need help here, have questions - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

guys I have a i9100 laying here and it's running GB stock rom now, and I've been wondering what sort of method is the best to get to the latest official ics rom? I saw the thread with official samsung roms which is flashable with odin but I've seen cases of stuck in flashing factoryfs.img in odin at the first few percents? and things like eMMC bug? Since the device isn't mine and the owner tried to upgrade using kies but never got it through due to slow download in kies.

Settings/about device/system update

I prefer u leaked jellybean for s2 if u need guide how to flash just follow this steps

Well firstly please do not use silly topic titles such as this. This is a questions forum, you have no need to put your topic title as "have questions" that's a given and doesnt give anybody browsing forum any info. Topic titles are supposed to be descriptive of topic and it baffles me why so many people find that concept hard. You will get more views and potential help by giving brief description of topic instead of generic crap.
And as already stated, use the inbuilt system update.

There is no need to worry about that crap. Its just n00bs who have other stuff running in background that interfere with flashing or they low battery etc.
Just install latest Kies to get drivers and flash via ODIN according to guides here, making sure not to use any .pit file or repartition etc.

Stock firmware problem

Before I continue I just want to say that I have looked around, used the search button, but haven't found anything that will solve my problem.
So I was fairly unpleased with the custom rom I had flashed on my Sgs2 and wanted to flash my stock firmware (2.3.3 XWKE2) and so I went into the official thread for firmwares.
At first I tried out a 2.3.4 stock firmware, but kies would'nt let me update so then I continued looking and found a stock firmware that matched the one my phone originally had (android version 2.3.3 XWKE7)
I checked the codes and downloaded the NEE one since I live in Sweden. Flashed it with no problems but then when I went on Kies to try and update again I got "Your unit doesn't support updates through Kies"
It then also said: I9100XWKE2/1910OXXKE2/I9100XXKDJ/I9100XWKE2 (KOR)
Why did it say KOR? I thought I had downloaded the Swedish/Nordic firmware?
Can someone help me flash the real original firmware for my phone so I can update through Kies?
And your posting this in the dev forum because...?
This sections is for people to post developments not questions, help topics etc. Thats whey we have a Q&A and General forums.
Take a couple of seconds to look at this forum/topics again and then ask yourself does my topic look remotely at home here
Well, KE2 clearly isn't KE7, so it's doubtful that you flashed your original firmware.
This is stock Nordic KE2, taken from this thread.
If all you want is stock firmware, install this then connect to Kies and it should update to the latest Nordic firmware. Then back it up!! I'm in Norway, can't remember what is the most recent version, been on custom ROMs for a long, long time... Lykke til.
What custom ROM did you try, and why didn't you like it?

But my phone originally had the KE2 on it when I bought it. Couldn't wait for the Swedish release for KE7 and began flashing custom firmwares.
That is the exact link that I downloaded, from that exact forum. That's why I find it weird that Kies doesn't recognize it.
The custom ROM I tried was a leaked version of 2.3.5 from Frankenstein. I was about to download and flash another ROM but every time I asked for someone's suggestion they would always say the taste differs from person to person. I then responded that I just want a high performance and quick ROM, and never got an answer so that is why I wanted to flash to an original Firmware from Kies.
You ask 10 people which rom they consider good and you will get 10 answers, some of the most popular being:
Hyperdroid (personal fav): great base, great kernel, OTA app for mods/updates
Villanrom: Older base, very stable, some limitation of available mods due to the older base
Checkrom: Never been my cup of tea but people seem to like it, it has the kitchen app for mods
That is the exact link that I downloaded, from that exact forum. That's why I find it weird that Kies doesn't recognize it.
Flashing firmware means somewhere you changed codes and KIES dies not recognize .
A removal of KIES plus all registry entries may solve the issue .

Do you mean uninstalling it completely and re-installing it?
I'll try that and see if it works.
You need to have a "stock" combo of stock firmware, aka a modem, "PDA" (kernel+rom) and csc that where shipped together, otherwise KIES wont recognise it.
I tried uninstalling and re-installing it but it didn't work. Still get the "Your unit doesn't support programupdating through Kies" message.

Where can I find all that?
When I look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
All I can see is the one I used and that's just a PDA file
You require your saved original rom or one that nearly matches it .
From the branded /providers roms post .
Carrier branded .

Was it a file with one big .tar in it? if so thats everything.
Why do you want to update with KIES? Just use odin to flash a KIES release, there all in that thread, and its counterpart with the carrier branded firmwares.
Note, kies wont be able to updates "frankenstein" releases which are mix/match.

Yes it was a big .tar file!
I really don't know how to explain it. I love this phone, and want to get the most out of it (custom roms, overclock, root) but I'm not that good with all of these different concepts and there is always that fear of bricking the phone.
Also I go to college right now, and am a bit behind so I really don't have time to go through the xda forums on a daily/weekly basis, so I thought that when the new firmwares (mainly a official/perfected version of the ICS) updates are available I could just log on to Kies and update them while saving my self some time.

KIES is pretty crap and does this all the time, I have never had an update though KIES so im out of ideas
The one big tar file should have been right though, unless you picked a mix/match one.

Nope, did not pick a mix/matched one from what I know. I'm gonna try one of the firmwares from the previous link you sent me. If it doesn't work there then I'll just continue flashing through Odin.
Quick question though, it says:
XWKI8:
Firmware info: PDA:XWKI8| PHONE:NEKI2| CSC:HTSKI1

What do I do with the stock kernel? Flash it? If so where? (for example csc?)

[Q] custom roms for SGS2

hey have any of you guys installed a custom roms on the SGS2 i have the phone rooted and i was contimplating installing a custom rom just wanted you guys information on how safe it is to do so. I was acutally looking for a nice ICS custom rom but apparently i would need one for my kernel(XWKL1). What would happen if i install a custom rom of ICS ment for a different kernel would it brick my phone?
thanks in advance for any information.

probably but you are better off reading and learning before bricking your phone

Yes it is safe if you know what you're doing and for you that means don't go anywhere near an ICS ROM try a Gingerbread ROM first but before you do that read and read and search and search.

wow thanks for such a quick reply so for example if i were to install the Omega rom i would need to get one for my kernel version only right? Then if would need to revert all i need to do is flash my old insecure kernel back and i would be back.
edit: - i didnt see B3311 post. ok i am a lil confused now if i were to install a custom rom ment for a differnt kernel would it work or would i brick my phone?
Kernel version doesen't matter.

And the key to all the reading is that you are less likely to brick your phone more likely to be able to recover from problems.

True but even with all the reading at least you will feel more comfortable about going about and rooting the phone and flashing a rom. That way at least you do not have to expect others to spoonfeed the information to you. Also when you flash a rom for the first time you will feel great about yourself cause you did it all by yourself than asking others to help you. Hope that makes sense.. and to what you said also you have a great point and i always read your posts when you help people JJe as you are one helpful guy.
Hey, I just contacted Google and advised them to remove the Google search widget that comes standard on every android phone's home screen.
It useless I told them, nobody seems to even notice or use it. Heck, why search when you can just ask?
Still waiting for there reply.

to be clear i never asked which rom was the best and which one to use. I have been reading up on all the different roms available i have narrowed it down to the ICS and the Omega rom and i know how to flash the roms the instructions there are quite clear my only query was about the kernel version for which i could not find a solution. Now i have another question since you guys are saying the kernel version does not matter then why are they country specific and suppose i use a kernel ment for USA would that mean when ics finally got released here for the sgs2 i would need to reflash my phone with the gingerbread 2.3.6 version before i could get the official ICS update from kies?

let me make this clear. Different variants of the s2 hence why you see different forums. If you have an international version then you are safe to flash whatever you want in this forum here. So if you see USA version I would steer clear it as it has nothing to do with the international version if that makes sense. Regarding your other question well yes flash BBL to stock official ROM and that is it

The kernal is not related to country or carrier. The csc is.
Practically all custom roms come with working kernals and modems for the rom.
As for getting the official upgrade, you can reflash your original firmware, but most here just download the new official firmwares from the Intratech thread or sites like sammobile and flash it with Odin. No need for kies. I don't use it at all except for when I first got the S1 in 2010.

Need MOAR reading!!!
Do not upgrade via kies. It will give you at&t's version of ics which contains the emmc bug that places your phone at risk of being bricked if you need to do a factory reset/wipe. Since you are already rooted you can just go straight to any of the great ics roms on the development forum.
In terms of how to get there, i agree with the previous poster, you have lots of reading to do. Start with the stickies in the forum. In particular, this thread by creepyncrawly is a great place to start reading:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
Don't flash until you have read thoroughly and really understand what you are about to do.

[Q] What are consequences of using wrong CSC & more?

Hey,
Please forgive me if this and following questions have been answered already. I'm casual reader of XDA Forums. Before posting this thread I've done a lot of searching and reading (it took me past 2 hours) and still I'm unsure as to the answer.
I hope it's perfectly fine to have more questions in the thread than one.
All I could find about my current phone and rom running on it:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/18067902/Screenshot_2013-01-28-13-05-57.png
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/18067902/Screenshot_2013-01-28-13-10-43.png
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/18067902/Screenshot_2013-01-28-13-13-56.png
So to the point. I'm curious if there are any consequences of flashing ROM and not using the correct CSC,
I wanted to flash latest JB on my phone - the official stock ROM from Spain. I'm afraid of doing it because I'm not sure what will happen.
Will my phone be debranded?
Some background info: I bought the phone in Poland. Flashed stock ICS ROM with multiCSC and chose XEO as you can see in the screenshot above. Now I'm living in Denmark. I'd like to get the latest JB on my phone, debranded. What should I do?
Another small question - where can I get the latest version of Odin? I've been looking for some official site for it but to no avail. It seems that I'm too stupid for that.
Thanks in advance for your time and hopefully an answer to my questions (also if any further arise).
NB Sorry for using wrong terms throughout the post - I'm kinda newbie to all of these.

After running the "Got brickbug?" app it appears that mine phone is affected by it. Should I wait for the official OTA then?
Also there are still few questions unanswered from the OP. I'd like to know that stuff.
Brickbug is a hardware problem but only matters if you have a kernel that is not patched for it. Just don't wipe or format the phone till you are sure you have a kernel that is safe.

Brick bug was a start, I assume you've done more reading about all those answers you were looking for.
CSC will work for every I9100, you were reffering to MODEM.
Go ahead and flash jb from spain, if your network doesn't work (unlikely but possible) you'll have to flash another modem.
And yes, your device will be fully unbranded.

no, there isnt, sorry. If you wait a while they may release a 4.2 (or maybe 4.3) touchwiz rom, but for now you have 2 options, use that rom, or use a custom rom.
There is really nothing to worry about with flashing roms, just make sure you make a nandroid backup beforehand, the only way to truly brick your phone is to be extremely stupid and flash a rom or kernel meant for a different device.
If you need to bring your phone in, just restore the nandroid backup and reset the flash counter.
Hmm, that's some weird advise you've given there.
Anyway, 4.3 official Samsung rom has been out for a few days now -head over to general forum to read the stickies on how to use odin and the official firmware thread to download the file.
You can hard brick your phone simply by ticking the wrong box in odin, so be very careful and follow the instructions exactly.

really, samsung kies doesnt have it, well at least where i live.
well that is true that you can tick the wrong box and brick, but, like flashing the wrong file, you'd have to be stupid when all the tutorials say that it bricks your device.
Simply .4.3 is rolling out officially at some stage you will get the update via Kies or OTA .
At XDA we have a couple of 4.3 firmwares that can be flashed .
But that would require you to read the faqs and guides first .
Plus the updates really have to many problems to bother with wait for later versions .

Neat rom lite 4.3 is working very well for what I need, no bugs at all (apart from the wake delay, but it's always done that to some extent).
I agree with JJEgan 4.3 update is rolling out but it is.... well how can I put this nicely the "update is not what we expected" because you don't want to root and flash custom roms I suggest you wait and read up about the new "update" if that's what it isBut at the end of the day it is your device and if you do go down the custom rom route read read read!
I have the I9300XXEMG4. So can I use this guide to get to 4.3 ? BTW the guy at 9:32 the guy says that by flashing the firmware his counter didn't go up is that true ?

4.3 is due to roll out for the international s3 anytime now depending on your carrier, I wouldn't go through the trouble of flashing firmware if you dont know what you're doing , I am due 4.3 in a couple weeks according to three
