[Q] CM10.1 on the GS2, any problems? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well it appears that there are only nightly builds for the i9100, but I can't see any known problems.
This is my mum's phone, and she has been telling me it's really slow so I thought going from 4.0 stock to CM10.1 4.2 would really help that, with project butter and stuff.
She uses wi-fi tethering alot, and I've seen on alot of custom roms that that doesn't work, but as I said, I didn't see any known problems for the CM10.1 nightly build. I don't want to flash her phone with something that'll make her lose functionality.
Thanks guys

Install the samsung JB leak..I would not recommend CM since it is still under development. But there are no big issues i myself use it. But since its your mom's phone its better to keep it stock.

Also there isn't Project Butter in CM.
But did you flash with a full wipe? Quite strange your mom does notice it's very slow, because there are a lot of people (understatement) who are really satisfied with the performances of CM10.1.

I've read it wrong. But with 4.0.4 I've never noticed anything slow or what so ever

Not your phone, not running stock & an 'average' user using it day to day sounds like asking for problems to me. And potentially a lot of you playing 'tech support'.
If it were me, I'd be leaving it stock.
Do a factory reset & a clean install of apps/etc if it's a bit sluggish (remember, you don't have first hand knowledge of this, just what she's told you & also remember she is an 'average' user, so it may be running just fine most of the time).

Why not Chameleon Rom?
I suggest to use this rom because it has the CM layout but its samsung base so no bugs

I'd suggest better to flash & use that XXLSJ firmware, rather than CM!

Most stable CM9 nightly for SGS2?

Hi,
I have just bought a SGS3, and want to give my old S2 to my wife.
She loves CM on her S1, and wants it on the S2 (I actually stayed with stock..lol)
I am best putting CM7 onto the phone, or are their any stable CM9's out at present?
I just want the least hassle / complaints from her, however would like to keep it on ICS.
Thanks.
Latest CM9 nightly (I've never had any dramas with any CM9 nightly), but if you want something that will give you minimal issues guaranteed (and minimal you playing tech support), might want to stick to stock ICS. Some people have little issues with different custom roms (normally attributable to setup/use), tho many people don't.
I'd play safe given it's not your phone & you don't want to create work for yourself ;-)
Thanks for the reply, will try out the latest nightly...if it give her issues will revert back to stock. Thanks.
No probs ;-) Sounds like a good WTG.

Quick ParanoidAndroid ROM question

Okay, I have been on Jelly Beans ROMs since practically build 1, it seems. I have never tried out another ROM on this device. Something here lately has really gotten my attention though, and that is the "Halo" usage from ParanoidAndroid ROMs. I spent almost an hour last night reading through the bazillion pages on the Original Android Development tab for this ROM (PA). There were so many mixed reviews about what works and what doesn't on the latest release that I am not sure what to think.
My question is, ultimately, is there a build of ParanoidAndroid for VZW Note 2 that is "mostly" bug free (GPS, graphical issues, etc)? I even looked at JellyBam, but there is even less of a clear message with that ROM. I need something for a daily driver and really don't want to have to do work arounds for the things I typically do on my device (Phone Calls to Netflix and all between).
Anyone have any ideas? Like I said, the only build of Paranoid I could find was the newly released one that looks to be built off Android 4.3 (Cyanogenmod, I assume). If that is the case, from what I have read, there are a few things that aren't tied up completely on it. Older build of Paranoid maybe? (Where do I find that?)
Thanks for the help guys.

You can try the 4.2.2 version of paranoid android if you want to be conservative. I think it was 3.68 or something

I'm running build 3.99, have been for a month now. Out of 10 I give it a..... 10. There's really no bugs at all, I hardly get graphical issues but they do exist. I got a GPS lock and you can by getting a lock in a tw ROM in maps, then immediately flashing as you would a normal rom. But honestly this is my favorite ROM I've had on all my android phones so fast and stable and great battery life. Hope this helps.

I think I am going to go with to go with a 4.2.2 ROM just for overall stability.
In regards to gapps, is the general rule of thumb just to use the most recent?

Yeah basically. Just make sure you download the one for 4.2.2 not a 4.3 gapps
Okay, got version 3.68 installed and proper gapps. Haven't had time to really dive in to get everything set up. Everything is running smooth and quick. The only issue I have at the moment is that I can't get a 4g connection.
Any ideas?

[Q] Issues with the new Cyanogen-mod Installer on s2 i9100

HEY GUYS!!
So im super new to XDA forums, but i came here to get some help. So ive never flashed a custom ROM before but ive read on it extensively and have an idea of the terms and what-not. i recently flashed my s2 i9100 to the latest cyanogenmod rom using their app and desktop aid. i really loved the new look and feel on my s2 and i was positive Sammy wouldn't be rolling out any future updates on this hardware.
After the honeymoon period was over i came to notice the grating little issues that made me switch back to official jellybean TW. The cyanogenmod firmware they flash with the app is 10.2, so its jelly bean 4.3. It was a "stable" firmware, so they say. Heres a list of the problems.
1. YouTube became very very pixelated and i did some searches and couldnt find a fix.
2. Games like Temple Run 2 performed much worse than with the stock OS, lots of frame skipping could be seen, which makes a game like TR2 unplayable.
3. There were alot of crashes on the stock cyanogenmod launcher, especially after installing apps.
I really appreciate the work cyanogen does but i posted these issues on their forums and i feel like im an isolated incident being that noone has posted on it.
SO IF THERE IS ANYONE OUT THERE WITH THE SAME ISSUES AS ME OR WITH ADVICE, PLEASE HELP ME OUT, IT WOULD BE REALLY APPRECIATED.
CM for i9100 are only nightlies.
Nightly means that the firmware is every (not anymore) day/night getting updated, why? Because of bugs. Nightlys are oftne minor bug improvments compared to the one before.
There are no stable CM roms, except CM 9 so i've heard, just Nightlies.
Hope this clears it up.
PS. Maybe you can try other roms that have CM base..
I am using cyanogenmod 10.2 nightlies right now in my I9100G, and i don't have any problems, wouldn't go back to stock. Games work much better for me because this ROM is lightweight and uses ram better, i never used the desktop aid so i can't comment on that but maybe you should flash from recovery, there might be bugs with that aid, and which cyanogenmod are you using? If you are trying to use kitkat, there will be lots of bugs its only natural because it's been 2 weeks since kitkat went out, try 4.3.

Oh thanks for the repl. I didnt know that the firmwares were nightlies when using the official app. i thought the app description was that it flashes the latest stable cyanogen build. Just a question, being that ive flashed it twice to try and mitigate the issues to no avail, (ive wiped dalvik and cache and formatted) whats my next step? i really liked it but those issues are pretty disappointing/

I would try it the "old" way but im a little afraid. do you think that the fact that you are using the G variant would make a difference?
the only way to make youtube better was to loas previous version. and the games didnt necessarily have a constant lag, it seems more like a frame sync or clipping issue than a frame chugging/ lagging issue. The cyanogen build i was using was 10.2. so it was 4.3.1. thanks for your reply.

Might be a unique problem for you. You can try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532929
If it doesn't work, don't use cm and try other roms, as i said there might be a unique problem with your device.
I'm not going to make any recommendations because that's against XDA rules, but it stands to reason that the 10.2 builds won't be as 'polished' as the 10.1 builds purely because they haven't been under development for as long. If you don't like the bugs in 10.2, try something 'older'..........

Thanks for your replies guys,
im wondering if i should just wait for an official kitkat build.
but either way ill try your suggestions. looking forward to positive results.
just a heads up though i found another poster on a cyanogen forum that describes the same youtube problem. so maybe its not just me after all
There will be issues with the 10.2 builds for some time to come.....no disrespect to the developers, they've done /are doing a fantastic job to help keep the S2 alive. All custom ROMs go through this process and as they progress, the bugs become less and less.........
And as far as official KitKat.......not going to happen.....Samsung ended official support for the S2 with Jellybean....

Well overall the ROM is fantastic. I love the look and feel and added functionality. What I meant about waiting for official kitkat is an offcial rom from cyanogen based on kitkat. Im sure that support for s2 will continue so long as the hardware is capable.

Tired Of Trying Custom Roms

Hi everybody,
I have been trying roms for months. I donate some of them, I reported bugs, I really gave lotst of times for this work. I just wanted to have a rom that newer Android... I am really tired of trying... I realize that; this is wasting time. I could not find a rom that works perfect or without issue. People say, "Stable/great/perfect rom, you should try" but when we try, it have lots of problems.
Finally, Am I going to have a newer really stable Android, without problem or lag?
Addition:
Finally
I found this rom
Mokee http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2596176
It is just what was i looking for...
Addition 2:
After 1 week, Mokee get laggy specially while incoming call. Phone ringing but caller screen came 4-5 seconds later.
Changed rom to SlimKat Beta 2.3
I have been using SlimKat more than 3 weeks.
Just one problem: Can not install some apps like xda app (error about sd card)
No more problem.
I suggest SlimKat.
no proper drivers for custom kexec kernel means... never ... sad but true ... get nexus device as i will... shame for moto and their bootloader lock such good device wasted...
Listen you maybe just wasting time but u also need to see that a majority of the users are having a good stable for most things. Sometime you have issues that could be that you have you caused it. Just my opinion my xt912 is running fine on cm11

I can understand that you are annoyed by trying ROM that turn out to be everything else but stable.
I had that too but to be fair I must say that my Stock ROM wasn't 100% stable either.
The good thing about this is: it's all voluntarily, so everybody can choose the personal best solution
Try china stock, used almost half year without any issue, hdmi and 1080p is perfect.

You guys say everythin ok, but when i look your post in rom topics, I see that you reported problems too.
I mean, roms are good, maybe working faster thank stock, but device freezing, sd mount problem, hdmi, camera problems, apps crashing, gps problems, visual problems, and other problems we have lot.
For example, I tried
Mokee
CM11
Slimbean
Slimkat
Artmod
Gummy
Eclipse
Miui
Some unoffical roms,
And i can say that, i tried to flash all of them bmm and also safestrap times and times. But all of them have problem that does not available to use daily.
If you ask that; what hell are you looking for?
I just looking for a newer android version (than stock 4.1) that working without problem (I dont care camera, webtop, hdmi )
Well, Can you offer a rom 4.3 or 4.2 working perfect?

I have learned here @xda there is a work-a-round for most anything U may be having issues with. Of course with Kexec some things just are not possible, yet.. To sum it up, there is an app for everything (almost) the only work-a-round I have not been able to accomplish or find here would be HDMI as I have to switch back to stock if I would like to use my phone with my TV and or computer but I am definitely not complaining this is for sure. Everything else I use daily or on a regular basis is 100% stable...

I have been running stock on my Razr Maxx (XT912) for over a year but it got bloated and VERY slow so I wanted to ROM this phone finally (I had messed around with my prior Droid X phone alot ).
Unfortunately ROMs always failed when I tried them. Unable to open zip in safestrap (updated to 3.65). I couldn't find a good answer to this problem so factory reset and tried again....no go...still failing. Verified the downloads. They are good. Rage/ Slim ROMs, CM 10 and 11...nothing works. I finally try to reflash my phone with the utility, but I used the wrong/ old one...phone no longer boots....uh oh!
Found the proper utility (updated batarang one) and ran it and I am able to boot again....but I'm still stock.
Reinstall Safestrap 3.65 and retry ROMing this thing. CM 11 (12-27) takes. Flash gapps and kernal. All is well. Double wiped cache/ dalvic between each step.
Been 24 hours now and I have had a couple crashes. Had to reinstall, then uninstall and reinstall dolphin browser to get it to work.
Just tried a pic and it worked fine...Gallery from phone crashed but opened fine separately.
The only problem I have with it so far is that PDAnet does not work. So I'll have to swap over to stock for net access that way.
I still have to learn the in and outs of the experience (?) launcher, but it is working pretty well for something that is still experimental. This is my one and only phone...my daily driver ... so I can't do with a lot of bugs. But of course my expectations are tempered by the fact I know I am not using a fully released ROM. I can say that my phone is running better than before and I get to have the fun of learning the new ways to use the phone with the improvements/ changes of the latest android.
I have read quite a few posts of people being upset that the ROMS aren't perfect. Read the posts about your particular ROM. Be sure you can deal with the bugs they list (usually on the first page/ post) and if not, don't use it. Also do a clean install the first time. Also follow the directions and read before you leap.

I have to say, MIUI has been the most consistent in performance. Only problem is that I've got an XT912 and I had no data while I used it. I only used it for two weeks, but during those two weeks it performed beautifully.
I am having the same issues as the OP. After about a month of use the ROM starts freezing and rebooting from time to time and overall feeling VERY sluggish. A fresh install always fixes this. I'm currently running CM10 and it as worked well for the longest by far, but is now awful. Stock is also subpar after a month of use.

Regarding the 4.3 Upgrade

I recieved the OTA update for my i9300. I havent updated it yet because I am not certain if it will work flawlesly. I've been reading a lot of articles about the 4.3 update which have a lot of bugs but samsung promised to fix the issue yet I am not sure if it has been fixed for this update?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Well, I updated to 4.3 a few days ago and I did not encounter any major issues. In fact, there are only two issues that I have come across so far: there's a bit of lag when you unlock the phone (almost imperceptible). And I also encountered the "Samsung push service has stopped working" which I solved by uninstalling it from Google Play and then updated it. Everything else is working just fine.
Thanks Alex but regarding the lagg thou. It lags even if you're on full power not on power saving and also about the immense battery drain issue?
Sent from my GT-i9300 using xda-developers app
You should try another kernel like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517756
This works pretty good on my device! I had the same issues as you before.
Yes, it "lags" on full power (I never turn on that power saving option). The screen turns on after a second or so after I press the home button/power button, when you swipe over the screen it works smoothly. As about battery drain, I use it very frequently so I charge it every day anyway. But yes, it seems to drain the battery a little bit more than before. I can come up with a more detailed answer about this in a few days.

Hi, if you don not like to wait for the official OTA updates, you could try Omega ROM.
The developer-team is very quick to take the latest Samsung releases and turn them into their custom ROM (including many useful features).
If you stick to the latest Omega ROMs, you always will have the latest Samsung based ROM on your phone (including the latest Samsung bugfixes). On top of that, the support in the Omega community is excellent.

Been running custom roms for years and never had those sort of problems .

Maybe you need to read a bit more on the Android development forums and find out the difference between types of custom roms .
Been running custom roms for years and never had those sort of problems .
Plenty of info on the board regarding 4.3 OTA .

Well I always read and ask for other's opinion before doing something on my phone. I dont want to have any bad experience since that I spend most of my time with my beloved phone. Now when I read out bug reports on the custom firmwares that was offered those are the common issues it might be a case to case basis but I dont want to take chances.

There are a lot of awesome custom ROMs out there, like WanamLite and Neatrom. These guys stick to the stock as much as possible, I have never seen them port things from other devices. IMO, problems occur when you start porting apps and functions or launchers from other devices. However, the XXUGML2 or XXUGML4 updates from Samsung work flawlessly. I am running ML4 on my device with ML4 kernel and MK6 modem and it is awesome.
Yes ML4 is stable.

Hi, no offense taken. I just wanted to share my experience. OMEGA is close to the stock ROM and if there were any bugs, they mostly came from the Samsung stock ROM. The difference is the update frequency. While it takes ages to get an OTA for your specific region / provider, most custom ROM developers take the latest release published by Samsung regardless of region and provider. Meaning, you will always get the latest and greatest.
