brick- can write a kernel, but not ROM - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i tried going back to my original provider rom and got bricked.
i don't understand why ?
both are ICS ...
anyway i think i got now soft brick(?) i dont have access to CWM but i can go to DOWNLOAD MODE
and cant write to NAND .
i used odin to burn a kernel , but that is as far as it goes, i cant burn the ROM.
but vie odin i can write i think any kernel in PDA.
help me save my S2

If you can write kernel just flash Siyah and once done reboot into recovery and flash rom via zip file.
Simple.

i got the ROM and KERNEL and all from the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458 i dont know what rom/modem/kernel are there..
one more thing ? -who is responsible for that guide ? the KERNEL file in the link for ICS is corrupt.

thank you but how to get into CWM i know ...
i dont know how to make my S2 go there

there is progress!!
i tried doing the same thing i already did, expecting the same result..
but somehow the phone manged going into "android system recovery (3e)"
it looks like CWM menu but i cant install any of the ROMs i have on SDcard or siyah kernels i have there to.
i can do cache and system wipe, but what good would that be for me ?
it doesn't have any access to backup or restore options.. so i cant restore the back up i have.

That's what I was tryin' to say, you gotta keep on flashing.
here, flash this rom (Code, CSC & Modem via Odin).
here's the placing order:

all i can flash is kernel
when i flash kernel all OK !
but when i tried what you said ODIN failed after attempting to write to "NAND"

I think you have a corrupted nand... first try to flash a good pit file (remember to tick re-partition), and start by flashing a stock rom to the handset, does that not help, then you have a hardware failure

Did you use Rom Manager to boot to recovery? I don't know if it's the same on i9100 but the i777 has issues with Rom Manger, with the recovery part of the kernel. I know CM comes with, I haven't researched it but maybe something to look into...... It kinda sounds like you formatted the ROM. GL

Yes i used Rom manager to boot into recovery...
can u suggest any possible fix for this??
Flash siyah kernel via odin and that should give you a fresh copy of clock work recovery if its corrupt?
Rom manager is nothing but trouble. It done the same thing to my x10i and my sg2.
It took several hours to get them back to running cwm(so I could restore my nand backups).
I think I used doom lords easy rooting kit for one and Odin for the other.
I've done a lot of stuff on several phones and I can state that after using RM it left the phones as close to full brick as you can get........lol

Yup, there's your problem. Rom Manager flashes incompatible kernel.
Simply boot into download mode and flash Siyah kernel and you will be back up and running.
Sorry mate it dint work... I flashed siyah kernel and now the phone doesnt proceed further from Siyah kernel logo...
can any one provide me way to flash a rom using odin...
i can use CWM... not even with the hard key combination...
only way left is i guess Odin..
Odin cannot flash .zip formats and all the rom downlodables are in .ZIP format...
is there a way out?

All I can do is download a rom which is in zip format, but i know odin does not support .zip but it supports .tar, so how can i download rom in .tar, also does it matter if I flashed the rom which is not meant for my region?(I mean I dont know my phone's PDA and I am not able to decide which firmware to download since every firmware has its own specific PDA)... Yes, I'll be going back again to custom rom after I make it work...haha
AFAIK a rom for another country wont break your phone, but be careful with 4.0.4 roms because of the brickbug

Boot into download mode and flash the single .tar file through odin, flashing instructions can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
PD: if the downloaded file is .zip and not .tar, just extract the zip and u'll get the .tar

Parameter is incorrect error can be caused by either of two reasons
1 . something is wrong with the file you downloaded try re downloading
2.Kies is interfering with Odin, terminate Kies from the background by using the task manager.

Thanks, but just to make sure I understand this right (I have the same problem) .. this will put the stock ROM on my phone, then I will have to root again, and then use CWM to put a custom ROM?
Is there a rooted ROM that can be flashed using Odin? I'm not too pick on JB or not, it will be replaced anyway.
Thanks again.

No need to flash stock rom.
Just flash Siyah kernel (.tar) via ODIN (This will give you custom recovery) then wipe data and flash custom rom of your choice. It will come pre-rooted and with its own custom kernel which you can then replace with Siyah again or other kernel of your choice.

when u have problem like this the best way is to flash a 'Stock ICS v4.0.3' firmware on ur phone using 'ODIN' to have a clean flash and booting of ur phone
then u can simply flash the tar version of 'Siyah kernel v4.1.5/5.0.1' again from 'Odin' in dwnld mode to automatically root ur phone and install latest CWM recovery, which can be used to install the custom rom of ur choice

And that is exactly what has been advised. What's your point?
The user only has access to download mode so is assuming he has to use download to flash rom. It sounds like he isnt aware that he can easily restore his recovery via flashing a kernel. It also sounds like the user wants to use a custom rom otherwise he would already know that he can flash stock via download.
This is why its been advised to flash kernel via download instead of rom. That way once he has his recovery back he can simply reboot into cwm and carry on where/how he wishes like for example flashing his normal/preferred rom via zip like usual.
Read this thread again and see if he can actually perform a kernel flash just to get to cmw so he can go flash a stock rom.
Here's the answer: yes he could.
now...wouldn't it be better if he flashes a stock rom, take a long breath as he realizes he's not bricked (read the topic) and then flas a stock rom when he's sure about giving it another try?
read beyond the words kid, beyond the words
TheATHEiST said:
No.
He has no reason to flash a stock rom unless he specifically wants a stock rom. If he does then yes he can simply flash stock rom as normal but its my guess that he wants a custom rom since he was asking how he can flash a ZIP.
If that is the case then flashing a stock rom (.tar) would be a complete waste of time and it would be much quicker to simply flash kernel like Siyah and reboot into recovery and then even restore a backup if he has one or just flash a rom zip from card.
Oh and stop trying to sound patronizing, I'm 30 years old and no "kid".
@ OP
If you want a stock rom then read one of teh many topics we already have on stock roms/how to flash them.
If you want to use custom ones via cwm then simply flash Siyah kernal and then reboot into recovery and then do as your normally would.

[Q] How can I backup/restore ENTIRE phone?

Hello.
I'd like to give MIUI a try, but, of course, I'd also like to switch back to my stock ROM if things go wrong or if I don't like MIUI.
How can I backup my entire phone (rooting, Recovery Mode capability and other on-power key-combination-activated features etc etc) and 100% failsafe restore it at any time?
Thanks in advance.
Rooted stock = do a nandroid (CWM) backup which is essentially an 'image' of the phone at the time you make the backup. Try MIUI; don't like it ? Restore the nandroid you took of your rooted stock setup. Sorted (You will need to ensure you backup the contents of your external SD card separately if you have one).
Be careful you don't 'overthink' this, it's really very simple both ways (backup/restore).
My Recovery Mode doesn't have a backup option

Thanks for prompt response. I took a look at current Recovery Mode menu and it doesn't include a backup/restore option like in http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/ClockworkMod_Recovery. It shows only the above:
Code:

Volume up/down to move highlight;
power button to select.
reboot system now
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache

Sorry if it has already been detailed in another thread, but I didn't find it and I don't know how to make such nandroid backup.
Thanks.
OBackup
I've just downloaded OBackup app from Play store and am doing my backup.
My question is: after I flash MIUI, what are the tools/steps I'll need to restore my backup?
Thank you very much.
That's the stock Android recovery.
OK...
What you need to do is not install CWM separately. That will only persist until you reboot & is designed to allow you to flash whatever rom/kernel you want which will have it's own version of CWM baked into the kernel.
That backup program you're using; no idea as I've never used it.
What I recommend you do is find a custom kernel you like (actually, any custom kernel will do given you're going to flash Miui) which will have CWM. Flash that into your stock setup, then make a nandroid (CWM) backup of your stock setup so you can go back to it if you don't like Miui/whatever else you try (If you restored this & wanted to go back completely stock/unrooted/etc, all you'd need to do is flash a stock kernel). This is what you asked for in your OP. I warned you not to start overcomplicating things, and this is exactly what you're doing.
The kernel supplied with Miui should have CWM, so if you find you don't like it, you should be able to simply restore the backup you made of your stock setup in CWRecovery.
I also very strongly recommend you learn 'the basics' as you seem to be lacking in this knowledge. Flashing stuff/etc without knowing these things leads to busted phones. Read the tutorials/guides stickied near the top of the General section; there's a wealth of information in those.

Hi and tnx for reply!
I've try to do a restore of my sock rom from recovery but it's says to me that there is an error on md5 check sum...
I've install the RootBox ROM in my gt-i9100...but I can't come back to sock from recovery because the stock kernel dosen't work with RootBox's Kernel...
so I've to use odin to flash the stock firmware.......at the origin, my idea didn't comprised use odin because of download mode counter (so that why I did a backup!)...but now I don't have any other way...!
...what a sad story.. XD

so I've to use odin to flash the stock firmware.......at the origin, my idea didn't comprised use odin because of download mode counter (so that why I did a backup!)...but now I don't have any other way...!
...what a sad story.. XD

You can't restore your backup because of a different MD5 SUM which means that your backup has been corrupted.
Flashing a stock ROM or Kernel via ODIN will not increase your flash counter.
Flash NeatROM Lite, this is the best ROM ever, it like stock with additional things.

You can't flash a stock ROM from recovery by changing .tar.md5 to .zip .
You want to change ROM to Stock, use Mobile Odin to flash a Stock ROM or Flash NeatROM v4.8 Lite.

softbricked

Hi. I think i soft bricked my phone because its stuck at the logo but i can go to recovery and download mode. i even flashed ms1 stock rom with odin but without the .pit file and no changes. where can i get the pit file and is it the only way?
EDIT:in the stock recovery there is an error saying read only file system
1- You can search "softbrick" and read other users' experiences.
2- If you are looking for your stock firmware, you can search samfirmware.com or your variants development forums.
3- If you can use recovery you can nuke your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532929
Good luck and get back if you have troubles.

No, using PIT file is not advisable as it brings more trouble to u
So since its a Boot loop issue for now, Just flash a Custom Kernel like 'Philz' from ODIN and then use its recovery to do a full wipe and then reboot ur phone and check
Search for 'Philz' kernel thread and once there read the first post carefully and act
