[Q] Battery Drain due to media scanner - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
a few days ago i have change my Rom to JB and since then i have a battery drain issues due to media scanner.
i have tried, re-installing my Rom a few time and read on it's forums. but nothing i have done didn't fix that problem.
my battery us ending after 6 hours of use...
in the forum of my Rom there is a replay about this issue and they give a ZIP to fix the problem, I have install the ZIP but it didn't fix the problem...
The only thing i found that helping, is to remove my 32Gb SD and change it to 2Gb SD, when i do that i don't suffer from the media scanner and my battery is lasting all most two days without a charge.
But i wish to use my 32Gb SD as i need the space and i can't put it back in due to this problem, i have tried to put it back in without my MP3 that were on it after i have format it, but that didn't help also.
Does any one have any idea how to help me fix this problem?
I am using Samsung Galaxy S2 with Omega V17 Rom.
Thank you.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012452 just read the first bit about media scanner

Sorry i didn't mention this but i have tried those apps and on my phone it didn't work...
have any other ideas?

Delete any mp3 files that can't be played and any other corrupt files

Flashed this via Mobile Odin and no media scanner issue. Maybe it'll work for you.

I think i found a way around it...
I just replace my 32Gb SD to 16Gb SD and the phone seems to work just fine, i don't see any media scanning and now i have more SD space then 2Gb so this is better then nothing...
Thank you all for your help.

It's not a bug, it's supposed to scan your internal and external SD storage for new files everytime you restart the device...
Yeah !!!! But still when i was in Gingerbread... It used to be so quick... But now it's soooooo slow even grand mum can run faster than that !!!!1
Hmm, mine only takes about 3-5 seconds, but I only have a 2GB external SD card and practically nothing stored on either storage medias. How long does it take?
For my x-Gingerbread it takes about 3 or 4 seconds
For my current Ice cream sandwich it takes about a 30 and half seconds lol...
Crap !!!
i think thats a kernel thing as the kernals and roms stabilities increase they will be then able to tweak the performances like the batteries which are good and a lot better than they were.
It's got nothing to do with the kernel optimisations, I'm running a stock setup and media scanner is quite fast (with plenty of files in both internal and external storages). Remove the media scanner database to force a fresh re-scan or use one of the tools mentioned in my post here.

Phone not recognising microSD card properly

Hi all,
My O1 has a problem wherein some apps recognise the files present on the SD card and some don't. I'm going to eloborate the scenario below.
Well, firstly the current ROM i'm running is the latest MIUI by Zack, which i had installed yesterday night. But prior to that i was running the stable CM7.2 with the candied kernel by DjnoXD.
While i was running the CM7, i noticed that only PowerAmp was able to detect my music present in the microSD card. Apps such as GentleAlarm, JetAudio, Fusion Music player and the default music player wasn't able to detect any music on my phone. So i assumed that the microSD card has ran it's course, since it was more than 2+ years old.
So yesterday, i bought a SanDisk Ultra 16GB class 10 card, and I installed MIUI on it, and to my disappointment, MIUI player didn't detect any music player, same result with JetAudio, Fusion and GentleAlarm. Yet somehow PowerAmp magically is able to detect the music!
Now I'm sure this problem is not because of a faulty microSD card, Kernel or the ROM.
I hope i have provided enough information, If more is needed please inform me about it.
What could be the problem? I searched a lot before making this thread.
Regards,
CD
Edit: I'm facing a lot of signal loss recently... Could this be due to a damaged hardware? I did drop the phone a couple of times

I never liked Clockwork recovery or the ROM Manager, I use amonra recovery and MIUI doesn't have ROM Manager... Also i did check for the .nomedia file using root explorer, i didn't find it in the .nomedia file in the ringtones/alarm/music folders...
I feel my phone has a hardware damage as the signal keeps getting lost way too often after i dropped the phone... It wasn't a very steep fall, probably it fell on a delicate spot which i presume is located where the sd card and antenna is located(i.e., at the top of the phone)
Can this be fixed by servicing? My phone's out of warranty anyways... or do i buy another phone?
Does your sdcard work fine otherwise? Can you view pictures/documents or move apps to sd? If so, it looks like for some reason the phone is not scanning for music files and building it's music database. Why don't you try flashing another gingerbread or an ics rom to test?
Nothing is wrong with your phone. There can be many reasons for this problem.
Copy entire microsd card to your PC. Now delete all the useless folders created by so many music
players you used.. in the copied folder. Search for .nomedia in complete copied
folder.
Format your microsd card.. (fat32). Copy everything back. Done!!!
Dont do this if you dont have knowledge about which folders to keep and delete.
I recomend you to use only one music player at a time!!
> search for .nomedia files on folder and delete those.
Sent from my little fingers.. to your face using XDA app
I had deleted all the .nomedia files present... yet i had the problem. So I formatted my sd card again, created a 512 MB ext2 partition, a 64MB swap partition and the rest as FAT32 via the recovery.
I flashed the latest CM7 nightly and the default music player is able to recognise the files...
However randomly, the music apps keep scanning for media files and show 0 results... it's as if the sd card slot is loosly attached to the phone.
The signal keeps dropping often, and i'm sure it's not the network problem as i have an older nokia phone which has full signal... i mean at times, if ppl call my o1, i'm unreachable yet if the nokia is called at the same time, people are able to connect...
I suspect it's some hardware fault... Can it be fixed?

Cant be sure about your network problem. May be baseband not properly flashed.
Second.. go to network preferences and select Only Gsm or Only Wcdma. Not auto.
If you are using a2sd or link2sd.. Dont move the default music player to sd card.

I Will try the gsm/wcdma only option.
Im sure I flashed the new baseband correctly as Ive been using it for more than 8-9 months...
I'll test this for a while...
Could be a long shot, but maybe try to GENTLY clean the contacts on the SD card slot.
Sorry to hear you are still having these issues.
If I had the money for it... I would upgrade to a more powerful phone hehe. Not that it helps your current issue...

Well, I've gently pressed the sd card slot hoping it would fix the problem ... I'll test this phone for a couple of weeks, and if the problem persits, I'll give it for servicing to a known person rather than a LG service centre...
I can manage with random unmounting issue , but random/often signal losses defeats the purpose of having a phone...

[Q] Battery is @ 77% with 22m off charge, help please HAH!

So a bit of background. I'm running:
ROM: [ROM][AOSP][JB][4.1.2][JZO54K] SuperNexus - I777 - BUILD 5
Kernel: Siyah - JELLYBEAN - ICS [v4.3.3]
Currently phone is telling me media is 82% of my usage and I have absolutely no clue what that could be. I'm not downloading anything.
I've had the battery for over 1+ year so I know I'm due for a replacement but this usage rate seems ridiculous.
Any thoughts? Thanks friends.
Media scanner going crazy. Download an app from the play store to stop it from acting wonky. Yes u can find the name of the app. I believe in u.
Yeah one night my media scanner went crazy and made my phone feel like it was about to melt. It was draining the battery on the charger. I didn't download an app to stop the media scanner but I don't see it scan anymore. Now I just use an app/widget that scans when you press it.

Had this problem a long time ago..
Try adding a blank file named .nomedia on the internal and sd card root...
That fix it for me. Good luck there hope this helps

I had that issue, media scanner would not stop. I took my 32 GB SD card out, moved the files I needed, reformatted it (didn't use quick format, did it the long way), stuck the files back, and put it back in the phone. Now no more media scanner running always. I had read somewhere that the file structure on the external media card could get messed up causing that issue.

Probably an overactive media scanner (android media process). I have the same problem since updating to the stock official 4.1.2 XXLS8.
I'm not sure what the solution is. You can disable the android media process (application manager -> media storage -> select and disable). However, if you do so then not only do you lose access to media files in the standard music and video players, but you also lose all your sound files for ringtones, notifications, email and SMS alerts etc. So as solutions go that one's a bit rubbish...
Rescan Media Root is also ineffective. I don't know why, possibly something to do with Jellybean that prevents it from working.
I've seen many posts in different forums about this, it seems to be a common issue with the 4.1.2 JB releases. Some say it is partly fixed in JB 4.2 but that isn't much use to us right now.
You could try reformatting your memory card as some say that corrupted files cause the problem. However, others say this 'fix' is unsuccessful and the excessive scanning continues regardless.

Try this workaround:
Copy you DCIM folder to your External SD Card. Empty Internal SD card's DCIM folder (files, not the folders, just leave it empty).
Set your external SD Card's DCIM folder to default for pics & video.
Reboot.

Sadly no change for me.
Emptied DCIM on internal SD, camera was already set to external SD for storage. Rebooted, and Android Media Process is now busy hammering my CPU again.
This is so frustrating. I lose 50% battery in ten hours, and I'm now scared to actually use the device at all when I'm out and about for fear of losing power altogether. Google have known about it since October - see this issue thread.
I had similar issues after I've installed the same rom on my phone. After a few awful days of fiddling with it and endless cycles of recharging, I've decided to do a clean reinstall. After I did a clean install last night, everything seemed better. The battery wasn't overheating, wasn't even draining that fast. During the night (5 hours of sleep I got, actually), BetterBatteryStats had shown me that I had only ~5 minutes of awake state vs the 5hrs of deep sleep.
But! Today after work, my battery started going crazy again. Left work with ~35% and I've discharged it completely after some 30-40 minutes of Ingress play (gps + 3g + screen on). Something's awfully wrong with this version, no fix worked for me (except the mediascanner issue which resolved itself after I did a clean install).
Any and every advice is more than welcome.

Try freezing gallery as soon as it boots, check with betterbattery stats if media scanner stops when you do.
If it stops it within 50 seconds or so make sure you have no files at all in internal DCIM, only the -empty- cache folder inside.

Hello,
I have also installed JB through Odin and facing same battery drain issue. It's finishing like a in a day without using any high app ( FB, Browsing, Twitter etc)
Please help me or I'll need to roll back to ICS .
you're kidding me right?
20 hours with 35% left on battery and 44% screen usage?
Bluetooth on, avast and who knows what more crap you got there. Every app running in background drains your battery, but again, you are looking at a 3 % / hour drain.

No, I am not kidding. it was just opened to test and received a reply on twitter once the wifi connected. If I am not using my phone and let it without open anything. Next day it will be at 70% which does not seem right to me. ICS was much better, I was using wifi and 3g as well almost all day than it used to go be on 40-50%.

Battery drainage + Media files scanning takes forever

Hi.
So it's been 9 months since I'm using my LG Optimus l9 P765 and for the first 7 months it was perfectly fine. Later on, I was having battery draining problems ; like 50%+ battery draining overnight when not charging. Currently, I'm having 2 problems at the same time : Battery Drainage and Media files scanning.
Day before yesterday, I was using my phone at night until it was 60%. I left it and woke up in the morning finding my phone was shut down (0%) and I started charging it. The Media files started to scan and it didn't complete till the night! Today morning, when I woke up at 6, the SD card files were scanning yet! That's almost 2 days and media files not scanned. Also, I clicked on "app info" while the media files were scanning and I "Force Stopped" System UI. Now it's still scanning the media files.
For the battery problem ;
I have battery use :
Phone Idle ALWAYS above 45%
sdCard ALWAYS above 25%
Android OS Above 10%
Wifi/Android System/Hike/What'sApp/Facebook around 1-5%.
Wil factory reset help with these problems? If not please help me with a solution!
Thanks in advance!
EDIT : My phone has a internal memory of around 2GB and SDCARD 16GB.
EDIT : I think this problem is occuring ever since I Upgraded to a new android version (did that a few months ago)

Hello and thanks for your reply.
I've heard about Deep Sleep Battery Saver, I read about it online and it specifies that it kill's background processes and sync's only once every 30 minutes. I get a lot of What'sApp/Hike messages which I sometimes have to reply to in every 30 minutes so I don't think it's pretty much a good option for me.
I'll surely check out Greenify and tell you if it helps!
Also, if you might, can you explain the sdcard copying and other things? I didn't catch up with your first option!

If you have ROOT, you can uninstall the media scanner service completely. In ES Files Explorer, Turn on Root Explorer, then tap on "Root Explorer" Not the on button but the actual icon, Uninstall System app, type Media in Search, then uninstall it. Should solve that issue, because Media Scanner made by LG is coded SO horribly, it took ages on mine too. Note I am using the p769 version, SO far, to me it's been safe so yeah. Just use a different Gallery and music player in it's place and voila. NEVER deal with it again... ever. Make sure you do a Backup in Recovery, because things may go wrong for different people.
This can be caused by an excessive number of files on the device. Often lost cache files, after their index has been damaged. These then can only be deleted with a filemanager. In my case Dolphin browser has a tendency to produce such junk. The Storage Analyzer app is helpful in finding out where the stuff might sit. Search for app directories with hundreds or thousands of files, and if they're in a folder called cache or webview, they are quite safe to delete.

I wnt to add one more thing in my case internal sd card tack only 3-5sec (no media file) and 16gb sd card around 30-50 sec (5gb song, 3gb photo, 1gb video and 3gb other things ) since u are using from long time without factory reset installed many app and many of them may be removed many app creat junk as stated by member. If scanning time is more on internal memory (if media file is there may take more time) i think u need factory reset (first tack necessary backup)
