Is my note 2 defective? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Since I got my note 2, my screen turns on relatively slow at times almost 75% of the time. My s3 almost always beats my note 2 when turning them both on. Is this how it is for any of you guys?

Lol you're saying the screen wake is slow because of the delay? If so, it's just delayed compared to the S3 and has no effect on performance. No, your phone is not defective.

I know it doesn't affect performance, but it does get kind of annoying when it happens most of the time.

This is a common occurrence and has been discussed many times in many posts. You're phone is not defective. This is just a quirk of this particular phone.

I normally start/wake my phone with the power button as i do not use a lock screen. This is the fastest way to wake your phone. Pressing the home button with a lock screen does take a little longer for me. It also takes me to the home screen when i have no lock screen instead of the app that was open, which is more annoying!

I do the exact same thing, I see no reason whatever to run a lock screen as these phones never pocket dial anymore.
If took me a while to realize that the power button returned to the app that was open before it went to sleep and the home button went to the home screen however.

I see what your saying about the delay. Maybe it's something they can fix in the kernel

Never thought of removing the lockscreen. Makes perfect sense with this phone. Of course, that's one less screen to enjoy designing for!

Phone freezes/lockups

Has anyone had a problem with this? Since I got my 3vo two days ago I've had it freeze twice and i had to do a battery pull each time, I also just had my phone not be able to wake up, tried holding the power button down because I thought maybe it shut down randomly but nothing would happen. I ended up doing a battery pull, is anybody else having trouble?
Also, Apps like launcher pro and music beta seem to be lagging...

Mine did that last night. Had to do a battery pull. Any thing significant about the capcitive buttons coming on and off only when hitting the power button?

I had this exact issue and I had to do a 30 day exchange, sprint tech support said it was hardware issues.
Brandon
Mine did that, the capacitive buttons came on and off but the screen didn't, sometimes they wouldn't i made an exchange, i have a strong feeling it's hardware related, so I would recommend you exchange.
Mine has had this problem since day one but ever since I started traveling internationally and running it in airplane mode with the WiFi left on, I can't get it to crash!!! Now the only thing that's bothering me is the camera freezing after taking a shot. I don't know why the phone has decided to play nice, the only big change besides the airplane mode business is that I uninstalled Text Battery Widget.

Smart stay.

I've been using my sgs3 with smart stay enabled and noticed it doesn't seem to be sensing me looking at it.. I wear glasses.. and I'm wondering if this is a limitation ?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I also wear glasses and i find it works fine for me. Remember it doesnt work in low lights.
I Just tested it and it's not working without glasses on either. I see the 'eye' in the notification bar flash after 15 seconds, then it dims the screen, then again 5 seconds later and then screen switches off.
I've had smart stay enabled since day 0 and the phones had a few power cycles/reboots.

Doesn't work for me with my glasses on or off. Must be my face!
doesn't work for me either. not smart
maybe the galaxy just doesn't like your faces?
maybe that's what samsung meant with it being smart. hehe
seriously i have read somewhere it is the face it is tracking not just the eyes.
It even worked when my Dogs were looking at at a few times, and it's annoying because often I put phone off to the side not looking at it and still stays on and wasting battery.
I'm sorry, I didn't realise Samsung required users to look like dogs for this feature to work.
I'm thinking of flashing a custom Rom anyhow.. be interesting to see f it works on another Rom.

Well I do look a bit Ruff.
I just got my Galaxy. Seem to have the same issue, it's not working. Well I think there will be a software update soon enough.
If I consciously blink every so often I'm able to keep the screen on, but if I don't move or blink it turns off - at least that's how it seems to me.
Can't really get it working consistently yet.
I've had my phone since launch and it dimms but never turns off. I wear both glasses and contact lenses.
If the front camera is.nt pointed towards your face it may turn off however which is annoying sonetimes

Hi,
I got smart stay working!
I opened the camera, switched to front facing and positioned the camera so that my face was in the centre of the screen and taking up about 50% of the area.
Now when switching to home screen the little eye kept popping up and going away and the screen stayed on!
Paul
I noticed it works flawless. I have it set too 30 seconds.

Great
I find it very useful and works great, I don't wear glasses and I'v only had it two days but does as expected, I can look at it for 10 minutes and it won't turn off, if i point it away from me it turns off after my timeout.
I found if I closed my eyes and squinted one eye a tiny bit open it still didn't turn off though, but it's not like I'm playing hide and seek with it.

[Q] Need app to on and off the screen without using power button.

I am using Galaxy note 2 and want such a application which will on/off the screen without using power button and also it should not use the proximity sensor.
The screen on/off should work only with screen touch.
Can anyone please help me for this?
I know its not ideal, but theres a toggle to turn the screen off, amd then maybe the stylus removed to turn the screen on. Otherwise I feel like that anything touching the screen would cause it to turn on in pocket, similar to when I used to have the screen turn on in my pocket when I recieved a text, and my phone was constantly being "touched" with the bloop sound

There is a feature in some kernels, Plasma for instance, that is called TouchWake. It will not do exactly what you're wanting, and there will be nothing that will because it would keep the phone from deep sleeping and drain your battery extremely fast (not to mention your phone would always be coming on in your pocket because the screen registers touch through clothes if they're thin like pockets are).
TouchWake is where when your screen times out you can set a time limit to just touch the screen to wake it back up instead of having to hit a button.
Other than TouchWake being built into certain kernels, for the use like I explained above, there is nothing remotely similar to what you're wanting. It would just drain the battery way too much because the screen will never be able to be completely powered because its always awake waiting on a touch.

I use touchwake and have great battery life. There have been many arguments in different threads about whether using this mod causes intolerable battery drain, and all I can say is, for my phone, it has barely any effect on my battery.

I personally use Screen off and Lock donate. It allows you to have a home screen widget that you can make 100% transparent if wanted along with other levels of transparency. It also let's you change color of widget. Just has quite a few options.

I don't mean to say that under regular usage it would cause significant battery drain, I use it as well and have seen little to no change. I mean if the OP used it in the way he is wanting that it most definitely would cause significant battery drain because the screen would be constantly awake awaiting input instead of going to sleep after a set amount of time.
Even then touchwake wouldn't work for the OP unless he let the screen time out so it still isn't what he is looking for.

If you set the timeout to zero, then touchwake is constantly on, which is the way I've used it and there has still been no significant battery drain. I also haven't had any issue with it turning on in my pocket. I do, however, inadvertently turn it on often, which is why I wish Faux would activate his swipe2wake feature for his kernel app for the Note II. But he hasn't yet.

I'm using Plasma and the way it is set up is there is there is a time limit to how long the TouchWake feature will be active after the screen times out, if its different on Faux or any others I have no clue.
I find it hard to believe that the battery drain for it being always on isn't significant, I'm not saying you're wrong but that its hard to believe. Its constantly leaving a part of your phone awake, no deep sleep, to scan for touches.

Certain aosp roms have it in settings to remap your hardware buttons to perform different actions including screen off/on. I agree with you. It would be nice if these features could be baked into tw sometime in the future.

I know it's hard to believe, but I suppose the theory relates to idling a car under certain circumstances vs. turning it on and off over and over. There are instances where the former is actually more energy efficient than the latter (there are threads on XDA that discuss this theory, I can't remember where they are). Also, even though the phone isn't in deep sleep, it "idles" at a very low power usage rate. Again, for me, there is no significant drain at all. Last night, before I plugged it in to charge, the phone was at 53% after being "up" for 16 hours.
You can set any physical key to wake the device by editing gpio-keys.kl in /system/use/keylayout and putting WAKE at the end of the line.
This is how the home key wakes the device by default, you can also disable this by removing WAKE from that line.
Example:
key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
Would make the volume down button wake the phone.

Here is a suggestion
Try using GO LOCKER and the lock screen setting add on.
Works very well on my NOTE Running Jelly Beans B20.
Plus you can juice up your lock screen.

too many Samsung habits to break, but you can push the home button on Sammy phones to light the screen up.

well, we need mods for that and we don't have any for MAX currently.
HTC One has been having this feature of swipe to wake, volume to awake as as well as logo to awake. we will have to wait for devs to kick into action.
thanks!
I think there is an app in the app store that uses the proximity sensor to wake the phone, but not sure if it will work on this phone..
I found one in the app store
Auto Screen On
use the g-sensor, and when you pick up the phone, the screen is on!
use the "partial wakelock" option; this will use a light amount of battery, but to not have to push the power button, its worth it!

Power Button Issue? Or Software?

Hey guys, something that iv'e been noticing lately that has been an annoyance. I notice sometimes when I pull my phone out of my pocket and press the power button nothing happens unless I press it twice, it seems the power button doesn't respond until the second screen turns on. Is this some sort of software setting that has to do with the gyro sensor and being in my pocket?

This is my first LG phone, I honestly could be pressing a volume button by mistake, but I can't figure it out! I also do not use the fingerprint reader, not sure if that would really make a difference with this situation however.
I've had back buttons using the G2 and G3. It took me a while to not press a volume key instead of the power button. I always used knock on with those phones though, never the power button. Fingerprint reader has been awesome to me. If it's taking 2 taps you might have a defective unit.

No, you got it right. The phone is basically sleeping while the second screen is off. It doesn't turn on until the proximity sensor trips it to come back on. Put the phone in your pocket and wait a minute. Take it out really quick and try and turn it on. Or even use the knock on..... It won't work.... It's kind of annoying.... Lol.
