stringent , the size of the label is inconsistent with the battery grooves, giving the impression that the label is not affixed rightly.
Method 3: Check the litter bin symbol on the label
there is a small dot in the circle of right corner of the original battery‘s litter bin, but if you observe carefully, you can pick it out; there is a solid round dot in the bottom of right corner of the assembled battery’s litter bin, it is said that a small number of positive labels of assembled battery also have a small dot , but you'll also find that the patterns of assembled battery’s litter bin slightly larger than the original battery. This point may require you to spend more time on observation, if you do not have experience, you can pretend to select several types of Samsung cell phones, then take the opportunity to make a comparison between them, you can see which one is real and which one is fake.
Method 4: Check print quality of the letter under the bar code on the label
printing font of the original battery is rather special, scan lines are constituted by the dot, they are clear and grainy, the "/" between “S “and “N “slash is very obvious and serrated (sorry picture is not clear); Print quality of the assembled battery is obviously much more rough.
Method 5: Check the battery's internal parameters
Enter your cell phones "* # 0228 #", the original battery generally can display manufacturer, capacity, voltage, temperature and other information. Press the "^" button on the navigation keyboard to page up, the percentage displaying in the bottom of the page is the remaining capacity. The assembled battery does not display electric battery manufacturer, capacity.
Method 6: Check the battery contacts
Samsung original battery(Cell phones wholesale) metal contacts are bright and neat; assembled battery contacts are jet-black and the arrangement is irregular. If you observe closely you may find the differences between their contacts, but it is difficult to make a judgement if there is no comparison. it seems that it is really a bit difficult.
Usually one original battery will take you more than 100 yuan, while assembled battery can be purchased for about ten yuan, a huge difference may let many people fond of bargain, when you purchase cell phones, you can use the aforementioned ways to distinguish carefully, let the thing be worthy of the money.

I hope it is clear for everybody. Cheers .

All very interesting but sadly complete rubbish. First of all the serial numbers are in fact batch numbers, so if you buy two batteries from the same batch they will have the same number.
Without picking up on every single point individually the differences in labels and casings on genuine original batteries are simply because they are made in different factories around the world and as with any factory they have different equipment. In fact the labels are almost certainly produced by label printing factories and the batteries are, in many cases, manufactured for Samsung by battery makers rather than by Samsung themselves. Think about it - there are literally hundreds of millions of mobile phones sold around the world every single year which means hundreds of millions of batteries - do you honestly believe that every single label and battery are going to be identical?
I have sold thousands of Samsung mobiles over the years and have seen many original batteries (as supplied with the phone) where the labels look completely different. I have purchased batteries directly from Samsung with no small dots on circle on the waste bin. I could go on, but sorry, the above post is simply an opinion and nothing more with no foundation whatsoever.

When you buy "genuine" batteries for 10 dollars, you should realise that you're not probably gonna get real goods. "Genuine" batteries go for atleast 20 dollars.

Why do people insist on quoting the OP???

Generally yes, but there's nothing stopping the china factory from doing a little business on the side by selling the batteries online directly to the end users.

Except laws and contractual agreements. Anything they do "on the side" is illegal so its the Black market. Its best to assume if its too good to be true - it isn't true, even if sometimes those products are genuine

On one hand you're right on the other hand I'm right lol.
I know for a fact that some official Universal Music/Studios factories (that press discs) also press pirate discs by night (when the factory is supposed to be closed). So you know, you never know
Specially when it comes to places like China, where western thinking and logic doesn't mean antything.

I never said you were wrong. A genuine product leaked on the black market though, is not really genuine, even if by manufacture, it is genuine. When it leaks to the black market, all integrity is gone. Half of what makes a genuine product genuine, is warranty.
But if someone says, a genuine battery is $20, anything that is $10 is fake, they're not correct. Sometimes a genuine product on the black market can be $10, however, chances are that $10 battery IS fake. You cant keep buying $10 batteries hoping they will be genuine.

One of the easiest ways to identify a fake battery is to look at the weight. I bought a so called "genuine samsung battery" for my S3. When I weight it on my precision scales, the fake battery was 20 grams lighter than the original battery.

After being burnt once before after buying a cheap battery for my BB off ebay, I'd only buy batteries directly from the manufacturer, like Qcell, Zerelemon... Are you guys willing to share the names of the sites you bought the dodgy batteries from?

And level block size has anything to do?
I did the " *#0228* " and the original battery which came with my Note 3 reports "Level block: 8" while the eBay one I bought through Auction reports "Level block: 4"
Weight: Original one weights 54,60 gr. while the one from eBay weights 43,54 gr. That is 11 grams less...
I just wanted to ask this before I start peeling them off...

The number of level blocks appears to correspond to the current charge level (43% = 4 blocks or 96% = 8 blocks). The important thing should be the range shown ("0~8"), and when 100% charged, does both batteries say "8 blocks"?
The weight is a good indicator that it may be fake. Probably it's using a smaller inferior cell padded with a plastic filler to make it same size as a genuine battery.
Anyway the idea that the BatteryStatus screen can help check if it's genuine appears completely moot because the screen does not show any manufacturer info about the battery, as was originally claimed in OP's post. Even with the stock battery, all it shows is a bunch of numbers. It doesn't show the manufacturer (name) or capacity (mAh) even with the stock battery.

I bought 2 month ago one of the ebay-'originals' for 14€. Approx. 70% capacity and not grewing during 3 charches. I sent it back and the substitute showed the same. I bought a battery in Samsungs-eStore then (30€ incl shipping) and everything's fine: began with 85% and grew upto 100% after 3 charges.
All labels are different. The weight of the fakes is the same as the old original, the new original differs. So keep it simply and buy from Samsung.

Purchased a battery from eBay India for around (INR) ₹700 around August end.
It got swollen like a bread in oven (within last month)
Today got it replaced from service center for brand new one
I had receipt of ₹1600, VAT paid, though I paid only ₹700, which made the purchase completely authorized.
PS. Before purchase, I clearly asked the seller if I can get this battery and walk into service center, will it be valid. He responded positively, and it worked
So for me, it was like getting genuine battery for $11 :good: :good:

Cheap, seemingly legit, extended life battery

Now that I'm using Android and my phone's life has been extended, I wanted to extend its battery life too. Branded extended life batteries are really expensive at retail. Seidio and mugen both sell 3000+mah for something like $80. HTC sells a smaller 2150 for around $40.
According to batteryboss.org, HTC's 2150 battery (rhod170) is pretty much the only battery that meets its mah rating, so I went hunting for a good price on one. Found this one for $5 shipped, or $7.51 for two if you want to better your odds. Figured it was either fake or used or otherwise had issues, but I got mine in the mail and it has zero contact wear and looks the spitting image of the legit rhod170. Seller has 5 left at the time of this posting. You can easily find other batteries advertised as rhod170 for $10 shipped, but it's always anyone's guess if they're legit or not. I had to roll the dice with no idea, and I thought someone else would appreciate hearing that this particular seller shipped 2 rhod170s that very much appear to be legit. Took about 1 week to receive from NY.
You need the extended cover to go with it. The cheapest I could find was from batteries4less, which you can shave another 10% off with save10 coupon code. It does look exactly like the OEM, with both HTC and verizon branding, however my particular one bulges a little in the middle when attached, like it isn't latching as well there. It isn't really noticeable unless you're looking for it, and it could be the fault of one of the drops my phone has taken over the years. Shipped quick, maybe 3 business days.
With both battery and cover, YMMV. I won't know for a couple of days at least what the lifespan is. And I'm still looking for a program that I can use to get accurate, easy-to-compare bench information from. Suggestions on that front are welcome. My original battery 1500 mah battery has been in use nearly 24/7 for almost 2 years. I'm not sure a comparison to that would be helpful to anyone.
See (someone else's) pictures here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=578388&page=2
How much longer is the battery working?
Since my last battery was in use for almost 2 years, I'm not sure comparison to it is worth anything. Battery life was atrocious. I basically kept it perpetually plugged in with just a few hours a day away from an outlet of some sort. I had cables everywhere to keep it charged. Now I can go 2 days of moderate use without plugging it in. I'm very pleased, especially given the price.
Couple of months ago, i bought the rhod 170 from ebay, using it since than, but to be honestly, the batterylife isnt much longer than the original one.
I think i have bought a FAKE one, this one is RED ( not black like at the picture )
See picture below.

5usd is very cheap ( maybe too cheap ) are you sure it is orginal htc battery, and no chinese garbage?
This website had the same battery

It looks like the orginal htc battery, you can also look to the video with the guy who looks like he woke up couple of seconds ago, and inmediately started making the video. The website you gave is 6 times cheaper.. isnt that a little bit
suspiciously?

I have no new information. Mine still looks real and it still gives me better battery life than my OEM 1500 ever did, even though XDAndroid isn't as battery friendly as winmo.
If you're considering grabbing one of the same, you're gambling, just a little less than if you got a similarly priced rhod170 from a seller with no positive feedback yet. You can hedge a little more by buying 2 and hoping at least one works to spec. If you want a guarantee, you'll have pay $40ish to a well-known outfit that takes returns.
The cover on the picture you posted looks very thick, thicker than you actually need.
I bought this one
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HTC-TOUCH-P...ccessories&hash=item23148ba3ce#ht_1765wt_1397
Its a high quality cover, and its smaller than the one you showed. No need to carry a ticker phone if it can be smaller . it fits the 2150 mah battery perfect
Looks the same thickness to me (though black is a slimming color), and there's no spare room in mine. Both are made by HTC, it's just the one you got was designed for the GSM while mine was CDMA.
I have ordered 2 pieces. lets see what it gives me. Do you have any information about how to use it first time ? ( fully charge ) downcharge etc..

I've read varying views on that. Lithium Ion batteries like these don't have memory effect, however, there might still be metering issues (relating your phone's ability to measure how much battery power is actually left). In android, I used a utility that wiped out past information collected on my 1500mah (don't know if there is a winmo analog) and did a full charge and full discharge right off the bat. Since then, I've kept it topped off as there is unanimous agreement that you shouldn't discharge lions often.
That's what I did, but I can't promise it's the best way. I have no inside information, that's just what I've culled from contradictory sources.
Do they also ship to the netherlands?
I couldn't tell ya, but since the particular seller I linked is out of stock of the batteries, I'm not sure it matters.
i like chichitec's slim extended battery, bought 2 of them with a wall chager for $30 a while back, 1900mAh each. One of them lasts me 2 days but I full charge at night out of habit and not wanting to be stuck without phone on 2nd day even though I only reach 60-70% after first day lol
fortunz, i see you have a rhod500, do you know if that battery works with a rhod400 as well?
---------- Post added at 07:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:29 PM ----------
Correct me if I'm wrong - but after searching, it appears the answer is yes.
Would the BTE6875 be equivalent to the RHOD170?
My 2 cents
Mugen batteries are the best. They are the only extended slim batteries I have ever tried that actually live up to the name extended and outperform the stock batt. I have had 4 of their batteries for various devices and this week I just got the first for my Rhod and what a difference! Don't know why I waited so long to get one... I guess the rhod was just supposed to tie me over til WP7 came out... but now it looks like I'm trying to hold out for windows 8 (or 64bit cpu).
At any rate you can try to find a good one on Ebay for $10 and buy 4 different ones in the process, or you can do what I would recommend and spend $35 just buy Mugen.

hyperion 2600mAh galaxy note battery? proved it's fake

hi bodies,
i purchased a Hyperion Samsung Galaxy Note from amazon a week ago, which someone recommended in this forum. it's mark 2600mAh on the back of the battery, so, should be last a little longer than my stock 2500mAh right? but after a few cycles, i feel strange it looks like last only half as long as my stock battery.
i teared off the label whether this battery is good or not, see what i found, there is some code LS514664AR 1750MAH. 2011/12/19.
accoding to my mechanical engineering experience, LS514664AR is the serial number of battery cell, and 2011/12/19 must be the date of manufacture, and 1750MAH is the real capacity of the cell, which means this battery is 1750mAh.
much more less than the 2600mah they marked, and also the 2500mAh original.
i was so disappointed with this company, they made poor products for us, and cheat us more over! i will never trust this company again, anyone else have their batteries? just tear off the label, you can see what you get.
my attachments below
nice find, thanks... never trusting non-oem batteries again
You shouldn't trust any battery, even one that says OEM, from Ebay or Amazon. Especially when they are charging $10 for what should be a $25 battery. When I see that I always order 2 because I know they are fake and will not last as long.
I got two of those Hyperion batteries and a wall charger off eBay for $25 shipped. Even if they are 1750mah, they won't damage the Note they just wont last as long. After SEVERAL cycles they are lasting me 4-5hrs of steady use, which for $25 is worth the money for an emergency backup(s).

I agree 100%. People are foolishly buying these cheap batteries thinking they are getting a great deal but what they are getting is cheap counterfeit battery that doesn't perform as well as the original and could do damage to the phone.
Be smart people, pay the extra money and buy your batteries at legitimate vendors, your mobile provider or Samsung directly. If one of these cheap batteries happen to explode and leak all over your phone you can kiss you warranty goodbye.
The OP should write a negative review of the product on Amazon and post pictures of the counterfeit battery backing his claim.
Arent people just asking too much? If they dont mark it high enoigh will u buy? And if there are no non-oem companies around, will u complain oem charging 30 bucks for same capacity battery? Though i agree company shouldnt mark high, but at the same time these companies.need.to be around to keep cost down. Else oem charging $100 for battery is justifiable (like apple!)
I have a 5000mah hyperion battery for my galaxy note, and I ripped off the label and it says "1500mah" directly on the battery... further peeling of the sticker shows what appears to be 3x1500mah batteries under the shell.. so 4500mah on a 5000mah advertised battery.

I also purchased the Hyperion battery pack, and the only problem i have had with it, is that the charger broke 2 weeks after i got it. The batteries seem to be lasting pretty close to the same amount of time as my original battery: 8-10 hours w/ moderate to heavy use. I have experienced ZERO problems with the batteries themselves.

it's two inside, if you compare the thickness of your OEM battery, you will find hyperion 5000mAh seems doubled, which means 2*1500mAh=3000mAh.

Yes the Hyperion battery is just one of many batteries with exaggerated claims.. Its lower than claimed capacity became clear to me when I compared its gram mass to the OEM, and it was 10 grams less... Thanks for sharing your tear down finding... I am hoping to to build a data set to calibrated the general capacity and battery mass... Given the generic chemistries and similar constrained volumes they all share in the note.

I don't usually buy cheap stuff... but if there are three 1500mah batteries, or even two 2500mah's underneath that label im sure it would still last...
what you think?
just got my anker 2500, so amazing with this battery, after 2 full cycles, my BMW pro shows it's 2656mAh, even more than what is marked on the battery. I can say it definitely last longer than my stock one, which improved the BMW pro.
here is an other one's review in this forum.

hi bodies,
i purchased a Hyperion Samsung Galaxy Note from amazon a week ago, which someone recommended in this forum. it's mark 2600mAh on the back of the battery, so, should be last a little longer than my stock 2500mAh right? but after a few cycles, i feel strange it looks like last only half as long as my stock battery.
i teared off the label whether this battery is good or not, see what i found, there is some code LS514664AR 1750MAH. 2011/12/19.
accoding to my mechanical engineering experience, LS514664AR is the serial number of battery cell, and 2011/12/19 must be the date of manufacture, and 1750MAH is the real capacity of the cell, which means this battery is 1750mAh.
much more less than the 2600mah they marked, and also the 2500mAh original.
i was so disappointed with this company, they made poor products for us, and cheat us more over! i will never trust this company again, anyone else have their batteries? just tear off the label, you can see what you get.

Question, did you buy your battery directly from Hyperion, or some third party vendor?
Reason I ask, is since someone has mentioned, and I've also have seen it suggested on some youtube videos, that because it has some slight name brand popularity as an inexpensive alternative, third party vendors could make even cheaper copies/knockoffs.. To get more sales?
I would be more weary and ready to warn about the vendor you ordered from. This is just a suggestion, for all we know the actual Hyperion battery manufacturer maybe the culprit. IMHO YMMV

I wonder if there are two of those 1500 in that...
I found some vendors on ebay selling what seems are legit "Samsung" branded batteries. Check this picture out;
Made in Japan / Finished in Korea, except that in spanish on the third line, it translates to Made in Korea / Mounted in Korea... Oops..

Cheap 3500mah battery...ripoff?

Anyone try out this battery? I'm not sure if it's really good compared to the more popular Sedio Innocell batteries. This one is a really cheap price compared to the Seido's right now since it's 55% off...and it's a little more power. Is this too good to be true or should I get it?
I won't recommend it, a friend of my bought it, at the very moment he started using it, issues began to show on screen, got lots of bugs, even wiping battery

People: stop listening (and reproducing) the archaic fears of China-made hardware.
Every manufacturer makes it in China and then add their profit and voila-.40 dollar batteries with original cost of under 5!
I have bought at least a dozen batteries for cell phones from ebay, always choosing the cheapest. I never had a problem.
Try before you moan!

Check out this item I found on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=180784021815
I'm wondering quality of this and ecell gold brother.
Bought it. I am quite sure that these ampere numbers are way to optimistic.
My experience with several non original batteries throughout different android phones is that talking, about same size batteries, ther is nothing like the original one.

Unfortunately, the fakes often look exactly like the real ones. I guess it's not difficult to copy the label. The only way you know for sure, is to buy it from a reputable manufacturer like LG.
.... and yes, that is a fake. The giveaway is the missing white dot next to the contacts on the top of the battery. It's a white dot that turns red if it gets wet. The really good fakes have the white dots though. They are cheap enough from the LG website to just not risk it.
Kuba, did you bought it in Warsaw from "BRICK" shop? I got exact same concerns about this battery not being genuine.
So far, I have found three ways to check if the battery is legit:
1: The white dot on the top side as mentioned previously. Many of the batteries on ebay and other other sites does not have this. If your battery has the white dot then it's a good sign.
2: Legit batteries should have tiny little holes on one of the gold-plated contacts. I think there should be somewhere around 3-4 of them on a legit battery.
3: The temperature reading on a legit battery should increase when the phone is heavily used (like playing a game) or when charging. If the temperature stays the same then this is most likely a fake battery (on my fake battery, the temperature stayed at 24 degrees even when the back of the phone felt really hot). Ampere is a good app for checking the temperature.
This is a small summary on the things I found was different from my original battery. The labels on the fake batteries are also often spot on so they can be quite hard to differentiate.

/Fred
Also expect to replace them every 4-6 months. I've gone trough one of them that actually got swollen after 5 months. It swole so much that it was pushing the screen out of the frame so the backlight came trough. The bad thing is (i hope an error) that the ones from lg now are 40$. So there's that. The one that swole was 12$ from my local phone repair shop. Thank god that they are removable.

Whoa! That's scary! That is in no way normal at all and it sounds like you got a faulty battery. After going through a dozen batteries for my 2 G3s over 3 years, I never had that happen.

I just noticed that too! They were only $15 dollars for so long! What a bummer indeed. :crying: They probably increased the price due to a shrinking stock, lack of manufacturing, or too many people mass purchasing them and selling them for $30 elsewhere.
I bought a replacement battery from LG directly, turned out to be **** as well, ended up going back to the original battery. the OG battery may have lost some capacity, but at least it doesn;t make my phone reboot like crazy and suddenly lose 20% of its charge.
To the extent it;s even worth buying a new battery for a phone this old, I'd suggest NOT paying the highway robbery of $40 LG is currently charging.
i am up for a replacement too. From lg, with shipping its costing me me 38£ !! 4lg.co.uk/product.pl?pid=5148198
Any experiences with GadFull batteries? I am just scared that a non lg battery will blow up given our devices tend to get pretty hot.
I can personally recommend this:
Power Bear LG G3 replacement battery
I've been using the Tothl brand and its been legit, they claim 5000mah but its closer to the original. Can't beat the price 13$.

No problem. Just as an update and for the benefit of anyone looking for more info on fake batteries, I actually have four original Samsung S7 batteries from a mix of suppliers (SDI, Amperex, maybe one other?) and they all weigh 41 grams on my scale. I had a fake that weighed 39 grams.
Another thing you can check is to use a barcode scanner app and check the barcode to make sure it matches what's printed on the battery *and* that it decodes to something in the proper format. The genuine battery's barcode should decode to a Samsung part number (which should be correct for the model of the battery) plus the text printed to the left of the barcode, plus some numbers. The barcode on the fake S7 battery decoded to the string "GH43-04575A+DL1H217HS+009488". GH43-04575A is the part number for an S7 Edge battery (obviously wrong) and the text printed on the battery was "DL1H226C5" which didn't match the barcode either.
For a third check, all of the ink on the battery label could be rubbed off with a finger.
The fake battery worked great at first but after two or three weeks it would barely last 12 hours with moderate usage.

Thanks for all the other pointers and it seems that my battery is a real one
I bought this directly from amazon for 12 euro while samsung guided me to a official parts seller that sold the battery for 45 euro so i thought it was worth the risk and glad that it turned out alright.
Only problem i have with the battery is that it looks like it came from a phone because i can see little damages and still see some glue on the back on front from the removed white sticker.
So my S7 Flat, which I bought in October 2016, had started suffering from relatively more poor battery life during the past couple of months. Getting an OEM replacement at the local Samsung Service Center was going to cost me $70.
I tried my luck with a $12 Moxom battery and it's been 2 weeks now where I'm using it and the results have been tremendous. My Screen-on-time is now back to 5+ hours.
I thought I'd share this with you guys and the links as well:
