[Q] Unrooted and Stuck at HTC screen/reset - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok. Hey All. First post. I will try to include everything. First: I am a noob.
My problem is that I power on, see the HTC white screen, then, reset. OVER and OVER.
(Background) I had root via Revolutionary. no troubles. was running JellyBlur. Pretty sure I had the correct radios. Were some issues here and there. Probably bad flash/not wiping/etc. (data connectivity/ringer issues) Who knows. Either way..... had 4EXT as recovery. That was past. Not sure if anymore info would be needed as this is not the trouble.
I unrooted via a guide i found on here. Did it just fine, as far as I could tell. The two h_boot/ no h_boot files. I got back to stock. S-on. Phone was fine.
Maybe a week or two later, BOOM, i looked at it and it was in the process of one of it's famous resets. I didnt think much of it. But it never came back on. Just kept looping to the HTC screen and turning back on. Over and over, like i said. It had been fine. I did nothing tech wise to bring this about.
I have tired taking out sd card. NOPE. Formatted SD card. NOPE. Searched for and tried to load through hboot pg05img files...not sure if they were the same ruu or different ones.....NOPE. (files were named correctly.) it finds the files. unpacks them. asks to update. YES. reboots....back to loop.
my screen shows....
.LOCKED mecha xd ship s-on h_boot - 1.05.0000 microcrop-1 radio - 1.49.00.04.06w_1 emmc-boot jul 19, 2011 14:51:08
as i said, i do not have root or recovery bc i had unrooted sucessfully. cant do adb(not sure what all that is but i can follow instructions well) bc i cant get anything other that hboot screen. i have tried to do the update/unzip ruu numerous times, downloaded from different threads/sources. NOPE.
when it finds the pg05img file, well right before, it does say some image or file is missing. something very similar but a bit different. if you know what that is cool. i can recreate if needed. i will do whatever it takes to win this. i hate losing. already got another bolt but i want this one back.
being a noob, i am not sure what i am leaving out here. i read somewhere that some image may be missing. my logic tells me there is SOMETHING i can put on that SD card to get the phone to load something. im stuck. any help would be most most appreciated.

Maybe try an .exe via computer.

hey. thanks for the reply. that is one of the things i have seen mentioned. it is also one of the things that i dont know what it means. i get a .exe is an executable program.....i am not sure how that relates to phone, where to find it/or how to make it work if it is just a command, and what to do once i clarify the preceding questions. :/ any more explanation would be most helpful. thanks so much.

Head over to the shipped rom thread in the development forum. There is a list of ruu. Download the best one for you and and install it via your computer.

An issue I've come across.

Maybe I'm just terrible at searching, but I've looked on this site, Google, and some other Android site, but haven't found an answer that works. Basically I regret rooting my phone... but that isn't the whole issue...
So I rooted yesterday. I have an HTC Evo 3d GSM HBOOT 1.49.0008 (berfore my root). I got ROM Manager and made a backup of my rom giving it a custom name. From here I went and downloaded High ROM 3D v1.1.
I decided I didn't like that rom so I tryed to restore my backup rom... md5 mismatch... or some crap like that. I tried this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976453
I kept getting "invalid command" or some crap like that...
All I want right now is to somehow go back to my factory settings un-rooted... Is this possible, or am I screwed?
Hopefully I'm not making a duplicate thread... If I am I'm sorry, I honestly did search for a good couple hours.
Thanks for any help!
if yu are trying to get back to stock download an ruu file if its the "exe file then make sure to relock phone first or it wont work"; and if its the flashable zip just super wipe and install via recoveryhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334473

Search isn't everyone's friend, its not mine. You need to run an ruu.exe, I don't know where to find a gsm one, I'm cdma. But I've gone back to stock a few times, just relock the device and run the ruu from unlit and you should be good.
@jwolf1: That says CDMA. MY Evo 3d is GSM.
@xcpefrmreality: I'm still really new to all this. What is an ruu.exe? What is unlit? I'll see if I can find out anything in the mean time!
Thanks for the help you guys!
Sorry About that here's the right linkhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208485
I am assuming this would be the one I'm looking for?
RUU_Shooter_U_Rogers_WWE_1.20.631.2_Radio_10.53.9020.00_10.13.9020.0
It was the only one listed with Rogers (my provider). How exactly do I use this file? Do I put it onto my SD card and install it with ROM manager?
(I'm still waiting to download it. All the free download slots are full.)
Just download an then go to recovery once phone is powered down: volume down+powerbutton then navagite an find the file & install

If that ruu is a .exe file then you need to go to hboot, relock, run ruu.exe from the computer while still in hboot. If its a .zip then you'll have to extract the images and flash them one at a time from fastboot.
Okay! Sweet! Once I can actually download the file I'll do that!
Once I finish installing the file will I still be rooted?
Will it be safe to do a factory reset at that time?
I just wanna start from a clean slate.
Somewhat of an off topic question... but... Is it safe to delete EVERYTHING off my SD card? Because I know that there is alot of junk that has been left over from random apps haha!

No you won't be rooted after an ruu.
Yes, its safe to factory reset, but the ruu will do that for you.
Yes, its safe to wipe the sd, just do it before you run the ruu.
are you downloading the file phone or a desktop
Alright! Why do I need to wipe the SD before I run the RUU?

You could do it after the ruu but it'll erase android secure folder and a couple of others that the ruu puts on there. It'll just have to rebuild those folders when you reboot.
It really just depend which is mos convient

It was doing that to me the other night, I tried the download from my phone and it worked.
I managed to get a slot!
The file I'm downloading is an .exe.
Will I need to have USB debugging enabled, and fastboot disabled to do this? I'll also need to have disk mode enabled correct?
I read something about a PG86IMG.zip file. Will I need that too?

I believe you need USB debugging to do adb commands. Turn it on just in case. You're getting the .exe so just hold volume down and power with the phone off, select fastboot, plug in USB to phone and comp, type fastboot OEM lock, it should reboot you back to hboot and it'll say relocked with a security warning under the word relocked, don't reboot. Now just start the ruu.exe in windows and follow the prompts. That's it.
Edit.... Just re read the op and noticed your hboot version. I guess you used revolutionary and not htcdev. I'm not sure about how to s-on, so the fastboot OEM lock probably won't work. Maybe someone that knows about that will chime in.

[POLL] How many hboot 1.5ers have done Juopunutbear S-OFF?

Well the title speaks for itself, this is my first thread on these forums, hope its in the rights section.
So, like the title asks...
How many people on hboot 1.5 have sucessfully done the Juopunutbear S-OFF mod? If you have is it worth it and do you think its really hard to do?
I only ask because the directions seem short, simple, and to the point.
Am I okay starting out with MeanROMICS 1.4?
How do I know what file download is appropriate for me (the thread in this section states .05 is good but the instructions on juopunutbears site say .01)?
And lastly on the unlimited.io page under the hboot downloads section, do i need any of these files and how do i distinguish the difference?
me
i did. heeeelllllaaaaaaa easy. even better is i recovered fully from VM firmware. now im rocking hboot eng 1.4.200. only thing with jupwhateverabear is the instructions dont prepare you for it asking if you want custom jphboot. i said no. ended up saying soff locked 1.5, then i used the jphboot and it said jupowhateverabear but didnt say whether it was locked or unlocked or relocked. now with hbooteng the line where all that crap would be isnt even there.

great but why would i want the VM firmware? isnt the whole point of the juopunutbear thing to keep hboot 1.5 but with s-off?
I did it and it works. I extracted the files needed for the process, put it on my desktop, and followed the directions. I also watched a YouTube video on how they did the same steps on a HTC Amaze, so it was simple. I used a coaxial cable to do the process, shaped it as a "U" shape, then performed the steps. Did not brick my phone and only did it in one try.
right so what do i do with the extracted files besides the .exe?
theres the .img, .zip, and two .txt
typically you use the .img with fastboot and the .zip in recovery for a flash install but i dont see those steps in the instructions at all.

The way I did was to create a folder on the desktop. Then put all of the files inside the folder. I opened the exe and made sure my phone was on fastboot usb. Then wait until it tells you to do the wire trick. The wire trick is all about timing. If it fails the first time, just run the program again. That's how I did it.
so you did nothing with the other four files? ran the exe and it took care of the rest?

Yes. I also used a spare SD card I had laying around that got corrupted but I did not want to use my 16 GB card, so I swapped SD cards. You can later format it if you like. Just follow the instructions on the website and you should be fine.
i could just backup my SD card and use the one i have? or will it ruin it? or could i just use NO SD card?

You can also backup your SD card so you won't lose anything important. I was skeptic at first, but I was getting tired of flashing roms through fastboot. So I saw the opportunity and went for it. Honestly, I recommend using a spare SD card (does not matter the size) because it will create a backup in the SD card.
I did it with SOS Rom. Issues afterwards, can't download anything over 1g to my sd card through USB and can't load custom kernels or kernels found in roms though fastboot or other recoveries or flash image GUI. I am s off now. Could be because I used a non gb Rom or stock one. I take the blame, just learn from my stupidity. Going to try to unroot and try again tomorrow

That's weird. I was on SOS rom before I did the steps. Once I was done, I flashed the SOS rom again with no issues. The only difference I've made was to use fastboot to get to the revolutionary recovery to reflash the SOS rom again.
I did it, process was simple, I chose to install the optional hboot

Super small chance it won't get cleaned out, but totally use another card. Pretty sure you need to have a card in there. I don't dare take chances anymore LOL

Not the right section to put this.
I successfully got S-OFF from a stock rom after a couple tries i admit. And yes, the instructions are a bot short. I even searched for this "instructional video" that it mentions. The only video was for the Amaze, i believe. But, still the same method of execution. And first, you must make a backup of your SD Card if you want anything on it. Just backup the whole thing. I did notice that the Juopunutbear method did something to me SD card, it was salvageable after a format tho.
Gotta mention, the first time I tried this (unsuccessfully), when I booted up because I had given up, I noticed that I got caught in a boot loop. Every time ending up at the juopunutbear screen. Then I got scared, only to madly search how to get OUT of a boot loop, of which I thought I bricked it. And let me tell you it is possible to get out of it. I'll try and get the site I found up.
After I finally got back to stock I successfully tried the Juopunutbear method, along with the wire-trick and finally got it up. I tried to mimic the video to get the right number of taps and length of time that you need to make contact with the ground. It finally worked and it's freakin awesome. Been waiting a long time for someone to find out this hboot 1.5 problem.
This is not the proper place to put this better to put this in the already started thread for Juopunutbear or possibly even General or something. There is no development being made in this thread.
Overall I find the wire trick less invasive and less of a hassle then the whole downgrade, brick, update, process. No offence to the guys that designed the process. Because I'm sure it took more than their brains to do but personally, I like the combination of hardware / software hacking.
+1 for the wire trick S-OFF trick

Can't quite get it....
Everyone else seems to do this with no problems, but this is my first root. Well im following this particular guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813818 and have done everything up to completing the wire trick. When I run ControlBear.exe the phone boots up then the cmd window says "second backup failed immediately" and no options ever pop up on the screen on my phone. Can anyone propose a solution? Since this is my first time rooting, it could be a stupid noob mistake but for the life of me its killing me to be so close yet so far to soff.

[Q] Unrooted, unlocked S-on but can't get custom ROM

So, I have gone through the whole process of rooting my phone, unlocking it. I have TWRP on it, Titanium backup (thankfully), Goo Manager. It is S-on. I have 2.09 Hboot. My TWRP-jewel is 2.5.0.0. Ok, now onto my question, I am trying to get CM-10 to load but it doesn't go any further than the load screen. No matter what I try. I have even tried switching to JellyBAM but all to no avail. Can someone offer me tips as to what I may have done or be doing wrong? Thanks in advance
[Q] trying to put CM10 on my rooted phone
Forgive me if I put this in the wrong group, but I feel this is probably the right one for it. I have Hboot 2.09. I have TWRP. I have S-on. I want to put CM10 with Gapps onto my phone but every way I have tried, CM10 just sits there and loops around, the longest being an hour. I figured some time was possible, but come on. Over on Google+, people are telling me to flash this and flash that, fastboot this or that. I have no idea what they are trying to say to me. I am loving learning all of this but I need a little more explanation than just flash something. I realize that flash has something to do with commands. I am running windows 8 if that helps on my laptop. My TWRP version is 2.5.0.0. I don't know if my phone has gone through the latest update or not. Thanks for any help you can give me!
You have to install the kernel separately from the ROM since you're S-on. Click the link in my sig for more info.
You most likely have the newest touch panel driver, so you can only use ROM's based off the latest OTA, software version 3.16. Your touchscreen won't work otherwise. You can gain S-off and downgrade your touch panel driver, at which point you can run AOSP ROM's like CM.

First of all you might be on the newest touch panel driver, and that's the first thing that gets you in trouble because aosp roms don't work with that, as of now, it might work later... Who knows... Secondly you need to flash the boot.img separately thru fastboot because your are s-on and on 2.09... To make your life easier try to get s-off either thru facepalm or dirty racun... That way you can flash any rom and also downgrade your touch panel driver to get aosp working on your phone... If you flash viper rom it has a senseless option so you can use nova and get stability and some sort of aosp look... Good luck!

Yes, S-off is the way to go if you want to run CM. Otherwise, try meanbean or viper or sharkie or any other sense based Rom. They should work fine.

ADB commands must be issued when the phone is mounted as media share not as fastboot. Connect your phone as if you were transferring files between it and your pc.
Something new to try since you're on the latest OTA.

I do have it connected to the computer like that. Do you mean I have to go into TWRP and mount it that way? I tried it that way too. I downloaded and whole new android SDK to see if that is the problem. If not, I am going to factory reset my phone and start over. I can't imagine why I was able to root the phone, get it unlocked, but now I can't do anything else with it. Not even get adb commands to recognize it.

This is for tabidee hey I was reading ur stuff on xda developers and I have a question. If u can help if not its cool. Ok so i got my sprint evo and I went to try to root it. I went thru a process that with the steps combined with htcdev site got me to say unlock my bootloader. I used hoot 2.09 and I was supposed to flash this pimg175 zip to i guess install a recovery. Well that won't work at all... I cant get my s on switched to s off and so i am stuck with according to the hoot screen a tampered, unlocked with s on, unrooted phone. I am so confused with all the steps and files I had to download, rename and save to various folders that I gave up. With my phone at its current state what do I do next? I deleted all the files from the day I unlocked it but if you can explain to me... And explain like if I was a five year old cuz I'm that dumbfounded on this subject... But if u can maybe walk me thru the rest of the process or walk me thru a undoing of what I done so far. I'm lisa. My email is [email protected]
Check out the link below. It's a GUI for rooting and has everything you need to get your phone rooted. You'll need to install the recovery first then superuser, which will give you root.

[Q] Trouble rooting...LOTS of trouble.

Okay so I have been trying to root and I have tried everything I can find.
I have a fully upgraded phone so Revolutionary won't work for me out of the box and so I am trying to HTCDev unlock.
The problem though, is that I can't get Windows 8.1 to recognize my device. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers multiple times trying to get it to work. ADB works fine and can see the Thunderbolt but fastboot will not.
Nothing I have found has changed anything.
I also have a laptop with Ubuntu, would that work better?
You need to do it from a Windows 7 or lower computer. In order for the bolt to be seen in fastboot on Windows 8 it would require an update to the fastboot drivers on the phone which is very very unlikely.

Yes it should. Although, to unlock, s off and root ics on the bolt revolutionary isn't going to work straight up. You will have to downgrade the hboot version in order to be fully unlocked.

The tutorial I am following is leading me through unlocking with HTCdev, and installing SuperUser, would I still have to downgrade and use Revolutionary?
Sorry, complete newb.

Before you continue with the tutorials can you verify what android version you have for me?

Android version 4.0.4
HTC Sense 3.6
hboot 1.08
If any of that helps.

That is exactly what I needed to know. You need to go to infectedrom.com and use the guide that is there to unlock and s off. The problem with what you posted earlier is that even if you unlock with HTCdev your hboot is going to prevent revolutionary from working. You have to downgrade your hboot in order to use Revolutionary.

Can you give me a direct link? Because the one I was using last night from InfectedROM was just walking me through the htcdev unlock.
Edit: I found it...seems it has me load different things from the other one I was following.
It's the Lt. Belspur post. But I finally got fastboot to work! So it's looking promising. Thank you very much.

I see where you're stuck now. You can do it in Ubuntu but you may get stuck at some point. I would definitely recommend doing it using Windows 7.

Wrong forum. You should ask in the Kindle fire forums because I haven't owned one or even handled one in person for that matter. It might would help if you were on newer than xp. Vista at least. Idk though

Edit: I missed your other post, but that is exactly the tutorial I've been following. I'm near the end...see the following problem. :/
Okay, so I'm almost to the end...I'm to the point of putting the .19 ROM on my sd card and loading it into hboot.
What happens is that it recognizes it, loads it, checks it, and then goes back to hboot.
The suggestions from the post I am following say to try reformatting the SD card, or a different image. I have done both. Any other suggestions?
And by the way, thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

Make sure you don't have the file named PG05IMG.zip.zip
Windows, by default, hides well known file extensions, so it may have gotten zip attached to it twice, one of which is not visible.
So remove the visible ".zip" extension and try again...

Done. Still the same result. Goes through loading the file, checking the file, and then just back to hboot.
I'm having the same issue. Does anyone have a GOOD copy of this Zip?

[Q] Stock RUU failed and won't work; basically locked out of phone. Can you help?

Hello. Never made a thread before and was really hoping I wouldn't have to or would find an answer elsewhere.
Since that didn't work out, here's my problem:
Background: Evo 3d, virgin mobile, unlocked bootloader, s-off, hboot was at 1.50, and I don't remember what the radio was at. I was running CM11 and was quite happy until two days ago when I stopped receiving texts! No clue why, just stopped. Hangouts, etc etc. Called VM and they had no idea why that was happening either. Tried switching roms, reinstalling backups, etc etc. Clean wipes and all. Then I saw someone said they had to [for some reason] reinstall everything stock and then they had messaging back. So that's what I set out to do.
In Between: Used the RUU that I'm fairly certain came with my phone. Everything was good, it erased everything, and "updated system" and signatures. It was almost finished when BAM, popped up with error 152 Image Update Error; right at the very end. Quite disappointing. Tried it multiple times again with the same result. Not sure what to do.
Current: Only screen I can see (looks like shortened bootloader screen) says "***locked***" at the top, hboot 1.57.0000, radio 1.06.00.126, then says openADSP-v02.6.0.2226.00.0217eMMc-boot
Also tried flashing the unlock_code.bin, and while it took it, it changed nothing. One screen I did see very briefly but cannot replicate said that everything was there except system. Not really sure how to take that or what to do. Any and all help would be helpful. As is it sits on the HTC screen with exclamation points in each corner. When unplugged from usb it gives me that above screen. Removing battering and restarting to bootloader still gives the same screen.
Did you run ruu through windows or pg86img.zip?

You can try this
https://www.dropbox.com/s/d4baafpgchgg4ef/ruu-PG86IMG.zip
Put that on the root of your SD card and rename to pg86img.zip
Make sure its the only one there
Boot to boot loader and accept updates
It may reboot itself to bootloader, if it asks to accept again then accept
When its done reboot your phone
Rename or remove the file when done
Hope that helps

So I have my phone working now. I think it was the RUU.exe that I was using. I downloaded a different one from here http://androidruu.com/Shooter/ after much googling. That finally restored it to original VM stock rom etc. I couldn't use your method of placing the zip onto the root of my SD because despite it being there, it wouldn't go through the normal search for the file. I would remove the battery, put it back in, use the button key combo to try and open to bootloader, and it would go but it would be the page with the status and then it would instantly go back to the black screen with HTC logo.
Thank you for your help though!
Also I'm not sure how useful exactly this will be for anyone else, but if you find yourself ruu'd and needing better files...
The hboot ENG 1.04 I got from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1817513
ALL other downloads of that hboot did not work AT ALL.
I got the updated radio from here: http://androidforums.com/cdma-evo-3d-all-things-root/648902-radios-hboot-firmware-all-downloads.html
The hboots on that site however are stock and most likely won't run the custom roms as well, if at all, as 1.04.

But the hboots on the site aren't helpful fyi

Hey, that's my thread. Just curious what you mean by the hboots aren't helpful?
If there is a problem I'm unaware of, I'd be happy to know what it is so I can get it squared away.

I must apologize! I seem to have mis stated that; they are helpful with regards to them being the stock hboots. However in my particular case those stock hboots weren't for me. I'll edit that here in a sec, but if I was going back to full stock I'd definitely use your stock VM hboot and it would be helpful in that case. Hope that makes sense, no disrespect meant!

Thanks for clarifying that! I see what you meant now.
No worries, I didn't take offense or think you were disrespectful; I just wanted to make sure the downloads were working properly!
And for the record, the stock hboots will work just fine with custom roms. Hboot 1.50 for example will be compatible with the same selection of roms as JuopunutBear 1.50.5050. The difference is that JuopunutBear is patched and will allow for extra fastboot commands and allow them to be run on a locked bootloader.
The eng 1.04 hboot allows for extra fastboot commands that the stock hboot cannot. But you can boot any rom out there on the stock hboots. I've used stock 1.50 forever on this device.
