Power button problems... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hey guys,
Ok so I have had my galaxy note for about 4 or 6 months now and it has been STELLAR!!! no problems or issues what so ever. Although yesterday it started acting up. It would randomly reboot at crazy intervals. It started only once or twice and hour than shot up to once every 2 minutes (Probably because I started paying attention to it). I thought it was the Rom I was running, so I wiped everything and flashed a new one. Same deal. I did notice though that it happened every time I pressed the power button in quick succession. I figured it might still be an issue with the software part of the phone, so I wiped EVERYTHING and returned the phone to stock through odin. Surely that would fix it?
Nope same deal on completely stock, unrooted phone. So im relatively convinced it is the physical power button that is causing the dilemma. I have insurance on the phone, but I would hate to pay the 200 dollar deductible for something as stupid as the power button. So does anyone have any idea's on how to fix this? It is really the physical button or could it be something deeper in the software that I missed? I really do not want to crack into my device (Too much tinkering, not my thing) and I do not want to pay 200 dollars for a simple button problem. So, any Ideas?!

Seems like it's the toggle for the power button is getting stuck and hard reseting the phone. Or possibly a short in the circuit from the button to the battery. If you've only had it for less than a year it is still covered under manufacturers warranty. Take it to the at&T store and tell them what's up. You will have to send it in and be without for a while until they send you a new one or fix it but it shouldn't cost you anything.
I don't know if they'd give you a replacement or temporary phone as I have never used the warranty before but it's worth a shot. Maybe do a little more research before you do that just to make sure it's nothing you did to the phone.
Hope you figure it out, good luck

Oh and just so you know the reason I say double check to make sure it's not an issue you caused is because you've already technically voided your warranty. But I view hardware issues as a manufacturer mistake. Just the same as if your phones battery overheats and catches fire, you should get a new one regardless of if it was rooted. (As long as it was a stock battery of course) just my opinion though, I don't condone committing fraud, nor am I advising it, just letting you know an option.

I had a problem like this a while back. What I did was I pulled the battery and played with the button. Pushed it, wiggled it up and down, felt the click, and just messed with it, after that, the problem seemed to have disappeared. Give that a shot first

My Sac-Town brother!!! I tried it and it didn't work ;-(
I'm wondering if my power button got mis-aligned when I took the casing off to fix the Wi-Fi antenna? I"m gonna check that and will report back later.

Let me know how it goes, I'm still debating on opening my phone to fix the GPS issue and cleaning out gunk behind the power button (pockets get dirty) but I'm suffering from an intermittent sim card issue soo yea... not sure if I want to void the hardware warranty if the sim issue becomes more persistent.

I'll call again tomorrow. In did take the front off and clean the power button area so far no issues.
Called the local At&T store. Got one dude who said there shouldn't be a problem exchanging it but the chick said nope. I'm not with At&t and she wigged out. I'll call another day and talk to someone nice lol.

Am I f'ed?

Power button went up on my tbolt. I'm rooted, my phone is stuck off and power button won't depress (mushy) so I'm stuck rooted and off. Is there any way to unroot without the use of the power button or am I ****ed?
And if I do attempt to send back a rooted phone, what is the likelihood/what will happen if/when they figure it out?
Thanks :/
Since the rooting did not cause the issue just claim a lost phone. At least you didn't break something while rooting then claim a broken phone.

Is it really that easy? We could just tell Big Red that we lost our phone.... pay the deductible and get a refurb?
My power button feels like it's about to go for me also. Probly gonna unroot before it's too late.

if its an issue with the phone not caused by u, u can claim it and usually under 1 year warranty, without charge. if u claim it lost, u have to pay for another one ($90) and they will immediately turn off ur current phone. Just a heads up, i called a few days ago, the thunderbolt is on backorder...
you are so f'd you need to bend over right now and take it like a man!
but seriously though, it is easy to just claim it lost. no biggie.
I do it twice a year ;D
[EDIT]: on a side note, its pretty easy to open the Thunderbolt up.
remove the 6 screws on the back, pry off that panel on the bottom front, then remove the 2 scews under that, you can then seperate the screen from the rest of the phonephone. after that, there's just 2 more screws on the back & once you remove that platic panel you can access the power switch directly & remove the actual "button"(if it's broken) & then just use a paperclip to power on/off

Good info thanks.
Thanks for the replies. So is there no way to do it using adb only or something? I can't really even afford the 90 dollars with the new semester expenses coming in, but obviously 90 < retail.
If I do send in for a replacement and they detect it's rooted, how does that work? I receive a letter or something? And I assume they will charge me the retail cost or..?
I broke my charger off in the power port.... I was rooted and running aosp and they replaced mine no questions asked for free.....

When they get phones back to factory they just replace the damaged part and wipe/reprogram the phone back to specs anyways.... as long as its a physical problem nit a software issue they don't really care

you should be able to pull the battery, plug in usb and then put the battery in and it should turn on. Didn't test but im pretty sure it works...
If you have the Asurion extended warranty through VZW, you might be ok.
Before I got my Thunderbolt, I had to have my Motorola Droid replaced a few times under the extended warranty (once because the B key on the keyboard stopped working, the other times because the headphone jack would start shorting out after a few months). Each time I just called Verizon, they Fedexed me a refurb with a Fedex return label, I transferred my stuff and flashed the original ROM back (but didn't remove SPRecovery because I didn't see instructions for that), and sent the old one back.
If you have to send the phone directly to HTC they might care, but I don't think VZW cares (at least not with the extended warranty).
If you're really worried about it and don't want to claim lost phone, just drop it out a 2nd or 3rd story window onto sidewalk. Say you dropped it down a flight of stairs.

Bricked myself

I bricked my Note, I was flashing cwm based recovery when it hung, screen went black and sat there for about 15 minutes before I decided to do the dumb thing of pulling the battery. Now it won't turn on, but there's good news! I hope. I get a driver sound and error when plugging it in, so it is recognizable. When checking Computer Management, I show a QHUSB_DLOAD under Other but the phone won't connect at all. Any ideas?
Have you tried putting it in download mode and see if Odin recognizes it?
Sent from my GALAXY NOTE LTE
On my vibrant and my behold 2 (both Samsung devices)
I took out the battery and plugged the USB in while holding the buttons for dl mode and it would get out of the soft brick. Once it goes into dl mode, pop the battery in, Odin should recognize it, and flash away.
Don't know if it will work, but it sounds like you didn't hard brick it

Double Post...
It won't turn on to get into DL mode. I tried to see if Odin would see it but nope. I was hoping there was another driver to allow it to see it.
Thanks for the idea, it didn't boot though. It tries, it makes the sound of the USB being inserted but then makes the error sound for failed drivers. I wouldn't think it's a hard brick either, but even my JIG won't get it to boot.
i had a hard brick after flashing a kernel. not sure what the problem was but it wouldnt go into download mode, so i pulled the battery for about 5 minutes and it went into download mode and odin recognized my phone.
Would the phone turn on? I'll give it a try. I've left it out for 30 seconds and that didn't work, I'll let it go longer.

I left it out for awhile, I think I'll see if Best Buy will give me a new phone tomorrow. I just found a thread on the other note side that had this same issue, he ended up not being able to fix it too. Thanks for trying to help though, it's what makes XDA what it is.

That's what I planned on doing. lol. If nothing else, I could sign up for their black tie program, come back monday during my lunch and get it swapped then and they could say nothing about it.
An update on the situation, I left the battery out of the phone overnight and tested it when I woke up, nothing. So I took the phone to BB and they said they wouldn't take it back unless I wanted to spend $170 to replace it. I took it to AT&T and they did everything they thought would get it to work, it wouldn't naturally, so they warrantied it and I have a new one coming in a few days.

Ive never heard of anyone getting radioshacks insurance and I sell phones. A quick google search on their protection showed class action suits against them for misrepresenting their protection. Oh and it's more expesive them best buys lol
And to the OP, you could have also done the monthly best buy protection instead of the 170 2 year plan, they could have also replaced it under manufacturers warranty for your situation. I hate when people work for the same company as me and are uneducated at their jobs.
Glad all is well but for future reference what should you have done? I mean, if i flash something and it goes wrong, the first thing I'd do would be pull the battery. What should we do?

If you were hard bricked, your phone wouldn't have booted. A hard brick is a permanent thing. What you had was a soft brick.

Think my S3 is hard bricked, what do?

Hi guys, my phone is flashed so I guess that will make this whole process painful...
But here is the story, I have omega version 12.1 I think (maybe 11 or 13) it has been on my phone for 1 + months now, so I am fairly certain it isn't anything to do with firmware. Phone wont turn on, wont go into download mode or anything. I have tried taking the battery out and leaving it out for 5 minutes, still nothing.
It was working fine before I went to bed, had 10 percent battery and was just on home screen when I put it on charge, not in app or anything. Then seems to be hard bricked after waking up, so happened sometime overnight.
I am not with a carrier, brought it locally outright at my local consumers electronics store (JB-HI-FI)
Since it is hard bricked to the point it wont turn on in download mode does that mean there is no way for them to know it is flashed unless they fix it (in which all is ok)?
Never done a warranty return, do I just take it into store and they send it off? How long will this take?
On top of all this I cut my old sim doown using a cutting template, and it appeared to slide in fine, but after trying to remove it today the push eject isn't working, and tips to get this out, doesn't appear to be enough room to grip it with tweesers.
Thanks.
So as we keep on saying in all posts, the next step u have to make is try with an usb jig.
U know what is that?

Since it's already harbricked, i'd say just turn it in and let Samsung fix it for you. It is under warranty, and last time i brought in my i9000 that I bricked, they just replaced the phone. the jig is ok only if you already know where to get one or how to make one, but if you have to go out of your way for it, just use the warranty.

Ok, Think that is best, can't really go without phone for 2-3 weeks while waiting for a JIG to arrive.
Just a few questions about the service centre, do you think they will ask me if I have flashed the phone? Cause I'm afraid they will think the brick was caused by that (could be) but probably unlikely since it died during the night a month after its latest flash.
If they do get it working will they go in and check the flash counter? Then what happens?
And lastly, if they ask me if I have flashed it should I lie and say no?
Thanks for the help.

Nope brisbane here, thanks for the offer though. What would the chances be of a JIG fixing it though, cause I have a feeling the mainboard has died. Kinda wish I didn't turn off the red LED charging light, apparently some others who's phones hardbricked the light still turned on showing some sign of life.
Any suggestions on sorting out the micro sim card issue now, assume I have to get it our before taking it to service centre, or just leave it in for them to fix?

-it will force the S3 in download mode
BUT
-it will not reset the flash counter like with S2
Got a little bit of good news, this might help other people out with jammed sim cards, NO damage and worked like a treat.
In the top of the sim card holder down the bottom left there is a little circle around one mill wide, got a sharp thumbtack and pushed it gentelly into the sim card, the just applied a little pressure and the sim card started to slide up, was very easy, had a great grip on the sim cad and no damage done trying to grab it with needle nose pliers like I read elsewhere, now to get the phone replaced or unbricked.
Thinking about it more I think it is a hardware fault, cause I had flashed the correct version of omega for international S3, I havn't had any wrong signs like freezing or crashing, been working flawlessly for over a month, then out of the blue completely dead. So I think I will just go into the service centre and tell them I suspect the motherboard has died, or the charger port (didn't charge over night), dont have a spare battery to test with though).

That video is pretty cool, don't have an old connector to try it, but seeing as my phone didn't hard brick from a flash going wrong while flashing or wrong firmware or anything I have a feeling a JIG or similar wont work. Would try it if I had the connector though.
How often do batterys and charger ports fail, cause that could be another reason I guess.

Exactly. There were no problems with the flashing part, i think ypu have a hardware issue.
They didn't ask me anything really, just asked what happened prior to the phone dying.
But i was ready to lie my ass off.. lol!
Dont say anything about flashing. They wont even bother trying to flash the phone if they dont get it into download mode.

Ok, thanks for the info, I've tried everything besides a JIG to try get it into a download mode, so I doubt they will get it into download mode, Ive seen a couple of other cases where the S3 has had a mainboard issue, only other thing is in the last week I have been using the wall charger where as I normally use the computer and usb, so not sure if this could link to it though, might have got a power surge, but had no storms in months so unlikely and the fuse box is modern with pretty good protection. Ill just go in and tell them it was working one night, and dead when I woke up the next morning, which is the truth. And if they ask if its flashed, ill miss understand them and say, not the screen wasn't flashing/flickering when it died, I was asleep
Reality is though if they get the phone to a restored point to where they can see the flash counter, then I no longer need their help to fix it.
One more question. At the service centres do they try fix it while I'm there, or do they tell s to come back in a few hours, or do they ring a few days later. And if they can't get it in download mode do they normally give you a replacement there? Or do they ship it off to get parts replaced and then ship it back taking weeks/months?
Thanks
I'd give the jig a chance. Just imho.
Btw it is very likely that the jig would arrive in, like, 24-48 hours if you choose the right seller, while other users already told you it's probably gonna take more then a few days (probably from 2 weeks to a month) for samsung to "close the ticket". In my experience only with apple you'd be up and running in less then a week.

I have the same issue so thought i would post here rather than starting a new thread.
Here's the story for mine. Working fine on current rom for about a month no issues at all. Today battery got to about 9% then switched off and i haven't been able to get it to turn on again, no download mode,no recovery, no charging led nothing at all.
I had to change my screen a couple of days ago, has been working fine with the broken screen for months, have i now voided my warranty?
A lot of faulty s3 i think... My s3 suddenly died last night. Battery is around 90+. Check the phone and it's not responding. Power button doesn't work. Doesn't even go to download mode or recovery mode. I'm running on stock ICS with root only. Sad part is I don't have any access for a jig right now. So can't test it. Bought this phone in SG and I'm in the Philippines right now. Warranty is good for SG only. Dec would be my next trip back to SG. By then no S3 as of now. For a phone I'm getting depressed LOL!
over the air jellybean brick my phone unrooted unflashed phone
BEWARE EVERYONE!! when updating to jellybean some do go very wrong! not all! but some do!! and it will brick your phone!! i updated over the air.. and for a few days. my phone kept on freezing! and locking up! one night i went to bed woke up and the phone was stuck on the boot screen! i thought thats weird took battery out, put back in, as ya do.. nothing took sim out and back in nothing... so only option was to reapair it through kies. put serial in and model number in it found the sortware. i downloaded it. told me to put phone in recovery mode.. so i did, kies said it was gonna install it to my phone.. but everytime it tryed to install it kept on saying it couldnt find my phone.. i tryed this all day long used different usb ports. different computers. to know avail, so my only option was to take it in for repair.. so i took it back to phones 4 u! they sent it away, i waited over 2 weeks! which was undiscrible it was like i lost my right arm with no phone! as you can imagine.. than the repair center turned round and said that the phone has been rooted! which it hadnt!! and they said this in order to brake the terms and conditions of my warentee so phones 4 u can get out of giving me a new handset. so they all save money!! i wouldnt do that to a 500 pound phone!! the phone does everything you could want from a phone! im launching a full investigation into this matter.. and have writen a formall complaint to phones 4 u headoffice, and will be contacting trading standards, ofcom, watchdog, and the ombudsman, and plaster it on all the forums ,social networking sights i can think of, to give them as much bad press as possible!! untill my problem is resolved and i will restore there name and clear it once they have done the right thing by me
I am afraid I can also report a bricked S3 here.
Rooted two weeks ago, but did not yet install a rom. Didn't Triangleaway yet aswell.
Same problem as described, I was browsing the net, and suddenly, screen went black (off). Could not get it powered on anymore. (nor in download/recovery mode)
So i brought it to the local telecom service center of my office, they could tell me the battery was fine and the buttons were working but they never saw one in this state.
So they are sending it to a samsung repair company.
This was two days ago, heard nothing yet, but I am very curious if I will get repaired or if I need to pay because of the rooting.
Will post the result if I know more.
Does anyone know if this problem also happens to people who did not root?

Screen goes crazy then freezes

Just wondering if anyone else is having this issue. Today while using my phone in different apps the phone would suddenly stop recognizing touch input and while I wasn't touching it the apps would behave as if someone was touching it all over. I'd try exiting the app, but the capacitive buttons would not function. I hit the power button and when I came back from the lockscreen I was able to exit and everything worked for a while. Then it started happening again. I did a restart and it was still happening. Turned the power completely off, left it for a while, and then turned back on and haven't noticed it again, but haven't been using it much.
I've been on meanrom for a couple days and this just happened today. Anyone else experience something like this? I'm hoping it doesn't happen again and if it does that it isn't a hardware issue. A real downer if I have to flash it again because I just got everything the way I like it, but I'd rather do it again than have to send it for repair.
Could be the kernel, are you using an overclocked kernel?
Yes, I believe meanrom comes with an overclocked kernel. I would get the non-overclocked version if I could, but that doesn't seem to be an option. I'd ask about the issue in the rom thread, but I can't yet.

MR 4.8.1 comes with [email protected] default and 1.5ghz and 1.8ghz as options check the MeanROM-ICS folder for the othe 2 options
Some kernels undervolt as a way to conserve power, they use other tricks like predetermined voltage stepping and may have modified governors as well. Any one of those can cause issues with hardware, then again it could be a simple ground issue with you phone. Have you tried pressing the edges of the screen? It may not be sitting correctly, the og EVO screens would have issues with grounding when the screens for what ever reason would start lifting.
Ah, thanks! I'll give that a try.
Seriously you guys are freakin awesome. And so fast. Thank you! XDA is lucky to have you guys. Glad I joined. :victory:

Sounds like a digitizer issue to me.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
That may very well be the case but, digitizer issues can still be attributed to a ground fault, undervolting or voltage stepping. I'm sure op will let us know, I too am leaning towards hardware failure though
Bad news. I tried one of the developer tools that shows a line for pointer location. It appears I have a dead zone. I had tested out this tool before and it was a constant line, but now it always skips over the same spot (a horizontal strip). It came back briefly, but now it seems to be really dead.
I might try a full wipe and flashing another rom, but this does seem to be a hardware issue. Really disappointed since I just got the phone. It never got rattled or dropped or anything. I guess I'll have to go for repair, but anyone know if there's a chance that I can get the repair guy to leave s-off? Also through TEP there shouldn't be a deductible for repair, right?
Thanks again om4 and bigdaddy619 for all the assistance.
A lot of sprint repair centers no longer work on damaged screens. They don't have any legitimate reason not to either. Sucks to have to get it replaced

Had to get a replacement, but figured out why the Sprint centers don't do screen repairs anymore. According to the repair person at the store I went to, the insurance felt there was some fraud going on with the employees selling screen parts. Apparently there is a big market for smartphone screen parts. So the policy is that phones must be sent in for a refurbished replacement if the problem is with the screen. Since mine was new though, I got a new replacement.
I was told that it was due to the overall cost....what you said makes way more sense. Way to go dbags, making things so much more complicated for regular customers

[Q] Is my phone permabricked?

So last night, when going to charge my phone, I notice that turning the screen on wasn't bringing me to my lockscreen. Instead it was a black screen with a line in the middle. It looked like the screen off animation got stuck on the screen. So I rebooted it and it was fine.
Today, I wake up and it won't respond at all. Holding the power button does nothing, it doesn't look like it's charging either. I know that I have it set up to run lagfix at night, could that have been the cause of this? Is there any way to come back from a brick?

Yup, there is a way to fix this. Visit your local Sprint store and have it replaced. Hope you have insurance, if not its $50. Gods peed to you.

No insurance. :crying:
After plugging the device into the computer, it says QHSUSB_DLOAD. So I guess that confirms it was from lagfix.

Well you're going to have to pay the $50 then. And yea its from the "lagfix". That "lagfix" is really just TRIM. It's disabled off CM10.2 currently for this exact reason. It's been having a grand ole time causing a brickfest.

I thought even if you had insurance you had to pay to get a replacement? Isn't only the in-store repair free?

You only pay the deductible if the phone is lost or stolen. For hardware failure, with TEP, there should be no charge for a replacement device.
Jtag might be another alternative, as well. Shoot XDA member Zarboz a PM for more info.

PM'd Zarboz. But is there any way for me to unbrick it myself? I'd really like to leave going to sprint or mailing my phone away as a last resort. I've found a few unbricking tutorials, but they say that they're only for bricks that occur when going S-Off. Would it be crazy to try one of those anyway?

It won't work. You're not the first person to have this type of brick. It occurs as a result of faulty hardware, which can only be replaced, or flashed directly with JTAG (and even then, you'd still have the same hardware, and be prone to the same issue again).
I guess you missed the part in the Lagfree app OP that mentions the "brick bug."

Well, no, I saw it. I thought I would be fine because I only saw the affected devices as samsung ones. Thanks for the input though. I'll just replace it or wait until I can upgrade.

Might help if you go to the thread and mention that this device appears to be affected as well, otherwise more may suffer your fate.
Bricked??
Yesterday I restored a backup that I've been running for mounths, restored fine and no issues. Today I got a text went to unlock the device, had snow like an old tv with no signal. I pressed home and got the lock screen but there was major screen tear and the device was very slow to respond. I managed to get to twrp recovery and there was also screen tear/snow and the middle 2/4 was not there and non responsive, so couldn't wipe, fix perms or restore any thing. Tried that a few times, now the only response I get is I hold the power button for 10-15 seconds, capasitive buttons flash, let go of button, half a second later there is a quick vibration and black screen. I can't get in to the bootloader or recovery. Am I hosed?? tia Also when I charge it the light doesn't go on
I too had this issue, but my phone went white then turned off and never turned
Back on. It was a hardware failure. They replaced mine for free.

If I still had insurance I would do this, but I'm not sure a new Evolte is worth $50 to me, especially with my upgrade around the corner. I'll just have to say farewell to this phone. It was a good run.

Let charge for a while it booted and got stuck on the splash screen but the coloring was off. I plugged it in to the computer ran "adb devices" and it found it said recovery and a long number. I tried "adb reboot bootloader" black screen and that was it.

Looks like an issue with the screen. If you have TEP I'd take it to Sprint and let them look at it. Shouldn't cost you anything to get it replaced.

Wow, you guys were right, you do get a free replacement.
At first, I was set on just living with my mother's old SG4G, but I couldn't stand how outdated it was. The screen looked meh, and I couldn't even install Chrome on it. So I was ready to pay the $50 to replace it, went to sprint with my evolte, and the guy there said he could only service active phones. So he changed my active phone back to my evolte, and added insurance to it. So I walked in with a broken phone without insurance, and left with a new phone for free. I'd say that's a lucky day.
Thanks for your advice guys, you guys just got me a new phone for free.
