Restore Contacts - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My mom currently owns this phone and she was experiencing lag with the phone and the rep told her to do a factory reset. of course, she lost all of her contacts now they cant figure out how to get them back.
Is there a way that I could recover her contacts only after the phone has been through a factory reset?
Thanks in advance.

I assume This Was a non rooted Phone with stock, So unless u synced it to Google or make a backup manually... I Dont think u can recover :-\

just sync using google account and all contacts will be restored. :good:

It's fairly obvious the phone contacts weren't synced to Google in the first place, so there's nothing to sync back from Google
OP - Time to get her in the habit of syncing contacts to/from Google everyday now this has happened to prevent a recurrence.

if she had setup a google account (which she could have), the contacts were synced. And there is no issue with a try or is there one ? Cheers.

Gmail Sync Problems

Hi,
I'm having problems syncing my contacts from my phone to my Gmail account. Basically, they're syncing the wrong way!
If I put a new number in my phone then sync to Gmail the number is deleted as it isn't already in my Gmail contacts list.
Surely this is the wrong way around? Surely it should add the new number to my Gmail account? After all, the phone is the logical place to create new contacts.
So, what am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?
If it matters I'm running Vodafone branded firmware: Baseband 1.2.28, Build R2BA024.
Thanks.

could it be you're editing your contacts on gmail as well? then again.. it couldn't be because it's 2 different contacts right?
how bout, if you create an account in google contacts? does it get synced with your fone and show up there?
Yeah if I add a contact to Gmail it syncs to my phone fine. Just not the other way around.
*confused*

i also have a question to this case. obviously (and i think this is also the reason why this thread was opened) gmail sync only syncs the contacts from your gmail-account to the phone...actually it would be more valuable if i could transfer the contacts from my phone to my gmail-account, as it would also be a kind of backup if something happens to my device.
it is also a thing of daily routine, if i receive a new number or mailadress, i do save it in my phone. because of the only sync-direction gmail->phone, i have to sit in front of my pc in the evening and add the new contact details to my gmail-account...? wouldn't it be easier if i could start a transfer from my phone TO gmail?!?!

My thoughts exactly! Far more logical that way around.
The weird thing is, it used to work that way for me. Now it doesn't. As far as I'm aware I haven't changed any settings on either my phone or my gmail account. Very strange!
Tried clearing the cache btw and that hasn't solved the problem.

so you already did that with your X10? you transferred the contacts of your phone to gmail?
of course it would be perfect, if i could chose which side should synchronize with the other...
e.g. if i need to reset my phone, then i'd love to get my contacts back from gmail!
hope, that somebody can help us here!

Yeah. As far as I'm aware it used to sync in both directions. When I first got my phone I ran a manual sync and all my contacts appeared on my phone. Then if I added one to my phone, or changed one, and ran another sync it would update my gmail contacts with the new/changed one.
Now it doesn't. Strange!
The only thing I can think it would be is that I changed the last part of my address from googlemail.com to gmail.com.
I wonder if that might have something to do with it?

hey dont worry for that part as it syncs all contacts in a very clever way, for eg i had flashed my phone several times and didnt kept backup of my contacts(apart from one on gmail) and when i was done with flashing i just use to sync them again with gmail and voila..ph got updated according to copy of gmail contacts...so it doesnt deleates the contacts on gmail...

hm, so it should normally align both states maybe? is the sync-function really checking the contacts of the phone and those in gmail an adds only the contacts on that side, where they are missing?
well, i have tried the sync once and it deleted all the new contacts on my phone! there was only a transfer of my gmail-contacts to my X10...phone book was ignored and even overwritten!
any hints what sunjin an i do wrong?

It used to sync both ways for me but now it doesn't. This is very, VERY annoying as I frequently add new contacts to my phone but I now have to remember to go add them to Gmail too or they get deleted next time I sync. Illogical if you ask me.
Can anyone with a different phone/version of Android confirm if this happens to you also?

[Q] Backing up My Contact Question

Hi GUYS!
I just bought the Thunderbolt, My very first Droid very very happy!
My question is how do i back up my contacts..
I rooted my phone last week, and have installed perfect storm ROM. and backed everything up with Titanium Back up.
However, I realize that every time a new ROM or updated version comes out, I would have to wipe all my data. I only restore User Apps and no the System Data, becomes this is a new rom. Or should i restore all??
So my question is what files do i need to restore from Titanium backup to restore my contacts. because it gets very annoying having to link my contacts between Google email account, and Exchange each time.
**is there a way I can save all the phone contacts i have from exchange, and link that to Google permanently?
So when i updated my Google account, all my number would come out..
or is there a file i can restore through my Ti Backup to save all that hassle, Everytime I wipe.
Thanks Guys!
Your contacts should have sync'd to your online Google account.
That's the beauty of Android. Once everything is sync'd up. You can change phones, log into your google account and just resync all your info immediately.
hey buddy,
how do i sync all my contact to my google account now?

yea importing contacts can be bad if you have google sync on, it will create duplicate contacts if you restore contacts and alot of hassle removing the dupes
If you add your contacts as Google contacts you can edit them/view them online at http://www.google.com/contacts . They will automatically sync up then. Also, there are programs on Market you can get to save the contacts as well. Lastly, with most roms, once you get going with it, you don't *always* have to wipe; oftentimes you can just do it as an upgrade. At least that's what I can tell.

check under accounts and sync and make sure your google sync is on, contacts calendar and mail. when you save contacts on your phone you are given 2 options, phone contact or google contact. always choose google contact if you want them auto synced. Phone contacts wont get backup unless you use Verizon's Backup Assistant or use a 3rd party program like Ti Backup Pro or some other software to do it. Easier to use google contact and forget about it.
I came from a blackberry with Exchange mail.. So all my contacts are actually stored in my exchange mail. So is there a way where I can just sync all my contact information from Exchange mail to Google account.
I hate having to link both google info with my exchange mail info.. A couple of times i don't mind, but if i want to play around and update roms frequently i rather not deal with this type of problem if its avoidable.
Once you are all updated on your Google account, anytime you change roms and you get the "Welcome to Android" startup screen (If you wipe your phone prior to changing roms), once you put in your google ID and password, your phone will "pull" the contact information to your phone from your google account, so you won't need to re-input anything.
Only time you may have an issue is if you had a contact on your phone and for whatever reason you did not sync before wiping, you may lose any added contacts that didn't get sync'd up.
The easiest way I backed up my contacts was just make a vcard back up from the menu in messaging app to your SD card and then restoring it from your SD card when your done flashing. It was very fast and easy for me.

Quick question. When i export my contacts out of my phone book, to my sd card. when i do a wipe. does the wipe, wipe everything on the sd card as well.
sorry i'm very new.. been using a blackberry for the last 4 years.. and this has been an amazing moment in my life.. the only thing i miss is the keypad on my bold.. but the gingerbread keypad is making my transition a silky smooth one.
*i just imported my contact info from my exchange to Google.. Now my google is up to date.. i think i'm ready to play.

wipe wont wipe your sdcard, unless you physically do so in clockwork recovery.
Sounds like you got everything set up. Congrats on your new phone!
On a side-note. You have an Android, not a Droid. The Droids are a specific set of Verizon Android devices.

Importing contacts from google - Cyanogen

Just installed Cyanogen along with google apps. I was under the impression that once google is installed, my contacts would be imported automatically once I entered my email. That's not the case though and for the life of me I can't seem to import them at all.
What am I missing here?

Unfortunately not. Since the Vibrant I guess I stupidly assumed all roms would sync automatically.
Any ideas? Is it supposed to sync automatically with google installed? Just trying to figure it out.

Yes, definitely. My contacts are permanently on google within my gmail account.
I've since had to flash back to an older rom as I had to go out and needed my contacts on there. From what I saw though I'd absolutely love to go back to CM7 asap (it's beautiful) so I really want to find a solution to this. Cause while I can now back up my contacts on my sim or vcard then put them on CM7, what's gonna happen when I'm constantly adding new names (which I do daily)? I don't want to have to manually keep backing my contacts up.
Isn't google apps supposed to take care of that on CM7? I'm just thinking that something is off with my setup. Surely CM7 is supposed to constantly sync your contacts (like all other roms) once google apps is installed, no?
Edit: I got it sorted out. Google apps wasn't installing properly before. It works perfectly now.

How to update google contacts

Dumb question, but I have yet to figure it out LOL. So I got 2 new phones for my kids and I add them to my contact list and sync contacts, but everytime I flash a new rom and log in to my google account the 2 new phones are never on my contact list and I continually have to re add them. How do I get my contacts to sync and update to my google account ?
Thanks for any help it's driving me nuts.
When you add a contact, there are options to save to the phone, google, or sim card, make sure you change from phone, to google.

Since we're on this topic, I've noticed that when I edit a google contact on my phone it only stays changed for a few mins until it re-syncs with google contacts and then it goes back to the way it was. How can I set it so that I can edit info on the phone and it'll update the contact on google's servers. It seems like its only a one way sync on this HTC phone. I've had galaxy S phones before and never had this problem. Thanks.

I have the same problem on an SG3. It is driving me crazy. At the moment is seems that the only way to get a new contact on the phone is to enter it into Google first.
This seems to be a big problem for a lot of people.
I expect that there is some simple answer and that it is simply that smething which is being misunderstood - but if some knows the answer and could post it here - there would be a lot of grateful people.
There is also the option to back your phone up with your google account when you first sync it. DoD you select that?

I hope I'm doing this right

i have the same problem and it drives me crazy. when i update a Google contact on my phone and after manually sync the contacts, it doesn't get updated on my Google account on the net.
please advice.
Complaints here are worthless without saying what code is being run. I use rooted/debloated stock firmware, and contacts sync just fine between the phone and gmail.

Same. I've never had an issue like this in all my years on android. All I can say is make 100% sure you are changing the Google contact in your phone book and not a phone/facebook/sim one. Any chances made via phone or Web to contacts should sync pretty much instantly.
Also if you have multiple accounts like I do, I'd recommend using just one for all your numbers and having the others just for email addresses and such. Maybe the multi account sync is just showing the one with the most information vs the actual one that you edited. See if this helps
finally i found the solution on the net. @ https://forums.motorola.com/posts/4b949ea56b

-Did you try deleting your Google account in accounts from your phone and then add it back? That might work. Since you checked online and your contacts are still on Google, it sounds like a sync-focused problem and not an account issue. Is your Google Calendar syncing? Also are other accounts syncing?
I once installed a rom (not Tasks) and the contacts did not show up until I reloaded gmail and sent myself an email. (I don't normally use Gmail, but did for that issue!)
Sorry, I don't have more recommendations!
Good Luck!

Does your calendar sync? Also gmail on the phone stays sync'd with the desktop /web versions? That's the issue!
